Since the Fall TV season has kicked off with new series starting up, I thought I’d start paying attention again – but the numbers were rather disappointing for the week ending September 13th.

Football dominated the top 25 in ratings, taking spot numbers 1-4, 6 & 11.

Glee premiered at 18th with 7.5 million estimated viewers.

The highest ranked scripted drama in the top 25 was a repeat of NCIS on CBS.  It landed 8th in the list with 11.2 million estimated viewers.

What were the top 7 shows?  All I’m going to say is that the “reality” of the ratings charts can be rather sobering.

I know quite a few folks that enjoy their Netflix subscription.  I know a few who swear by it. Yet they might want to start rethinking their allegiance, from what I’m seeing today.

It looks like NBC shows are being pulled from the Netflix schedule, and if your guess is as good as anyone’s guess, it could be due to Hulu’s push to generate income via their ad supported traffic scheme as more shows are headed there.

The shows that have been noted as disappearing are 30 Rock, Heroes and the newer Office episodes.

We’ll also be seeing some CBS content sliding off the Netflix schedule but for the moment, NCIS looks to be sticking around.

I wonder if Disney’s bucketload of money is behind this when they invested in the service?  In what I’m seeing, ABC and NBC nets have the most advertising in their online and On Demand offerings.  And if it’s working for these networks, you know we’ll be seeing more of this as time ticks on and other networks get on board with the practice.

As far as I’m concerned, this is both good and bad.  Networks and advertisers were finding it harder to monetize their internet offerings and commercials.  Add to that the fact that advertisers still get more bang for their buck on the tube, and I’m surprised to see how quickly advertising is taking root in streaming content.  But as I watch the internet become more evolved in what they can do with ads and what they offer, you see where this is heading.  The only issue I have is that I’m forced to endure commercials on Hulu.  So I’ve started coordinating my snack runs to the kitchen accordingly.

In today’s Weekly TV Wrap Up, we’re going to talk about Fringe realities, Supernatural & Smallville news & True Blood setting records.

We’re then going to touch on some news from Fox’s House, and wrap things up with an NCIS tidbit and some more summer time ratings.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

Fringe

Despite the possibility of there being multiple realities, the showrunners for Fringe are only going to torment the viewers with one alternate reality at a time.  Thank god.  I have enough trouble with my own reality as it is!

As they put it, there’s “over here” and the alternate reality referred to as “over there,” where William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) lives.

The upcoming season will take place mostly “over here,” but what occurs “over there” will have a great impact on what happens “over here.”  (Did you follow that?)

Leonard Nimoy has already filmed one episode for season 2 and will be making numerous appearances throughout the season.

Fringe returns Sept. 17 at 9 p.m. on Fox.

Supernatural

I call this when worlds collide!  I know you’ve all been waiting for this one moment in time, but Paris Hilton is going to guest star on Supernatural.  Crickets…

She’ll be playing a demon that takes the form of, all things, Paris Hilton.  I so can’t wait for the Winchester brothers to stake her!

Eric Kripke calls it a “… a fun, irreverent episode.”  I call it frightening.

The episode, titled “American Idol,” will air on October 8, 2009.

Smallville

According showrunner Brian Peterson, they’re backing down from claims made earlier in the off-season that the upcoming 9th season of Smallville will be darker.

After they dropped that bombshell, fans started to get grumpy saying “Superman fans don’t do dark.” and “Nobody watches a TV show to become depressed.”  LOL…  I’m guessing they weren’t Battlestar Galactica fans.

Peterson went on to sooth the fanbase by adding that season 9 will not be all gloom and doom and backpedaled saying that Clark will just have some hard decisions to make.

WARNING:  He did warn us that sparks may very well fly between Clark and Lois… and they’ll be fighting zombies and …  well crap, I may have said too much already.  Zombies?  Am I reporting on Supernatural or Smallville?

True Blood

2 weeks ago, True Blood on HBO hit a record number of estimated viewers, at 4.3 million.  But then last weekend they dusted the record books again and the show brought in an estimated 4.4 million pairs of eyeballs, breaking their own personal best.

It is an awesome, well-written show and I am not surprised that they’re pulling in the viewers.

House

For you Cameron and Chase fans from House, good news:  They’re going to be back in their old jobs and off the sidelines.  Of course, nothing comes easy and with them working side-by-side, that may put some strain on their brand new marriage!

We’ll also be seeing Foreman filling in as the top doc while Dr. Gregory House is on “leave,” which promises to be a rocky transition for Foreman.

As far as Cuddy and House go, don’t be sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for anything to develop anytime soon between them.  Despite the tease of the imaginary hook-up, the showrunners are taking a step back and letting this premise simmer for a while.

