Personally I’m just happy that I didn’t see most of the movies on this list. The Happening caught me off guard, though; if I could get my time and money back for that one, I would. And poor Uwe Boll–The Razzies are really raking him over the coals, creating a special category just to highlight his failures.

On a side note, I’m glad to see that the debacle that was Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull is also getting the recognition it deserves: as a steaming pile of…well, you know.

Is Max Payne finally the first video game to movie adaptation that actually works? We'll tell you.

Short version: Max Payne starts out promising but eventually begins to unravel, only to end in an awful mess.

Screen Rant reviews Max Payne

Mark Wahlberg plays Max Payne, a cop who’s wife and child were murdered and who subsequently becomes an obsessed outcast in the police department. Eventually he teams up with Mona Sax (played by Mila Kunis) in a quest to track down the killer.

Caveat: I know nothing about the video game. Not only have I never played it, I’ve never seen so much as a screen grab from it. So, I can’t speak to the authenticity of the movie in regards to the character and/or plot line of the game.

The movie opens with what we’ve seen in the trailer: Max floating underwater, apparently unconscious. We are then kicked back to “One Week Earlier,” indicated in the current fad of making on-screen text look like it’s part of the actual scene. We soon meet Max, a somber and unsociable guy who has been downgraded to the Cold Case department at the local police precinct.

His wife and child were murdered three years ago and he’s been on an off-duty quest to find one of the killers. Soon we get a taste of his search as he gives three drug addicts in the subway an invitation to mug him, and in a pretty damned cool scene he puts them down very easily.

Soon thereafter at a party thrown by one of Payne’s snitches he meets Natasha, a super-sexy hottie played by Olga Kurylenko. I’ll give you one guess as to her nationality based on that tricky name. Her sister Mona appears at the party and there is some conflict between them that is not clear.

In the meantime there is an addictive drug that is taken orally which seems will be a focal point of the movie. At first it is quite confusing why anyone would even take this drug because it causes terrifying hallucinations in the form of winged creatures.

One thing leads to another and Max ends up teaming up with Mona and the trail leads them to a mysterious bald, shirtless guy who carries a VERY big knife and knows how to use it (much to the chagrin of his victims).

One of the only people on Max’s side is B.B. Hensley (played by Beau Bridges), an ex-cop now head of security at the same pharmaceutical company that Max’s wife worked for.

So what’s good… I’d say in the first third of the movie, everything was pretty good. Wahlberg, while not great, certainly redeems himself from his performance in The Happening. Then again, how hard can it be to play somber and morose. Beau Bridges – just love the guy no matter what he does. He just has a great way about him that’s a pleasure to watch. Olga Kurylenko, well… let’s just say she’s really easy on the eyes.

The story and action are pretty solid at the start of the film as well.

So what’s not so good… well, as the film moves on it gets pretty ridiculous, and for some reason even the action scenes suffer. Director John Moore makes use of slow motion in a couple of scenes, and in one particular scene it’s not just slo-mo – it’s super-excruciatingly-painful slo-mo. I mean seriously, I might have had time to take a bathroom break and still return in time to see the scene (which in real-time would have taken two seconds) end.

The film gets more bizarre as it goes on (which for all I know is how the game progresses) and gets harder to believe. By the end with visions of fiery skies, circling winged-demons and lame dialog (among other things), I was ready to get the heck out of the theater.

I gave it 2 1/2 stars only because of the early part of the movie, and that overall it does look cool – but that doesn’t make up for the rest.

Keep in mind that Max Payne is barely PG-13, with sexual imagery and tons of pretty nasty violence missing only the blood which would have made it R.

Two movies that follow angry men with guns each have their own new websites up this week: Punisher: War Zone and Max Payne.

PunisherWarZoneMovie.com

The first, Punisher: War Zone, is entirely made in Flash and it looks and animates as if it were straight from a video game. Because it is Flash intensive, it takes a little while to load at first, even on broadband.

My first impressions are that it’s simply really cool. It runs very smoothly and the effects and graphics are extremely professional and stylistic, matching the tone of the film (from what we’ve seen in the trailers). The cursor is a gun sight and like the other animation on the site is very smooth as well.

The website features the usual plethora of filmed-based sections including information on the film, a photo gallery and some downloadable goodies. Some parts parts of the site like ‘cast and crew’ are not yet complete and are marked with ‘coming soon’ when you hover or click them.

