We are about the enter the age of video game movies and while we’ve seen plenty of terrible adaptations over the years, Hollywood has only scratched the surface of the major video game properties available. With the growing push towards deeper stories and photo-realistic graphics and characters, let alone the growing list of Hollywood talent providing voices and likeness to video games, it’s an inevitability that video games are going the way of comic book films.

Two weeks ago, video game publisher/developer Ubisoft officially announced the formation of Ubisoft Motion Pictures with the goal of adapting their major franchise until feature films and television projects. 2011 People’s Choice Awards Winners

For 37 years, the People’s Choice Awards has been celebrating the fan favorites in film, television and music. In preparation for tonight’s awards ceremony, over 35 million votes were cast by the American public in hopes that their favorite film, television series, actor or musician will take home this coveted award.

For the second year in a row, the multifaceted Queen Latifah will be serving as host of this fanatical gala. With over 43 separate categories having to fit within the given timeslot, something tells me that Queen Latifah is going to be forced to move things along at a swift pace in order to fit each category within the 2-hour time-limit.

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: September 14th, 2010

This week is pretty thin in terms of home video releases, but there are two re-releases worth noting. The two new releases are not for everybody, but a select crowd will dish out the money for the latest movie.

The summer action movies are making their way to home video now and Prince of Persia is leading the charge. Right behind it is the romantic Letters to Juliet.

However, it’s the two re-releases that have me on the starting blocks and ready to sprint to my nearest store. One of David Fincher’s masterpieces and a mind-bending film starring Tim Robbins make their way to your Blu-ray collection this week.

2010 Scream Award Nominations

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Prince of Persia is the Highest-Grossing Video Game Movie Ever

The video game movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time may not make many best of 2010 lists, but the film can file at least one achievement away: it’s banked the most money of any video game movie.

The folks over at Film Junk have pointed out something that may be a bit surprising: Prince of Persia is now the highest grossing movie that’s based on a video game. Although domestically it’s only racked up $82 million in just under four weeks, the numbers have more than made up for that internationally with a solid $213 million.

That’s a total of $295 million worldwide so far, and that number will only rise since the movie is still playing in theaters. It’s nowhere near breaking any all-time box office records (Avatar ...

Toy Story shows Jonah Hex that making money at the box office isn’t child’s play; Miley Cyrus decides to Wake; Louis Leterrier loses Gravity; Robert Downey Jr. is the new Steve McQueen in Yucatan; Sam Worthington and McG Mean War and lots more.

Box Office

Toy Story 3 did the massive business that everybody anticipated. The second animated sequel in the fifteen year old franchise should score a massive $111 million over the weekend. The Disney/Pixar film has the added bonus of showing on 3D screens, but it should also enjoy strong legs and play quite well into the summer.

The Karate Kid is kicking serious butt at the box office. The Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan film should have a weekend take of just under $29 million. By the time alarm clocks go ...

Movie News Wrap Up: June 7, 2010

Box Office

Everyone thought that Shrek 4 would underperform. Mediocre reviews and audience fatigue seemed to indicate that the animated film wouldn’t be a huge hit. Sometimes everyone can be wrong. Shrek brought in another $25 million over the weekend, giving it a total box office take of $184 million. Next weekend it should cross $200 million. It’s still not as successful as the other films in the series, but considering that this is the fourth film in the franchise, it’s doing okay.

The opening for Get Him To The Greek was far from a tragedy after grossing $17.4 million on its debut weekend. The Forgetting Sarah Marshall spin-off starring Jonah Hill and Russell Brand should end its run with about $60 million if all goes well.

Mr. Einstein could have very well been talking about Hollywood and all of the video game movies turds it has squeezed out in the past 27 years. Some people incorrectly think the wretched Super Mario Brothers kicked off the video game movie trend in 1993 but actually it started way back in 1984 with the thriller Cloak & Dagger, based off the Atari game, starring a young Henry Thomas (E.T.) and Dabney Coleman.

My usual video game-based movie disclaimer: I know nothing about the game – I’ve never even seen it, so this review will be based on the movie only.

In Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Jake Gyllenhaal plays Dastan, an adopted prince who was taken in by the King of Persia when he was a young boy. He has two royal brothers (blood sons of the King) who are obviously nobility – Dastan, however has never shaken his roguish, street-wise roots and is a favorite of the citizens… going out mixing it up and fighting for fun.

Walt Disney Pictures has released additional footage from its upcoming adventure flick Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the Mouse House’s big-budget adaptation of the popular video game of the same name.

Prince of Persia – which is directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) – revolves around one Prince Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal), a ruggish warrior who seeks to protect an ancient dagger capable of controlling time itself from the villainous warlord Nizam (Ben Kingsley) – a quest he is aided on by the mysterious Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton).

Will Prince of Persia break the trend of previous video game-based movies and be a financial and/or critical success? Based off this early footage it should at least leave a better impression on moviegoers than the infamous 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. ...

New ‘Prince of Persia’ Featurette

There’s a new, music video-style featurette online for the upcoming big-budget video game adaptation Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time that showcases the romance between the Prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) and the warrior princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton).

Viewers take note – those hoping for some deep insight into the dynamics of the relationship between these character from the actors portraying them will unfortunately be disappointed.

Those who seek some cool visual FX shots involving time travel – in addition to footage of Gyllenhaal showing off his ripped body while rehearsing the choreography for the film’s fight sequences - should definitely get their fill .

Over the last few months we’ve been seeing various behind-the-scenes featurettes pop up for the upcoming video game adaptation, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The first one focused on the main character of Prince Dastan, the second focused on the titular Sands of Time and why everyone covets them, and the third focused more on the epic nature of the film.

To add to those first three featurettes we have a new one which focuses more on the story, particularly explaining just what the heck the Sands of Time are (not everyone has played the games, remember). It also quickly covers how/why the main character is able to jump around on walls and between buildings.

Second Prince of Persia Trailer is More Epic

The first official full length trailer for Disney’s adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time released back in November and highlighted the special effects driven scenery and action that moviegoers will witness in the summer blockbuster.

IGN has just released the second Prince of Persia trailer today and it’s quite a bit better than the first. Featuring more story elements and a little bit more “epic” if you’re a fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean and The Mummy type epics and Jerry Bruckheimer’s trademark style, then you should definitely watch this.

The trailer doesn’t reveal too much new overall but it does feature more story elements through Gemma Arterton’s exposition/narration intertwined with quick action shots. We also get to see a bit more of the use of the dagger ...

Super Bowl XLIV‎ is over and the Saints were able to shut down Peyton Manning and the Colts, but we’re not here to talk about that. It’s often said that the majority of viewers tune into the big game just for the commercials, so on that note we have some TV spots for upcoming movies for you.