Of course it all makes sense, right?  They want us to go stir crazy, but really, speaking of crazy, House does have to sort out a few things as he tries to re-balance his sanity.  He’s apparently not going to have an easy time of it.

NCIS

According to sources, be sure you do not miss the very first minute of NCIS when it starts up its new season. According to exec producer Shane Brennan, you’re going to be asking yourself if you’re seeing things or not!

Ratings

Well, without really digging up a lot of info, amongst all the reality shows, repeats of NCIS (3rd with 9.9 million viewers), CSI:NY (9th w/ 8 mil viewers), CSI Miami (11th), The Mentalist (13th) & CSI (15th) eeked out their spots in the top 20.

On cable, Burn Notice, The Closer, Royal Pains and Monk chipped out 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th respectively amongst the top 10 cable shows.

In this weeks TV Wrap Up, I’ve found  casting news about Stargate Universe, Supernatural, Psych, Friday Night Lights, Smallville, Criminal Minds and Stephen King’s book-turned-tv-series, Cell!

Stargate Universe

Stargate Universe is looking to cast a “name actress” to play the wife of Robert Carlyle’s character.

These will be flashback scenes since she will be dead by the time we see her.

Supernatural

The CW’s Supernatural is adding a recurring role of a possessed mechanic named Raphael.  He’s supposedly going to be possessed by one of the most powerful entities in the universe.

Psych

David Naughton (An American Werewolf in London) has signed up to appear in the Halloween episode of Psych.  He’ll be playing a one Dr. Ken Tucker, who is a self-serving sociopath!

Season 4 of Psych will be starting on August 7th.

Friday Night Lights

Casting has begun for season 4 of Friday Night Lights.  As high school students graduate, they move on.  So too must Adrianne Palicki, Zach Gilford, and Minka Kelly.

The rolls they’re looking to fill are named Vince, Luke, Jess and Becky.

I’ll miss watching Palicki on FNL, but she’s moving onto Supernatural, so I won’t go through any withdrawals.

Smallville

Word on the street is that the upcoming season of Smallville will have a full on Clark and Lois romance going.  I know many of you are of mixed opinions on this issue, but we’ll just have to take what they give us and hope we don’t suffer too much from any forced acting or stretched out story lines.

I guess this means Lois comes back from where ever she went last season.

Oops, does that make this a SPOILER? Sorry.

Criminal Minds

If you’re wondering if Hotch survived the season finale – heck, I don’t know!  But what I’ve read is that they are casting for the role of an emergency room doctor.

Stephen King’s Cell

So how do you get turned into a rampaging killer?  Quite possibly by a signal sent through your cell phone, according to Stephen King.

His novel Cell is being taken up by John Harrison (Tales From The Darkside: The Movie) who is putting together a script for a 4-hour mini-series based on the book.

I don’t know about you, but hopefully Harrison will figure out how to liven up the ending.  I’ve always found endings to King’s movies lacking something, but could never put a finger on it.  But that’s just me.

TV Ratings

On the big networks, CBS took the majority of the top spots, with NCIS once again ranking supreme in the ratings.  The Mentalist & CSI: Miami were the other crime dramas filling out the top-10.

Trivia:  Did you know that ABC turned down the CSI franchise when it was being shopped around?  Oops.

In the oddity department, I’m almost relieved to see that Big Brother premiered in 18th.  For me, it shows that at least one more reality cornerstone is slowly losing its grip on the viewers.  My exuberance is short lived though, as I realize the other reality competition shows for dancing and singing are still ranking up there.

On Cable, The Closer keeps closing the door on the other shows, Royal Pains is hanging in there, while the Michael Jackson memorial dominated the top 20 in different slots, as each hour of the event was broken down and placed in the rankings.

Grey’s Anatomy was the first and will be followed by Desperate Housewives, Scrubs, Ugly Betty, I Survived a Japanese Game Show and Superstars.

I thought I didn’t care about the first bunch, but that last one… WHY!?

The “S” Symbol on Smallville

According to Ausielllo on EW.com, well… I’ll just quote this one sentence:  “The iconic “S” symbol will be all over the show (Smallville) in season 9. Including on Clark’s chest.”

He also pointed out that there is no discussion at the CW at this time about a Smallville spin-off taking place.

News on the street is that the producers of NCIS are looking for an actor to play a male agent in his 30’s.  The role has potential to be a recurring role.

I presume if the character/actor hit it off in their popularity scales, he’ll become a recurring role.

“But why a flash back??”

Season 8 premiere of CSI Miami is going to take place in 1997.  It will be an origins type episode showing the early days of the team.

Rumor has it that the flash back narration will be done by a comatose Delko.  I’m guessing a dream state of such.

I’m betting the makeup and CGI people were working hard on this one!

Welcome to my weekly TV Wrap Up.

NCIS Spin-off Adds Cast

Linda Hunt will be joining the cast of the NCIS spin-off as a hard-nosed former film industry technician who oversees the “backroom” support staff.

Of note, Louise Lombard was let go from the staff, as the cast seems to be constantly evolving.

Is it me, or will we have a hard time getting past the ‘ghosts’ from Linda Hunt’s past?

Chuck Season 3 Tidbits

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zachary Levi chats a bit about the upcoming third season of Chuck.

He talks about how folks are expecting “Orange Orange” to become a Subway and other ideas like that.

He also reminds us that next season is a 13-episode season, but if the ratings are good enough, NBC will add additional episodes.  (That’s the part where it means “tell your friends.”)

Meghan Markle (Deal Or No Deal, 90210) is joining Fringe as a recurring role in the upcoming season.  She’ll be playing a brash and quick-witted FBI agent.

Well, at least she’s moving up from briefcases duty and teen angst shows.

Is Charlie Coming Back To Lost Or What?

What are the chances of Dominic Monaghan (Charlie) returning to the next season of Lost?

It depends on the rumors surrounding the ill-fated rocker.

He’s been seen having breakfast with showrunner Damon Lindelof.  That could mean what?  That two buds are having breakfast together?  Or are they plotting the return of Charlie to the island in some form or fashion?

Lie To Me Season 1

The Blu-ray and DVD release of season 1 for Fox’s Lie To Me are due out on August 25th. The show is being released by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Noah Wyle, Steven Spielberg and Alien Invasions

Noah Wyle has been snagged to headline a yet-to-be-titled sci-fi show on TNT that will involve yet another alien invasion plot.

The storyline kicks in gear approximately 6 months after an insidious evil alien species invades the Earth and Wyle will be the leader of the human resistance.

I’m a little disappointed that this premise sounds so much like another upcoming show that starts with a V.  I expected a bit more originality out of Spielberg.

• NBC’s ‘Chuck’ Will Start Streaming Soon

With the CBS 2009 season, we have a few favorites coming back, a show that changed networks and night and a huge gamble that paid out less than the California lottery.

The shows that got the digital advertisers ax were Eleventh Hour, Harper’s Island, The Unit, Without a Trace and Worst Week.

I’m bummed The Unit was cut and surprised by Harper’s Island lack of viewers.  Harper’s was well written compared to some but I guess viewers just don’t have the patience for murder-mystery dramas.  I have to admit, my first reaction was flat to the idea but I gave it a chance, got hooked and now, got disappointed.  Grr.

One of the most expensive television shows ever produced, Eleventh Hour, apparently was just as flat as I felt it was when I watched the first few episodes.  It never snagged me and seemed what I call OTTO (over the top obvious) in how they initially delivered their character introductions.  Shows that go OTTO on me usually lose me.  I’d rather see compelling story up front and slowly let the characters demonstrate who they are over time.  When I see OTTO, I always fear the show runners are scared about their stories and try to pump us full of concern for the 2-D characters right up front.

The NCIS spin-off called NCIS: Los Angeles is right behind NCIS on Tuesdays.  CBS also moved their huge hit, The Mentalist to Thursday nights which is bad news for the other networks.

The much anticipated Alex O’Loughlin drama 3 Rivers will be airing on Sundays between Amazing Race and Cold Case.

Medium was sent packing at NBC, but CBS snatched it up and is now going to air it on Fridays following Ghost Whisperer.  That should be a great combination of shows.  At least they’re not going to have two 30-minute, unrelated genre shows like comedies be their lead-in.

If you look closely, Flashpoint, which hooked me in one episode, is not mentioned as being canceled or renewed.  It’s in limbo, or more accurately, it will air during the summer time.  Along with Friday nights, the summer season is almost the worst for TV shows.  Most networks don’t air new shows they want to succeed during the summer…  it’s like a really long drawn out Friday to them.

Mid season shows that are coming at us that aren’t on the list below are:

The Bridge: Is about a tough and dedicated police officer who is voted to become the police union’s dynamic leader. It stars Aaron Douglas, of Battlestar Galactica fame.

Miami Trauma:  Is about a team of expert surgeons who work at one of the premiere trauma facilities in the country, where only patients with life threatening injuries are treated.  It will star Jeremy Northam.

Due to technical difficulties beyond my control, the digital dog ate my homework. Or, I had to write this article twice! The digital dog just sounds more light-hearted than what the second line implies. Enough about my woes with technological gremlins.

