After watching the first few episodes of the 2nd season of Sanctuary, we all started to wonder if Ashley was dead, as in “dead dead”, or dead as in, “for dramatic ratings and she’ll be back dead.”

Yet the clues were obvious – even before our confirmation.

Though they drew out Ashley’s (Emilie Ullerup) death out for 2 episodes, she is dead. And she’s been replaced by one of the most dead-pan characterizations of a character I’ve ever seen, in the form of Kate Freelander (Agam Darshi).

In an interview with ÜberSciFiGeek, Emilie confirmed that she was let go due to a network decision and was not expecting her character’s death. As far as that network decision is concerned, Damian Kindler, the executive producer of Sanctuary, said that,

“… it was a decision we arrived at with our two major networks in the U.S. and Canada creatively, and we really felt it would have the deepest, most dramatic impact on the series and the characters… “

I’m guessing the studios have heard the backlash regarding Ashley dying. In a sort of back pedaling kind of statement, Kindler added in the article that, “people don’t necessarily have to die in sci-fi…” and if Sanctuary actually makes it to a 3rd season, there is a story they’re developing involving Ashley.

It might be a challange to get a 3rd season if viewers bail because Ashley and the mother / daughter / father relationship was their appeal to the show. I’m really not sure what the reasoning was behind it. Sure, she took some time to grow on me, but she eventually did. I won’t even go into how Freelander gets on my nerves in so many ways.

Like many, I’m not too motivated to watch the show any more. If I’m around, I’ll turn it on. If not, well, whatever. Please be kind and constructive in your comments gang! We already have a good idea how you may feel.

The much debated Stargate Universe is averaging 2.85 million viewers, and doing much better than the last season of Stargate Atlantis. SGU is currently bringing in 36% more total viewers than SGA, but then again, it’s early in the season, so I’m not holding my breath on any numbers holding up for the entire season.

Destination Truth’s 3rd season is averaging 2.2 million viewers.

Scare Tactics, though only averaging 1.56 million viewers in the Fall 2009 season, it’s up 42% from the 2008 season.

And finally, the surprise statistic for me is that Sanctuary is pulling in an average of 2.4 million viewers.

All of these numbers have added up to Syfy’s most-watched October prime in the history of the network.

“Syfy jumped to #3 in A25-54 and #4 among A18-49 versus all basic cable entertainment networks – its second best monthly ranking ever in these demos behind December 2002 when Steven Spielberg’s record-setting Taken premiered.”

For All The Nay-Sayers, There Are Just As Many Fans

No matter what we think and what opinions some of us may have of these shows, there are many more who do seem to appreciate and enjoy them. Syfy previously said that their old handle, The Sci Fi Channel, was deterring viewers from tuning in, thinking it was all Star Wars and Star Trek. Maybe they were right and they’re starting to pull more folk in from all over. At least the numbers may be supporting that perspective.

In other words, Syfy is powering on, like they said they would.

And as a bonus (because I love you) I let you know about the government’s “Cash for TV Clunkers” program.

The Office

So we recently let you Office fans know when you can expect Jim and Pam to walk down the aisle – four episodes into the news season. And now we have the first official wedding photo!

The scene was shot at a church in Van Nuys, California on this past weekend and from the photos below you can see that Pam (Jenna Fischer) will be a lovely bride and Jim (John Krasinski) will be every girl’s hometown-sweetheart Prince Charming.

On hand for Syfy’s Sanctuary panel were executive producers Martin Wood & Damian Kindler along with actors Robin Dunne (Dr. Will Zimmerman) & Amanda Tapping (Dr. Helen Magnus).

Some of the highlights pointed out in the panel were:

Two years ago, this was just an internet series, and now it’s a TV series heading for season 2. No internet project has ever made it into a second season on TV.

We’ll be seeing new characters in season 2 and we’re going to discover that there are sanctuaries all over the world.

Martin Wood said that if you liked the first season, you will enjoy season 2. The effects will be improved.

The show is branching out to using real props, like using Damian’s car. When you see the scene where Amanda Tapping is driving and Dunne is screaming – He’s not acting, what with Amanda driving. Damian kept wondering why the lateral traction control wasn’t kicking in!

They hit up Tokyo for a Syfy junket and did some filming there for scenes in the Tokyo Sanctuary.

Sanctuary was nominated for an Emmy for Visual Affects and they’re very proud of that.

