Tonight, the who’s who of Hollywood are gathered at the illustrious Kodak Theatre for the 84th Academy Awards.

With Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist leading the way with the most Oscar nominations for 2012, this year’s Oscars could very well become a battle of theatrical homages. That being said, Hugo and The Artist are going to have to overcome the competition that Tate Taylor’s The Help has been bringing to this year’s award shows.

Of course, no matter who takes home the coveted Oscar this year, all eyes are on Billy Crystal as he makes his long-awaited return as host of Hollywood’s most prestigious awards show.

Screen Rant will be here live to discuss the 84th Academy Awards as they happen and we’re inviting you to chat with us at 8:00pm EST.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone, The Hunger Games) jointly announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards this morning, on Tuesday January 24th. The actual 2012 Oscar ceremony will take place next month, on February 26th at the Kodak theater – with Billy Crystal serving as host, for the ninth time in his career.

In the aftermath of the 2012 Golden Globes ceremony, Hollywood “in-crowd” types like George Clooney and Meryl Streep are favored to take home the gold for acting, while multiple Globe-winning films such as The Artist and The Descendants are considered heavyweight contenders for the coveted Best Picture Oscar.

A relatively subdued Ricky Gervais took the stage as host of the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards. In his second year as host, it appears that all of last year’s controversy surrounding Gervais’ hosting must have impacted the funnyman, as all of his jabs appeared a little too nice compared to what was said last year.

For much of the evening, Michael Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film homage, The Artist, swept the Golden Globes in the comedy category, coming out on top overall with three wins for Best Original Score, Best Actor and Best Picture. Over on the drama side, Alexander Payne’s The Descendants took home the most awards in the drama category with a Best Actor win for George Clooney and Best Picture.

Other notable wins in the film category were Meryl ...

Click to continue reading 2012 Golden Globe Awards: Winners List

Much-ballyhooed (in a good and bad way) comedian Ricky Gervais will be back to host the Annual Golden Globes Ceremony for a third time in 2012, when the 69th annual iteration of the event takes place.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has officially announced its nominations for the 2012 Golden Globes show – and, just like any year, there are many obvious selections, a few surprises, and more than a handful of choices that are bound to rub moviegoers of all shades the wrong (or, in some cases, the right) way.

Filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film homage, The Artist, led the way with six Globe nods total; co-writer/helmer Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and director Tate Taylor’s The Help were close behind.
This week:

Twilight‘s Breaking Dawn tops the box office-again; The Muppets score the runner-up spot and Hugo fails to light up the chart on its second week of release.

No major releases were unleashed by studios over the weekend, meaning that movie-goers had to make do with Thanksgiving leftovers. This meant that Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1 ruled the roost for the third week in a row. The vampire romance banked $16.9 million over the weekend and upped its cume to a powerful $247.3 million. The Bill Condon directed film has now brought in over $500 globally – a great number, especially after only three weeks on release, and one that will continue to climb.

The Muppets held onto the number two spot, bringing in $11.2 million worth of green.
Thanksgiving weekend saw some strong numbers at the box office, but there were no major break-out hits. A crowded market place saw quite a few solid numbers, but the overall weekend was down compared to last year.

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1 was the undisputed king, taking in $42 million over the three days. The vampire film now has a total of $221 million, which is double the production budget. The Robert Pattinson/Kristen Stewart/Taylor Lautner love triangle has now scored about $400 million around the globe.

The Muppets (read our review) made their debut at #2 – taking $43.5 million worth of green (yeah, Kermit) since its Wendesday launch ($29.5 million over the three days). That just about covers the film’s production budget, but Disney did a heavy marketing push for ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: November 27th, 2011

The penultimate installment of the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn-Part 1 topped the box office over the weekend grossing a massive $139 million. This fourth big screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s novel series banked $72 million on Friday – the third highest opening day ever behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’s $91 million and The Twilight Saga: New Moon’s $72.7 million.

Longevity is the key here, and Breaking Dawn (read our review) will undoubtedly be front-loaded, taking a massive hit next weekend. Although, having said that – the vampire romance has already covered its $110 million production budget, but it’ll be interesting to see if it beats the franchise high of Eclipse’s ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: November 20th, 2011

This weekend the box office took an upward turn, but like many school reports – it could have been better.

Immortals topped the box office with a weekend take of $32 million. It’s not a bad number, but not great if compared to the debuts of similarly themed films like 300 ($70 million) and Clash of the Titans ($60 million). Next weekend’s hold will be the real test, and there is a chance that this will hit $100 million domestic, but profit will probably be earned through foreign grosses. Immortals (read our review), directed by Tarsem Singh, stars new Superman Henry Cavill and Mickey Rourke.

Adam Sandler’s latest comedy Jack and Jill opened at two. The $26 million gross is slightly lower than usual for a Sandler film, but his films routinely ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: November 13th, 2011

This week:

Puss in Boots steals the top spot from Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller; Harold and Kumar have a flat 3D debut and Paranormal Activity 3 continues to scare audiences.

Word of the week: Disappointment.

Puss in Boots led the way at the box office – beating the combined star wattage of Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. The animated film dropped just 10% from last week, grossing an impressive $33 million. The Shrek spin-off now has $76.6 million in the kitty, with more on the way as the holiday season approaches.

$24.6 million is quite a disappointment for director Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist, as the film was expected to steal the top spot. The Ben Stiller/Eddie Murphy film has had decent reviews (read ours), but it failed to connect with audiences. The heist caper ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: November 6th, 2011

Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots (read our review) topped the box office over the weekend with an estimated $33 million take.

Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick reviews Puss in Boots

Despite great box office returns, over time, many film fans began to tire of the Shrek franchise’s repeated formula of mixing classic fairy tale characters, pop culture references, and adult humor couched in family-friendly CGI fun. Shrek 2 was the most successful installment in the franchise (and currently sits at number 5 in “All Time Box Office” numbers) but the final film, Shrek Forever After, barely managed to do half of those numbers.

As a result, it wasn’t particularly surprising when DreamWorks Animation announced that they intended to produce a spinoff centered around fan-favorite feline swordsman, Puss in Boots. Has DreamWorks injected Puss‘ solo venture with the same care and comedy smarts as the earlier Shrek installments – or is the ...

Click to continue reading ‘Puss in Boots’ Review

The second 'Puss in Boots' trailer suggests the film will be a pleasant family-friendly cartoon that marks an improvement on the last couple of 'Shrek' movies.

While pretty much everyone loves Shrek’s incarnation of Puss in Boots (as voiced by Antonio Banderas) it’s hard to not be skeptical about the idea of the character headlining his own spinoff – especially since the Shrek movie franchise seemingly ran out of gas, even before last year’s final installment.

However, the full-length Puss in Boots trailer suggested the character’s solo adventure could be the sort of colorful and fun family-friendly flick that even grown-ups should get a few chuckles out of. The second theatrical preview, thankfully, only supports that idea.

There are definitely traces of Shrek DNA in the Puss in Boots footage glimpsed so far – not to mention, the quality of animation in the DreamWorks’ title remains a notch below that of its biggest “competitor,” Pixar.
When you were first told that DreamWorks was making a Puss in Boots movie, chances are good your immediate thought was that it would basically amount to Shrek 5. The official Puss in Boots teaser didn’t do much to convince moviegoers otherwise, seeing as it featured many of the same elements as the Shrek franchise – namely pop music tunes, references to other films, and a premise that promised to offer a “hip” and comical spin on a classic fairy tale.

Now an official Puss in Boots trailer has been released – and while it’s doesn’t exactly make the movie look fantastic, it does suggest that director Chris Miller (Shrek the Third) went in a more original direction with this animated adventure.

“Adventure” surprisingly abounds in the ...

Click to continue reading ‘Puss in Boots’ Trailer Is Surprisingly Not Like ‘Shrek 5′

Shrek 2 introduced the world to the Antonio Banderas-voiced version of Puss in Boots, and the adorable but lethal feline was an instant hit with moviegoers. Two underwhelming installments later and the Shrek franchise has seemingly reached the end of its rope – which in Hollywood means its time for either a spinoff or reboot.