Better Off Ted

As you can see the premiere of Better Off Ted wasn’t as big as ABC might have hoped for. Maybe things will pick up after basketball.

Some Of Our Faves

Though the Fox network had its usual low set of numbers for a Friday with Dollhouse and The Sarah Connor Chronicles, both shows had a small improvement from the week before. Supernatural also had some increase in viewers but Smallville had a slight drop.

Word on the street is that despite the numbers, Dollhouse may return next season. No promises Though.

Battlestar Galactice Finale

The highly debated two-hour series-finale of Battlestar Galactica brought in 2.4 million viewers last Friday. No, not big on the numbers compared to network, but good enough for cable networks. That number made it the most-watched episode since Jan. 6, 2006 and it outperformed the season three-finale by 56%.

Burn Notice

The second season-finale of the USA drama Burn Notice hit a record 7.31 million viewers in its Friday 10 p.m. time slot. Go Michael Westin!!

Nothing Says Canceled Like…

This is pure conjecture on my part, but from what I’m seeing, I feel that The Sarah Connor Chronicles is not coming back next season. I say that because Stephanie Jacobsen, (Jesse from The Sarah Connor Chronicles), has joined the cast of the Melrose Place pilot in the role of Lauren. Lauren is a med student who is a high-end call girl by night. (Now let’s see if you can get her accent out of your head now!)

On top of that, Brian Austin Green, is being reported as lining up a role in another CW pilot called Body Politic.

Granted, these two are not main characters and these shows are only pilots, but I’m guessing some contracts either allow for this, or have ended on TSCC. My feel is that the execs at FOX aren’t holding their breath for an additional season and specific characters are not going to be needed. I actually got that feel from the panel at WonderCon in ‘Frisco anyway.

TSCC did get their 2nd season from the advertisers, and again – my conjecture – because of the upcoming Terminator Salvation movie. With that movie fast approaching release date, the curiosity seekers have dwindled and the tie-ins that could be, are no longer.

Last weeks episode carried quite a bit of drama with it and I am enjoying it. Yet there’s only so far they can go with it.

In case you have the hots for additional news on the desperate reboot attempt of Melrose Place, other cast members reporting in are Colin Egglesfield, (All My Children), Michael Rady (Greek), Katie Cassidy (Supernatural), Ashlee Simpson (7th Heaven) and Jessica Lucas (90210).

Brian Austin Green’s role as Derek Reese on TSCC may not be the only thing he’s possibly leaving behind! This is just shameless gossip, and a great excuse to add a nice picture to my post, but it’s been reported that Megan Fox moved out of the house she was sharing with Brian.

You know those moments that we look back on and reference about the “One that got away”? I think Green just took the cake on this one!

The Sopranos Creator Returns To HBO

David Chase, the creator behind The Sopranos, is coming back to HBO with a new idea in mind.

A Ribbon of Dreams is a mini-series that is set in 1913 and follows two very different men — one a college-educated mechanical engineer and the other, a cowboy with a violent past.

They form a partnership and become motion picture pioneers. Their journey is followed as the Hollywood film industry evolves from silent westerns to talking pictures and into the studio system of present day.

The premise initially seems kind of ‘meh’, but if you dwell on this, it may have a ton of potential with the various eras and lots of different people that may come and go through the series.

No Heather Locklear Here

Even though the CW landed many of the veteran stars back on set for the 90210 reboot, they are having no luck getting Heather Locklear for their new version of Melrose Place. I think it might have been a matter of who is employed and who is not. Locklear has a few projects in the making.

The CW has tried to cover their tracks with this thinly disguised cop out press release:

“There wasn’t a way to bring her back that made sense.”

Riiight. I love PR. But some days it seems like it really is their job to get blood out of a turnip. (Have you figured out this was just another excuse to post a pretty face?)

Back Gets More Cast

CBS has two more stars for their new pilot titled Back. The CBS pilot will star Skeet Ulrich (Jericho) and the two new cast members are Sherry Stringfield (ER) and D.B. Woodside (24).

Back is about a man (Skeet Ulrich) who returns home after eight years. The catch? Everyone thought he died in the 9/11 tragedies, so he was reported as missing.

Sherry Stringfield is Ulrich’s wife. Upon his return, he discovers she’s moved on with a new hubby, which is classic Cast Away. (Man I hurt for him when Hanks returned home to find his wife off with a new hubby and kids.) With Ulrich’s return to this depressing scenario, he’s going to need a shrink. That’s where Woodside comes in. He will be playing that shrink.

Dang, I’m depressed for him already!

PS: Before you ask, no, I don’t know why he went away.

