Sequels are definitely a mixed bag in terms of quality, but one of their advantages is an audience’s immediate connection and empathy towards a familiar and (hopefully) beloved character. No one really cares what’s inside the Temple of Doom or where the Holy Grail is hidden, they just want to go on another adventure with Indiana Jones.

Our interest and investment in these characters and their worlds often percolates in the years (or sometimes decades) between installments, and the opportunity to revisit them is often greeted with unmatched fervor – which makes it enormously disappointing as you watch a film unfold and realize that while the character on the big screen may look and sound the way you remember, something is… missing.

2011 Razzies Shortlist: The Worst Films and Performances of 2010

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31^st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24^th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

The categories this year are pretty much the same as last year – Worst Screenplay, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actor/Actress, Worst ...

NASA Announcement: In Which Alien Category Does It Belong?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, don’t have access to the internet, or have been immersed in a 24 hour marathon session of World of Warcraft, then you should be fully aware of the NASA announcement stating that they discovered a new (alien) life form living in a lake bed in California. Well not really “alien” but that’s what some are calling it – since it’s so completely different than any existing life form.

Adrien Brody Talks ‘Predators’ Sequel & Being an Action Hero

At the 2010 New York Comic-Con I had a chance to speak with Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody about his role in Predators, the reboot of the sci-fi/horror series made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger and director John McTiernan back in 1987.

The Predators DVD/Blu-ray is scheduled to hit stores next week, and Brody talked freely about the chances of his coming back for the already-planned Predators sequel, as well as how he’s dealt with the cold reception from those who don’t think he can play an action star.

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

The Expendables has pretty much punched its way into theaters on swagger alone, by collecting some of the most badass tough guys ever to appear onscreen into one unbeatable team. With names like Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Terry Crews, and Mickey Rourke all in one film (with appearances from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, no less), it’s hard to dispute that The Expendables is an impressive collection of name-taking ass-kickers.

Angelina Jolie’s Salt can’t beat Inception; Adam McKay goes from The Other Guys to The Boys; Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in a Rush; a pair of Schmucks take a Cruise of the Gods; Wahlberg has a lot Happening with The Raven, Five Bothers and The Brazilian Job; Steven Seagal delivers some Justice; and we see Brad Pitt play Moneyball.

Box Office

Christopher Nolan’s Inception remained the box office champion over the weekend. The Dark Knight director’s latest film should steal another $44 million worth of moviegoers’ cash by the time Monday morning rolls around.

Robert Rodriguez Confirms ‘Predators’ Sequel

Robert Rodriguez is in attendance at this year’s Comic-Con to promote Machete, but he took a moment to address speculation about a sequel to Predators – and offered insight into what fans can expect from a follow-up.

Modestly-budgeted for a summer blockbuster, Predators quickly recouped its expenses and received mostly positive reviews. It should come as no surprise that 20th Century Fox is hungry to repeat that success. The ending of the film certainly hinted at the possibility of further installments and Rodriguez confirms that he’s been approached to get the ball rolling on a sequel.

Inception boggles the mind at number one while Nic Cage and Jerry Bruckheimer’s Apprentice has no magic; Sandra Vergara joins Fright Night; Christopher McQuarrie has only One Shot; Sam Raimi’s Oz The Great And Powerful has a start date; Warner Bros. start World War X; two TV stars play Moneyball and lots more.

Box Office

Anyone who didn’t think that Inception wouldn’t open at number one this weekend was very silly indeed. It wasn’t that the film wouldn’t open big, the question was “how big?” - $62 million is the answer. The Christopher Nolan directed film has won itself awesome reviews and strong word-of-mout, meaning that the film should have very impressive legs – if the average Joe isn’t put off by the complex plot. However, the marketing of “James Bond meets The Matrix” would imply that audiences will come.

Despicable Me was the box office champ over the weekend. The Steve Carell voiced 3D toon should gross an impressive $58 million by Monday morning. The tattoo-clad Yakuza (“japanese gangster”) Hanzo – no, not Hattori from Kill Bill – is the latest Predators character to get his own featurette before the flick hit theaters here in the states next Friday.

There is also a new behind-the-scenes clip to check out as well, which features Predators producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimród Antal giving a brief tour of Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios and one of the sets for the film’s alien world setting.

‘Predators’ Clips Feature Tension and Thrills

As if you needed anymore convincing to see Nimrod Antal’s Predators reboot, 20th Century Fox has just released the first two clips from the movie to wet your appetite even more.

Predators takes a group of “the most dangerous killers on the planet” and pits them against the deadly titular killers. Do we really need much more of a plot than that? The impressive cast features the likes of Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne, Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Danny Trejo and Topher Grace.

The first two clips thankfully suggest that Predators is going to be one of the better reboots out there, simultaneously keeping the tone of the original film while bringing something fresh to the table.

As the release of the Predators reboot draws ever closer, the marketing for the film has certainly ramped up. To add to the trailers we’ve already seen, a new trailer for the movie have been released which you can watch below.

Onscreen in their own movie for the first time since 1990′s Predator 2, Predators goes back to what made the first film so awesome: it takes a team of tough guys (and gal!) and pits them against the deadliest killers imaginable, showing the killings (blood and all) and not watering them down (AVP 1 & 2, anyone?). Simple enough premise that should provide for some kick-ass action and excitement.

From the looks of it so far, Predators has captured the magic and menace of the first film perfectly. And this latest international trailer does nothing to change that ...

New ‘Predators’ Images Reveal the Monsters

The battle between Predator and Man gets an upgrade this summer in 20th Century Fox’s Predators, the new sci-fi/action thriller that is being produced by potential Deadpool director Robert Rodriguez and helmed by Nimród Antal (Armored).

We now have an excellent photo gallery for Predators that includes several detailed pics of the alien hunters’ slightly improved (but still recognizable) design – not to mention images of the human characters looking understandably distressed about their current circumstances.

‘Predators’ Stalk the Cover of Widescreen Magazine

Widescreen magazine has Predators as their cover story this month and ShockTillYouDrop has posted the image. It gives us another look at some of the characters from the film including an unbelievably awesome peek at one of the titular creatures.

I have to say, the overall look strikes me as being incredibly similar to the original Stan Winston design from the first Predator; a look that was needlessly modified for the abysmal Alien vs. Predator films.

This is the first time the effects company KNB FX has worked on a Predator movie and from what we’ve seen so far I really think they knocked it out of the park. I remain cautiously optimistic about the rest of the film, but if nothing else, it truly seems like everyone’s ...
