Lionsgate To Bring Back ‘Saw’ Franchise

Fans of the horror film genre may have felt a feeling of emptiness this Halloween when realizing there was no Saw film playing in their local theater. For the first time in seven years, Lionsgate did not release a new Saw movie but we knew this was going to be the case since before Saw 3D (Saw 7) even released.

Dropping the number from its title, introducing 3D into the franchise and adding a subtitle which emphasized the conclusion of the franchise, the plan was for Saw 3D: The Final Chapter to be the end. But where there’s money to be made, how can such a franchise truly be done with?

The Last Airbender Leads 2011 Razzie Award ‘Winners’

It’s that time of year again, when the Oscars reward various filmmakers, films, and actors for their extraordinary cinematic work, and the Razzies punish various filmmakers, films, and actors for their especially horrendous cinematic work.

Last night, the 31st Annual Razzie Awards were held at Hollywood’s Barnsdall Gallery Theater. To no one’s surprise, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender was the big “winner” (or maybe “loser” is more appropriate here) of the night, taking home the most Razzies. Alas, it wasn’t a clean sweep, as Sex and the City 2 took home several awards that Airbender was nominated for.

2011 Razzies Shortlist: The Worst Films and Performances of 2010

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31^st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24^th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

The categories this year are pretty much the same as last year – Worst Screenplay, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actor/Actress, Worst Actor/Actress, ...

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 14, 2010

This week:

Unstoppable is stoppable; Dune‘s future is looking bleak; Paramount readies some high-profile films; Warner Bros. want Tales From The Gangster Squad; Courtney Ford needs True Blood; will Merlin have magic? Women kick butt in The Athena Project; Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank and Ashton Kutcher get ready for New Year’s Eve; and lots more.

Last week’s champion Megamind and the Denzel Washington flick Unstoppable (review here), directed by Tony Scott, fought it out for the top spot over the weekend. It looks like the animated superhero film came out on top, after grossing an estimated $30.1 million, upping its total to $89.8 million.

That doesn’t mean that Washington’s film disappointed – as it grossed $23.5 million, which is business as usual for a Washington action effort.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 7, 2010

This weekend:

The box office is Mega; Relativity Media cracks the Bible Code; Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver and Robert De Niro turn on Red Lights; Tropic Thunder’s Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux and Steve Coogan go Documental; Eli Roth brings you Psycho Killer and Aaron Eckhart is The Expatriate.

Box Office

Megamind (read our review) flew to the top of the box office after grossing an impressive $47.6 million over the weekend. The 3D animated film features the vocal talents of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and Brad Pitt.

Due Date (read our review) with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis had to settle for second place, but it took in a decent $33.5 million. The film, which was directed by The Hangover’s Todd Phillips, again shows RDJ’s new and reclaimed star power.

Saw 3D (aka Saw 7) has been marketed as the “Final Chapter” in the Saw film series, but whether or not the filmmakers continue the flagship torture porn franchise, as a spin-off, prequel, or yet another sequel, remains to be seen.

In the meantime, two things are certain:

Saw 3D is the most violent and disturbing Saw film to date.

The 3D is completely unnecessary.

The final chapter of the record-breaking horror franchise, Saw, debuts this weekend to end the series with a bang. Along with adding 3D to the franchise’s seventh installment, the first time for the format in the series, Saw 3D will be wrapping up the story threads of the series to date and bringing back many of the key characters who helped shape the rather complex inter-connected plot.

The end is nigh and Jigsaw continues to insist that he’s not just winging the whole “master plan” thing in the latest TV spot for Saw 3D, the seventh Saw movie to hit theaters in as many years.

A French TV spot for Saw 3D hit the small screen this week and we are just over two weeks away from the release of the actual film, so this new English-language promo is likely to be either the last or the penultimate (love that word) preview for the graphic 3D horror pic.

Jigsaw is back for one last (promise?) game full of deadly traps and disturbing consequences for those that fail to pass his “tests” in this month’s torture porn flick, Saw 3D.

New posters have been unveiled, including that for a film that will be very gory, Saw 3D, a film that will be very pretty, The Tourist, and a film, the new Gulliver’s Travels, that, frankly, we don’t really understand why it exists in the first place.

Saw 3D will be the first of these pics to hit theaters and it promises to be the no-holds-barred finale of the long-running Saw franchise. The horror pic should deliver plenty of nasty blood and guts for its fans, while the trailer suggests that it will also use the 3D technology in an effective manner.

Every time Saw 3D is referred to as “the final cut,” “the final chapter,” or just “the last one,” my eyes perform quite the elaborate roll-around within the confines of my skull.

The first TV spot for the seventh Saw pic has appeared, along with a new billboard promoting the movie – and both are very clear on the fact that this new entry in the gruesome horror franchise is intended to be the concluding chapter.

Kevin Greutert has been a longtime editor for the Saw series and directed the previous film, Saw VI. That chapter was given arguably the best overall critical reception of any of the Saw sequels, though it suffered at the box office due to competition from Paranormal Activity.

Jigsaw, in some form or another, will be back and ready to play another twisted game in Saw 3D, which arrives in theaters this October. Based off the official trailer, the seventh entry in the Saw series promises to be a no-holds-barred horror experience for fans of the genre.

Saw 3D features the return of several characters from previous chapters in the Saw saga, including Costas Mandylor as Detective Mark Hoffman, Betsy Russell as former Mrs. Jigsaw herself, Jill Tuck, and of course Tobin Bell as the devious mastermind behind it all (despite his character having been dead for several movies now).

‘Saw 3D’ Trailer (Literally) Tortures Audiences

Lionsgate will release the seventh chapter in their successful “torture porn” series, Saw 3D, this October. A new trailer for the film has been released and it hints that this will indeed be the final Saw movie – despite rumors that plans for Saw 8 are already being developed.

Saw 3D (previously known as Saw 7) touts the tagline “The Traps Come Alive” and promises to be a fully immersive experience for moviegoers who see it in 3D. The official trailer for the film actually delivers on that promise and features lots of in-your-face shots of deadly weaponry that threatens to do irreparable harm to the audience members – both those watching the trailer and in the trailer itself.

Summertime and all that easy living is now done, and unless you’re one of those people who lives where the sun is always shining then the onset of Fall means four things: colder weather, earlier sunsets, heavier clothing and movies galore.

Yes, the summer has all those big blockbusters we’ve been waiting all year to see, but Fall is the time when we actually want to be in the movie theater: when being outdoors is no longer an attractive alternative and the cinema offers many, many, award-worthy films. A few of them even stand the chance of being pretty good.

The Saw horror movie series is truly desperate to hold on to the title of “Franchise That Is Harder To Kill Than A Terminator,” isn’t it?

It seems that the seventh entry in the franchise, Saw 3D, may not be the last movie that concerns the wacky adventures of Jigsaw and his master plan – which, at this point, is so ludicrously complicated that it makes the schematics of the psychological heist in Inception or the plot of Lost seem like child’s play in comparison.

Once upon a time the Saw franchise was the king of the horror box office, as the movie calendar made ample room for each gory installment – every single year. However, last year Saw VI made considerably less than the previous films ($64 million worldwide), when it opened on the same weekend as Paranormal Activity expanded its release. The dip was an early indicator that audiences were getting fed-up with Jigsaw’s twisted games.

However, in an attempt to spark new interest, Saw 3D (formerly Saw VII) is making the jump to the third dimension for the grisly proceedings.