Lost Season Finale Conjecture

It seems that ABC was advertising or seeking extras in Hawaii to play the parts of guests at a wedding on Lost. The timing of such an inquiry is not lost on a few. If schedules are on track, this is the time frame that they would be shooting the season-finale.

Now what would a wedding pertain to? Who knows. It could be a past wedding, or a future wedding. Or a future wedding from their past that is really the present yesterday? I think I just hurt my brain.

Next Top Model Gone Bad

Last week 4 people were injured and 2 hospitalized after a stampede of high heel cuties erupted in New York during a casting call for America’s Next Top Model.

At first I thought there was an impromptu makeup sale on the street corner.

It turned out that while hundreds of fashion model wannabe’s were lingering around in line to audition for the show, an argument had ensued. During or after the spat, a BMW either drove by or broke down near the mascara smeared mob and when it spewed some smoke, someone in the automotive-challenged hoard had yelled bomb, and the surge for pseudo safety was on!

The three that were arguing were arrested.

I can’t imagine what a herd of spiked heels running might sound like.

Universal Pictures Has Some !!!!’s

The Advertising Standards Authority, (ASA) a London-based watchdog group, is asking British broadcasters to not air a commercial regarding the DVD release of the 2008 Angelina Jolie flick, Wanted. They’re saying that the movie glorifies and glamorizes gun violence.

Being that the ASA doesn’t get that people are not that stupid, Clearcast, the approving agencies for TV advertisements feels confident that viewers just might be able to distinguish the difference between the fantasy shooting action in Wanted vs. real life. What? You can’t curve bullets? Crap.

Per BBC News, Universal Pictures has replied with the most humorous statement:

“Maybe the ASA, which also banned the ‘Wanted’ posters last year, objects to a female lead handling the big guns, rather than the guns themselves.”

Though I have a hard time believing that was their official company line on the issue, I think Universal Pictures just made a fan out of me anyway.

So what’s happening this week with some of our favorite television shows? I’ll fill you in on the vaporizing ratings for Dollhouse, The Sarah Connor Chronicles and others. I touch on some Supernatural & NCIS casting news and a season ending story development. I then sprinkle some CSI:NY bits and round it out with some Lily cast updates.

Ratings Notes

A sad ratings note: The completely non-advertising supported set of repeats of Jericho on The CW scored a 0 in ratings. A zero. Of course they are Nielsen families, so that means none of them made any sense of it the first time around and they don’t want to deal with it a 2nd time.

Though it hasn’t been officially announced, inside sources are saying Heroes will be renewed for another 18-20 episodes next season.

Knight Rider, on the other hand, has been parked and done. The season finale had a 21% drop off in ratings from its premiere. Sorry to say for the KR fans out there. I guess it’s time to snatch up the DVD when or if that ever comes out.

Dollhouse fell below 4 million viewers last week, snagging only 3.5 million viewers during the airtime. This is Echo, looking for viewers in the audience!

The Sarah Connor Chronicles viewers dwindled to below 3 million viewers. Friday may be bad, but this is really bad. Maybe as they quit focusing on Sarah’s “3 dot pursuit” and more on Cameron, we might wake up on Fridays once again.

V Snags A Firefly Alum

ABC’s reboot of V has landed Morena Baccarin (aka Firefly’s Inara and Stargate SG-1’s Adria) has been cast as Anna, whose referred to as the “frontwoman” for the alien visitors who come to Earth.

Supernatural

Now that Supernatural has found itself renewed for a 5th season, we will be seeing more of Misha Collins, who plays the angel Castiel. Collins will become a series regular next season. Misha says that with his extended stay, he’ll be doing some butt whooping.

NCIS

The news on the street is that NCIS is going to focus heavily on Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo) in the last 4 episodes of the season. But with their complicated love triangle involving Michael Rifkin (Merik Tadros), they have planned a pretty explosive ending lined up for the viewers.

CSI: NY

Winding up to the season finale of CSI: NY, big things are going to happen. The team loses one of their own, Ed Asner will be making an appearance and Craig T. Nelson winds up his story arc. I dare not say anymore!

Lily

The Gossip Girl spin off tentatively titled Lily is starting to line up some cast.

The CW is in advanced talks with Cynthia Watros (Lost) and Andrew McCarthy (Lipstick Jungle) to come onboard. Watros and McCarthy would play play CeCe and Rick Rhodes, Lily’s parents and Serena’s grandparents. (Caroline Lagerfelt plays CeCe on the current series.)

The “backdoor pilot” episode is slated to air May 11.

As anyone seen the latest COMCAST commercial where they have this sing-song monotone chant / rap throughout the ad while real people exist in some cartoonish world? Is it just me, or do you want to throw your TV out the window when that ad comes on? Ack!

