The overnight ratings numbers are in for the premieres of Dollhouse and Smallville and they’re not as rosy-looking as we’d like. Then again, it is Friday night and our favorite returning shows are up against some heavy hitters.

CBS dominated Friday night with their shoe-in season premiers of Ghost Whisperer and Medium. Both shows raked in over 8 1/2 million viewers.

Even the encore presentation of FlashForward dusted our favored shows by bringing in an additional 4.6 million viewers.

Dollhouse premiered with 2.56 million viewers and Smallville’s 8 o’clock showing reaped 2.5 mil viewers. Not great numbers for sure – especially when they don’t lead into or have decent lead-in shows.

Smallville is the lead-in for America’s Next Top Model’s encore airing. Two 1/2 hour comedies, Seinfeld and a new comedy, Brothers, are the lead-in for Dollhouse.

The usual practice is to have like-genre programming follow each other. This is how Smallville got shoved out of Thursday nights, in favor of Vampire Diaries being paired up with Supernatural. Or at least put Vampire Diaries in the same time slot that viewers have been tuning into on the network. Again, another desirable factor.

At least Smallville and Dollhouse aren’t up against each other… as if that mattered.

Dollhouse is up against Dateline NBC, Friday Night SmackDown and Medium.

Smallville is battling Law & Order, Ghost Whisperer and what looks like encore airings of FlashForward. (Not sure that’s the regular schedule.)

As far as I see, neither network is probably expecting anything solid out of the overnight numbers and I hope, neither Fox or The CW would be looking to use ratings as an excuse to do anything drastic.

We can only wait… and see.

Ghost Whisperer, Law & Order, Smallville, Dollhouse, Medium & Numb3rs are all returning tonight… and then we have the premiere of a FOX comedy with a retired football player?

Friday hasn’t been this popular for television since ABC was in its hay-day with TGIF and Boy Meets World (Feeny!). With seven hours of new and returning programming stuffed into a three hour block, you’re either going to have to make some tough decisions on what to watch, or be a DVR master.

Let’s take a look at tonight’s lineup.

What’s New?

8:00 PM

FOX - Brothers: “Pilot/House Rules & Anniversary”
(one hour special)

Mike Trainor seemingly has it all – he’s a good-looking, wealthy and recently retired NFL player living the high life in New York City. With one phone call from his mom, Adele, Mike’s life changes in an instant. He comes home to Houston to find that his brother Chill, whose life changed drastically after a car accident left him in a wheelchair, is struggling to keep his restaurant afloat and that his father’s memory is not as sharp as it used to be. When Adele reveals everyone’s secrets, the family decides it’s time for a fresh start.

Later, Mike’s date spends the night at his parents’ place propelling his mom, Adele, to set specific house rules for her very grown sons. As all the family members try to find their way living together again as adults, Mike and Chill are taken aback at their new assigned daily chores and strict limitations on overnight guests. Meanwhile, Coach forgets his and Adele’s anniversary and lands in the doghouse, forcing him to come up with a creative way to make it up to her.

I’m not really putting much faith in this show lasting the season. I don’t care if you were a fan of Michael Strahan on the Giants, there’s no way you can tell me this show looks great. The only thing that redeems it, IMHO, is Daryl Mitchell being part of the cast, but even then, he can’t hold the entire show on his own. If you’re interested in this, watch it now because I suspect it might be gone soon. Oh yeah… and thanks for the wonderful lead-in you’re giving Dollhouse, FOX.

What’s Returning?

If you’re not tempted by the former Giants’ comedy series on FOX, it’s a good thing the other networks have stepped up and premiered all your favorite Friday night primetime shows at once.

8:00 PM

CBS – Ghost Whisperer: “Birthday Presence”

Melinda gives birth to a baby boy who also has the gift of seeing spirits, but with one important difference which will have far-reaching consequences.

After Jay Mohr left this show to start his own sitcom, I’ve fallen behind in the whole Ghost Whisperer mythology. The fact that they believed Jamie Kennedy could replace Jay Mohr was ridiculous and now that Kennedy and Love Hewitt are dating, it means he’s not going to be gone any time soon. ‘Til that happens, I’ll take a pass.

