‘Salt 2′ Moving Forward; Angelina Jolie Not Yet Confirmed

Last summer’s Salt once again proved that Angelina Jolie still makes for as captivating an action movie star as her male counterparts – even though the film itself was generally regarded to be a decent but standard spy thriller. It still managed to gross $300 million worldwide, ensuring that Sony Pictures would at least give serious thought to making Salt 2.

Progress on the sequel has been pretty slow up to now, in part due to Salt director Philip Noyce passing on the project to direct a film like the Bloodsport remake; there’s also the matter of Jolie still not being officially confirmed to return for Salt 2.

Deadline, however, says that Sony is beginning to really move forward with Salt 2 now, having rehired original Salt screenwriter Kurt ...

Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

2011 People’s Choice Awards Winners

For 37 years, the People’s Choice Awards has been celebrating the fan favorites in film, television and music. In preparation for tonight’s awards ceremony, over 35 million votes were cast by the American public in hopes that their favorite film, television series, actor or musician will take home this coveted award.

For the second year in a row, the multifaceted Queen Latifah will be serving as host of this fanatical gala. With over 43 separate categories having to fit within the given timeslot, something tells me that Queen Latifah is going to be forced to move things along at a swift pace in order to fit each category within the 2-hour time-limit.

2011 Razzies Shortlist: The Worst Films and Performances of 2010

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31^st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24^th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

The box office meets the Little Fockers; we learn about the Madden Curse; Screen Gems asks About Last Night; Phillip Noyce cuts down on Salt; Christian Bale is a Nanjing Hero and Christina Hendricks, Olivia Munn and Seth Meyers don’t know how Sarah Jessica Parker Does It.

Box Office

The Focker family were the box office champions over the weekend. Little Fockers,the third film in the “Meet The…” franchise banked an estimated $34 million over the weekend (read our review). The Ben Stiller starrer has now scored $48 million since its launch last week. The grosses aren’t amazing for this pricey comedy, but it should be profitable in the end for Universal.

‘Avatar’ Tops List of Most Pirated Movies in 2010

There are plenty of threats to the entertainment industry every year, but movie piracy consistently comes up as the biggest. Authorities continue to seek avenues to shut down the illegal downloading of movies, but apparently it is not enough. In 2010, nearly 100 million downloads were recorded – and those were just the top ten most pirated movies of the year.

The misconception with pirated movies is that those who watch on their computer are not actually going to the theater. For the most part, we can assume this is true. But when a film like Avatar comes in at the top spot with 16.5 million illegal downloads, one must wonder how many of those people also contributed to the movie’s record-breaking $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura Talks ‘Moscow’; ‘Salt’ & ‘Red’ Sequels

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has been making quite the name for himself over the past couple of years. In addition to his involvement with the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises, Bonaventura worked behind-the-scenes on this summer’s Angelina Jolie action vehicle, Salt, and next week’s comic book release, Red – not to mention he has the upcoming Jack Ryan franchise reboot, Moscow, on his plate as well.

Bonaventura spoke recently with Cinema Blend about Moscow, a prequel to Jack Ryan’s previous cinematic ventures that explores the character’s origins and will feature Chris Pine in the lead role. Lost director Jack Bender is attached to direct the flick, the script for which is currently being tweaked by Sherlock Holmes screenwriter Anthony Peckham.

As the story goes, Tom Cruise dropped out of doing Salt opting to do the film Knight and Day instead, leaving a vacancy that was ultimately filled by Angelina Jolie. We should all remember to thank Mr. Cruise for doing us that favor.

Although, it’s easy to see why Cruise might’ve been trepidacious about doing a film like Salt: the immediate comparison that springs to mind is the now-revered Jason Bourne franchise, which may have been too close for comfort (for a leading man, that is).

However, with Angelina Jolie taking over the lead role Salt instantly becomes a different animal: one that I would rank above the first Bourne film, but somewhere below that franchise’s superior sequels.

Box Office

Christopher Nolan’s Inception remained the box office champion over the weekend. The Dark Knight director’s latest film should steal another $44 million worth of moviegoers’ cash by the time Monday morning rolls around.

Comic-Con 2010: Sony’s Salt & Battle: Los Angeles

Sony Pictures’ Comic-Con 2010 presentation this year covers two film, one of which, Salt, which opens tonight at midnight and another that we’ve seen practically nothing for in next year’s Battle: Los Angeles.

Angelina Jolie Confirmed for Comic-Con

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed yesterday that Angelina Jolie will definitely be in attendance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con 2010 to promote her new action/spy film Salt. Jolie will appear at the convention during Sony’s 1:00pm Hall H presentation on Thursday, July 22. Along with Salt, Sony is promoting the Aaron Echkart sci-fi film Battle: Los Angeles.

Interestingly, Salt will be released nationwide on the Friday of the convention (July 23rd). Typically, Comic-Con is the place for studios to show off footage from films that are still in production, or won’t be released for some time, and create early buzz around projects.

Considering that the movie opens the day after the panel, and they have already released multiple trailers and clips from the film, I wonder how much new ...

Sure, The Last Airbender turned out to be a major disappointment, but Predators was pretty decent. This week brings us Chris Nolan’s highly-anticipated new film, Inception, along with the Nicolas Cage action/adventure film, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. We’ve decided to add a new recurring feature for you loyal readers. Prior to each month, we will present a teaser for the upcoming slate of films to be released that month, which we’ve discussed here at Screen Rant.

This summer has been fairly weak so far apart from Toy Story 3, but July seems to have more to offer. While much of it is still typical summer popcorn movie fare, a shining light of originality may be found in Inception. But that doesn’t mean it’s the only movie worth seeing.