Amanda Tapping has directed an episode last season and will do so again this season.

Between season 1 and 2 we discover that some events have taken place.

Keep in mind that season 1 was about establishing the characters and season 2 will expand on the relationships between the characters.

There’s a big future story coming where we see the the Sanctuary in a state of decay, where society falls & “mullets begin.” (I swear, I didn’t add that.)

We’ll be seeing a new, snarky character named Kate Freelander, played by Robin D’Arcy. Freelander is a freelance operative who works for the highest bidder. A lost soul of sorts. She’s introduced in the season opening 2-part story. Magnus doesn’t trust her up front and treats her like a drifter.

What’s up with Ashley? Cool thing happens with her are coming up, sending shockwaves through the Sanctuary network.

Damian notes that life isn’t going to get easier at all for Magnus.

Michael Shanks will be guest starring in season 2 as will Erica Cerra, Chris Gauthier and Callum Blue.

We will also be seeing more Peter Wakefield as Dr. Watson but in backstory format.

Someone asked if there have been any injuries or fun things from filming. Tapping reiterated somethig I’ve heard her say before: “I am a woman who should not do her own stunts. I’m a mess.”

At the end of the panel, Syfy took the opportunity to run their ad… again. They keep playing that cursed musical montage. I swear, it’s following me everywhere.

Season 2 of Sanctuary premieres on Friday, October 9th.

The green screen-based show, Sanctuary, will premiere on Friday, October 9th.

Scare Tactics is a show that I really like the premise of, but doesn’t really hit the mark as well as it can, in my opinion. But if you like the show, Scare Tactics will kick it back in gear on Tuesday, October 6th.

Destination Truth will be premiering for the curious of mind on Wednesday, September 9th.

Shows Already On The Air:

Everyone’s fave, Ghost Hunters will have new episodes in it’s Wednesday night slot through to the fall. They will be having special guest investigators such as Meatloaf. Cool… he can investigate love by the dashboard lights!

Warehouse 13 will keep hitting us with new episodes through September 22nd.

It’s Thursday. That means another round of news from the TV landscape. This week, I’ve got some conjecture and observations with the occasional possible SPOILER in place.

There are some new shows coming up this weekend, some Dollhouse noise, Law and Order cast updates, Dr. Who tidbits and observations or questions about Life On Mars, ER and other shows. And FYI, my ratings aren’t missing: I’ve moved the ratings section down towards the bottom of the post, right before my zany entries of the week!

Primeval

Primeval is starting up this Friday night on the Sci-Fi Channel. The ads look interesting enough. Anybody seen it? Anything you want to say about it? Without spoilers of course!

Sanctuary

For the Sanctuary fan, season 2 of Sanctuary has started filming, according to the Sci-Fi press release!

Fringe (SPOILERS Where Noted!)

Fringe returned this past Tuesday, and is sticking around for 6 straight episodes. Anyone been noticing “The Observer” making rounds on different shows? I’ve seen him on the NASCAR telecast in Jimmie Johnson’s pit, and on American Idol. I’m sure he’s in other shows, but those are where I’ve seen him so far. Have you spotted him anywhere?

Cast SPOILER Warning:

It’s been reported that Leanord Nimoy will be making a guest appearance on the finale of Fringe as the infamous William Bell, Walter’s science partner from back in the day!

Story Outline SPOILER

Upcoming eps of Fringe will be answering some questions, like what were the experiments on Olivia as a child; Peter’s “medical condition” and what the pattern means for Olivia and the Bishops on a personal level.

Sweet. A show that says it will answer questions, and then does. Can’t beat that!

Dollhouse

Ratings for Dollhouse are slipping, slowly but surely, and that bites for Joss Whedon fans because the show finally feels like it’s starting to get it’s legs under it. Well, to be more precise, it’s starting to feel like a product Whedon himself would put out, as opposed to the Fox network controlled issues we’ve seen so far.

Here are the official ratings for Dollhouse thusfar:

Ep 1 – Ghost: 4.76m,

Ep 2 – Target: 4.25m,

Ep 3 – Stage Fright: 4.18m,

Ep 4 – Gray Hour: 3.57m,

Ep 5 – True Believer: 4.26m,

Ep 6 – Man on the Street : 4.1m,

Ep 7 – Echoes : 3.87m,

Ep 8 – Needs: 3.49m

A sliding scale, yet I enjoy what the LA Times had to say about the treatment of the show by Fox and its subsequent ratings slide:

We blame Fox for the misstep, and for burying it on a Friday. It’s a real pity viewers haven’t had the patience to keep up.

