‘Beetlejuice 2′ May Happen; ‘Monopoly’ Snags New Writers

There’s been talk about Beetlejuice 2 for many years now – and, thanks to a new deal struck between KatzSmith Productions (which is headed by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith) and Warner Bros., a sequel to the Tim Burton classic could actually start to move forward.

Speaking of still-theoretical projects that may have a future after all – Universal dropped Ridley Scott’s Monopoly board game adaptation a while ago, but the project is still alive and getting a rewrite by a new pair of successful scribers.

Monopoly remains the more likely movie to happen, though it will definitely be affected by the popularity of next year’s Battleship movie. The Beetlejuice followup, by comparison, looks to benefit from Grahame-Smith’s rising status (more on that ...

Hasbro CEO Gives ‘Monopoly’ Movie Update

In all the excitement surrounding Ridley’s Scott Alien prequel changing forms and morphing into a spinoff project titled Prometheus, it’s easy to forget that the filmmaker is still attached to bring Hasbro’s Monopoly board game to the big screen in the future.

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner recently provided an update on G.I. Joe 2 and now he’s spoken out about the Monopoly adaptation as well, assuring us that Scott is still actively involved in development of the project.

Golder spoke to MTV about Scott’s board game movie and had the following to offer:

“‘Monoploy’ is still happening, and we’re developing a great story. It’s a very fun take. Ridley is still the perfect creative steward, because he creates these great, fictionalized worlds. It’s going to be a very fun story to tell.”

As strange as it is to say, Ridley Scott’s movie adaptation of Monopoly actually sounds like a well-rounded movie. The director of the upcoming Robin Hood sat down with Coming Soon and shared some thoughts on the film he is attached to direct, bringing one of the most beloved Hasbro board games to life. The big question is how will they do it?

Both Scott and producer Frank Beddor have unique visions for the story, even as Pamela Pettler writes it. Considering the economic situation, it would appear the film may be taking a satirical focus if Scott gets his way. Game Movie Updates: Space Invaders & Monopoly

These days you should automatically expect news to come out that another toy, board game or video game is going to be getting the big-screen treatment. That continues today with the groan-worthy but nonetheless inevitable news that Hollywood is looking to adapt one of THE classic video games, Space Invaders.

Also, we have an update on the much talked about Monopoly movie which has Ridley Scott set to direct.

SPACE INVADERS

The news on the Space Invaders movie comes from the LA Times, so you can take it seriously (read: it’s not just a fan of the original game spreading a wishful rumor). Warner Bros. is apparently negotiating to acquire the rights to Space Invaders from the original Japanese manufacturer, Taito. If the deal works out, the project would be produced by Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady.

Last summer I beat my body up mentally, physically and emotionally to look into the future and make some predictions of what would be Hollywood’s next latest and greatest movie idea fads. I touched on Clothing, Appliances, School Supplies and even Mundane Everyday Activities to compile a list. I guess I was painting with too broad a brush though, because I failed to see the onslaught of toys and board games that Hollywood was interested in making into a movie (read: messing up).

Monopoly Movie Concept Revealed

Recently, Geoff Boucher from the LA Times had a chance to sit down with producer Frank Beddor (There’s Something About Mary), one of the minds behind the Monopoly concept, and Beddor gave readers the first ever look into what the story for the upcoming movie adaptation of Monopoly will be. What he said is not totally surprising: Beddor is working on a re-imagining of the Alice in Wonderland story called the Looking Glass Wars and he took that idea and applied it to Monopoly.

Candy Land, Monopoly, Battleship and Stretch Armstrong Updates

Well the 2009 summer movie season is over for Hasbro and it has been financially successful. Transformers 2 has milked the entire world economy of over $800 million dollars, while G.I. Joe managed to drain the globe of $100 million this past weekend. So what does that mean for Hasbro their future releases?

Well Steve “Frosty” Weintraub over at Collider managed to catch Brian Goldner, President and C.E.O of Hasbro, before a special screening of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and got some interesting answers about a few upcoming projects: Stretch Armstrong, Candy Land, Battleship and Monopoly.

Tired Of Remakes? The Next Trend: Movies Based On Board Games

I’ve been whining about the number of remakes and 3D movies that are coming out these days. My cry? Why oh why must we suffer this era of unorginality? Well, criminey… sometimes you just have to be careful what you ask for.

Despite the remake era, we’ve still had to suffer through many a computer game based movie and of course, now we’re seeing our toys coming to life and kicking our own butts.

Well, good news… sort of. OK, maybe not. Universal has signed up with Hasbro to bring some of their board games to life on the silver screen. Yeah. Oh goody.

More Toy-Based Movies On The Way

The blurring of merchandising and film continues with Mattel aggressively pursuing bringing a “Hot Wheels” movie to the big screen. I’m sure I don’t need to explain to anyone what Hot Wheels are – those cool little metal toy cars that (at least if you’re a guy) you’ve known and loved at some point in your life.

So with brand recognition that strong, how could they NOT make a movie about them, right? RIGHT?

Oh, it’s very early in the movie-making stage for this project… so early in fact they have NO idea which direction to go. It could be Mad Max (but for kids!), or maybe The Fast and the Furious (which was for kids trapped in adult bodies). Oh, and there are other toy-based projects all itching to get started:
