DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: August 9, 2011

This week in DVD and Blu-ray is a vast improvement from last week’s dud. Plenty of sci-fi entertainment hitting shelves alongside a pair of classic comedies that make one heck of a double feature. Most of these movies did poorly at the box office, but hope for a better opportunity in the home video market.

If you like stoner comedy, this is the greatest week of all time. While Cheech and Chong may not be on the docket, you will find an opportunity to spend your money on Paul, Your Highness, Fast Times at Ridgemont High as well as Dazed and Confused. Disney has its counter-programming with the release of The Fox and the Hound and Mars Needs Moms.

Those with a desire for the niche market can also hunt for a new DVD and Blu-ray ...

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: April 3rd, 2011

This week:

Russell Brand and James Marsden Hop to the top of the box office; Time Bandits and The Long Good Friday go from Handmade to remade films; Justin Beiber and Ashton Kutcher ask What Would Kenny Do?; Antoine Fuqua dusts off the shoulder pads for Dynasty (well, sort of) ; a new writer takes a bite at Piranha 3DD and Keira Knightley makes friends with Steve Carell for The End of the World.

Box Office

Hop topped the box office after grossing an estimated $38 million this weekend. The CGI/live action hybrid featuring X-Men’s James Marsden and the voice of Russell Brand quietly surpassed studio expectations despite mediocre reviews. Personally, I’m not a fan of this genre and can’t fathom why anybody would be interested in making this, although I am fully aware that family films can make serious money at the box office – despite their (often) poor ...

The box office sees a Wimpy Kid knock out Zack Snyder with a Sucker Punch; Johnny Depp is a Thin Man; Dennis Quaid joins Gerard Butler in Playing the Field; Liv Tyler kicks The Hobbit; Robert De Niro, Forest Whitaker, and Curtis (50 Cent) Jackson are Freelancers, and more!

Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch received a… sucker punch on its release by Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. The family film should out gross Snyder’s latest fantasy flick by about $5 million. The $19 million debut of Sucker Punch is in line with Warner Bros’ (lowered) expectations. The film received mixed reviews (read ours here) and it looks like it might not connect with an audience for the long haul. Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: March 20th, 2011

This week:

This weekend’s box office is Limitless; Samuel L. Jackson is a not-so-good Samaritan; Taylor Swift will be protected by The Lorax; Tom Hanks is ready to take on A Captain’s Duty; Gore Verbinski is headed for The Brink; Sam Worthington finally gets the Drift; Sarah Jessica Parker and Marisa Tomei are Married and Cheating; and more.

Box Office

Limitless ended up being the winner at this weekend’s box office race, taking in an estimated $19 million from 2,756 theaters.

Director Neil Burger’s thought-provoking popcorn flick (read our review) exceeded early expectations and should help further cement star Bradley Cooper’s standing as a credible box office draw – when he’s not just getting up to Hangover related antics, that is.

Pretty much every negative review for Paul that I’ve read is prefaced with the same thing I’ll say here: I’m a big fan of Shaun of the Dead and I loved Hot Fuzz (I gave it 5 stars). Those films starred the dynamic duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and were directed by Edgar Wright. The director here is Greg Mottola, who directed Superbad (which I also liked). I had hoped that the Pegg, Frost, and Mottola partnership would make for a new and great comedy movie combination aimed directly at fanboy geeks like myself.

Sadly… not so much.

It’s hard to find a good friend in this world. It’s even harder to find one that’s not from this world. While many aliens depicted in films come to Earth with hostility, others arrive more peacefully. Some are lost, while others just want to be accepted. Either way, there are those aliens in TV and movies that just seem like the perfect addition to any pack of friends.

We’ve picked our ten favorite extraterrestrials and explored why they might be good friends, while also touching upon the cons of an intergalactic friendship in general. Many were considered and didn’t make the cut – like the Arquillians from Men in Black, the Iron Giant and Alf.

Earlier today we brought you our video interview with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost discussing their new sci-fi comedy Paul.

