It’s been a while since we’ve seen a large helping of new releases on DVD and Blu-ray. This week there are seven worthy titles and three solid re-release Blu-ray picks.

There’s only one big budget blockbuster this week, but you may be interested in the smaller titles. Running on low profiles, they won the hearts of niche audiences and critics alike. Be sure to check out Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, Page One: Inside the New York Times and A Better Life for smaller productions.

With plenty of talk about a potential Crow remake, the original makes it mark again by reaching Blu-ray this week. A film that has been referenced in many films since, but never remade, is Cape Fear. That reaches Blu-ray as well this week.

Now that the 2011 Summer movie season is behind us, here's our look back at what we think were the best and most disappointing movies this year - along with a couple of very unexpected surprises.

Forget about checking your calendar – when you read that Shark Night 3D is one of the big releases of the weekend, you know the Summer Movie Season is officially coming to an end.

Overall, 2011 was a decent year as far as summer releases go. There were a handful of surprises (and more than a couple of disappointments) but most movies were good enough to ensure that people walked away entertained and with their expectations met – as opposed to, say, protesting in the streets and demanding a ticket refund.

Quibbles about whether Fast Five or Thor truly marked the start of Summer 2011 aside, the season started off with a bang at the box office – and eventually fizzled out in the end. So, here are the big questions: What were ...

Click to continue reading Summer 2011 Movies: The Best, The Worst, & Some Surprises

Transformers 3 blows away the competition, while Hanks and Roberts fail to capture the box office Crowne; Thomas Jane is howling mad that he didn’t get to star in Headshot but he does get to capture The Lycan; just like we predicted – Stiller and Vaughn take on Neighborhood Watch; Drew Barrymore lives in a Heist Society and Beyonce was born a Star - but was Leonardo DiCaprio?

It’s July 4th weekend and that means it’s a bonanza at the box office. The weekend saw director Michael Bay reunite with star Shia LaBeouf (but not Megan Fox, who has been replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as the non-CGI eye candy) for the third film in the mega successful franchise which is based on the Hasbro toys of yesteryear- (read Transformers: Dark of the Moon review).
Cars 2 hits first gear and takes the top spot at the box office, while Bad Teacher has a good start; Warren Beatty is Howard Hughes; Charlie Day joins del Toro’s Pacific Rim; Geoff Johns talks a Green Lantern franchise (hey - don’t laugh) and will The Kings of Leon serenade James Bond?

Box Office

This weekend Disney Pixar’s Cars 2 took pole position at the box office, zooming ahead of the nearest competition in the form of Bad Teacher. The CGI car pic raced up an estimated $68 million to cross the finish line ahead of the original Cars’ $60 million debut. The film has received mixed reviews (read ours here) but it should be very profitable by the time it ends its run, especially once merchandising is factored in.

Box Office

It’s not easy being green and for Warner Bros, it’s not easy starting a new superhero franchise. Sure, they successfully rebooted the Batman series, and they’ve got a new Superman film off the ground, but in recent years the studio has struggled to get films like The Flash and Justice League out of development hell – not to mention the recent Wonder Woman TV debacle. Meanwhile, Marvel characters have been flourishing on the big screen, with X-Men, Thor and Captain America all kicking butt this summer. ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: June 19th, 2011

The fourth instalment of the X-Men franchise – X-Men: First Class topped the box office over the weekend. However, depending on your point of view you could say that it’s the fifth in the series, if you count last year’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine or you could call it the first in a new series since it’s a prequel/reboot (preboot?) of Bryan Singer’s 2000 film.

This week:

Moviegoers walk the plank as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sails to the top of the box office; Mel Gibson uses Sleight Of Hand for a career comeback; Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell and Alec Baldwin play Turkey Bowl; Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton take a bite out of Byzantium; Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz pose for Gambit and Robert De Niro is The Wizard of Lies.

Box Office

The fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise – On Stranger Tides debuted this weekend to an impressive, but not spectacular $90.1 million. This is down from the $114 million start of its predecessor At World’s End and the mighty $135 million opening of Dead Man’s Chest. The number is also well below studio expectations in aiming for a $100 million-plus opening.

When Jerry Bruckheimer, Rob Marshall, Johnny Depp and the Pirates of the Caribbean crew began to think about the two actors that would portray the young lovers in the latest installation of the Pirates franchise (in lieu of Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann) the search went global. To fill the role of Philip (the minister set adrift in a sea of bloodthirsty pirates) the team tapped twenty-four year old British actor Sam Claflin, fresh out of theatrical training – as well as a few smaller films and television series. (You can read our interview with Claflin HERE).

To portray Philip’s love-interest, the stunningly beautiful and absolutely deadly mermaid Syrena, the production found Spanish-French actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey.
Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick reviews Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Rob Marshall’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides may be one of the most highly anticipated films of the summer – set to reinvigorate Disney’s theme park ride-turned movie franchise. Despite racking up nearly $2 billion in combined box office revenues worldwide, the last two installments in the original trilogy failed to capture the same magic as the first film. Sure they were epic in scale and tied-into historical pirate lore but each subsequent film grew increasingly convoluted as love triangles, multi-film betrayals, and one of the least satisfying act two cliffhangers in film history, muddled what was originally a carefree summer surprise.

