‘RED 2′ Looks to Add More Star Power With Anthony Hopkins

If we look back at the extraordinary career of Anthony Hopkins it is plain to see that he has never been afraid to tackle any type of role. Whether it’s been a cannibalistic psychiatrist serial killer, or an Asgardian ruler, Hopkins has always seemed to excel under any circumstances that the script calls for. At 75 years young, Hopkins has shown no signs of slowing down.

Recently it was announced that the Oscar-winning actor would return to reprise his role as Odin in Marvel’s Thor 2, and one thing that’s for certain is Hopkins does not plan on getting out of the game while he still has so much to give us. It would be too easy for him to call it a career and join Sean Connery on Hollywood’s R.E.D. (Retired and Extremely Dangerous) list.

‘RED’ Cast Confirmed for ‘RED 2′; Catherine Zeta-Jones & Byung-hun Lee Also Onboard

Lionsgate has officially confirmed that the cast of 2010′s hit action-comedy Red – featuring members of the over-50 crowd like Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Dame Helen Mirren – will be returning in the sequel, simply titled Red 2.

Moreover, the next Red flick will add some (relatively) younger acting blood to the cast, with new additions like Oscar-winner Catherine-Zeta Jones and Korean actor/Tae Kwon Do specialist Byung-hun Lee (Storm Shadow in the G.I. Joe movie franchise).

‘Red 2′ Snags ‘Galaxy Quest’ Helmer As Director

Seeing how Summit is sticking to a planned Summer 2013 release date for Red 2, it’s long been known that Red director Robert Schwentke wouldn’t be returning for the sequel – as he’ll be busy with post-production on R.I.P.D. when production on the new installment about (sorta) retired special ops agents gets underway. Hence, the search for Schwentke’s replacement has been officially ongoing for some six months now.

A helmer has finally been found in the form of Dean Parisot, who is an Oscar-winner for his 1987 short film “The Appointments of Dennis Jennings” – but is best known for directing comedies like Fun with Dick and Jane and especially Galaxy Quest (a beloved “unofficial” riff on Star Trek).

Lionsgate Acquires Summit: ‘Twilight’ & ‘Hunger Games’ Now Under One Roof

Late in 2011 we brought you news that two of the smaller studios, Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment, were considering merging. As of today, that merger is officially a reality, with Lionsgate having acquired Summit for a combined sum of $412.5 million.

If you are not one of those TV/movie fans who keeps their eye on the business end of the biz: This basically means that young adult movie franchises The Twilight Saga (owned by Summit) and The Hunger Games (owned by Lionsgate) are now sharing the same roof over their heads, alongside Mad Men‘s Don Draper.

‘Ender’s Game’, ‘RED 2′, ‘Warm Bodies’, & More Snag Release Dates

Summit Entertainment has revealed new theatrical release dates and loglines for several noteworthy upcoming projects.

Those titles include: writer/director Gavin Hood’s Ender’s Game adaptation, the currently-directorless action-comedy sequel RED 2, Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies film adaptation, Louis Leterrier’s heist thriller Now You See Me, and Scott Derrickson’s low-budget horror flick Sinister.

Ender’s Game – which is also being produced by sci-fi genre masterminds Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci – will be released in (possibly, both 2D and 3D) theaters around the U.S. on March 15th, 2013. Here is the film’s official logline:

John Moore To Helm ‘Die Hard 5′; Director Being Sought For ‘Red 2′

He may have turned 56 this year, but Bruce Willis is still the (deadly) cowboy onscreen. New installments in two Willis-centric action movie franchises – Die Hard 5 and Red 2 – are likewise more than alive and well, with the studios behind both projects eying a production start date sometime in the next year.

The search is still on for a helmer to call the shots on the sequel to last year’s surprise hit comic book flick, Red; however, John McClane’s fifth crazy adventure has officially snagged a director.

Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

‘RED’ Sequel In The Works

Retirees generally spend their days performing casual tasks, taking up new hobbies, finally tackling that novel they’ve been itching to write for years – unless, of course, you’re one of the former black-ops agents in RED and your days involve a bit more gunfire, bone-cracking combat, and explosions than normal.

RED was a popular draw when it hit theaters last fall and now Summit Entertainment has hired the film’s screenwriters, Jon and Erich Hoeber, for another round with a pack of extremely dangerous senior citizens (just don’t use that term in front of John Malkovich)

Collider has the scoop on a sequel to RED, which grossed an unexpectedly large $164 million worldwide in theaters and managed to snag a Golden Globe nod for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) ...

2011 Golden Globe Award Winners

For 68 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been celebrating their favorites in film and television with the Golden Globe Awards.

