DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: October 18th, 2011

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a large helping of new releases on DVD and Blu-ray. This week there are seven worthy titles and three solid re-release Blu-ray picks.

There’s only one big budget blockbuster this week, but you may be interested in the smaller titles. Running on low profiles, they won the hearts of niche audiences and critics alike. Be sure to check out Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, Page One: Inside the New York Times and A Better Life for smaller productions.

With plenty of talk about a potential Crow remake, the original makes it mark again by reaching Blu-ray this week. A film that has been referenced in many films since, but never remade, is Cape Fear. That reaches Blu-ray as well this week.

Summer 2011 Movies: The Best, The Worst, & Some Surprises

Forget about checking your calendar – when you read that Shark Night 3D is one of the big releases of the weekend, you know the Summer Movie Season is officially coming to an end.

Overall, 2011 was a decent year as far as summer releases go. There were a handful of surprises (and more than a couple of disappointments) but most movies were good enough to ensure that people walked away entertained and with their expectations met – as opposed to, say, protesting in the streets and demanding a ticket refund.

Quibbles about whether Fast Five or Thor truly marked the start of Summer 2011 aside, the season started off with a bang at the box office – and eventually fizzled out in the end. So, here are the big questions: What were ...

Transformers 3 blows away the competition, while Hanks and Roberts fail to capture the box office Crowne; Thomas Jane is howling mad that he didn’t get to star in Headshot but he does get to capture The Lycan; just like we predicted – Stiller and Vaughn take on Neighborhood Watch; Drew Barrymore lives in a Heist Society and Beyonce was born a Star - but was Leonardo DiCaprio?

It’s July 4th weekend and that means it’s a bonanza at the box office. The weekend saw director Michael Bay reunite with star Shia LaBeouf (but not Megan Fox, who has been replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as the non-CGI eye candy) for the third film in the mega successful franchise which is based on the Hasbro toys of yesteryear- (read Transformers: Dark of the Moon review). Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: June 26th, 2011

This week:

Cars 2 hits first gear and takes the top spot at the box office, while Bad Teacher has a good start; Warren Beatty is Howard Hughes; Charlie Day joins del Toro’s Pacific Rim; Geoff Johns talks a Green Lantern franchise (hey - don’t laugh) and will The Kings of Leon serenade James Bond?

Box Office

This weekend Disney Pixar’s Cars 2 took pole position at the box office, zooming ahead of the nearest competition in the form of Bad Teacher. The CGI car pic raced up an estimated $68 million to cross the finish line ahead of the original Cars’ $60 million debut. The film has received mixed reviews (read ours here) but it should be very profitable by the time it ends its run, especially once merchandising is factored in.

Moviegoers walk the plank as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sails to the top of the box office; Mel Gibson uses Sleight Of Hand for a career comeback; Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell and Alec Baldwin play Turkey Bowl; Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton take a bite out of Byzantium; Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz pose for Gambit and Robert De Niro is The Wizard of Lies.

The fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise – On Stranger Tides debuted this weekend to an impressive, but not spectacular $90.1 million. This is down from the $114 million start of its predecessor At World’s End and the mighty $135 million opening of Dead Man’s Chest. The number is also well below studio expectations in aiming for a $100 million-plus opening.

When Jerry Bruckheimer, Rob Marshall, Johnny Depp and the Pirates of the Caribbean crew began to think about the two actors that would portray the young lovers in the latest installation of the Pirates franchise (in lieu of Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann) the search went global. To fill the role of Philip (the minister set adrift in a sea of bloodthirsty pirates) the team tapped twenty-four year old British actor Sam Claflin, fresh out of theatrical training – as well as a few smaller films and television series. When Sam Claflin got a call from his agent saying that he had an audition for the new Pirates of the Caribbean film, his initial response was “What’s the point? It’s never going to happen, it’s impossible.” The actor was both shocked and deeply gratified when he in fact found himself flying to Los Angeles to meet director Rob Marshall and producer Jerry Bruckheimer just two days later. Walt Disney Pictures certainly understands the value of striking while the iron is hot; the fourth installment in its swashbuckling ride-turned-blockbuster series, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, is a surefire smash (when it hits theaters in two weeks) so work on Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is already well underway.

Screenwriter Terry Rossio (working without his usual Pirates co-writer, Ted Elliot) has handed in his first draft of the script for a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean flick – however, the key ingredient to the Pirates formula (Johnny Depp) isn’t ready to push ahead with the next chapter just yet.

We’re about two and a half weeks away from the launch of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which promises to return the swashbuckling blockbuster franchise to its roots – namely the wacky antics and adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) – instead of getting lost in convoluted subplots.

The first clip released from On Stranger Tides does just that, focusing on Depp’s Sparrow as he behaves like the human equivalent of Bugs Bunny, wreaking havoc (and dropping sly quips) on any figure or body of authority around him.

The buzz surrounding comic book superhero movies has never been greater as the summer of 2011 approaches. With four comic book movies releasing this summer and a large slate of other potential blockbusters, this slow year may explode with huge hits in the coming months.

To get you true fans pumped for another summer at the movies, we’ve put together a trailer mashup showcasing the best of what’s to come.

There are a few potential duds on the schedule this summer, but there are even more tentpoles from major studios; our mashup includes four superhero films and seven sequels.
