NBC is once again heading to the 1960s for a proposed television series – proving the old adage: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. This time, however, the network will be mining proven material in the form of Jacqueline Susann’s novel Valley of the Dolls – while bringing with it Lee Daniels, the Academy Award-nominated director of Precious.

Susann’s story is a familiar one – as this series will mark the fourth time it has been adapted since the novel’s initial publication. The book chronicles twenty years in the lives of Anne Wells, Jennifer North and Neely O’Hara, as they navigate the world finding the highs and lows of their personal and professional lives, which – due to an eventual shared addiction to the sleeping pills from which ...

Click to continue reading ‘Precious’ Director Bringing ‘Valley of the Dolls’ To TV

The Oscars were just last night and it was a solid enough show with many improvements from previous years. One of the big changes was the expansion of the Best Picture category from 5 nominees to 10, which at first I didn’t like although it actually worked well in the end.

The posters for the 10 Best Picture Nominees do what every movie poster does – sell the movie. But what if they were a bit more honest in their advertising?

Today for our SR pick we’ve turned the snark level up to 11 (on a 10-point scale) and selected a few of the funniest posters from a collection the guys over at College Humor created, which are dedicated to being entirely brutal and honest about what those Best Picture Nominees are really about.

Tomorrow morning, Tuesday February 2nd, the official nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards will be announced live. The 2010 Oscar presentation will take place Sunday, March 7, 2010, hosted by none other than the comedic pair of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

This past weekend the race for 2010 Oscar got just a bit more debatable, with some surprise winners walking away from both the Producers Guild Awards (PGA) and the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG).

James Cameron walked away happy from The 2010 Golden Globe Awards, with Avatar taking the top trophies for Best Director and Best Dramatic Picture, leading everybody to think that the Oscars would follow suit. With the Best Picture category now open to ten nominees, variety and uncertainty were suppossed to be this year’s theme.

However, in the months leading up to the biggest award in Hollywood, only a handful of films seem to be popping up as the top contenders.

The names we keep hearing again and again are as follows (listed by name with the director in parenthesis).

Avatar (James Cameron)

The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow)

I’m sure if you’re at all interested in which movies win what at each of the big award ceremonies, you caught the 67 Annual Golden Globe Awards last night on NBC. It was a fun show (as the Globes usually are compared to the Oscars), with some predictable/expected winners and some pretty major shocks.

Rickey Gervais was an absolute hoot as the host, jabbing in and out with often controversial but almost always funny gags which ranged from a Mel Gibson drinking joke (“I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”) to one about Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler (“It’s Rachel from Friends and that bloke out of 300.”). Great stuff from a great host choice.

With the award season in full swing, we at Screen Rant figured that maybe we should be covering these prestigious events because who knows, Mariah Carey could get up and say something crazy at one of these things OR Mariah Carey could get up and say something crazy at two of these things.

In case of such events, the general consensus is that we need someone around to provide hilarious, informative and cute/endearing commentary as well as someone that you, the reader, can yell at when you don’t agree with something we say.

Today we have something a little special for you Screen Rant readers – a roundtable discussion with some of the best directors in the business, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter. The roundtable features (ready for this?) James Cameron (Avatar), Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds), Peter Jackson (The Lovely Bones), Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) and Lee Daniels (Precious). All at the same table!

The discussion is broken into three videos; we’ve posted one here and you can head over to THR if you want to watch the rest (and why wouldn’t you?). The one we’ve chosen is Cameron, Jackson and Co. talking about what they feel is the toughest scene to shoot as a director. Answers range from the big cinematic stuff to the up-close-and-personal scenes. It’s pretty damn ...

Click to continue reading Director’s Roundtable: Cameron, Tarantino, Jackson & More!

Happy Friday everyone!

We missed last week due to the launch of our sister site, GameRant.com and the fact that there was quite a few less one-sheets than normal so instead, I’ve combined them all from the last two weeks into this edition of Poster Friday.

Screen Rant’s wall this week now includes new one-sheets for Avatar, Precious, Crazy on the Outside, Daybreakers, Lost, Salt, Alice in Wonderland, Crazy Heart, Kick-Ass, The Yellow Handkerchief, Caprica, All About Evil, The Wolfman, Ong Bak 3, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, From Paris with Love and Wonderful World.

In addition to that we have some neat stylistic posters for some popular television shows.

Let’s get ...

Click to continue reading Poster Friday: Avatar, Kick-Ass, Lost, Salt & More!

The madness continues at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.

The talk of the festival right now is the performance of Oscar-winner Robert Duvall in his new film, Get Low, in which he portrays a hermit with a dark secret who comes out of hiding to confront the rumors about him in a small southern town in the 30s. Directed by Aaron Schneider, the film is very much like a Horton Foote story, with those flawed yet all-too-human characters standing front and center.

Duvall, who adored Foote, loved the role and gives one of the best performances of his career. In fact if you recall, it was in 1997 that the veteran actor was poised for similar acclaim with The Apostle, which knocked critics and the film world on their collective butts. Duvall went on to earn an ...

Click to continue reading TIFF 2009 Must See Films: ‘Get Low’, ‘Precious’ & ‘The Road’