Another oddity about Dollhouse is that TV By The Numbers was looking up some data for Dollhouse and they’ve noticed that Fox listed the May 8th episode of Dollhouse as the season finale. This is only the 12th episode aired. Admittedly, it’s more than the original 7 episodes that Fox initially agreed to way back when. Yet earlier, Fox had stated that they would be airing all 13 episodes filmed. I’m starting to want to type bad words at this point, so that’s all I’m going to say about this.

Law & Order Cast And Cash Problems

Rumors were abound when I wrote that there’s a possibility that Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni on Law & Order: SVU, may find themselves replaced.

The show has been renewed for an 11th season, but the two are banding together to ask for more money. Beside the $350k per episode wage they get, they’re also asking for back-end profits. Dudes, don’t go the Friends route!

While many don’t think NBC would dare retool their No. 1 scripted show (now that ER is done), Dick Wolf just says that he hopes they return next season.

This economy is not the best time to be pushing for more money when other networks are cutting costs, including actor salaries. Then again, Hargitay and Meloni definitely have NBC over a barrel. This should be interesting. They better hope some of the newer shows replacing ER don’t pull their weight, or their bargaining chips are going to be thin. Real thin.

Dr. Who

For the consummate Dr. Who fan, there will be a Dr. Who Season 3 marathon this Friday on The Sci-Fi Channel!

The fun starts at 8 AM with Smith and Jones, then followed by The Shakespeare Code, Gridlock, Daleks In Manhattan – pt1, Evolution Of The Daleks – pt 2, Human Nature – pt 1, The Family Of Blood – pt 2 and finishing up at 3 PM with Blink.

Lost (Slight Time-Shifted SPOILER)

So far on Lost, there’s a lot of “The island controls your life” chatter going on. Last night, Ben confronted the smoke monster. Smokey showed Ben his own demons and gave him a new set of running orders.

Though it hasn’t been explained, I’m starting to think I know what the smoke monster is, and for that matter, what the island is.

Does anyone else have any thoughts about the underlying premise of the island? Or is it just a vengeful version of Gilligan’s Island?

Jay Leno Is Not Wanted?

We have one of TV’s talk show icons ready to air their new show on your network, in your region. Wouldn’t you think that Jay Leno just might rank as a watchable show? For some, no question. For others, it’s “eh?.”

The Boston NBC affiliates think it’s “eh,” apparently. WHDH-TV is opting to air their 10 O’Clock newscast instead of the Jay Leno’s new talk show! They don’t feel Leno is going to be effective in prime time and say it will hurt their 11 O’Clock hour to air Leno.

NBC itself has said that this move is in violation of the affiliate’s agreement with NBC. If WHDH persists, they are going to have their NBC affiliation pulled. Ouch!! And they thought running the show was going to hurt!?

WHDH-TV has until September to change their mind. That’s when the new Leno show will air.

As far as his show goes, Leno says he hopes everything will work out in the end!

About his new show, Leno added:

We will probably lose the couch and the desk and just do more things. We’ll still have celebrities. There will still be a monologue, the stuff that works, headlines, and Jaywalking.

He can probably do his own headline about the NBC affiliate!

Life On Mars (Incredibly mild, alluded SPOILER)

For those of you who watched it, did the Life On Mars finale work for you? Some things made more sense finally, and I can’t say it was a let down, but I didn’t have a great revelation either.

At least the title now makes sense!

ER

The ER finale hit it out of the park, as far as finale ratings go!

ER brought in just over 16 million viewers which is the largest number of viewers for any drama series finale since the Murder She Wrote finale in 1996.

I didn’t find the episode too incredible, but it was on par with what they usually produce. I enjoyed the closing scene when they panned back so we could see the panorama of the entrance, now that was pretty cool.

Mekhi Phifer Fans

Mekhi Phifer (Dr. Pratt, ER) has booked a multi-episode story on Lie To Me. He’ll be playing FBI agent Ben Reynolds.

I really liked Phifer and was bummed to see him leave ER so early on in the closing season.

ABC Using Saturday Nights To Close Out Some Shows

ABC is using Saturday nights to close out the random collection of shows they’ve preempted this season for other ventures.

These shows are Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money.