NBC – Law & Order: “Memo from the Dark Side”

The body of a young war veteran is found in a parking garage and the murder is connected to a law professor who used to work for the Department of Justice.

For some reason, I’ve never been a fan of Law & Order. I don’t know why, I enjoy CSI and all the other procedurals. I guess back in the day when it was Law & Order or NYPD Blue, I was a Blue-man.

The CW – Smallville: “Savior”

Clark (Tom Welling) tells Jor-El he’s ready to start his training, but Jor-El sends him back to Metropolis to cut ties with Lois before he can begin. Chloe (Allison Mack) is shocked when Lois (Erica Durance) suddenly reappears after having been missing for weeks, but Lois has no recollection of vanishing into thin air with the Legion ring.

While investigating a monorail crash, Lois meets John Corben (guest star Brian Austin Green), a new reporter at The Daily Planet, with a negative attitude toward the Red-Blue Blur. Chloe begs Clark to use the Legion ring to go back in time to save Jimmy, but he refuses, driving a wedge into their friendship. Meanwhile, Oliver (Justin Hartley) continues down a dark road, and Zod (Callum Blue) arrives at the Luthor mansion.

Oh, I’m very excited for this. While I don’t enjoy Smallville as much as Supernatural, I’m still caught up in it. Even with Michael Rosenbaum leaving the show I’ve stayed a fan because I love Green Arrow and find his portrayal on the show extremely entertaining. Mix in Brian Austin Green guest staring and the addition of Callum Blue (Dead Like Me, Secret Diary of A Call Girl) to the cast and you have me sold. Keep an eye out later for a full write up and discussion of tonight’s episode. If interested, you can check out a sneak peek at tonight’s episode.

Actress Steph Song let it be known on her Twitter account yesterday that she will be playing the role of Roulette on the sixth episode of Smallville’s upcoming 9th season. In the DC Universe Roulette is a kick-ass madame of underground fighting tournaments, often using super heroes and/or villains as combatants.

Not sure how the character will be portrayed on Smallville, but I’ll sure tune in to find out!

The show returns on September 25th (that’s Friday now) @ 8/7c on the CW.

Fox would naturally do the gig in order to further promote her upcoming high school comedy/horror flick Jennifer’s Body, and has reportedly been prepping to bring the yuck-yuck by doing a digital short with Andy Samberg.

Medium

When NBC canceled Medium, CBS picked it up and that deserves a big thank you for the ratings king..

When I started seeing repeats of Medium on CBS from last season, I just thought they were building up to the new season they were going to air.

Apparently that’s a no-no because NBC still has exclusive rights to air the show until September. And now they want to be reimbursed for episodes aired.

Odd. My thought would be that if they dumped a show, why be concerned? I guess there’s more to the value of the show, even if they’ve dumped it.

You know what they say: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. In this case, a Medium treasure.

Source: Variety

.

The Late Show

The Late Show with David Letterman has been enjoying its longest ratings winning streak over The Tonight Show since 1995. Additionally, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson has also been gaining viewers.

Do you know why?

Because Conan has lost 2 million viewers compared to this same time last year when Jay Leno was helming the desk. Last year, Leno was pulling in 4.6 million viewers.

I never thought Conan was a good fit for the late night audience. Heck, as far as I’m concerned, his shtick was almost on par with Howard Stern and it never really drew me in.

Source: News-Leader

.

Speaking of Jay Leno

Some details are coming out about his new show, the show they say won’t be a talk show.

They’ll be having one, maybe two celebrity guests a night. Leno will also have a bigger set, some musical acts, occasional comedy bits and signature comedy bits that will lead straight into the news, with no commercials between the end of his show, and the upcoming news broadcast.

How odd… let’s laugh at something that leads right into the 11 p.m. news that will probably be talking about death, poor economic scenarios and what not. I’m not sure that’s the best approach.

At least Leno is realistic about his show. He doesn’t expect to beat the likes of CSI: Miami in ratings, but he does think he has a fighting chance when they go up against repeats.

