Michael Bay in Final Negotiations For ‘Transformers 4′ [Updated]

Yesterday we rehashed some old thoughts from the summer where we discussed our belief that Michael Bay could return to the Transformers franchise to direct a fourth installment. Since before Transformers: Dark of the Moon released this summer, Michael Bay and series star Shia LaBeouf adamantly claimed that this trilogy-concluding film would be the last for the both of them for the franchise.

Of course, money talks, and Michael Bay is far from denying he’ll return now. The latest reports go as far as saying Bay’s almost signed a deal with Paramount Pictures for him to return to direct Transformers 4.

Michael Bay Will (Probably) Direct Transformers 4

After directing the universally-panned Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, a sequel that suffered for being rushed and being in production just after the writer’s strike, Michael Bay was dead set on tackling a personal project of his instead of his usual big budget summer blockbuster fare.

That indie film of his would be called Pain & Gain and it’s something Bay has had his eye on for a decade. After meeting with Steven Spielberg, an executive producer on the Transformers films, Bay was persuaded to again push that film back and work on Transformers 3 next, a movie that lit up the box office this summer and introduced 3D to the series. After claiming that would be the end of his spot in the director’s chair for the series, could Bay be back again for Transformers 4? Probably.

Michael Bay’s Next Film To Be His ‘Pulp Fiction’; Bad Boys 3 Coming

Michael Bay’s most recent film – a little known independent project called Transformers: Dark of the Moon – had the biggest opening day box office all year (on a Tuesday, no less) and is well on its way to a massive opening weekend, too.

Now the question is: What’s next for Michael Bay? After six years of eating, breathing, and directing Transformers films, what’s to be the tenth entry in Bay’s burgeoning filmography? According to the man himself, it’s Pain & Gain, a dark comedy in the vein of Pulp Fiction that he originally planned to work on before returning for Transformers 3.

How To Go Bigger With Transformers 3: Unicron

You Transformers fans know what I’m talking about when you see the name “Unicron.”

That’s right. If you thought Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen was a massive convoluted mess of nonsense and wasted… well, everything, coated in a big pile of explosions and sometimes-awkward visuals, then you’ve seen nothing yet. How can you introduce and misuse even bigger characters for Transformers 3 after what happened with Devastator and many others in Revenge of the Fallen?

Well, you introduce the Death Star Transformer!

For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, Unicron was the antagonist character introduced in the 1986 animated Transformers: The Movie. He’s so big that he transforms into a mechanical planet, or as Obi-Wan Kenobi would describe, “that’s no moon.”

Bay Holds Cybertronian Meeting to Discuss Transformers 3

I was a defender of the first Transformers. While the bad parts really made watching the movie difficult the first time, upon re-watching it, I really dug a lot of it.

Unfortunately, with the sequel that I hoped would eliminate the bad parts and improve on the good… it did mostly the opposite and we got stuck with a movie that although got very bad reviews across the board, it of course banked $830 million worldwide. Wait until Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray and DVDs hit the shelves next month. Add that with the insane merchandising and there’s no other movie that can bank more in total.

So, that means Transformers 3 is a sure-fire thing no matter what, the only question is when.

What Michael Bay’s ‘Small Movie’ Is All About

On Saturday, Screen Rant reported on Michael Bay’s personal project that he’d be working on before moving on to rounding off the Transformers trilogy.

Transformers 3 was initially planned for a 2011 release, making each film in the series two years apart, but Bay wanted an extra year so he could work on what he described as a “small movie” – a project entirely different from his usual cup of exploding tea.

Bay described the proposed film as such:

“It’s good… It’s like a ‘Pulp Fiction’ type of movie… [It's based on] a true story, and it’s very funny… It’s a dark comedy.”
