Red Dawn Remake Finally Gets A Release Date

The long stagnating Red Dawn remake looks set to finally see the light of day, with a designated release date on the horizon. According to Box Office Mojo, the film will hit screens on November 2, 2012 – three years after filming wrapped.

A big black cloud has been hanging over Red Dawn in the form of the MGM bankruptcy saga, but, as reported here in September, independent distributor FilmDistrict struck a deal to finally get the film into cinemas, not matter how long it takes.

The film is the first foray into directing by former stuntman Dan Bradley, who once donned the hockey mask to play Jason Voorhees in Jason Lives: Friday The 13th: Part VI.

FilmDistrict To Release MGM’s ‘Red Dawn’ Remake

It’s been months since we’ve talked about the Red Dawn remake here at Screen Rant. What happened? Did ~~Chinese~~ North Korean spies break into MGM and run off with the prints of the film?

No, I’m afraid it was nothing that exciting. Red Dawn merely got caught up in the long and tortuous MGM bankruptcy saga. That all appears to be over now, though, as independent studio FilmDistrict is striking a deal with MGM to release the film to theaters next year.

According to the L.A. Times, FilmDistrict will likely release Red Dawn in 2012, three years after the movie was produced. While this would be a problem for many films, the long delay between production and release may end up being a boon for the Red Dawn remake.

C2E2 has descended on Chicago once again – and one of the convention’s most anticipated events this year was a Q&A with Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth. He fielded questions about the making of that film, his preparation for The Avengers, and also spoke briefly about his involvement with the upcoming Red Dawn remake and Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods.

Hemsworth began by explaining what the audition process for Thor was like and revealed that it actually took three or four months of callbacks before he landed the part. As it turns out, Joss Whedon had a hand in helping him get cast.

‘Red Dawn’ Villains Switched from China to North Korea

MGM’s upcoming remake of Red Dawn was supposed to hit theaters in 2010, but the studio’s well-documented bankruptcy saga effectively put all of the projects they had in the pipeline on hold.

Since its recent restructuring, MGM has pushed high-profile projects like The Hobbit, Bond 23, and the RoboCop reboot back into development – but there’s been no official confirmation of when films that were completed before the company filed for Chapter 11 will be released.

Red Dawn will likely hit theaters at some point this year, but the film (which wrapped production in 2009) has one more significant alteration to undergo before it will be ready to hit theaters. Back in 2009 MGM hit the ground running with their remake of the classic ’80s invasion film, Red Dawn. At first there was a whirlwind of activity as the studio moved ahead with project by hiring a director, casting characters and finding shoot locations in Michigan. Fans of the project felt their excitement build as behind-the-scenes pictures and set videos began popping up online – all of which was supposed to culminate with the September 2010 release.

MGM Bankruptcy Saga Ends – Will Bond Be Back Soon?

As we previously reported, MGM has finally filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York. After more than a year of trying to select a specific reorganization plan, MGM has ultimately gone with the plan that names Spyglass Entertainment as the new head of MGM.

Specifically, the plan appoints Spyglass co-heads Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum as co-CEOs of MGM; it was approved by MGM’s board of over 100 lenders, who will trade almost $4 billion in debt for 95% collective stake in the restructured studio.

Despite a last minute bid by MGM debt holder Carl Icahn and his studio, Lionsgate, to take over MGM, the Spyglass deal was approved and has now officially been set in motion. The court will have 30 days to review and approve the plan; if ...

Lionsgate Making A Last Minute Play for MGM

The MGM bankruptcy saga is still unfolding, folks. Last we reported, Spyglass Entertainment was enacting procedures to take over MGM. Spyglass currently has a reorganization plan set in place, and MGM’s board of over 100 lenders have only to vote on the plan and approve it, before Spyglass CEOs Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum would take over MGM.

