2011 Razzies Shortlist: The Worst Films and Performances of 2010

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31^st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24^th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

The categories this year are pretty much the same as last year – Worst Screenplay, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actor/Actress, Worst Actor/Actress, ...

Top 5 Ways To Save Horror Movies

It’s getting pretty scary out there for horror fans.

Horror hounds have suffered for years with weak remakes, torture porn-a-paloozas and other degrading attempts to make us jump. But 2010 represents a new low for the genre.

The Nightmare on Elm Street remake couldn’t scare a third grader. The biggest reaction to Devil came when audiences laughed over the story credit – “from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan.” And Survival of the Dead proved the zombie genre George A. Romero created has left him in the dust.

And let’s all agree that none of the Twilight films should be thrown in the horror category.

What’s worse is when a solid horror entry hits theaters it made precious little coin. Both Piranha 3D, the very definition of a B movie delight, and Let Me In underperformed ...

It is another huge week for home video. Almost a dozen DVD and Blu-ray releases are worth your attention, ranging from classic films to remakes of classic films.

It seems every genre is represented this week, from film Noir to grindhouse double features. There are kids kicking butt and kids turning their heads all the way around. Max is mad and beauty falls in love with a beast.

All puns aside, this week is one of the best in terms of sheer volume and should give you no reason to leave your collection alone. There is something for everybody.

Nightmare On Elm Street 2 Is Coming, Likely In 3D

The final box office figures are in for this past weekend and they show that Platinum Dune’s A Nightmare On Elm Street remake grossed $32.9 million in its first three days of release – that’s just about enough to cover production costs on the new Freddy Krueger flick.

Needless to say, Warner Bros. is already looking to develop a sequel that would see Jackie Earle Haley back as the metal-clawed Krueger – and yes, there’s a good chance his next killing spree will be in 3D.

New ‘Elm Street’ Clip, Image, And Interview

Freddy’s back and ready to attack theaters in the U.S. tomorrow (April 30th) in the highly-anticipated remake of Wes Craven’s 1984 horror film, A Nightmare On Elm Street, with music video director Samuel Bayer taking over directorial duties on this horror movie remake.

Remakes are a dime a dozen these days, and horror remakes have especially found a niche of being easily marketed to a built-in audience of die-hard fans. But just because classic horror films are remade numerous times a year doesn’t mean the end result is any good.

In general, most remakes are unwarranted, but there are a few out there that work. And by work, I mean they improved on the original movie’s concept or story, and deliver a better version. On the other hand, there are a number of horror remakes that simply don’t work – remakes that provide nothing new or innovate, and worst of all, the end result is so bad that it soils the original.

Brad Fuller Talks ‘Elm Street’ Sequel & ‘Friday the 13th 2′

New Line Cinema’s A Nightmare on Elm Street remake – which will arrive in theaters this week – may be highly anticipated by most horror aficionados, but its producer Brad Fuller is waiting for the opening weekend box office report until he starts making concrete plans for a sequel.

The hesitation by Fuller is no doubt in part due to this past week’s announcement that his Friday the 13th Part 2 - which was to be shot in 3D no less – has been put on indefinite hold.

‘Nightmare On Elm Street’ Director Battled 3D Conversion

Surprised you don’t have the option of seeing the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street in 3D this coming weekend? Wish you could experience Freddy’s claws popping out of the screen as if they could stab you right in your seat?

There’s a new featurette on this summer’s Predators flick and a new TV spot for the upcoming remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street now online for those in need of their sci-fi action/horror fix for the day.

First, 20th Century Fox continues to build fanboy anticipation for their reboot of the Predator franchise with a new featurette that consists primarily of Predators footage with director Nimrod Antal and producer Robert Rodriguez chatting about their love for the original Predator and their intention to create something new while still paying homage to previous entries in the sci-fi franchise.

This week in the Breakdown, we’ve got a bit of nostalgia mixed in with a couple of under-appreciated indies. In the last edition of our DVD/Blu-ray feature, there wasn’t much on the new release front, but a Blu-ray Lord of the Rings kept plenty of home video lovers occupied. Now that the trilogy is in the “L” section of your collection, what will this week bring?

Let’s just say one new release didn’t do so hot in the box office and the other didn’t even make it there. At least the re-releases are some of cinema’s most revered classics in their respective genres.

In one of the weaker weeks of new releases in recent memory, Blu-ray is giving the world a few re-release treats. This week in “The Breakdown” we spotlight some old and new classics making their way to the specialized format and a couple of box office duds debuting on shelves.

It doesn’t get too much better next week, but getting the Lord of the Rings Trilogy on Blu-ray should leave you with plenty to watch until the next big release comes along. While the new releases this week are favored by some, they were financial nightmares, collecting less than $10 million combined at the box office. But who knows, some films have a fantastic shelf life after fairing poorly in theaters…

New ‘Nightmare On Elm Street’ Trailer, Clip & Poster [Updated]

The third trailer for New Line Cinema’s remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street is floating around online and it… well, pretty much offers the same things we’ve seen in the advertising campaign so far.

Teenagers in peril as they struggle to stay awake, flashes of creepy, blue-lit nightmarish landscapes, and Jackie Earle Haley exuding menace as Freddy Krueger while delivering his lines in what is quickly becoming his trademark Rorschach breed raspy voice.

If you’re not already looking forward to this new horror flick, then the trailer won’t help much.

Unfortunately we learned that the new trailer is a bootleg, and we don’t post those kinds of things here on Screen Rant. ...

Freddy Krueger Interrupts MTV With New TV Spots

The marketing for the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street remake/reboot has brought back an old gimmick: during some ads for America’s Best Dance Crew, Freddy Krueger comes out of nowhere and interrupts them as a way to advertise A Nightmare on Elm Street.
