Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: February 5th, 2012

The end of 2011 saw the box office in the doldrums, but things are now looking up, as this week saw both Chronicle and The Woman In Black open to more than $20 million each – much more than analysts predicted.

Science Fiction effort Chronicle was the champion, grossing an estimated $22 million. The low budget superhero film (read our review) has a reported production budget of just $12 million, meaning that it’ll be very profitable for 20th Century Fox.

Daniel Radcliffe’s attempt to have a movie career after the Harry Potter franchise got off to a good start, with The Woman In Black grossing an estimated $21 million. The Hammer Horror (read our review), is set to have the biggest opening ...

Liam Neeson’s The Grey topped the box office over the weekend, scoring an estimated $20 million. The Joe Carnahan man versus nature film has had solid reviews (read ours) and it again shows that Neeson is the go to guy for middle-age action.

The down side is that The Grey’s debut was less than the Irishman’s last action effort Unknown, which opened to $21.8 million, on its way to a final haul of $63 million. It was also less than Neeson and Carnahan’s The A-Team which started with $25 million and closed with $77 million in the summer of 2010. This R-rated flick still has potential and it could outgross the disappointing Unknown – if it holds.

The fourth instalment of the Underworld franchise, Underworld Awakening, topped the box office over the weekend after grossing an estimated $25.4 million. The Kate Beckinsale starrer is doing good business considering that the first installment in the series opened in 2003. That film grossed $21 million on its debut, for a $51 million final total.

Underworld: Evolution scored $26 million when it opened in 2006, on its way to a $62 million final tally. The third, a Beckinsale-free entry released in 2009, subtitled Rise of the Lycans, grossed $20 million during its first weekend and topped out at $45 million. Mark Wahlberg’s latest effort Contraband (co-starring Kate Beckinsale) topped the box office over the Martin Luther King weekend. The thriller should see out the four days with a great $30 million gross, or $24.1 million for three days.

Wahlberg is something of an inconsistent star, with audiences mainly going to see his action/thriller efforts (like Contraband), although Oscar winner, The Fighter, was something of an exception, grossing $93 million. In fact, Contraband (read our review) has had one of the best openings in Marky Mark’s movie career, with top honors going to Planet of the Apes ($68 million) and A Perfect Storm ($41 million), both of which went on to gross over $180 million domestically. Low budget schlock-fest The Devil Inside topped the box office chart over the weekend and scared up a frightening $34.5 million. The film was picked up by Paramount Pictures’ Insurge imprint for $1 million dollars, and it already turned a profit following its midnight showings. The Devil Inside combines two popular horror staples, the exorcism pic and the “found footage” film and this combination appears to be a winner for Paramount, who also have the Paranormal Activity franchise as a lucrative money maker.

The Devil Inside was given a heavy marketing push by Paramount, and it opened big despite poor reviews (read ours). Most horror films have a massive dip during their second weekend and this shouldn’t be any different, probably even more so, due to bad word of mouth about that ending.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol topped the charts again over the weekend, grossing an additional $31.2 million. The spy film now has a total of just over $134 million – just a smidgen more than Mission: Impossible 3’s final gross.

M:I4 has now become Cruise’s fifteenth $100+ grosser as a star (sixteen if you include his extended cameo in Tropic Thunder) and it again highlights his bankability; even his recent ‘flops’ Knight and Day and Valkyrie grossed $75 million and $83 million respectively.

This fourth instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise has also been a hit abroad, where it’s grossed almost $200, giving it a total gross of over $324 million. M:I3 topped out at $398 million in 2006, and this new effort will likely surpass that.

There’s a fine (and sometimes non-existent) line between what constitutes a great movie and a “favorite.” We all have films we absolutely love and re-watch over and over, imperfect though they may be; conversely, we may really admire and respect the quality of a widely-recognized “classic,” but it’s not the sort of flick we feel the need to see more than once or twice.

We’ve settled on a list of 10 movies released in 2011 that the Screen Rant staff not only admired, but flat-out enjoyed. Bear in mind, this isn’t synonymous with a “best of” list for films that hit theaters over the past year. These are simply the ones that we deemed our favorites.

Tom Cruise is back at the top of the box office. The diminutive superstar’s latest Mission: Impossible grossed $26 million from Friday to Sunday, giving the fourth film in the long running spy franchise a $58 million total. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol has grossed over $100 million worldwide and when all is said and done, the film will out gross 2006’s Mission: Impossible III both here and abroad. Mission: Accomplished.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was second banking an additional $17 million, upping the Robert Downey Jr. film’s total to over $76 million. The Sherlock sequel has now grossed over $100 million worldwide.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked brought in over $13 million. The family flick has now scored $50 million, a disappointing number considering the grosses for the previous installments, ...

