Johnny Depp is still not officially committed to starring in Pirates of the Caribbean 5, franchise screenwriter Terry Rossi is working without his usual writing partner (Ted Elliott) on the film’s script, and it looks like Disney has failed to convince a high-profile filmmaker like Tim Burton, Sam Raimi, or Alfonso Cuarón to direct the movie.

Does that mean we might not get to see Depp as Jack Sparrow on the big screen a fifth time? Of course not. It just means that a followup to the hit fourth entry in the Pirates series, On Stranger Tides, is slowly making its way down the production pipeline and probably won’t be released until, say, Summer 2014 – which is just as well, since Depp already has a big-budget extravaganza scheduled for Summer 2013 (ie. Lone Ranger).

The Shia LaBeouf starring/CGI-fest dipped in the region of 54% from last weekend – a decent hold from its debut.
Transformers 3 blows away the competition, while Hanks and Roberts fail to capture the box office Crowne; Thomas Jane is howling mad that he didn’t get to star in Headshot but he does get to capture The Lycan; just like we predicted – Stiller and Vaughn take on Neighborhood Watch; Drew Barrymore lives in a Heist Society and Beyonce was born a Star - but was Leonardo DiCaprio?

It’s July 4th weekend and that means it’s a bonanza at the box office. The weekend saw director Michael Bay reunite with star Shia LaBeouf (but not Megan Fox, who has been replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as the non-CGI eye candy) for the third film in the mega successful franchise which is based on the Hasbro toys of yesteryear- (read Transformers: Dark of the Moon review). The pricey 3D pic scored an estimated $97 million over the three days.
Box Office

It’s not easy being green and for Warner Bros, it’s not easy starting a new superhero franchise. Sure, they successfully rebooted the Batman series, and they’ve got a new Superman film off the ground, but in recent years the studio has struggled to get films like The Flash and Justice League out of development hell – not to mention the recent Wonder Woman TV debacle.
The box office is super as Super 8 charts at number one; be prepared to be afraid of Lions, Tigers and Bears; love is in the air as Kodi Smit-McPhee joins Hailee Steinfeld in Romeo and Juliet; S. Victor Whitmill faces-off with Warner Bros. over Ed Helms’ Hangover 2 tattoo; Ed Zwick has Consent to Kill an American Assassin; Zemeckis and Washington take Flight; Warren Beatty is calling Dick Tracy 2 and has Fast Five’s Sung Kang fired a Headshot at Thomas Jane? The majority of critics seem to agree that from a creative standpoint, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has turned into a sinking ship. Nevertheless, the series remains an unrivaled cash cow for Walt Disney Pictures and they’re understandably anxious to see it carry on. In fact, they had a script for a fifth film in their hands before On Stranger Tides was even released.

The domestic box office gross for the latest entry might be lower than that of its predecessors, but the studio has little reason to worry that audiences are starting to grow impervious to the charms of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). To date, On Stranger Tides has amassed more than $472 million outside of the U.S. and is on track to earn ...

Click to continue reading Disney’s Wish List of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5′ Directors

This week:

Moviegoers walk the plank as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sails to the top of the box office; Mel Gibson uses Sleight Of Hand for a career comeback; Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell and Alec Baldwin play Turkey Bowl; Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton take a bite out of Byzantium; Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz pose for Gambit and Robert De Niro is The Wizard of Lies.

Box Office

The fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise – On Stranger Tides debuted this weekend to an impressive, but not spectacular $90.1 million. This is down from the $114 million start of its predecessor At World’s End and the mighty $135 million opening of Dead Man’s Chest. The number is also well below studio expectations in aiming for a $100 million-plus opening.

Reviews have been mixed (read ours here) but with strong international grosses ($256 million ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: May 22, 2011

When Sam Claflin got a call from his agent saying that he had an audition for the new Pirates of the Caribbean film, his initial response was “What’s the point? It’s never going to happen, it’s impossible.” The actor was both shocked and deeply gratified when he in fact found himself flying to Los Angeles to meet director Rob Marshall and producer Jerry Bruckheimer just two days later. Claflin ultimately won the role of Philip, the missionary who falls for a mermaid, in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Philip and his counterpart, the mermaid Syrena (Astrid Beges-Frisbey), serve (in some ways) to establish the b-love-storyline that Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann provided in the first film. They also propel the plot forward, and co-create what is one of the ...

Click to continue reading Interview: Sam Claflin On ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’

Eight years ago, the news that Disney planned to release a film based on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride was met with shocked skepticism from a public that could see no way that such a film would lead to anything other than embarrassment and box office disaster.

So when Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was released, audiences received one of the most welcome surprises of the decade. Pirates had a genuine sense of charm and adventure that is rarely seem in film today and introduced the world to what has become one of cinemas most beloved characters, Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Terry Rossio has completed his screenplay for a fifth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie - but franchise star Johnny Depp isn't ready to push ahead with another 'Pirates' film just yet.

Walt Disney Pictures certainly understands the value of striking while the iron is hot; the fourth installment in its swashbuckling ride-turned-blockbuster series, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, is a surefire smash (when it hits theaters in two weeks) so work on Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is already well underway.

Screenwriter Terry Rossio (working without his usual Pirates co-writer, Ted Elliot) has handed in his first draft of the script for a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean flick – however, the key ingredient to the Pirates formula (Johnny Depp) isn’t ready to push ahead with the next chapter just yet.