When Sam Claflin got a call from his agent saying that he had an audition for the new Pirates of the Caribbean film, his initial response was “What’s the point? It’s never going to happen, it’s impossible.” The actor was both shocked and deeply gratified when he in fact found himself flying to Los Angeles to meet director Rob Marshall and producer Jerry Bruckheimer just two days later. Claflin ultimately won the role of Philip, the missionary who falls for a mermaid, in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Philip and his counterpart, the mermaid Syrena (Astrid Beges-Frisbey), serve (in some ways) to establish the b-love-storyline that Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann provided in the first film. They also propel the plot forward, and co-create what is one of the ...

Click to continue reading Interview: Sam Claflin On ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’

Eight years ago, the news that Disney planned to release a film based on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride was met with shocked skepticism from a public that could see no way that such a film would lead to anything other than embarrassment and box office disaster.

So when Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was released, audiences received one of the most welcome surprises of the decade. Pirates had a genuine sense of charm and adventure that is rarely seem in film today and introduced the world to what has become one of cinemas most beloved characters, Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Actor Geoffrey Rush has had quite a year. He was nominated for an Academy Award and won a BAFTA for his portrayal of Lionel Logue, the gifted and unorthodox speech therapist to King George VI in The King’s Speech; he brought the Nikolai Gogol play Diary of a Madman from Sydney to New York’s prestigious Brooklyn Academy of Music, and he is starring in two of this summer’s most anticipated films.

We had the opportunity to interview Rush at the Los Angeles press day for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, one of the two aforementioned anxiously awaited summer blockbuster hopefuls.
Terry Rossio has completed his screenplay for a fifth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie - but franchise star Johnny Depp isn't ready to push ahead with another 'Pirates' film just yet.

Walt Disney Pictures certainly understands the value of striking while the iron is hot; the fourth installment in its swashbuckling ride-turned-blockbuster series, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, is a surefire smash (when it hits theaters in two weeks) so work on Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is already well underway.

Screenwriter Terry Rossio (working without his usual Pirates co-writer, Ted Elliot) has handed in his first draft of the script for a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean flick – however, the key ingredient to the Pirates formula (Johnny Depp) isn’t ready to push ahead with the next chapter just yet.

The early response to On Stranger Tides‘ standalone narrative structure has been positive enough to convince producer Jerry Bruckheimer that all future Pirates pics should follow suit.
We’re about two and a half weeks away from the launch of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which promises to return the swashbuckling blockbuster franchise to its roots – namely the wacky antics and adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) – instead of getting lost in convoluted subplots.

The first clip released from On Stranger Tides does just that, focusing on Depp’s Sparrow as he behaves like the human equivalent of Bugs Bunny, wreaking havoc (and dropping sly quips) on any figure or body of authority around him.

Disney’s fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie picks up where the third film, At World’s End, left off – with Sparrow, having been confronted with his own mortality and the changing world around him, setting off to locate the legendary Fountain ...

Click to continue reading First ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 4′ Clip: Captain Jack Runs Amok

'Tis the season again movie fans - and we've got your guide to the all the films that will be keeping you out of the sunshine and packed in a cool theater throughout the summer of 2011.

The summer movie season is upon us yet again, and despite the somewhat lackluster theater going experiences of the last few years (with some notable exceptions, of course) 2011 promises to kick off a bright and promising future for fans of the superhero and sci-fi genres in particular.

Flicks like Thor, X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern and Captain America will keep our weekends full of excitement as we try to determine of the winner of this summer’s Superhero showdown. However, even with that whirlwind competition going on, the summer’s greatest event may in fact be the culmination of a decade-long cinematic journey with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. If you haven’t seen the first trailer for that film yet… prepare to get goosebumps. Sci-fi fans will be kept ...

Click to continue reading Screen Rant’s 2011 Summer Movie Preview

As we prepare for the summer movie season, we've put together a fresh new trailer mashup. Get ready for Screen Rant's 'Ultimate 2011 Summer Movie Trailer.'

The buzz surrounding comic book superhero movies has never been greater as the summer of 2011 approaches. With four comic book movies releasing this summer and a large slate of other potential blockbusters, this slow year may explode with huge hits in the coming months.

To get you true fans pumped for another summer at the movies, we’ve put together a trailer mashup showcasing the best of what’s to come.

There are a few potential duds on the schedule this summer, but there are even more tentpoles from major studios; our mashup includes four superhero films and seven sequels. The major studio battle for summer supremacy seems to be between Paramount (Thor, Captain America) and Warner Bros. (Green Lantern, Harry Potter).

Hopefully this trailer gets you in the mood for ...

Click to continue reading The Ultimate 2011 Summer Movie Trailer
