DJ Caruso Confirms He’s Directing ‘Preacher’

Following the development of Preacher is a painstakingly frustrating experience. Nearly two and a half years ago, I reported that the Preacher adaptation was was in the works… again (this is after a decade of delays, mind you). At the time, Columbia Pictures picked up the film rights to the Vertigo comic series and attached Sam Mendes to direct.

Since then, writer John August finished a draft of the script, Sam Mendes left the project, August was rumored to possibly direct, Joe Carnahan (The A-Team) expressed interest in the project and most recently, DJ Caruso was rumored to helm the project. Now we can at least confirm that Preacher has a director again but does this mean the project is moving forward?

The acclaimed DC/Vertigo comic book series Preacher has suffered a long and formidable journey to the big screen. Since the late ’90s, various studios and filmmakers have tried in vain to adapt the controversial source material and as a result the project has endured some unique permutations.

Budgetary concerns ultimately killed the first attempt at a Preacher movie, which would have featured James Marsden in the lead role of Jesse Custer and a script by co-creator Garth Ennis. The property was next conceived as an HBO series with Mark Steven Johnson (Ghost Rider) handling writing duties. A-Team Director Wants ‘Preacher’ Movie

When it comes to characters bursting out of comic book pages and exploding on the big screen, much of the recent focus has been confined to the big guns of the Marvel and DC universes. However, director Joe Carnahan hasn’t forgotten about the lesser-known comic book heroes out there.

In fact, Carnahan has his eye on Reverend Jesse Custer, the star of Vertigo’s Preacher series, which was created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, and ran for 75 issues from 1995 to 2000.

Out promoting his latest movie, The A-Team, Carnahan has confessed to Superhero Hype that he would love to get his hands on Preacher, a project long-slated for cinematic adaptation, perpetually held up by one setback after another.

‘Preacher’ Searching For Director

Those of us who’ve read Preacher have been waiting a long time to see it brought to life in a live-action adaptation. While things were so close with director Sam Mendes helming the project and the first draft of the script submitted last summer, we weren’t close enough.

Collider had the chance to talk to Producer Neal Moritz last week and in their discussions they talked about one comic book adaptation of particular interest to me and on that’s been in development hell for a decade. Read on to see the current status and plans for the Preacher movie.

Preacher Movie Updates

Perfect timing! I finally finished reading the entire Preacher series last week after having been stuck at the two-thirds mark for months and here we have an update from the director of the film adaptation giving an update on the status of the film.

It sounds like the project is almost there – it’s so close, I can feel it. Preacher has been in development hell for a very long time (a decade now) and you can read my previous posts on the history of Preacher to find out how it was supposed to come at us in the form of an HBO series, which it would do for perfectly during these times.

Does Sam Mendes’ New Film Deal Mean ‘Preacher’ Delay?

American Beauty director Sam Mendes, along with company partners Pippa Harris and Caro Newling, recently signed a two-year first-look deal with Focus Features. The deal with Focus (who were the distributors on Mendes’ recent flick Away We Go) includes the acquisition of two projects that could end up being directed by Mendes. But what’s most interesting is the lack of a mention of the graphic novel adaptation Preacher, which Mendes has already been signed on to direct.

One of the projects included in the Mendes/Focus deal is Butcher’s Crossing, which will be co-produced by Mendes and his Neal Street Productions partners Harris and Newling. It is described as, “an epic adventure based on the 1960 revisionist Western novel by John Williams.” The other project is called Middlemarch, which is to be adapted from a George Eliot novel ...

The last we heard about the Preacher film project was from last October when Sam Mendes (American Beauty) was signed on to direct the project. At the time, it seemed we may actually be getting some forward movement on the movie but we’ve not heard anything since… until now with this little interview.

Preacher is based on the successful mid-nineties Vertigo comic series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and it was set to start development on becoming a feature film back in 1998. After years of not getting it done, it was later set to become an HBO series in 2006 which of course fell through after some management changes led to a desire to avoid the controversial content. John August To Write Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’

It’s been confirmed that John August (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish) is going to write the screenplay for the upcoming Tim Burton produced Frankenweenie. The film is based on Burton’s 1984 live-action short film that he made while he was a film school student.

Surprisingly, this version will not be live-action but done in the Burton-favored style of stop-motion animation AND will be filmed in 3D. But what’s most surprising is that it will be in black and white, like the original.

A modern black and white, stop-motion, 3D film? Sounds interesting. In case you haven’t heard of Frankenweenie before, the basic plot is the story of a man who brings his dog back to life after it is killed by a car.

Preacher Movie In The Works… Again

Columbia Pictures has acquired the rights to Vertigo’s popular and highly-acclaimed comic series Preacher and has attached Sam Mendes to direct the film adaptation.

Sam Mendes, who won an Oscar for directing American Beauty, will not be the first director who has been signed to direct this project. Before being picked up by Columbia, Preacher has sat in development-limbo for nearly a decade.

The comic series, which was published from 1995-2000, was created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. The film rights of the series were originally sold back in 1998 to Electric Entertainment with Rachel Talalay directing a script written by Ennis. After suffering through investor issues due to the controversial religious content, Ennis approached Kevin Smith and company to help finance and produce the film.
