For the past couple of days the internet has been abuzz about the possibility of Katie Holmes joining Mission: Impossible IV. The website Monsters and Critics is citing a “source” that claims to have any and all information regarding Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Mission: Impossible IV villains. Although, I have a feeling that like Transformers, there’s more to meet the eye, so let’s take a look and see if we can’t debunk some of these rumors.

The site states that our favorite height-challenged thespian is “desperate to work with his wife” and since Cruise could (almost literally) pick any film and role for his wife to be a part of, his extensive film knowledge leads him to believe that “an evil part for her in the fourth film would be perfect.”

 src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Says the source:

“Tom is very excited about taking Mission: Impossible in a new direction and he sees Katie as a big part of that.

“They have wanted to work together for a while now but the idea of being a couple on screen in a romantic comedy is a bit dull. This might give them a chance to have some fun both as a couple and as hero and villainess.”

While there is no doubt in my mind that Tom Cruise could get Katie Holmes in Mission: Impossible IV if he really wanted, I don’t see someone like Cruise doing the whole nepotism type of thing – not now, anyway.

The past couple of films Tom Cruise has been part of (sans Tropic Thunder) have more than underperformed at the box office. Also, J.J. Abrams is now a part of the whole Mission: Impossible franchise (even though he’s not directing the next installment) and Abrams doesn’t play those types of games. He makes choices because the person is right for the part, not because of who they’re married two (although saying no to Cruise can be a hard task).

Also, reps for Katie Holmes have stated that this rumor is just that, and that there is no truth to it. While we don’t know if what they’re saying is true, I really hope so.

The villain for Mission Impossible III was the amazing Phillip Seymour Hoffman. If they follow up his performance with someone who was the co-star in the female romantic crime comedy Mad Money, I’ll eat my shirt and I don’t have many shirts.

Still, if the Cruise/Holmes camp are in the mood for nepotism, I’ve got a great idea for a film the Cruise couple could do, based on a classic television series:

“I don’t want to wait, for our lives to be over…”

What do you think about this rumor? Would you be interested in seeing an evil Katie Holmes? Would this make a good film? Have you ever been a spy who’s adversary was a woman who weighs 120lbs?

Let’s hear it! (Especially the spy part.)

Mission: Impossible IV is scheduled to be released in 2011.

J.J. Abrams, now one of the big guns in Hollywood, was integral in making Mission: Impossible III not only a success, but a good movie – something we needed after M:I:II.

Over the last year we’ve heard rumblings that Tom Cruise was planning the inevitable fourth installment. Shortly thereafter, it was reported that Cruise had asked Abrams to join him once again to make Mission: Impossible IV. With those two on board, the ball quickly started to roll and Abrams hired the writers in the summer to pen the screenplay.

The one thing we were still unsure of however, was whether or not Abrams would direct again.

The last update we heard from Abrams was from last month when spoke about Star Trek 2 and M:I IV – he said only this:

“It’s being written right now by Andre Nemec and Josh Applebaum… We’re hoping to get it soon, like by the end of the year.”

There was still no confirmation on whether or not Abrams would take the captain’s chair for the second time in the Mission: Impossible franchise. Fast forward to now where J.J. interviewed with MTV News and revealed that he’s probably not going to be directing.

“I’m producing with Tom… My guess is, given other things, that I will not be directing the movie.”

I liked Abrams’ take on M:I and while I’m a tad disappointed he won’t be directing, he will still be involved in the creative process. He’ll likely be busy with his other upcoming projects, not the least of which is Star Trek 2 which he may or may not direct so I’m interested to see who he and Tom Cruise pick to direct Mission: Impossible IV.

There's not much news on Star Trek 2 yet, but here's what we DO know so far...

Today we have some of J.J. Abrams news about two sequels from two big franchises: Star Trek and Mission: Impossible IV. The Star Trek news hints at what the sequel to Abrams’ successful Star Trek reboot might be about. And the M:I IV update is on the current status of the film, and whether Abrams will be directing or not.

STAR TREK

LA Times Hero Complex got a chance to catch up with Abrams and Trek co-writer, Roberto Orci, on the set of the second season of Fringe, and they naturally got around to asking about the next film in the now rebooted Trek franchise. The replies from both Abrams and Orci were very interesting and exciting. First, here’s what Abrams said:

While no story details have been revealed, it’s believed that the script will be based on a story treatment that Abrams wrote with the two screenwriters.

