Guillermo del Toro to Co-Direct 3D Stop-Motion ‘Pinocchio’ Flick

Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy series director Guillermo del Toro has been working (in some capacity) on the Jim Henson Company’s 3D stop-motion retelling of Pinocchio since 2008.

Back in February 2011, it was announced he would produce the film – which is based on a darker treatment of Carlo Collodi’s partly-serialized 19th century novel “The Adventures of Pinocchio” – that del Toro co-wrote, in collaboration with Gris Grimly (the short “Cannibal Flesh Riot”) and Matthew Robbins. The latter also co-penned del Toro’s Mimic and collaborated with the filmmaker on the script for the Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark remake.

Reports are in that del Toro has decided to just go whole-hog on Pinocchio (fully titled… well, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) and co-direct the picture, alongside Fantastic Mr. Fox animation director Mark Gustafson. Special effects will be ...

Tim Burton & Robert Downey Jr. Eye ‘Pinocchio’

It seems there are now multiple new Hollywood studio-backed versions of nearly every famous fairy tale either being actively developed or on the verge of hitting theaters (see: this year’s Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman).

Case in point: Italian author Carlo Collodi’s famous “children’s story,” Pinocchio, which is the basis for a new 3D stop-motion flick from the Jim Henson Company and Guillermo del Toro, and a prequel titled The Three Misfortunes of Gepetto from 20th Century Fox – and a live-action project at Warner Bros. that is based on a screenplay by Bryan Fuller (the creator of Pushing Daisies).

Shawn Levy Attached To Helm ‘Pinocchio’ Prequel

Reports are in that Shawn Levy is now attached to direct yet another upcoming noteworthy studio production – alongside 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Voyage remake, a new version of Frankenstein, an amorphous action-adventure with Hugh Jackman, and (possibly) a sequel to the currently-playing Real Steel.

Now it seems that Levy is up to call the shots on The Three Misfortunes of Geppetto, a fairy tale-inspired project that will not be a re-imaginging of its inspiration (re: Pinocchio) – rather, it will be a prequel to that story.

Fox has officially acquired the Three Misfortunes of Geppetto spec script by playwright/screenwriter Michael Vukadinovich and attached Levy as director. Guillermo del Toro Working On Darker Version Of ‘Pinocchio’

One of the items that’s been on filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s overflowing “to do” list for a while now is a new version of the classic fairy tale, Pinocchio. He became attached to produce the pic back in 2008, and now it looks to at last be getting underway.

Being del Toro, he’s designing this new take on Pinocchio as a much more twisted and nightmare-inducing version of the fairy tale – one that frankly was still kind of disturbing, even after it was “Disney-fied” into a traditionally-animated musical back in 1940.

Deadline says that del Toro is collaborating with the Jim Henson Company, film composer and rock musician Nick Cave (who scripted The Crow reboot), and puppeteer facility MacKinnon and Saunders (Corpse Bride, Fantastic Mr. Fox) to turn Pinocchio into a 3D, ...

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 16, 2008

This week:

Spielberg and Eastwood visit the Hereafter; Len Wiseman drives a Motorcade; Guillermo del Toro plays with Pinocchio; George Miller has Happy Feet again and Matthew McConaughey and David O. Russell fight with The Grackle.

Box Office

James Bond captured the top spot of the US box office with an amazing $71 million. The weekend take of Quantum of Solace was higher than any previous Bond entry in the series, and it highlights Daniel Craig’s popularity in the iconic role.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa took the runner up position with another $32 million giving the animated animal film an amazing $100 million. Role Models continues to impress with another $11.5 million in the bank, High School Musical 3: Senior Year grossed another $5.5 million bringing its total to $84million. While this is far from a bad gross (considering its low budget) it must be slightly disappointing for Disney.