‘Mission: Impossible 5′ Being Fast-Tracked by Paramount?

People might look back at the 2011 holiday movie season and claim that they knew Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol was going to be a big hit, but don’t be fooled by that 20/20 hindsight talk. With Tom Cruise finding it harder and harder to strike box office gold in recent years, a movie franchise that many claimed was past its prime, and a director (Brad Bird) whose previous achievements were in the realm of animation… needless to say, there were more than a few doubts hanging over the film.

Brad Bird had already helmed one of the best actioners of our time, The Incredibles, before he stepped into the director’s chair of his first live-action film. And what a live-action debut to make. A previously established franchise (based on a previously established franchise), elaborate set-pieces and an ambitious centerpiece action-sequence that features Tom Cruise scaling the tallest building in the world — the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

To add to the complexity of the shoot, nearly twenty-five minutes of the film were shot with 70mm IMAX cameras. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (read our review) topped the box office over the weekend grossing $40 million. It’s not a bad number – but it was less than the $62 million that the first film grossed in 2009. It could be Robert Downey Jr fatigue, as the star has been in six films since he made his “comeback” with Iron Man in 2008, and all of these (excluding maybe The Soloist) were heavily marketed, with the star being front and center in every campaign.

It might also be that audiences still appear to be apathetic to most big releases over the last few months, finding others ways to spend their hard earned cash. Time will tell if Holmes reaches the first film’s $209 million gross ($524 million worldwide), if it ...

‘Dark Knight Rises’ Prologue IMAX Screening Information

The news that the six-minute prologue to The Dark Knight Rises would be screened in front of select IMAX prints of the impending Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol first leaked out in late October 2011. While Warner Bros. confirmed that story a while back, the studio has only now unveiled the official list of IMAX theaters that will be showing the beginning of co-writer/director Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated Batman trilogy finale.

Many fans will likely be annoyed to learn that Warner Bros. is sticking to its original plan of releasing the Dark Knight Rises footage exclusively in 70 mm IMAX theaters; everyone who doesn’t live within close vicinity of one of those screens will just have to wait until Summer 2012 to glimpse the prologue in the big big screen format.

When your upcoming movie is sitting on uncertain ground – as Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol arguably is – sometimes you have to bring out the big guns in order to help bait those filmgoers swimming through the crowded sea of holiday season movies.

Well, the Paramount marketing team is indeed reaching for their big guns (again) with this latest Ghost Protocol clip, which features the two lovely ladies of the cast – Paula Patton (Mirrors) and Léa Seydoux (Inglourious Basterds) – engaged in a spy-on-spy catfight.

Just because we’re only a couple days away from the 2011 Thanksgiving holiday movie rush, doesn’t mean the Hollywood marketing machine is taking an early vacation. A healthy amount of promotional material and imagery from several upcoming releases has already been released this week.

Moviegoers are about to find out how much Jeremy Renner they can handle (onscreen) over the next twelve months. The actor is slated to appear in multiple blockbuster projects, including this winter’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, next spring’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, followed by Marvel’s The Avengers a couple months later, and then The Bourne Legacy in (late) summer 2012.

U.S. theaters will be crammed-full with anticipated sequels and literary adaptations throughout the last month of 2011. The marketing machines are in full effect at Columbia, Warner Bros, and Paramount this week, as each studio released new TV spots for their upcoming films: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

We have five videos in total, so feel free to pick your poison. Do you want to see Rooney Mara looking edgy, Robert Downey Jr. acting snide, or Tom Cruise flexing his action star muscles? It’s all here, and just in time for the holidays.

Each of these films opens next month, with Dragon Tattoo and Mission: Impossible actually facing off against each other at the box office on December 21st (Sherlock Holmes 2 opens earlier on December 6th).

This December Tom Cruise will bring IMF agent Ethan Hunt and his team of tech-savvy international super spies back into theaters with the fourth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Yesterday Paramount Pictures released a behind-the-scenes featurette on one of the most impressive stunts in the film — Tom Cruise in Dubai scaling Burj Khalifa, the side of the tallest building in the world.

Last week, we had the opportunity to attend a special IMAX screening of nearly nearly twenty minutes of Ghost Protocol, which included the full Burj Khalifa stunt. Today, the studio released the latest trailer for film. Watch the new trailer, and check out our thoughts on the footage as well.