As we all know, ratings weren’t too hot for Dollhouse and Sarah Connor Chronicles. Dollhouse did better than expected, while The Sarah Connor Chronicles did suffer the consequences of the dreaded Friday night time slot. That’s an ouch. But I also touch a little on what I saw on Battlestar Galactica, have a bit of Smallville cast news and more cast has been hired for the NCIS spin-off that everyone waiting for. And a few other tidbits & dribbles along the way.

Dollhouse

I think we need to chalk up ratings to a very narrowly focused group of people. With the blinders on, the advertisers trust in them pretty blindly considering how the viewing technology has changed. Why am I yet again (like I always seem to do), bashing the ratings system? Because even though Dollhouse underperformed in its Friday night time slot, it has found its way to the #1 spot of TV episodes on iTunes. When it first hit iTunes, it was 19th but it quietly made its way to the top. So the Nielsen families missed the point, in fact many of us did. But the Whedon fans have made their statement. They have shown their faith. (Oh my, that wasn’t supposed to be a pun!)

Battlestar Galactica

Is it getting crazy or what? They’ve presented a lot of background in these last few weeks but now Adama has to begrudgingly have the Galactica repaired with living Cylon ship material? I just have to wonder how that is going to play out in the remaining episodes. I am at least being surprised with Ellen as the final Cylon, and their letting on there was a 6th and 7th model!! And who is this Daniel Cylon model that had to be boxed? Wow, they are just pouring out the revelations as we continue to wonder about Starbuck.

Smallville

Want to hear some wacky news? As of last week, Tom Welling has yet to sign a contract for the 9th season of Smallville. I gotta wonder what’s up? Does he have them by the whats, knowing the show can’t go on without him?

NCIS

Spin-off news: A few more roles have been cast for the upcoming NCIS spin-off! Louise Lombard (CSI-Sofia Curtis character) will be playing Clara, the female lead. Clara used to be a major in the MP force and has become an investigator. Peter Cambor (Notes from the Underbelly) will be playing psychologist with a quick wit. A newcomer to the American scene, Daniela Ruah is playing Kensi, a young investigator.

Rescue Me

Despite not starting its 5th season yet, Rescue Me with Denis Leary has been renewed by FX for a sixth season.  FX is very impressed with the upcoming 5th season episodes that much.  Rescue Me premieres April 7th on FX.  I saw the funniest ad for the show the other week.  One of the firefighters is sitting on the can in a house thats burning down, and the posse comes up and says dang, even with the house burning down he still stinks it up!  If you see this ad, get ready to hold your ribs.

The Oscars

Sadly… OK… not – the Academy Awards lost their biggest advertiser last week. L’Oréal Paris pulled out, leaving the Academy to scramble for a new cash cow. General Motors also pulled out, but that’s understandable. Hyundai and Audi took GM’s place, but it’s being rumored that the Oscars are still missing 12% of their advertising time. Oh goody, more ABC show ads. Personally, I kind of got tired of Hollywood patting itself in its own back.

Miscellaneous Tidbits

This is so not TV or Movie related, but: SIRIUS XM had an investor bail them out of a situation that would have put them in bankruptcy last Tuesday. Liberty Media Corp. gave them a $530 million loan, for a 40% equity interest in the company. I don’t get why anyone would want to try and bail out a company that on top of last week’s debt, still owes $1 billion in debt due later this year and $3 billion in debt due in the coming years.

Hugh Laurie of FOX’s House will be serving as the Grand Marshal for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway on Feb. 22. (Fontana, CA.) All this means is he gets to yell into the microphone, “Gentlemen, start your engines!” I’ve seen some good ones, and I’ve seen some lame ones. I hope he pulls it out. While NASCAR is in town they rub shoulders with as much Hollywood as they can, and with that in mind the Band from TV are scheduled to rock the California FanZone Stage at the track. This band Band from TV includes well known actors like: Greg Grunberg (drums) and Adrian Pasdar (guitar) both from Heroes; James Denton (guitar), from Desperate Housewives; Bob Guiney (vocals), who appeared on The Bachelor and Jesse Spencer (violin) currently starring in House. This week, we chat about Caprica, Supernatural, the NCIS spin-off, a new vampire pilot from The CW, Criminal Minds, Ghost Whisperer, Bones, Grey’s Anatomy and some bits about ABC renewing some shows. Also, since we reported that Dave Letterman was announcing the 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model last week, it’s only right that we finish what we started with a little something at the bottom of this post. Shall we get on with it? I knew you’d say that.

But before I say anything else, I would be remiss to not remind you that Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles are coming to your TV this Friday night!