Once again, the multifaceted and generally hilarious Ricky Gervais will be serving as host of tonight’s gala. While those in attendance will be filled with anticipation about whether or not they will take home the award in their chosen category, viewers at home will be anxiously waiting to see how far Gervais will push the comedic envelope with his monologue and numerous ad-libs throughout the night.

With 25 separate categories having to fit within tonight’s given time slot, something tells me that Gervais will be moving things along at a swift pace – all while sipping from his iconic glass a beer that always remains not-so-hidden beneath his podium.

Now we turn our attention to the high points of 2010 – namely, the movies that met or exceeded our expectations and entertained us enough so as to earn a permanent spot on our personal favorites films list.

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

Celebrities Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes, and Blair Underwood dragged themselves from the comfort of their beds early this morning to announce the nominations for this year’s other big cinematic awards, the Golden Globes.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has unveiled its nominations for the 68th annual Golden Globes and, like any year’s crop of nominees, there are a few surprise choices, some unexpected snubs, and a number of highly anticipated selections.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 14, 2010

This week:

Unstoppable is stoppable; Dune‘s future is looking bleak; Paramount readies some high-profile films; Warner Bros. want Tales From The Gangster Squad; Courtney Ford needs True Blood; will Merlin have magic? Women kick butt in The Athena Project; Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank and Ashton Kutcher get ready for New Year’s Eve; and lots more.

Last week’s champion Megamind and the Denzel Washington flick Unstoppable (review here), directed by Tony Scott, fought it out for the top spot over the weekend. It looks like the animated superhero film came out on top, after grossing an estimated $30.1 million, upping its total to $89.8 million.

That doesn’t mean that Washington’s film disappointed – as it grossed $23.5 million, which is business as usual for a Washington action effort.

This weekend:

The box office is Mega; Relativity Media cracks the Bible Code; Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver and Robert De Niro turn on Red Lights; Tropic Thunder’s Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux and Steve Coogan go Documental; Eli Roth brings you Psycho Killer and Aaron Eckhart is The Expatriate.

Box Office

Megamind (read our review) flew to the top of the box office after grossing an impressive $47.6 million over the weekend. The 3D animated film features the vocal talents of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and Brad Pitt.

Due Date (read our review) with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis had to settle for second place, but it took in a decent $33.5 million. The film, which was directed by The Hangover’s Todd Phillips, again shows RDJ’s new and reclaimed star power.

A lot of people see Saw; get ready to meet Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter; prepare for The Demonologists, Paul Haggis goes to prison; Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill and Frances O’Connor go hunting; Pete Segal has a Grudge, Daniel Craig’s Dream House is a nightmare; Kilmer and Coppola are Twixt Now and Sunrise and lots more.

Box Office

Saw 3D (read our review and Saw in 6:66 feature) ousted Paranormal Activity 2 from the top spot and secured the lead over the Halloween weekend. The 3D horror sequel brought in an estimated $24.5 million to scare the beejeezus out of audiences- not bad for a film with a $20 million budget. While it’s not the best start for the franchise, it does beat the debut of last year’s installment. This might not be the last Saw after all.

This weekend Paranormal Activity 2 captures the top spot; Tea Leoni joins Tower Heist; Shawn Ryan is Without Remorse; Pierre Morel is taken by Ouija; Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale have Contraband; Richard Branson and McG discover America, and more.

Box Office

Paranormal Activity 2 (read our review) scared away all the competition over the weekend. The horror sequel grossed a mighty $43.5 million over the three days– not bad for a film that only cost just $3 million to produce.

Jackass 3D dropped to second place after grossing almost 60% less than last weekend’s debut. Don’t feel too sorry for the Jackass crew – as the film still nabbed another $21 million for a $87 million total.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: October 17, 2010

This week:

Jackass 3D hits the top spot at the box office while Bruce Willis sees Red; J.J. Abrams is Infinitely Polar Bear; Samuel L. Jackson heads Holmes with Hawkshaw; Joe Carnahan tackles Umbra; Catherine Hardwicke moves from Edward & Bella to Romeo & Juliet; Noomi Rapace sets sail on The Last Voyage of The Demeter; Luke Evans and Alice Eve join John Cusack in The Raven and there’s lots more.

After several weeks of serious adult-skewed films holding the top spot at the box office, it looked like audiences wanted to let loose and relax by watching grown men getting hit in the crotch with the full 3D experience. This thirst for pain is the reason that the number one position was filled by Jackass 3D (read our review here). The $20 million budgeted comedy brought in a stellar $49.5 million, easily capturing the number one spot.

No, I don’t usually start movie reviews that way, but I’ve seen RED twice (the first time was an unfinished work print) and I liked it even more upon the second viewing. Now keep in mind that I have not read the comic book series that the film is based on (although I did read the prequel comics for the film) – and from what I’ve heard the movie is very different from the print version. I can’t predict how fans of the comic will react to the film, but on its own it’s a hell of a lot of fun.