The site definitely does the film justice and the best part is that there is no out-of-place thrash-metal music! For years I was looking down on this film simply because of Tom Jane being separated from the franchise, but upon seeing Ray Stevenson and his incredible performances in Rome and The Outpost – I am 150% on board for this. Especially after seeing the pictures of him in the role and even moreso now that everything has settled down on the rumour and gossip front.

MaxPayneTheMovie.com

The Max Payne website opens with a page featuring the more recent of its trailers with a button to enter the real site.

Upon entering the actual website, we’re again met with a loading screen for another Flash-intensive site. The site is crazy professional like the Punisher site and although it’s easier on the eyes, the animations are a lot choppier.

The Max Payne site also offers several photos, some concept art, some downloadable content and a little information about the movie. And again like the Punisher site, one of the sections (the features) is not yet up and is marked with ‘coming soon’.

One really cool feature is the Graphic Novel section which takes you through a few scenes from the film with a neat little conversion to comic animation.

Max Payne stars Mark Walhberg and Mila Kunis and is based on the popular video game franchise made famous by its bullet-time features.

If you’re a fan of the Punisher comics or the Max Payne games, or are just looking forward to the movies – definitely check these sites out.

Max Payne opens October 17th and Punisher: War Zone on December 5th.

Yet another film that was razor-thin edited down from an R to a "just barely" PG-13

However, it looks as though Warner Bros. is going for the big $tacks this October when Max Payne comes out. Trailers for the film have shown that it’s none too short on bullets and mayhem; hmmm… you think the studio cashed in a favor with the MPAA to get Max Payne the rating they wanted?

Now the theater doors are wide open to all the teenage boys who have memorized the Max Payne video games line for line; the 18-40 boys club that loves a good shoot-em-up flick; girls who love to gaze at Mark Wahlberg for two hours; and the unfortunate ladies who get dragged along to the theater by their man.

That should just about cover all four quadrants. Smart move 20th Century Fox, smart move.

The best part of this whole Max Payne rating is that the director, John Moore (Flight Of The Phoenix), thinks that he and his loyal league of Internet cronies actually had something to do with “winning” a PG-13 rating for Payne. From an interview with Das Gamer before the rating came out he lamented how difficult it would be to cut down the film to achieve the coveted PG-13:

Das Gamer: How challenging has it been to get a PG-13 rating for Max Payne?

John Moore: It continues to be a challenge. We’re right in the middle of it now. We’re suffering from what I call Batman blowback. The Motion Picture Association of America gave The Dark Knight a PG-13 rating and basically sucked Warner Bros. [EXPLETIVE]. I have a serious amount of issues with the MPAA… Go to their website and read their charter about what gives a fair and balanced view for typical parents. We’re still strangled by an association that’s straight out of the House Un-American Activities Committee.

But suddenly, after the rating came out it turns out it was a piece of cake:

…I didn’t have to change much. We trimmed some frames more for the sake of trimming frames than anything, but we got the rating without any major changes at all. I’m a little surprised that we changed their minds, effectively, but I’m happy about it. It proves that if you stick to your guns and you have the creative, and dare I say moral sense, that you’re in the right, that you can get the right thing done.

Oh yeah, Johnny, That’s it. Just “stick to your guns” and you can bend those fools over at the MPAA! Yeah man! Hell yeah!

Hollywood exasperates me

So here we have yet another case of a film that is barely PG-13 and probably should have been an “R.” Whatever the case, Max Payne now has its PG-13 rating, so teens and ‘tweeners with facial hair rejoice. For the rest of you, have a look at the latest Max Payne trailer here to see if the film is up your alley. And be sure to bring your high school ID to the theater with you on October 17, 2008; you don’t want to have a problem getting in.

If you’re keeping track, or looking for any tidbits, the much anticipated translation of the Ubisoft game, Prince of Persia, has reportedly started filming on the 16th of September.

As we’ve noted previously, Jake Gyllenhaal of Brokeback Mountain fame, stars in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.
The project is an effort between Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films and is slated for a 2010 release. It’s about a prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from doing some evil deeds.

So why am I not jazzed about the upcoming new video game-to-movie effort?

At the moment it seems to me that Prince of Persia has some serious industry backing with Disney and Bruckheimer. This combination alone gives me the sense that it has potential.