Caprica, the prequel to Battlestar Galactica:
The two-hour prequel of Caprica is not due to air until the series launches in 2010. That isn’t all that far away but if you can’t handle the wait, you can actually buy it earlier than that on DVD or digital download beginning April 21st.

Caprica will be starring Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcolmson and Polly Walker. Also Joss Whedon fans are spinning in joy because Caprica is being executive produced by noted Buffy The Vampire Slayer and BSG alumni Jane Espenson.

Stoltz, in his ever dead pan sort of approach said:

“I’m very excited about it. We’re all sort of surprised that something with this kind of rich interesting content is actually going forward.“

Hopefully it’s not too deep of a content filled show to drag it down. We all know how intellectual story lines can kill a show these days with our much valued Nielsen families! Source: E Online,

A Supernatural Brother Is Cast!
It’s finally happened! The CW cast the third Winchester brother for Supernatural! Jake Abel (Threshold) has been tapped to step into this critical role as the third Winchester brother, an 18-year-old named Adam Milligan. He will be joining Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles in the April 23rd episode.

Adam is the product of an affair that John Winchester had while he was off on one of his demon squashing trips. And John knew about him.

He’ll only be in one episode and the episode has got some surprises for us. Hmm.. What do you think girls? Source: E Online.

The NCIS spin-off is getting its cast:
The NCIS spin-off is staffing up nicely. Chris O’Donnell has been tapped to play Callen, a character who changes personalities often! And the other cool cat looking at a role in the show is LL Cool J, who was reported to be in final talks to play the role of Sam Hanna, an ex-Navy SEAL.

CBS still has four other roles to fill and the new team will have their spin-off introduced as an episode of NCIS to air later this season before getting their own show slot. Source: EW.com.

The CW Jumps On the Vampire Bandwagon:
Before the much vaunted series of Twilight books, there was a four-book series called Vampire Diaries written by L.J. Smith. With Twilight having gone all agog, the publisher has released the books again.

At first I thought they were only trying to cash in on the vampire craze, but the books have hit the NY Times best seller list and three more books have been ordered.

Now The CW has ordered a pilot based on the 1993 book series. They’ll be bringing together Kevin Williamson (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Julie Plec (Kyle XY) to both executive produce and write the pilot.

It will be about a young woman who’s torn between two vampire brothers. There is a good brother and an evil brother and they’re battling for the souls of the young woman, her buddies, her family and the small town where they live in. Sounds like a Mongolian barbecue run to me! Source: Variety

Criminal Minds Guest Star
If you’re an Alex McLoughlin fan, and a Criminal Minds fan, go crazy if you want! McLoughlin will be guest starring in an episode of Criminal Minds where he will be playing the role of a serial killer. Dang, if you think about his demeanor, that just sounds perfect now, doesn’t it?

The episode is going to be unique attempt at seeing things from the killers Point of view.

It’s also been hinted at that we’ll be seeing more of Loughlin on CBS soon. No more details were available. No, don’t get your hopes that high. I doubt it’s Moonlight, but heck, that sure would be nice though, wouldn’t it? Source: EW.com.

Ghost Whisperer
It’s about frackin’ time! Melinda will be finally telling the new Sam about her abilities and she’s going to be letting him in on his own secret issues in the March 6th episode. Now, let’s see how he handles that one!!! Melinda will also be encountering some ghost hunters. LOL… Too bad it’s CBS. NBC could have brought Ghost Hunters International across the set for one episode. Now that would have been an awesome cross-over! Source: CBS Press

Speaking of Grey’s Anatomy
During an interview, James Pickens Jr. who plays Dr. Richard Webber gave up the ghost and revealed that Katherine Heigl and T.K. Knight are both leaving the show. This news has been floating around as rumors since July on Knight and December on Heigl. I won’t miss Heigl, but it’s a shame about Knight. Source: Us Magazine.

Here’s the second post of our new regular feature: The Weekly TV Wrap Up.

The 2nd half of the 08-09 season is officially underway and I am pretty busy trying to watch so many of the new shows that have come out that my recorder is starting to smoke. This morning it said “EAS” and I had to reboot it. (I have no clue what EAS means.) I don’t think my recorder likes me anymore.

But with all the new shows coming up, there’s still news and events to report on. So let’s get this show on the road and get you caught up on some of the things going on behind the veil of our television glass.

Reminders:
1. The resident private eye / vampire, Mick St. John is back in repeats of Moonlight. Moonlight stars Alex O’Loughlin, Sophia Myles & Jason Dohring and will air on The Sci-Fi Channel, starting this Friday night, January 23rd.