Pushing Daisies will resume Saturday, May 30, at 10 pm/ET. After that, Eli Stone will air on Saturdays at 10 pm from June 20 through July 11. Starting July 18, Dirty Sexy Money will air until the August 8th finale and the reveal of Dutch George’s killer.

Ratings From The Week Of March 30th to April 5th

Up until now, I’ve been pulling numbers from various locations and squishing them together in one place. I found a spot, a single spot, with all the numbers we are interested in. I am going to start compiling those statistics here, but this week we are going to have a little bit of an overlap because of the way they track them. Starting next week, we’ll have new numbers for you. There’s still some new stuff in this list this week, and the list has grown a wee bit. Oh, you’ll be proud of me. I finally got Lost in there!

The strongest scripted show in the list is NCIS, coming in 4th overall. ER & CSI also made it into the top 10. NCAA Basketball only took one top 10 spot, and of course, American Idol ruled the roost, followed by Dancing With The Stars and those tight, minuscule dancing outfits.

Every week something comes along that makes my jaw drop and wonder just what were they thinking.

Octomom

G4 TV is reporting that the Octomom, Nadya Suleman, the mom who can’t seem to get enough of children, and who originally said that putting her kids on TV would be exploitation, is well in the works for a reality television show.

They’re going to follow her around with her 14-strong brood, chronicling her attempts at finding “love.” The count is 14 because she already had 6 when she went for her procedure to have another baby, which ended in 8.

The TV Network picking this up is “undisclosed” at the moment. Hmm. Are we betting people? Fox? Sci-Fi? MTV?

Fox Hits A New Tasteless High

Someone’s Gotta Go is a reality / contest show where people get laid off. Fox reps say they were inspired by the recession for this idea! Can you believe this crap?

It’s about real businesses struggling to make ends meet. The only twist is that co-workers will vote the laid-off person out. Can we say The Apprentice?

Regardless, give me a f@#$ing break! Do you (Fox) have no better sense of empathy for folks suffering through this economy than to mock them like this!? To make an entertainment venue out of misfortune? The title sucks, the inspiration sucks and well, you, the reader, can fill in the blanks, ’cause I’m done with this one.

The green-screen based sci-fi show Sanctuary has done well enough in the ratings department for Sci-Fi to pick up a 2nd season with 13 episodes.

Sci-Fi must be happy with it, as apparently are the fans of the show.

The first few episodes tested my patience… but that’s because they tried to fit so much developmental detail into those first few hours that it was blatantly obvious and painful. I personally wanted to find sanctuary from the show.

As the show progressed I felt that it found its footing and is showing a nice pace with the character developments through the episodes. I now find it isn’t a bad show to kill time with. (I did not say superb. I said wasn’t bad.)

Sanctuary was Sci-Fi’s highest rated debut episode since Eureka premiered back in July of ‘06. (ENI)

Since we’re chatting about the paranormal, I thought I’d toss something out there about Ghost Hunters.

If you can’t get enough of Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters International and what not, fret not my trusty readers.

Ghost Hunters has been such a stalwart performer for the network, spewing record ratings no matter which flavor of GH you watch. With that in mind, one more spin-off is coming our way soon: Ghost Hunters: College Edition.

I saw evidence of this popularity back at Comic-Con. Twilight had a gigantic line for it, but it was in the huge presentation room of the Con. When I headed off to catch the Ghost Hunters panel, I got there about an hour early and found the line had gone out the door, down the side of the conference center, stretched around the corner and extended to the front of the facility. It was surprising to say the least that getting there an hour early did not net me a seat. In fact, I never got near the door. I was still up at the front of the building when we were told the room was full. Boo! (That was not a pun! That was an attitude.)

Yep, another spin-off indeed. The show is going youthful and will feature a group of college students traversing the country, guided by an experienced ghost hunter.

No cast or crew have been announced yet, but I am sure the students will be keeping up on their studies while having their wits frightened out of them. (THR)

Have you ever been in a haunted house? It is a true test of your blood pressure for sure. My grandparents house in Maine was over 200 years old and it had what I called “Incredibly Unique” sounds and events that used to occur in the place. I could not stay there alone when I was a kid. Nope. And the dog (That I kept with me in the house when I was alone) didn’t help when all he did was bark at a dark corner of the hallway. (”Expletive”-ing dog.)

Well, with Ghost Hunters being such a solid ratings performer, I have an idea that will set ratings afire and put the Sci-Fi Channel on the map of all networks, basic or otherwise. PAY ATTENTION SCI-FI: Ghost Hunters: Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Yeah. I’d love to see my fav, Marissa Miller chasing ghosts. She’s a tomboy of sorts and would kick some serious a**. That’s all I’m gonna say about this…

Bruce’s First impression: If you’re more action-centric, Sanctuary will drive you crazy waiting for it. If you are story driven and enjoy detailed development, you’ll be fine. In the premiere, detailed story development seemed favored over action but if you’re looking for full time continuity in the story line, you might also be disappointed.

Sanctuary’s big claim to fame is that it is filmed mostly in front of a green screen. Sometimes you don’t notice it and sometimes it’s rather apparent. In the first 30 minutes we meet most of the different characters of the show, in one form or another.

We first meet Alexi (Cainan Wiebe) when police respond to a noise complaint. The police find him under a bed next to a dead body. The cops also end up dead because of an appendage that pops out and feeds on brains when Alexi is afraid. It’s a side effect of radiation exposure from when he was in the Chernobyl region.

We meet Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), a forensic psychologist who works for the police, and we are either seeing some inane talent or just the unique way his perceptions work when he surveys a crime scene. They haven’t made that clear, but I suspect the latter.

Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), who’s 157 years old, has been keeping track of Will since he was 8. They first intersect as adults when she hits him with her car while chasing Alexi. “Well this isn’t how I hoped we’d first meet,” she says, with an odd English accent.

We then meet Ashley (Emilie Ullerup), the hot blond. She’s in pursuit of Alexi for Dr. Magnus. It turns out that Ashley is the daughter of Helen Magnus. Ashley Magnus has a tendency towards guns and has a ‘tude that they portray well. I was rather annoyed with her glib traits while not accomplishing any of her jobs, despite being the action girl in all leather. See, there are some redeeming show features.

We then meet John Druitt (Christopher Heyerdahl) who looks a little like the old black and white version of Dracula. When we first meet him, he’s killing a prostitute after obtaining information about The Sanctuary. He turns out to be Ashley’s father, and back in the day, he was Jack the Ripper. It’s complicated. Something about Dr. Magnus’ blood turned him into something and it has driven him to the point of wanting to kill.

After Dr. Magnus and Dr Zimmerman meet, she takes him to the Sanctuary. It’s there that we meet Bigfoot. Yes, Bigfoot… but he’s only about 6 feet tall, at best. Not very… big. Dr. Magnus pulled some bullets out of him and he stayed on as a staff member of The Sanctuary. It actually looks like the Geico caveman finally got a job!

The Sanctuary is a place where Dr. Magnus either keeps, or lets unique beings, creatures and monsters stay. Some, to be protected from mankind, others, to protect mankind from.

We don’t meet Henry Foss (Ryan Robbins) until an hour in. He’s an employee of Dr. Magnus as the technical expert that keeps things running at The Sanctuary.

~

After we meet Alexi, for some reason, the cops pin the murders that Alexi commits on the downstairs neighbor, no explanation, except this twist seems to be used as a tool to demonstrate Dr. Zimmerman’s ethical character. And I found the complete absence of names with some of the police force interesting. I’m thinking if you have no name, you might as well be wearing a red security shirt (classic Star Trek reference)!

After Magnus and Zimmerman meet, she takes him to The Sanctuary. The guided tour involves showing him some of the more unique residents and it borders on hokey as she explains each one and even apologizes for the behavior of one of them.

Yes, you read right earlier on. John Druitt learns where the super secret Sanctuary is through a street walker. Go figure that one!

Druitt confronts Ashley who went out after being told not to go out. During the confrontation, Ashley empties her gun trying to shoot the guy, even at point blank range. Though he’s lightning fast, when she’s out of ammo, she goes to plan B, which is trying to take him on, hand-to-hand. Yeesh.

Though they talk up how Dr. Magnus has collected the denizens of the Sanctuary, both Helen and Ashley seem extremely challenged in their encounters with Alexi, and then Druitt. Thus, I’m just not sure how they got this far along in their little project with regards to capturing some of these creatures.

Their little project is dedicted to tracking down, studying and protecting strange and terrifying creatures that secretly populate our world and live among us. She’s discovered some process or additive for her blood that has helped her live this long.