Abrams had this to say:

“I’ve been looking forward to working with Josh and Andre again for years. Their sense of balance between character and action is wonderful, which I know is hugely important to Tom as well. We’re off to an exciting start, so, as usual, fingers crossed.”

No director has yet been hired – it’s not believed that Abrams will be returning to helm, but if it follows the other films in the franchise it’ll probably go to a director who is something of an auteur. Although I think that I’m being a bit too kind to the Star Trek director by saying that.

The Mission: Impossible film franchise is based on a 1960’s television show created by Bruce Geller. The first film, released in 1996 was directed by Brian DePalma. A sequel by John Woo followed in 2000 and Abrams directed the third installment in 2006.

Following the release of Mission: Impossible 3, Cruise had a very public falling out with Paramount Pictures owner Sumner Redstone because of what Redstone called ”behavior unacceptable to Paramount”. The studio then failed to renegotiate Cruise’s longstanding production contract. Mission: Impossible 3 was seen as something of a box office disappointment – it grossed $397 million worldwide compared to the $457 million and $546 million of the first two films.

Following this it was believed that the studio might reboot the franchise with a younger cast or replace Cruise with another A-lister (Brad Pitt was noted at one point). However, earlier in the year it was reported that Cruise and Abrams were working on a new installment of the action franchise.

Keep your eyes on Screen Rant as we bring you more news on Mission Impossible 4.

So is Mission: Impossible 4 a good idea or would you just like to leave the series as a triple disc box set in your DVD collection?

Mission: Impossible 4 is scheduled to be released in 2011.

One of this year’s biggest names in Hollywood is getting a little bit bigger. Last month, we finally saw the release of Star Trek, the film that set out to rekindle the near-dead sci-fi franchise and succeeded beyond anyone’s imagination. The man responsible for this success is of course, J.J. Abrams.

If you follow film or television news in the slightest bit, then you know this man. On our TV sets, he brought us Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe and on the silver screen, he engineered movies such as Cloverfield, Mission: Impossible 3 and of course, Star Trek.

A god amongst the geek world, Abrams got his first gig as a feature film director directly from Tom Cruise. Cruise watched his show Alias on DVD and fell in love with it. That led to Tom asking J.J. to direct M:i:3 and it turned out very well for the both of them. The film helped erase some of the negatives many folks had with the prior installment and went over well amongst the critics.

Since that time, there’s been plenty of speculation about a Mission: Impossible 4. Back in March we heard a tidbit of information about another M:I where Cruise revealed that he was working out a story for another movie. All three movies made boatloads of cash at the box office and it’s a sure-fire way for Tom to star in blockbuster action flick that’s guaranteed to sell – it was only a matter of time till we saw more movement on this project.

Well, that time has come and we now know that J.J. Abrams will be back to help. However, his involvement as of this time will be of a different sort than that of the last movie. According to the latest issue of TV Guide, Cruise invited Abrams back to produce the next film. There’s no word yet on whether or not he will direct.

“I am incredibly honored that Tom has invited me back as a producer on Mission: Impossible 4… Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing.”

I’m sold. Call me biased but I enjoy all of Abrams’ work and I look forward to seeing another Mission: Impossible if he’s part of the creative team. J.J. has sure found himself nicely nested in some massive franchises with this, Trek having upcoming films and Fringe coming back for a second season.

Are you excited that we’re getting another Mission: Impossible and that J.J. will be a part of it?

Expect Ethan Hunt to kick some more ass in the summer of 2012.

A reader of Ain’t It Cool News sent in some information about Tom Cruise’s appearance on a popular Japanese television where he was asked about the Mission Impossible franchise. Cruise’s response was that he has started work on the fourth installment and they are planning the story for it.

He also mentioned that he was thinking about planning a big action sequence in Tokyo for the next film – What a coincidence because he was in Japan when he said it! I wonder if he made that up on the spot.

Personally, I’m happy they’re making another one. I enjoyed the first and third MI movies but was rather disappointed with the second. There’s no word on who’s directing the fourth as of yet. I wouldn’t mind seeing J.J. Abrams back but I have a feeling he’ll be busy on other projects.

I think it’ll be good for Tom Cruise to be in another big budget action blockbuster.

Are you excited for a fourth Mission Impossible?

The outdated IMDB page for Mission Impossible 4 shows an expected release some time in 2010 but no date has been officially set as of yet.
