Official Logo & Synopsis For Pixar’s ‘Monsters University’

Pixar’s Toy Story franchise was one of the rare movie series where the sequels were generally considered just as good (and, by many, better) than the original film. Hence why (for now) there’s reason to be hopeful about the animation company’s upcoming slate of non-original titles, including this summer’s Cars 2 and the in-development prequel to Monsters, Inc., Monsters University.

An official logo for the Monsters Inc. prequel has been unveiled (see above), and it features the all-too familiar “cyclops letter M” from the first film’s logo. Disney/Pixar has also released the official synopsis for Monsters University; however, those who have been following the project aren’t likely to learn anything new about the movie.

Disney News: ‘Monsters University’ Director; ‘Winnie the Pooh’ Gets Zooey Deschanel

Today’s batch of news concerns two upcoming animated titles from Walt Disney Pictures: Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. prequel, which was recently confirmed to be titled Monsters University, and this summer’s traditionally-animated Winnie the Pooh.

Disney has officially announced that Monsters University will be directed by Dan Scanlon, who previously worked as a story artist on Pixar films like Toy Story 3, and helmed the Cars-related short “Mater and the Ghostlight”. He’ll make his animated feature-length directorial debut with the Monsters Inc. prequel.

Word has also gotten out that actress/singer/songwriter Zooey Deschanel has recorded three songs for Disney’s upcoming Winnie the Pooh, including her own version of the original theme song for the bear of very little brain. Pixar Monsters, Inc. Prequel Titled ‘Monsters University’

Out of all of Pixar’s excellent films, Monsters, Inc. is definitely one of my favorites. The story was smart and original, the characters were well-acted and entertaining, and the script had tons of heart.

So, when word came out a while back that Pixar was planning a second Monsters, Inc. film, I was both excited and hesitant. I have the utmost confidence in Pixar to deliver high quality movies, and the company hit it out of the park with all three Toy Story movies, but there’s always a risk with sequels that the film will not live up to the original.

Then, rumors came out that the movie wouldn’t be a sequel, but rather a prequel focused on Mike and Sully’s college years – when they were bitter rivals training to be scarers for Monsters, ...

Circle 7′s Abandoned ‘Monsters, Inc.’ Sequel Trailer Hits the Web

It’s been 10 years since we’ve seen Mike, Sully, and the other hard-working scarers of Monsters, Inc. on the big screen, but rest assured Disney-Pixar is working hard to bring Monsters, Inc. 2 to fruition. But what will the movie be about?

So far, Pixar’s story plans for the sequel have been kept under wraps. In January we reported a rumor that Monsters, Inc. 2 may actually end up being a prequel about Mike and Sully’s college years, when they were bitter rivals. If Pixar did go that route, it could be a lot of fun…but, again, it was just a rumor.

Odds are we won’t learn anything about Monsters, Inc. 2 until Disney decides to tell us about it. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about the Monster’s, Inc. sequel ...

Will ‘Monsters, Inc. 2′ Be A Prequel?

To date, Pixar has done no wrong in my eyes and with a combined box office haul in the billions apparently the majority of the world agrees with me. Every time the studio announces a new project the worldwide consensus is that it will earn major dollars.

When Pixar announced their plans last year for Monsters, Inc. 2, many people where wondering if they could make a film entirely about monsters that make kids laugh. At the end of the first film, the monster society discovered they could produce more power from a child’s laugh than they could a scream – it was a great ending for the film but it didn’t feel like a strong enough motivator for a sequel.

SR Pick: Financial Success of Pixar Infographic

Infographics are the popular (and digestible) way to make statistics come to life, and this latest one (beautifully rendered by the good folks over at Know Your Money) is an infographic detailing the production budgets and earnings of all the Pixar animated movies that have been released to date.

From Toy Story 1 back in 1995 to Toy Story 3 (in theaters now), this infographic shows how much money went into making each Pixar hit and how much box office cash was ultimately returned on that investment.

One interesting note about the chart: because Know Your Money is based in the UK, the chart shows both the U.S. and UK box office earnings of each Pixar ...

Monsters, Inc. 2 Currently In Production?

Last summer we got word of Pixar possibly doing a Monsters Inc. 2. It was reported that at the 2009 Licensing International Expo, Pixar gave a preview session for all its upcoming features and one of those was Monsters, Inc 2. At the time it was explicitly noted that the studio hadn’t made any sort of official decision on a Monsters Inc. sequel.

Now we learn – via an exclusive scoop over at Latino Review – that not only is Pixar planning on making Monsters, Inc. 2 but that the movie is already in the production line for release in 2012-2013.

The info comes from what Latino Review calls a “very reliable source” but they remind us that to be on the safe side, we should file this under “RUMOR” until it’s confirmed either way.

Monsters, Inc. Sequel in the Works?

Flying high on the critical and box-office success of Disney/Pixar’s latest masterpiece, UP director Pete Docter could easily be forgiven for taking some time off to revel in his achievement. Of course, taking breaks has never been popular at Pixar, so it’s no surprise to hear that Docter is already back at work on an all-but confirmed sequel to Disney/Pixar’s 2001 film, Monsters, Inc.

Slash Film, working off of information from Jim Hill, recently reported that buyers attending the 2009 Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas were treated to a preview session of Disney/Pixar’s upcoming features, one of which was Pete Docter’s Monsters, Inc. 2. It is important to note that a sequel has yet to be confirmed by Pixar, so this report should still be taken as speculative, but it is exciting news ...