However, Lionsgate – another mini-studio that has been making a bid for MGM throughout this saga – is apparently not going down without a fight.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Lionsgate has employed the services of investors Carl Icahn and Gordon Crawford of LA-based Capital Research to help pitch a new proposal to MGM in order to lure its creditors away from the Spyglass deal. MGM Gets Another Extension; ‘Bond’ & ‘Hobbit’ Still on Hold

MGM has been granted yet another extension by its creditors, the sixth delay in the studio’s bankruptcy meltdown. If not for this latest extension, the studio would have been forced to either find creditors or file bankruptcy by the end of Wednesday. Needless to say they don’t have the money yet.

The new deadline will be September 15th, and by that time (nearly a year since this fiasco began) MGM will have hopefully settled on a restructuring deal that will help the studio avoid having to sell off its assets in order to pay back the debt it owes to over 140 lenders.

The fallout from MGM’s bankruptcy troubles is getting uglier and uglier. First were the delays to The Hobbit, which was set to go into production this year; that debacle forced director Guillermo del Toro to drop the film, even after rearranging his entire life around it. Next came the news that the next James Bond film would be delayed – another movie set to go into production this year.

Well, the latest casualty of the MGM pooch screw is the Red Dawn remake, which is already in post-production and was set to hit theaters this winter. Cue the widespread groaning.

This is a bittersweet moment for me. First one of the truly last great men of Hollywood, Patrick Swayze, dies (the bitter) from his long battle with cancer yesterday. Then, the day after, we get some behind-the-scenes pictures of the new Red Dawn remake (the sweet) courtesy of a heads-up by our friends at AICN.

Patrick Swayze Dies At 57

It’s a sad today today as another great actor passes away.

Patrick Swayze, 57, has lost his difficult battle with cancer and passed away today with his family at his side.

The star actor had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer early last year and while he’d been fighting through it when patients with this type of cancer expect to only live six months, it didn’t stop the cowboy from working and keeping optimistic, acting as an inspiration to everyone around him. It got a lot worse recently and he had been forced to rely on a wheelchair – but he still kept wearing his cowboy hat and not giving up.

Red Dawn Remake Adds Four More To Its Cast

Entertainment Weekly is exclusively reporting that MGM’s remake of Red Dawn has just added four more actors to its cast: Josh Hutcherson (Journey to the Center of the Earth), Isabel Lucas (Transformers 2), Edwin Hodge (Mental) and Connor Cruise (Seven Pounds). The four additions join the already announced Chris Hemsworth (who’s also playing the titular hero in Marvel’s Thor), Josh Peck and Adrianne Palicki.

The original 1984 version of Red Dawn was about a bunch of Colorado High School students who team up under the banner of the school football team, The Wolverines, to fight back against Soviet and Cuban troops who invade their school. Directed by John Milius, the film starred Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, Brad Savage, Darren Dalton, and Jennifer Grey.

Jerry Bruickheimer’s G-Force shot into the number one position this week with a weekend take of $32 million. The Disney family film looks set to hit the $100 million mark giving Bruickheimer another century hit.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince had to settle for second place over the weekend. Down 60% from last weekend, the wonderful wizard flick brought in another $30 million, giving the Warner Bros pic a magical gross of almost $222 million. Supernatural has a wild season coming up with the Winchester brothers going head to head with Satan / Lucifer / the Devil. No matter how much we like and root for the Winchesters, I’m not sure how they’re going to pull off taking on the man from down below himself.

With season five dealing with what comes of the final seal being broken, we’re going to be seeing some new faces and a few old faces.

This should be interesting.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: June 21, 2009

This week:

First there’s The Proposal and then there’s The Hangover; Moneyball gets thrown a curve-ball; Scream 4 isn’t Neve Campbell’s favorite scary movie; it looks like The A-Team won’t be Common and there’s an up and coming Red Dawn.

Box Office

Sandra Bullock scored the biggest opening of her career with The Proposal. The romantic comedy which co-stars Ryan Reynolds grossed $34 million over the weekend.

The Hangover remained a popular choice and moved into the runner-up spot with a weekend take of $26 million. With $152 million in the bank after three weeks, it looks like this is going to be a hugely profitable film and franchise for Warner Bros.

Up took in another $21 million from Friday to Monday giving the Pixar film a mighty $224 million tally.