2. Do you remember when aliens were taking people over and the infiltration was an insidious process that drove you nuts? If you’re thinking about the 2005 series, Invasion, yes, that’s what I mean. It too is going to get some air time in repeats on The Sci-Fi Channel starting this Friday, January 23rd. I liked the show when it was on. It starred William Fichtner, Eddie Cibrian, Mari Matchett and Lisa Sheridan (Whom I really enjoy watching!).

3. It never goes well when you ask your rag-tag fleet of surviving humans to accept an alliance with Cylons. And that is exactly what Admiral Adama is going to be finding out tomorrow night on Battlestar Galactica, in the episode titled “A Disquiet Follows My Soul”. Source: SciFi.com

News Tidbits:
4. Speaking of Battlestar Galactica, last Friday nights premiere episode did very well for NBC’s Sci-Fi Channel. At least as well as a sci fi show on Friday night is concerned. It brought in a total of 2.1 million total viewers. It ranked first in men 18-49 and men 25-54. Source: Media Week

5. CBS president Nina Tassler tossed out a few bones last week while talking to reporters that a pilot for the NCIS spinoff is happening. It will air as an episode of NCIS. That seems cost effective! Source: Variety.com

6. In that same chat, from item No. 5, Nina Tassler pointed out that though Eleventh Hour isn’t doing so good in the ratings department, they’re not ready to drop it yet. Rightfully so!

If you remember back in August we reported that Eleventh Hour was one of the most expensive shows ever made. $4 mil for the pilot and $2 mil per episode and they were committed up to at least 13 episodes. That’s why they aren’t throwing the towel in! It was a pricey gamble on an adaptation of a British mini-series. Source: Variety.com

7. If you’re a fan of NBC’s Chuck and Chevy Chase, you’ll be in heaven. Chevy Chase is guest starring in 3 episodes as a mega-billionaire tech mogul who is accused of stealing Chuck’s fathers ideas. Source: Hollywood Reporter

8. Speaking of Chuck, Scott Bakula has found himself a spot back on TV. He’ll be playing Zachary Levi’s dad in Chuck. His stint is scheduled to kick off for a few episodes in April. Source: EW.com,

9. The cast of Stargate: Universe continues to grow! They’ve added Justin Louis (Hidden Hills) to play Colonel Everett Young, the experienced Stargate team leader. Jamil Walker Smith (Hey Arnold) will play Sr. Sgt. Ronald Greer, a Marine with a temper. David Blue (Ugly Bette, Moonlight) will play Eli Wallace, a slacker genius. And finally, Brian J. Smith () will play Lt. Matthew Scott, the junior member of the Stargate team. Filming will start in the Spring with a targeted Fall 2009 launch. Source: SciFi Wire

10. NBC announced this last week the renewals for The Office, 30 Rock and The Biggest Loser for the 2009-2010 season. (How on this green Earth did Joelle actually end up staying. Egads!!!) Source: NBC

11. You keep asking about My Name Is Earl and at the moment, I’m thinking that no news good news? There has yet (At the time of my writing this article) to be any news as to NBC’s plans to renew My name Is Earl. As soon as I hear anything, you will know it. I can’t imagine they wouldn’t. Would they?

12. How bad is it when you get replaced by a cooking competition show? Ouch.

When Knight Rider closes out its ordered number of episodes, the reality cooking show Chopping Block will be taking its place. It will debut on Wednesday, March 11th at 8 p.m.. Talk about adding insult to injury. Source: Media Week

14. Bob May, the man who wore the “Robot” suit in the 1960’s sci fi show, Lost In Space, passed away last weekend. Our condolences to his family and friends. Incidentally, he was not the voice of Robot. May was just the power behind the flailing arms while Dick Tufeld voiced the Robot. In particular, one infamous phrase we all know and love, “Danger, Will Robinson! Danger, Will Robinson!” while May did all the flailing of his arms around! Source: Sci Fi Wire

15. As it stands, almost 7% of U.S. households will see “snow” when the “Digital Transition” kicks in on February 17th. Right now, there might be a delay in the transition, but as of right now, they seem to be moving along on schedule. Source: Media Week

Double-Talk Of The Week:
16. When asked about the dropped shows Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money, ABC’s President Steve McPherson says that they would have liked to air the end of those shows but “… because of the way the timing worked out, we weren’t able to“.

He said he wished they could have given the producers enough notice to write up finales. McPherson added that “For us, it was a frustration that we couldn’t find a larger audience – or that Nielsen couldn’t find a larger audience. I really love those shows. They delivered what they promised.”

Interestingly, it is being pointed out that the network did have sufficient time to give the show runners a heads up on making show ending episodes. If I were a guessing man, I’d say these shows probably aren’t coming back, even if they do have unaired episodes still sitting in the can. Source: EW.com
