This week features some worthy DVD and Blu-ray releases, but no re-releases of note. One of the biggest television events of the year hits home video alongside a pair of Oscar-nominated documentaries.

One of this week’s most intriguing items is Jackass 3, which will not be released as a 3D home video. Considering its power as a 3D release in theaters, it’s surprising to see it only hit shelves as a 2D release, so fans with an expensive 3D television will be disappointed, to say the least.

Morning Glory and The Next Three Days rest on opposite sides of the genre pool, but might share weak sales as home video releases amidst the more well-known competition. Those that saw both films in theaters might head to stores right away, but both disappointed at the box office ...

Toy Story 3, The King’s Speech & More Ineligible For WGA Screenplay Awards

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 28, 2010

This week:

Disney gets Tangled with Harry Potter; Twilight producers have a Game Theory; the truth is out there with Mulder and Scully; Gael Garcia Bernal and Al Pacino say “no more” with Hands of Stone; the Empire doesn’t strike back but there is indeed love from Russia and Michael J. Bassett hears the bells of Saint Mary’s.

Box Office

Harry Potter remained box office champion over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The boy wizard and the Deathly Hallows: Part One should bank in the region of $80 million over the five-day weekend ($50 million for the three days). That gives the film a huge $220 million cumulative gross.

Disney’s Tangled in 3D had to settle for the runner-up position. The mouse house shouldn’t feel too bad, as the film banked an impressive $69 million over the five days.

Harry Potter debuts at Number One; Gambit is on the way; beware The Swarm; DiCaprio sets his sights on JFK; Gore Verbinski has a Magical Law; Apollo 18 blasts off with a new director; there’s a new Boston-based crime drama on the way; Disney gets ready to Hover; Kermit and company acquires some new friends and get ready for the Martyrs.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (read our review) gave the long-running franchise its best ever debut. The seventh Potter pic should grab an estimated $125 million over the weekend, beating out Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire’s $102 million opening. It’s pretty amazing that a franchise like this has seen so much audience love and loyalty over the years – considering that they release one every year or two. Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 14, 2010

This week:

Unstoppable is stoppable; Dune‘s future is looking bleak; Paramount readies some high-profile films; Warner Bros. want Tales From The Gangster Squad; Courtney Ford needs True Blood; will Merlin have magic? Women kick butt in The Athena Project; Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank and Ashton Kutcher get ready for New Year’s Eve; and lots more.

Last week’s champion Megamind and the Denzel Washington flick Unstoppable (review here), directed by Tony Scott, fought it out for the top spot over the weekend. It looks like the animated superhero film came out on top, after grossing an estimated $30.1 million, upping its total to $89.8 million.

That doesn’t mean that Washington’s film disappointed – as it grossed $23.5 million, which is business as usual for a Washington action effort.

Summertime and all that easy living is now done, and unless you’re one of those people who lives where the sun is always shining then the onset of Fall means four things: colder weather, earlier sunsets, heavier clothing and movies galore.

Yes, the summer has all those big blockbusters we’ve been waiting all year to see, but Fall is the time when we actually want to be in the movie theater: when being outdoors is no longer an attractive alternative and the cinema offers many, many, award-worthy films. A few of them even stand the chance of being pretty good.

Of course the Fall movie landscape has been changing pretty radically in the last few years: September is now a “showcase for unique genre films” instead of just a studio dumping ground ...

Harrison Ford In ‘Morning Glory’ Trailer

The words “Harrison Ford” and “comedy” don’t inspire too much faith from movie going audiences these days (I’d disagree, but that’s just me).

Ford’s recent output has left a lot of fans cold (I won’t bother to mention the titles of the films, you know what they are), but his new role in the J.J. Abram’s-produced Morning Glory appears to show a looser, more relaxed Ford.

The veteran actor appears to be relishing this comedic role, which could bode very well for his character in the upcoming Cowboys and Aliens, a sci-fi/western mashup that’s being directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man 2).

Ford stars in Morning Glory alongside Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton, Jeff Goldblum, and Patrick Wilson. Check out the trailer below:

1. Matthew McConaughey’s production company J.K. Livin is producing a comedy called Exchange Student. According to The Hollywood Reporter:

“The story revolves around two exchange students, one who ships out from the U.S. and one who comes in, who experience new environments in very different ways: One has the time of his life, the other goes off the rails. The tenor of the project is described as a family comedy with wry overtones a la Wes Anderson.”

Mike Vukadinovich will write a script from the idea that originated with “Bongos” McConaughey, who may also take a role in the film.

Keaton & Goldblum Have ‘Glory’ For J.J Abrams

Now that he has Star Trek in the can and ready for release, J.J. Abrams is rounding up the cast for his next flick. Okay, so he’s not directing (only producing) but the man has become a brand of his own much like Judd Apatow – must be something about having the initials J.A.

Morning Glory is a newsroom comedy that is set to star Harrison Ford and Rachael McAdams. The film now has two new cast members to round out the cast and they’re A-list talent.

Diane Keaton and Jeff Goldblum have now signed on to the Roger Michell directed comedy. According to Variety:

“(The film) centers on an aspiring news producer (McAdams) who tries to save a failing morning show by getting control of its feuding anchors. Ford and Keaton will play the dueling on-air personalities. Goldblum will portray McAdams’ ...

This week:

Adam Shankman sails Sinbad; Sam Worthington may be The Phantom; Barry Sonnenfeld reads The How-To Guide for Saving the World and Rachel McAdams has Morning Glory.

1. Adam Shankman is in negotiations to direct a new Sinbad film for Sony Pictures. The film was originally going to star Keanu Reeves and Rob Cohen was set to direct, however the plug was pulled following the cinematic travesty that was Stealth. According to Variety:

“The story centers on Sinbad and his crew, who are marooned off the coast of China and embark on a quest to find the lamp of Aladdin.”

I just can’t see this being any good.

Comedy, Drama & Jack Ryan In Harrison Ford’s Future?

It’s been well documented here at Screen Rant that Paramount Pictures has been trying to get the Jack Ryan franchise up and running again. Played in the past by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck the studio are currently in a bit of a pickle over who should fill their shoes. Ryan Gosling, James Franco and Aaron Eckhart have all been mentioned, however Harrison Ford believes that he has what it takes to play Jack Ryan once more.

Considering the ass that he kicked in Indiana Jones this past summer – you can’t disagree.

Speaking to MTV Ford said:

“I think it’s a character I could easily play at this point if people were interested in seeing what happens to Jack Ryan as his life progresses,”