Finally: The show has potential but now that the two hour premiere is over with, they aren’t going to be able to pull off this detailed, slow plot development pace each week without boring us to the point of wanting to go out and mow the lawn. They need to pick up the pace and there is potential with the material they have available to them and what they’ve touched on in the premiere. Even if Magnus’ capture methodologies were vaguely, well, actually, completely overlooked.

Right now, I’d be surprised if this webisode-to-TV series lasts past the first season, if that. They’ve slapped it in the Friday night time slot and moved Stargate: Atlantis back an hour to try and capitalize on the audience that will show up during that time frame.

Writing credits show Martin Wood and Damian Kindler, both with extensive experience scribing Stargate, so I was expecting something more. Not sure what, but more than this.

Come on, surprise me Sci-Fi. No, really. Try it sometime.

In one devastating day, billions of human lives were consumed by nuclear fires and a very lucky few, less then 50,000, were fortunate to escape aboard a band of refugee starships and flee from the Cylone attack into deep space, led by the sole surviving Colonial warship, the battlestar Galactica. In the final season, they have found Earth, and it ain’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Bruce says: OK, if you don’t know what I think about the show by now, what cave have you been in? For the new folk: I am really looking forward to the final part of season 4, regardless of how crappy the Sci-Fi Channel is handling it.

Starts in February of 2009, as leaked by Jamie Bamber back in late 2007!

Bones on Fox (Season 4)

A scientist who reads clues left behind in bones’ to solve cases teams up with an FBI Special Agent who mistrusts science and believes evidence should come from the living. (X-Files??)
It stars Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz and Michaela Conlin.

Bruce says: Actually I hear that if you’re a Boreanaz fan, you’d be happy. I’ve enjoyed all the commercials I’ve seen for it! I just haven’t had the time to watch it.

Premieres Wednesday, September 3rd.

Chuck on NBC (Season 2)

From executive producer Josh Schwartz and executive producer-director McG.
When Chuck opens an e-mail subliminally encoded with government secrets, he unwittingly downloads an entire server of sensitive data into his brain. Now, the fate of the world lies in the unlikely hands of a guy who works at a Buy More Electronics store. Instead of fighting computer viruses, he confronts assassins and international terrorists.

Bruce says: Catchy, quirky and an ongoing sense of developing characters. If you’re not careful, you could get hooked.

Premieres Monday, September 29th.

Cold Case on CBS (Season 6)

A drama about Lilly Rush (Played by Kathryn Morris), a dedicated female detective in the Philadelphia homicide squad, who finds her niche when she’s assigned to “cold cases”–crimes that have never been solved.

Bruce says: I really enjoy how they look at older cases, and how it’s portrayed in the screen. Flash backs to familiar era’s, then snapping back to the older characters in present day is done well. This one is a Bruce Fave.

Premieres Sunday, September 28th.

Cops on FOX (Season 21)

Bad Boys, Bad Boys, Whatcha gonna dooo? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you? (I hope you read that with the tune going off in your head!) And they’ve been coming for them for 21 seasons. Sheesh!

Bruce says: It’s a classic. When nothing else is on, I like tuning in to hear the excuses the half neked criminal ilk come up with. It’s almost a game!

Premieres Saturday, September 6th.

Criminal Minds on CBS (Season 4)

The BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit) is an elite team of FBI profilers who analyze the country’s most twisted criminal minds, anticipating their next moves before they strike again.

Bruce says: That’s TWISTED CRIMINAL MINDS. Not my mind. I really liked this show when Mandy Patinkin was on it. They’ve done OK with his replacement, Joe Mantegna and they took a different and interesting approach to showing the story in season three. This is still a Bruce Fave, even without Patinkin.

Premieres Wednesday, September 24th.

Some notes and observations from the 2008 Comic-Con Stargate Atlantis panel in San Diego.

The panel for Stargate: Atlantis was lighthearted and fun to watch. The actors in the panel were Joe Flanigan, Jewel Staite, Robert Picardo and show scribe Brad Wright and Chris Sanagustin, the VP of Original Programming from the Sci-Fi Channel.

The crowd was pretty animated with the introductions and when Jewel Staite was introduced the energy of the crowd easily tripled. The Firefly demographic was well represented.

From the question and answer session I picked up the following snippets:

Atlantis will be hitting it’s 100th episode this, their fifth season.

Joe Flanigan is the only castmember on the panel that has been on the show for the full five seasons.