There you can read all about our adventure in the land of hilarity and mystery that is Area 51 – the location where the Paul interviews were held. Suffice it to say that it involved RV slumber parties, ice cold morning showers (in said RV), late night bonfires beneath shooting stars (or alien spacecrafts depending on your perspective), and an introduction to a surreal and beautiful town – in which a photo of the solitary school-aged child is displayed on a wall in the only restaurant/bar in town, The Little A’Le’Inn.

‘Paul’ Red Band Trailer is Raunchy Alien Fun

There’s a lot to like about the upcoming sci-fi comedy Paul. Not only does it star the excellent duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), but it comes from Greg Mottola, the director of the cult comedy Superbad.

Throw in a supporting cast that includes Kristin Wiig, Sigourney Weaver, Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman, and Seth Rogen (as the voice of the titular foul-mouthed alien) and you’ve got a geeky formula for success.

Last month, Universal released the first full-length U.S. trailer for the film, showing off the movie’s many hilarious pop culture references and general raunchiness. Today, IGN premiered an exclusive unedited trailer, focusing even more so on the movie’s raunchy humor.

It was not an easy task, narrowing down our choices to 20 and ordering them - Just look at our complete 2011 movie guide to see the options – but we’ve done it and are left with a healthy mix of comedies, sci-fi films, comic book movies and a lot of action that will bring the hoards to the movie theaters.

SR Pick [Video]: 2011 Movies – The Year of the Alien

The entertainment industry runs in cycles (we’re looking at you, vampires) and 2011 will be no different. While 3D movies run amok, a slew of alien movies will also touch down in theaters this year.

In honor of the extraterrestrial trend, we’ve put together a trailer for 2011: The Year of the Alien.

There’s no guarantee these movies will be good, but there’s also no question we will see plenty of interplanetary action. Skyline kicked off the alien trend last year with a less-than-impressive $55 million at the worldwide box office (not to mention less-than-impressive reviews). If 2011 movies are any better, we could be in for $1 billion in ticket sales (we’re looking at you, Transformers 3).

Hot Fuzz/Shaun of the Dead stars Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are trying their hands at a comedy/genre parody sans director Edgar Wright with Paul, which finds the pair playing a couple of hopelessly devoted sci-fi geeks who encounter a legitimate non-Earthling on a road trip across North America.

A full U.S. trailer has been unveiled for the film, which also stars the likes of Kristin Wiig (MacGruber), Sigourney Weaver, Jane Lynch (Glee), and Seth Rogen as the voice of the titular extraterrestrial.

Following the teaser trailer back in October, Universal Pictures has released the first full theatrical trailer as well as a new poster for Paul, the forthcoming sci-fi comedy directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad) and starring and written by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz).

The premise for Paul is a simple yet peculiar one: Two Euro buddies decide to go on an American road trip, first paying a visit to the Mecca of all things geek that is the San Diego Comic-Con, before continuing on to Area 51. Along the way, they get into a whole load of trouble after meeting a strange talking alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) who is being hunted by the government.

‘Paul’ Teaser Trailer With Simon Pegg & Nick Frost

One of the surprisingly better panel presentations at San Diego Comic-Con this summer was that of Paul, the alien adventure-comedy by Greg Mottola (Adventureland, Superbad). While the title does little to help sell the film, Paul features an all-star comedy cast which includes Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogen, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader and Jane Lynch.

Paul is a story about two comic book geeks, played by Pegg and Frost, who travel around the U.S. hitting comic conventions and as they near Area 51, they encounter an actual alien (voiced by Rogen) who needs their help. The first officially released trailer has released and you can watch it below.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are reunited in Paul, “the movie about two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage to Comic-Con ultimately takes them to America’s UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who takes them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever.”

It’s Sunday, which means that only one more Comic-Con-less weekend is left before the big-show. Much like Thursday and Friday’s schedules, there’s more than enough options to sate even the most avid movie fans.

Saturday may be the most impressive day of the entire Con with panels for Green Lantern, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Cowboys & Aliens – not to mention Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger.
