It is fitting that this week is small in scale as three low-budget movies hit DVD and Blu-ray. All three earned great reviews from critics, but only one stood out – The King’s Speech.

A Blu-ray re-release of Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation should entertain fans of the franchise if the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy isn’t enough. Now you can watch one of the “worst lines in movie history” on Blu-ray.

Tonight, the who’s who in Hollywood are gathered at the illustrious Kodak Theatre for the 83rd Academy Awards.

With The Social Network and The King’s Speech proving to be this year’s favorites, it appears that all of the suspense is gone of hearing who will take home the coveted Oscar. Of course, if the mixture of Hollywood and live television has taught us anything, surprises can and do happen.

Oscar 2011 Predictions: Who Will Win – And Who SHOULD Win

UPDATE: Well the Oscars are over and we nailed it in all except two categories with our predictions. Check out the full list of Oscar Winners 2011.

This weekend movie fans will bear witness to the 83rd Academy Awards, and like in years past, the 2011 Oscar race is shaping up to be more a confirmation of what everybody already suspects, rather than a thrilling race between neck-and-neck films, actors, and directors who are all hoping to walk away basking in Oscar’s glory.

With films like Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, True Grit, The Social Network, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, and even Iron Man 2 up for nominations in different categories, the 2011 Oscars ceremony will offer something for arthouse, mainstream, and fanboy cinephiles alike.

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

‘The Fighter’ Leads 2011 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations

The Screen Actors Guild announced nominations for the 17th annual SAG Awards this morning.

The nominees reaffirmed many of the front-runners for possible Academy Award nominations.

In the leading female actor category, Natalie Portman earned a rightful nomination for her work in Black Swan, but she’ll be running against stiff competition from Nicole Kidman in Rabbit Hole, along with many other notable actresses. In the leading male actor category, Jeff Bridges was recognized for his take on the iconic character of Rooster Cogburn in True Grit, but he’ll face strong competition from young actors Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network and James Franco in 127 Hours.

Lionsgate Releases Trailer for Drama ‘Rabbit Hole’

Lionsgate recently released the trailer for the drama film, Rabbit Hole. The movie, starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart, revolves around a married couple fighting to keep their relationship together after the tragic death of their child. James Cameron Mitchell directed the film, which also stars Dianne Wiest as Nat, the mother to Nicole Kidman’s character.

Rabbit Hole is an adaptation of a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David Lindsay-Abaire, and has received rave reviews from the festival circuit. Nicole Kidman’s performance in particular has received considerable praise. From the trailer alone, you can tell that the movie deals with some pretty heavy stuff. Of course, that’s exactly the kind of thing that Academy members like to see come awards season, so don’t be surprised if the movie ends up in the running for multiple Oscars.

Lionsgate Acquires Oscar-Contender ‘Rabbit Hole’

Lionsgate is planning to make a big splash in this year’s Oscar race with the Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart drama, Rabbit Hole. According to Deadline, Lionsgate acquired the North American distribution rights for the critically-acclaimed film with hopes to release it before the end of the year.

Rabbit Hole, which is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David Lindsay-Abaire, details the life of a once-happy married couple whose lives are brought to a halt when their son is killed in an auto accident. The unexpected tragedy tests the couple’s marriage, forcing them to confront their grief and figure out a way to move on with their lives.

Lindsay-Abaire personally adapted the play for the big screen. The film, which was shot in under a month on a tight $10 million budget, was directed ...

Movie News Wrap Up: April 6, 2009

This week:

The box office is Furious; Jack Bauer leaves 24 for Joel Schumacher’s Twelve; Paul Weitz looks at Little Fockers; Rosemarie DeWitt and Chris Cooper are Company Men; Aaron Eckhart and Nicole Kidman stare into the Rabbit Hole; we make a date for Sex and The City 2 and Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg are Prisoners.

Box office
Vin Diesel and Paul Walker raced into the number one position with Fast and Furious. The action sequel banked a massive $72 million over the weekend – showing that there is plenty of gas left in the Fast and Furious franchise. Maybe Vin Diesel will get those Riddick movies made after all.

Monster vs. Aliens dropped to second place but it still managed to gross $33 million giving the animated film a gross of over $100 million.

The Haunting in Connecticut took another $9.6 million bringing the total gross to a pretty decent $37 ...