Alphas is about a team of ordinary citizens who possess hyper-developed neurological abilities. Each person has a slightly special feature about them, but as a team, they combine to have extra-special skills. It’s to be written by Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand), Michael Karnow and BermanBraun Television.

For whatever reason, NBC and ABC passed on Alphas while Syfy, having the opportunity, jumped on this superhero genre show.

 In Plain Sight

USA renewed In Plain Sight for its third season. Along with this show, they’re also looking to renew Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

It’s been noted that with these 2 shows, plus Burn Notice and Royal Pains, the network picked up all the shows that were slated for renewal. In the industry that’s a pretty rare event, especially for a cable network!

Source: Hollywood Reporter

.

Medium

This new season of Medium, starring Patricia Arquette, will be paying tribute to Night of the Living Dead.

The tribute episode, which airs the night before Halloween, will have Arquette inserted into footage of the George Romero classic.

On a light note, keep in mind that Medium has moved to CBS after NBC didn’t renew the show.

In a joking fashion, executive producer Glenn Gordon Caron said that CBS has already aired more promos than NBC did in all 5 years the show aired on that network.

Other things coming up for Medium include storylines about how Allison’s brain tumor affects her abilities. Her oldest child Ariel will rebel while the youngest, Marie, (Marie is played by twins!) will come into her own.

Of course, now that Medium shares a network with Ghost Whisperer, fans keep wondering about a cross-over. So far, no one is saying yes, but it’s noted that if the right quality script were to cross everyone’s desk, well, who knows.

The new season of Ghost Whisperer will start with the birth of Melinda’s baby, and then will jump 5 years into the future.

The reason for this is that her child will have abilities a wee bit beyond Melinda’s and they can’t have an infant talking to ghosts!

CBS will be starting up a web series based on Ghost Whisperer, which will play parallel to the show.

Thrones Casting News

Jennifer Ehle has been cast for Thrones, HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy book, Game of Thrones. She’ll be playing Catelyn Stark, Ned Stark’s (Sean Bean) wife.

.

Futurama Voices To Stay

It was reported earlier that Comedy Central was looking to recast some of the voice power behind the Futurama characters.

No need to fret folks: The original cast of John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Maurice LaMarche and Tress MacNeille have all signed on the dotted line with 20th Century Fox TV to reprise their roles.

Thank god. The show would not have been the same without them.

Chuck Air Dates

Despite announcements at Comic-Con, Chuck is not coming back any sooner than next spring.

NBC’s primetime president Angela Bromstad, said that Chuck’s reported early airing dates have been a bit optimistic and that the season 3 run of 13 episodes will start in March.

On an odd yet good note, NBC may extend the episode orders to let the show run into summer season. They haven’t decided yet, but if they did that it would give NBC and Chuck some great exposure since summer is the weak time of year for most networks and programming.

It would be daring, but I think it would be a good move.

Observations

As you can see, the fan-driven efforts to save Chuck appear to have worked. The Jay Leno Show pretty much wiped the 10 p.m. slot for the week. I sure hope it was worth it to NBC, alienating the fans of the shows that were in that time slot.

A nice bit to note is that reality shows will not make up the bulk of NBC’s programming. And aside from The Celebrity Apprentice, The Biggest Loser does send a fantastic message and teaches the viewer about great dietary practices. Practices I really need to work on myself.

As for MIA shows on the schedule you’ll notice that the following have been canceled:

Kath & Kim,

Life,

Lipstick Jungle,

Medium,

My Name Is Earl

Yes, Medium and My Name Is Earl are MIA on the NBC schedule but don’t attack the messenger! Personally, I found Life a fascinating take on the zen of police work, but that’s just me. Bummer.

NO PROMISES, but rumor on the street says Medium will probably move to CBS (the network already produces it) and My Name is Earl will probably get picked up by Fox or ABC. I think Earl would fit in good with the Fox shows, but then they’d probably just move it to Friday. (Dang, the Joss Whedon fan in me just can’t let go of this Dollhouse fiasco. Sorry.)