The early response to On Stranger Tides‘ standalone narrative structure has been positive enough to convince producer Jerry Bruckheimer that all future Pirates pics should follow suit.
We’re about two and a half weeks away from the launch of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which promises to return the swashbuckling blockbuster franchise to its roots – namely the wacky antics and adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) – instead of getting lost in convoluted subplots.

The summer movie season is upon us yet again, and despite the somewhat lackluster theater going experiences of the last few years (with some notable exceptions, of course) 2011 promises to kick off a bright and promising future for fans of the superhero and sci-fi genres in particular.

Flicks like Thor, X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern and Captain America will keep our weekends full of excitement as we try to determine of the winner of this summer’s Superhero showdown. However, even with that whirlwind competition going on, the summer’s greatest event may in fact be the culmination of a decade-long cinematic journey with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. If you haven’t seen the first trailer for that film yet… prepare to get goosebumps.
Remember a time when Pirates of the Caribbean referred solely to a New Orleans Square attraction at Disney’s theme parks? Jump forward to 2011, which will see the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – a fourth movie based off the ride – and chances are good it won’t be the last installment in the franchise.

A new featurette for Pirates of the Caribbean 4 has been released, and it very briefly summarizes the history and evolution of the Pirates concept – going so far as to include archived footage of Walt Disney showing off miniatures that provided the blueprint for the original ride.

Walt Disney Pictures recognized early on that they had a lucrative franchise opportunity with Pirates of the Caribbean. After the success of the original film, it was determined that the second and third installments would be shot back-to-back for logistical reasons.

Screenwriters Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio realized they had a choice to make regarding which direction to steer the sequels in – should they craft standalone adventures, or retroactively turn The Curse of the Black Pearl into the first chapter in a trilogy?

Since the studio was enthusiastic about having the majority of the ensemble cast return, Elliot & Rossio felt that it would be easier to create an interconnected mythology based on elements from the original Pirates of the Caribbean rather than branch the sequels off into uncharted waters.
In less than two months, Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow sets sail on his latest big screen adventure, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The fourth film in the swashbuckling blockbuster franchise aims to kick off another trilogy, but is structured as a standalone feature that focuses primarily on Sparrow’s quest to locate the legendary Fountain of Youth.

A second theatrical trailer for the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean flick has been released online, and it focuses on the conflict at the heart of the film: the three-way race between Sparrow, his old frenemy Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), and the cruel Blackbeard (Ian McShane) to reach the Fountain first.

Johnny Depp’s one-of-a-kind trickster Jack Sparrow kindly offered everyone the chance to join him on his hair-brained quest to find the Fountain of Youth in the original teaser trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

That silver-tongued scoundrel Sparrow reiterates his offer in the first featurette for this summer’s fourth Pirates of the Caribbean, which exchanges villainous fish-men and squid-bearded Davy Jones for zombie scallywags, mysterious mermaids, and the pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane).

On Stranger Tides finds Sparrow being thwarted in his attempt to locate the legendary Fountain by a now respectable Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a former flame of Sparrow’s named Angelica (Penelope Cruz), and her old man – the vicious Captain Edward Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard. As the official Pirates of the Caribbean 4 trailer demonstrates, ...

Click to continue reading ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 4′ Featurette: Captain Jack Is Back

Where else can you find sneaky scallywags, one-legged buccaneers, and Kermit the Frog – other than by watching Muppet Treasure Island, that is? The answer is today’s collection of promo photos from this summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and November’s The Muppets.

Walt Disney Pictures is the financial body behind both of these anticipated pics, which look to deliver plenty of steel-clashing duels, explosions upon the high sea, humorous one-liners, and spontaneous song & dance numbers. We leave it to you to deduct which movie will offer what.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hits theaters first and will unleash Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow – now on an expedition to locate the Fountain of Youth – in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D as well. Director Rob Marshall’s high-seas adventure looks quite epic in scale and ...

Click to continue reading New ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 4′ and ‘The Muppets’ Images

'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise screenwriter Terry Rossio has officially signed on to pen a fifth installment, which director Rob Marshall may return for as well.

Eternal life awaits those intrepid venturers who reach the Fountain of Youth – or, rather, those that headline a $1 billion + grossing ride-turned blockbuster franchise. Walt Disney Pictures certainly wants to keep one of its most popular cash-cows alive, which is why Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is already being prepped.

Disney has officially closed a deal with screenwriter Terry Rossio to pen a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean adventure, which is virtually guaranteed to see Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow… again.

Rossio has worked in collaboration with Ted Elliott on the script for the previous four POTC flicks, but he is either going solo on the fifth or merely beat Elliott to the punch with respect to signing on for another installment in the swashbuckling series. Deadline also says that POTC: ...

Click to continue reading Terry Rossio Will Script ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5′

Gorgeous merfolk, magical fountains, malicious pirates, overweight kings – it’s all in a day’s work for Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow, who will return to theaters once more in next summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Contest winners that attended the “Pirates Fans First!” party got to check out all the swashbuckling action in the first theatrical trailer for Disney’s fourth Pirates of the Caribbean on the big screen in all its 3D glory – and now that teaser is online for everyone else to see as well.

Franchise writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio went the Thoreau route (“Simplify, simplify”) and crafted their screenplay for On Stranger Tides as a stand-alone venture featuring Captain Jack, much like the first entry in the series, The Curse of the Black Pearl.
