While comic book movie titans like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises are hogging the spotlight, there are several other high-profile Summer 2012 prequels, sequels, and adaptations vying for the moviegoing public’s attention on a daily basis. Meanwhile, a smaller production like Riddick (a.k.a. Riddick 3) continues to make headlines – thanks to the efforts of its star, Vin Diesel – even though it’s not due out until next year.

Today, we have a combination of new official stills and higher-definition versions of images previously available online, from 2012 titles like Prometheus, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and G.I. ‘Riddick 3′ Titled ‘Riddick’; New Set Photos & Synopsis Revealed

Following a temporary production shutdown in 2011, the third installment in the Chronicles of Riddick series – which Universal is now officially referring to as simply Riddick – has begun filming once again. Vin Diesel is back in black (goggles) as the titular ex-convict with augmented vision, and has been treating fans with set photos that feature the actor in costume, on the sci-fi action/thriller threequel’s set.

Today, we have two additional images of Diesel, striking poses on the Riddick set – along with the film’s official plot synopsis and complete cast list (via Universal Pictures’ press release).

First ‘Riddick 3′ Image & Casting Update

A third flick featuring Vin Diesel in his original breakout role, as the “shining-eyed” Richard B. Riddick has always been a questionable prospect, ever since the costly second installment (2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick) failed to become a sizable hit at the box office. In fact, Riddick 3 came close to collapsing in 2011, when a shortage of funding forced production on the project to be temporarily shut down.

Since then, the threequel has managed to secure the necessary funding to continue moving forward – and today, we have both the first set pic of Diesel and another official casting update, to prove it.

Katee Sackhoff & Jordi Molla Join ‘Riddick 3′ as Mercenaries

After years of developing the project, writer/direct David Twohy and star Vin Diesel finally managed to get the untitled Riddick 3 project off the ground and into production. That is, until (lack of) financing shut down principal photography for two months. Things are back on track now since Once Race Films paid their bills and not only is the crew back shooting, but the film’s cast just grew by two.

Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff has signed to co-star in the sequel to Chronicles of Riddick as the female lead. Deadline is reporting that Sackhoff will be playing a character named Dahl, a Nordic mercenary on the hunt for Riddick. ‘Riddick 3′ Secures New Funding, Production to Resume

It’s been a long road for Vin Diesel’s Riddick 3. The third entry in the saga of the popular sci-fi character (who first appeared in the 2000 film Pitch Black, then again in his own 2004 solo venture, The Chronicles of Riddick) has had many starts and stops, the latest start being the actual start of production this past summer – the latest stop being a production halt this fall, when the production company, One Race Films, failed to pay its debt to the studio where Riddick 3 is being shot.

However, in a new update we’re hearing that Riddick 3 has secured new funding, and production will soon be back on track.

If Vin Diesel is anything, he’s a man of the people (just ask any of the more than 27 million people who “like” the actor’s Facebook page.) – and as a man of the people, Diesel gives his fans what they want, namely updates on the third installment to the popular Chronicles of Riddick franchise.

A live action follow-up to Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick is something fans have been waiting years for. Pitch Black helped launch star Vin Diesel’s career and it spawned a big budget sequel which didn’t meet critical or financial success the studio hoped for. Since then however, writer/director David Twohy and Vin Diesel have taken it upon themselves to find a way to make Riddick 3 happen, one that would return the franchise to its simpler, harsher roots and wrap-up the story of Riddick.

Vin Diesel has been talking up a third Chronicles of Riddick film for nearly two years now. He let his fans know via Facebook at the end of ’09 that the project had already begun location scouting and a few months later he was confirmed to be returning to star in and produce Riddick 3. David Twohy, the man behind both Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick penned the script, which is said to be true to the character, very dark and certainly worthy of a hard R-Rating.

Diesel & Twohy Talk Riddick 3 With Potential Buyers

Richard B. Riddick, everyone’s favorite night-vision equipped Furyan tough guy, will soon be heading back to the big screen in the aptly titled Riddick.

Collider snagged a video of director David Twohy and star Vin Diesel pitching the film to potential buyers. The video, which included footage from the previous Riddick films and games as well as some new concept art, has since been taken down, but we can still give you the gist of Twohy’s presentation and reveal some possible new plot information for the film.

In Twohy’s remarks, he made sure to note that Riddick would definitely be R-rated, describing the film as “visceral.” The concept art shown during the presentation matched this description, featuring a variety of snarling aliens and some very cool weaponry.

Even after Chronicles of Riddick became a big box office disappointment for Universal Pictures and actor/producer Vin Diesel, there’s been talk of Riddick 3 for years. Diesel is passionate about the character which is exemplified in his work on the video games and voicing the character in an animated feature titled The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury.

Diesel, along with Riddick’s most loyal fans, knew there was opportunity to make another great film along the lines of his introduction in Pitch Black. So, working with director/writer David Twohy, the plan is bring Riddick back to his roots in a lower budget and grittier, harsher take on the character with no concessions being made for the big studio mainstream mentality.

As it should be.

Action star Vin Diesel has been going against the tide with the way he updates people on his movie projects, by opting use to Facebook instead of the now-popular Twitter. His latest update on the third Riddick film – which has a tentative title of simply Riddick – is some early concept art.

The confirmation of Riddick 3 came in February and right now the project is in pre-production with a tentative shooting start date of sometime later this year. Supposedly the third film will be more Pitch Black than Chronicles of Riddick (thank god!) and we even learned recently what the plot will roughly be).

Hours ago, Vin Diesel updated his 7.6 million Facebook fans on the status of the fifth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, and teased the upcoming Riddick 3.

After the incredible success of Fast & Furious, which saw the franchise’s original main cast all return, there was now no limit to how many franchise films they could make and how many the characters would return for. So without surprise, Paul Walker revealed a year ago that they’d definitely be returning for a 5th and that they’d be going to Brazil in the movie.

Chronicles of Riddick 3 Plot Details

To no surprise, Chronicles of Riddick 3 was just confirmed a few days ago with its star Vin Diesel set to return in one of his career-defining franchises. At this point, the film’s tentative title is simply Riddick and it’s set to be distributed domestically by Universal and internationally by Lionsgate if things go according to plan.

And going according to plan is exactly what’s happening at this early stage. According to THR, the Riddick property is hot in demand and Lionsgate was able to get a bidding war happening in Russia for the rights to its distribution where the asking price has jumped up past $2.5 million for that country alone. This was after a late-night presentation to buyers that Diesel himself attended.

Vin Diesel Confirmed for Riddick Sequel

Variety has confirmed that Vin Diesel will be back to both produce and star in another installment of the Chronicles of Riddick franchise. This confirms some of the rumors that were floating around this past summer, saying that Diesel would be back.

Universal will handle the domestic distribution of the film, which is being titled Riddick. Lionsgate is working on securing the international distribution rights.

As for the script: It was written by David Twohy, the man who co-wrote and directed both Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick and, more recently, A Perfect Getaway.