Robert Picardo’s humorous observation on the change of Atlantis commanders, to go from the nice-to-look-at Col. Carter (Amanda Tapping) to the bald, middle-aged male demographic alternative.

Jewel quietly grumbled about always being kidnapped in the woods. The message being sent is that she’d rather be kidnapped where there are more public amenities I guess.

Robert Picardo noted that he likes the fact his character is called Richard Woolsey and not Dick. He made the observation that his character is a little bit of a dick and he said his career plans involved being like another dick and be the spokesman for priceline.com. (This is not the first time I’ve heard William Shatner get slammed in a panel. Is it open season on Shatner this year?)

Brad Wright touched on Stargate Universe being real close to happening, and there’s a new Stargate movie in development…

The Sheppard / Teyla relationship will see some screen time but it’s more of a special relationship with a lot of gray area.

Jewel was asked what’s it like playing a medical nerd vs. mechanical nerd. She said there was more shiny stuff in Firefly and it was easier to be a mechanic than learning medical jargon. The audience erupted into a frenzy of applause with the Firefly reference. I almost went deaf it got so loud.

Jewel will have a little bit more control over where her character develops.

When Jewel was asked how this show compares to other sci fi shows… she replied, “This one doesn’t get canceled!”

We were given some insight into Jason Momoa (Ronon) and his decorating tastes. Jewel tossed out for some reason that I can’t remember how Jason’s dressing room / trailer “looks like a pirate ship meets Clan of the Cave Bear” and keeps trying to “help out” with her interior decorating in her trailer.

There are no plans on the horizon for Ben Browder to make any guest appearances on Stargate Atlantis. (As Ben observed in another panel, he’s one of the few SG cast members to not pass through Atlantis.)

We’ve been told that cut scenes will be added to the season 4 boxed set.

At the end, they showed a preview clip of Amanda Tapping’s Sanctuary and it didn’t really get my attention even though I’ve been looking forward to it. It didn’t come across with a lot of energy and did not get me excited about it. We initially touched on Sancutary in January here on Screen Rant.

We’ll see how this web-to-TV show does after it falls into the time slot Stargate Atlantis will vacate when their latest season ends.

“There are monsters loose in the world. And they are the key to the future of our race.”

That’s the tag line for Sanctuary over on IMDb.

Sanctuary is about one Dr. Helen Magnus who is on a quest with her protege, Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), to track down, aid and protect strange creatures that walk the earth (I’m resisting a smart aleck remark here).

Sci Fi is picking up this seasoned show and it will be the first TV series to use live actors against virtual sets, in much the same way 300 and Sin CIty were done.

If you’re wondering where this show comes from, it has eight webisodes under its belt and has been playing on a computer near you!

Sanctuary launched on the internet last year using a subscription model and the TV version of the series, produced by Stage 3 Media in association with the Sci Fi Channel, is slated to begin production in March. Since the production is based in Canada, it isn’t affected by the writers’ strike. The same applies to Sci Fi’s Stargate Atlantis series which will begin filming its fifth season in a couple of weeks. Amanda Tapping, who co-starred on that series last season, will return for several episodes.

Sci Fi ordered 13 episodes of this drama that’s been coined Gothic X-Files meets Buffy over on IMDb. It will star Amanda Tapping of Stargate fame as Dr. Helen Magnus (she’s always the hot, smart chick!) but we finally get to see her in another role besides Samantha Carter.

The show’s other notables are writer-producer Damian Kindler whose writing credits include Beast Master on TV and more recently, the Stargate series. Also involved is producer-director Martin Wood, who has directed numerous Stargate SG-1 & Andromeda episodes. They’re executive producing the series with Sam Egan.

13 episodes is a tall order for something that up until now has only existed online, but with everyone’s ties with the Sci Fi channel through the Stargate SG-1 franchise, the network’s upper management had already discussed this with them even before it launched as a web-based series.

Sci Fi appreciated the level of quality and cost effectiveness of the CGI on the show and they are planning on retooling it a bit for it’s premiere on television. The actors and staff will will remain, so we should be in for a pretty good show if you ask me – but then I’ve been somewhat biased towards the Stargate franchise.

I have some concerns, being that it’s already been compared to other shows that have come before it in the monster genre… and will we always be seeing Samantha Carter and feeling like we’re watching another Stargate spinoff? I hope not. It will be nice to see how they head down this new path.
