Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

2011 People’s Choice Awards Winners

For 37 years, the People’s Choice Awards has been celebrating the fan favorites in film, television and music. In preparation for tonight’s awards ceremony, over 35 million votes were cast by the American public in hopes that their favorite film, television series, actor or musician will take home this coveted award.

For the second year in a row, the multifaceted Queen Latifah will be serving as host of this fanatical gala. With over 43 separate categories having to fit within the given timeslot, something tells me that Queen Latifah is going to be forced to move things along at a swift pace in order to fit each category within the 2-hour time-limit.

Since The Matrix Trilogy, the Wachowski Siblings have only directed a single film – Speed Racer – which was pretty much panned by everybody you’ve ever met. Personally, I liked it well enough. Sure, the film was drenched in green-screen and was nothing to write home about, but it was also vibrant, ridiculous, and high-octane insane, just like a loosely live-action anime should be.

For the past couple years the Wachowskis have been trying and failing to get their sci-fi/Iraq war film, Cobalt Neural 9, fully financed and off the ground. Roadblocks such as the controversial elements of the story – for example, the assassination of George W. Bush – have seemingly stood in the way. This week’s home video releases lack the mass appeal of other more intriguing weeks, but there are still a few titles worth your money. The three most intriguing DVD and Blu-ray releases take a stab at three distinct time periods in history.

Sling an arrow with Robin Hood, thrust a blade with Spartacus: Blood and Sand or smell the roses with American Beauty in this week’s DVD and Blu-ray breakdown.

If you are thinking twice about spending money on this week’s releases, give them a cheap rental and prepare for next week’s highly-anticipated batch of home video releases.

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

There is a long list of awesome weapons in film history, and it’s about time we narrow it down to the top 25 (in our all-knowing, unerring opinion).

The inception of this list came while watching Iron Man and the scene where Tony Stark presented the amazingly destructive Jericho Missile. Then again, maybe it truly began when I bought a replica Hattori Hanzo sword at C2E2 a month ago. Either way, we’ve all been fascinated by the technology filmmakers come up with, and weapons tend to be at the top of amazing innovations that catch the filmgoer’s eye.

The box office sees green as Shrek attacks the top spot; Alfred Molina joins Taylor Lautner in Abduction; Juno Temple has signed onto The Three Musketeers; Cinderella wears Prada; Gerard Butler is the latest star to be Born; MTV goes howling mad for Teen Wolf; plus lots more!Shrek: Forever After led the box office charge over the weekend. The 3D ogre tale managed to scrape in roughly $72 million worth of green. While the film’s opening isn’t a disaster, it is a lacklustre debut for the pricey animated film and it’ll need good legs and strong international grosses to turn a profit. It looks like this really might be forever after for Shrek!

Iron Man 2 retained the top spot this weekend after grabbing just under $50 million worth of moviegoers’ cash over the weekend. The Tony Stark adventure has now grossed a spectacular $208 million domestic gross since its debut last weekend. Will it outgross the original?

Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood was in second place with just under $37 million for the weekend. While the debut isn’t overly impressive, it is solid for an action film aimed at a mature audience. Universal will be hoping that the film has legs, so that it can cover its expensive outlay ...

Ridley Scott’s incarnation of Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe is a prequel to the story we’re all familiar with – so it may not be the legendary story you’re expecting.

The film opens in 12th century France, where Crowe plays Robin Longstride, an archer in the army of King Richard. The King is on the last leg of the Crusades, “bankrupt and plundering his way back to England” (that’s right, not quite the version of King Richard we’re familiar with). We are introduced to Robin here, establishing that he is a moral man of honor and not afraid to fight.

New Robin Hood Interactive Trailer

You may have gotten a good feel for Ridley Scott’s upcoming take on Robin Hood with all the trailers, clips, images and behind-the-scenes featurettes. But if you’re looking for a different way to get you excited for the film’s release, we have just the thing: a new interactive trailer.

The new Robin Hood trailer functions different than a normal trailer in that it allows you to interact by clicking on things that pop up throughout it.

For example, at the point where we see Russell Crowe as Robin standing next to a tree with a bow and arrow, you can click on a little box that appears, which will give you some info on the mythological figure’s hideout (some of the boxes also reveal some new behind-the-scenes footage).

New Robin Hood Images and Ridley Scott Interview

When legendary director Ridley Scott set out to bring Robin Hood to the big screen, he had one very specific goal: keep it real. In a recent interview with MTV, Scott explained how his interpretation of the famous character is different than the 22 Robin Hood films that have come before it, and why he believes that Robin Hood was a real person.

In the interview, which you can watch below, Scott says,

“I wanted to go real, because I feel he really existed. The ones to date have always treated Robin Hood like a myth, part of a fairy story. I always figured that there was so much written about Robin that he definitely existed.”

New ‘Robin Hood’ Clips

There are three new clips from Robin Hood – the latest action-packed cinematic collaboration between Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe — now online, which feature explosions, Robin (Crowe) and his fellow bandits in action, and even a hint of foreplay between the rouge hero and the fair Lady Marian (Cate Blanchett).

First, MSN has the full version of a scene you’ll probably recognize from the official Robin Hood trailer. It features Robin and his merry men in action — kindly assisted by Friar Tuck (Mark Addy) wielding a crossbow in each hand — as they seemingly enjoy the task of holding up a group of treacherous soldiers passing through the misty woods of Sherwood.

Robin Hood 2, Men (Not) In Tights & Ridley Scott’s ‘Pompeii’

Ridley Scott’s interpretation of the Robin Hood mythos certainly went through its share of changes during the journey from a Nottingham script treatment to the finished film we’ve seen in trailers. While some of us may still be mourning the loss of a sympathetic Sheriff of Nottingham, the choice to follow a more traditional Robin Hood story will definitely make Scott’s film more accessible to audiences.

Though moviegoers have yet to see Robin Hood, Scott is confident that the changes have positioned the film to do well at the box-office – as well as make room for a sequel.

Robin Hood On Target to Open Cannes Festival

Ridley Scott’s epic Russell Crowe starrer Robin Hood is set to open the 63rd Cannes Film Festival on May 12. The umpteenth big screen retelling of the Robin Hood legend will be screened out of competition at the prestigious film festival.

In the last few years The DaVinci Code and Up have opened the festival and gone on to make a killing at the box office. Hood is also scheduled to open across France on the same day, with US and UK releases on May 14th.