DreamWorks Animation decided to go with the former, and has now released a teaser trailer, along with an official movie poster, for Puss in Boot’s upcoming solo vehicle.

Originally planned as a direct-to-DVD feature, Puss in Boots will hit theaters this fall and be shown in 2D, 3D, and even IMAX 3D as well. Banderas is back to voice the suave orange cat, whose days as an adventurer prior to his meeting up with Shrek are explored in this film – because ...

Click to continue reading ‘Puss in Boots’ Teaser Trailer & Poster

Guillermo del Toro is taking his planned animated movie 'Trollhunters' to Dreamworks Animation, where he will also work on other projects such as 'Kung Fu Panda 2'.

Last year it was reported that Guillermo del Toro would be making a new animated movie entitled Trollhunters as the first movie from Double Dare You, a new animation studio set up over at Disney. However, fast-forward a year and it appears (for whatever reason) that del Toro is making Trollhunters at a different studio.

Heat Vision reports del Toro landing at Dreamworks Animation, where he’ll write and direct Trollhunters (apparently that’s a working title but I personally like it as is). Del Toro visited the studio’s campus in California every week for most of this past summer and has decided to “move in” in a manner of speaking.

Not only will del Toro write and direct Trollhunters at Dreamworks, he’ll also serve as a consultant and exec producer on lots of other projects ...

Click to continue reading Del Toro Lands At Dreamworks Animation With ‘Trollhunters’

Shrek 4, I mean Shrek: Forever After may not have been Oscar material, but the $223 million the film has made, thus far, certainly makes it spin-off material.

Since the latest Shrek installment was purported to also be the Ogre’s last installment, it’s not surprising that a Puss In Boots film is already en route. Now, we’ve got a first, all though painfully generic, first production image to check out.

Attempting to capture the Shrek: Forever After buzz (before Toy Story 3 entirely overshadows it), DreamWorks rolled out the Puss in Boots image – which features the title character, sword-wielding and boots included, as well as a seductive looking she-cat, Kitty… wearing a belt.

Check out the image below:

The Hangover star Zach Galifianakis is certainly making a name for himself as of late: after starring in the $461 million comedy smash hit this summer, he has garnered himself a slew of roles (which is unsurprising – he was hilarious in The Hangover), the latest of which is voicing children’s nursery rhyme character, Humpty Dumpty, in the upcoming Shrek spin-off movie, Puss In Boots.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Galifianakis is in talks to voice Humpty Dumpty, and if cast he’ll be joining the voice of Puss In Boots himself, Antonio Banderas, as well as Salma Hayek who’s voicing “Kitty.” The spin-off will be written by Tom Wheeler, and will be a prequel (an origin story, we’ve heard) leading up to the feisty feline’s meeting-up with Shrek and Co. in Shrek 2.

A few months ago we posted about the fact that the upcoming Shrek spin-off movie featuring Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas) would be an origin story. We learned that the movie would deal with the early years of the feisty feline, and later we also learned that it would feature new characters (read: no Shrek, no Princess Fiona, no Donkey).

However, thanks to Latino Review, we get word that the above may not be entirely the case. El Guapo from LR got a chance to talk to Banderas at a junket for his new movie, The Other Man, where he asked the actor about how the Puss in Boots movie was going. On top of revealing an apparent new Halloween special featuring the character (which I’ll get to in a sec), Banderas ...

Click to continue reading Antonio Banderas Talks Puss In Boots Spin-Off

Recently, Antonio Banderas revealed that the Puss in Boots spin-off to the Shrek franchise would be a fully fledged origin story, telling the tales of the feisty feline right from a young age and, obviously, before we first saw him in Shrek 2. And even though in lieu of that information, the following is quite obvious, this now officially confirms it: Puss in Boots will not feature any of the characters from the Shrek series, other than Puss, that is!

In speaking with Movehole (thanks to /Film), David H. Steinberg confirmed that the Puss in Boots spin-off movie will feature all new characters, with no sign of Shrek, Fiona, Donkey or any of the other recurring characters from the Shrek series:

“[It will feature] all new characters – except Puss… ‘It doesn’t overlap with Shrek at all.