But what tempers my anticipation for Prince of Persia are the writers.

Carlo Bernard: Very limited experience of writing credits.

Jordan Mechner: Limited experience in writing credits, and most of them are related to video games.

Doug Miro: Three credits: One of them is Prince…, another is still to be released.

Boaz Yakin: Boaz has the most experience, and a few flicks I’ve actually heard of. Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, From Dusk Till Dawn 2. Hmm… vampires and dancing. That should mix well with Persian prince politics. (I said “heard of”… I missed these two fine literary contributions to the annals of film.)

Besides filming having commenced, the only other news that’s come out of the project is about the new 22-year-old Bond girl, Gemma Arterton, moving in with the 19-year-old stuntman Eduardo Munoz, who was hired to teach her to ride horses for Prince. They said horses Eduardo. Horses! It must be chemistry because he’s already moved in with Gemma and she hired a translator to teach them each others language so they can understand each other… verbally. Kids. Sheesh. I give it till he end of filming, at best. Maybe they’ll learn enough vile language to learn how to break up properly.

The only salvation that keeps my eye in this direction is the director, Mike Newell. Newell has a history of success behind him, including putting the fantasy genre to screen. (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) But he just may have his job cut out for him.

How Many Video Games Must We Suffer Through?

I have to confess that with my digital, 5-speaker surround sound computer system I like gaming. When I’m pinned by two armored vehicles and only 2 rockets and a couple of satchel charges to my digital name, it’s fun. Or when I’m driving my NASCAR simulator, the place shakes, windows rattle and the animals run for their lives in my place – hehe. But my motivation, my story is to destroy the other guy and not be destroyed or just move that other car… who cares what happens or why. Just go go go. My first online win came from a move sort of like that. Hehehe.

The aspect I ponder is how video games translate as a story into a movie? What’s my motivation? It’s a single emotion, maybe two. Escape some of my daily woes, destroy the enemy. But yet, on that premise alone, it seems that many games have been made into movies.

Many game-to-movie efforts have floundered, heck there were many I didn’t even know were translated to movies. Sometimes it seems that they hire actors who look like the game characters, hand them props from the game and thell them to run that way, and pull the trigger. Go go go!! That’s a wrap! Now jump through the window. That’s a wrap! If he survives, we’ll have him jump over a car! Dialog… Oh yeah… forgot that. Propmaster!!?? What do you think he might say here?

At the front of my brain is Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson in the translation of one of my old favorite first-person shooters, Doom! Despite the fact that I tend to gravitate to action oriented, lead splaying movies that just make me feel better after a rough day, it was just OK. Even I need some story behind the bullet distribution patterns.

The video game-to-movie rendition I’ve enjoyed was Resident Evil. I never played the game. I was too busy with Doom and all the add-ons, add-ins and add-to’s, but I liked the premise of Resident Evil, not to mention really enjoying watching Milla Jonovich kick butt.

Speaking of watching, I think when you “cross a Playboy Bunny with Bruce Wayne” archeologist type character in the Lara Croft films with Angelina Jolie, and add semi-Ok writing, it’s bound to be a hit and is one of my perennial favorites on the tube as repeats when nothing else is competing for my writers eye. (I hope my wife isn’t reading this.)

A lot of the time I can’t imagine trying to create a story out of a first person shooter that is a compelling tale to tell. To further complicate the situation is not committing the money and nabbing up-and-coming actors that may not have the draw of big names. The one flick I am not even holding my breath on is Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li starring Smallville’s Kristen Kreuk. Without a Clark to pine about, what will she do? Oh… did I just say that?

One movie that I think has a lot of anticipation is Max Payne. It stars Mark Wahlberg, and written by Shawn Ryan, whose latest endeavor includes The Shield. This flick is due to come out October 17th. The previews look like it doesn’t suck and it’s got me interested, unlike most previews of game-to-movies previews.

Yes, I’ve left out a lot of game-to-movie names. And there are a lot. So like I said, or recommend to the game / movie makers: If you don’t have the bucks, and can’t hire the big names, maybe it would be best if you just waited a bit to get the mula. I’d rather have a movie I’ve made to have a lasting impression than something that only gets remembered because it’s added to a list somewhere.

Just ask Bruce. He’ll tell ya’ like he sees it.

DISCLAIMER: When I say I enjoyed a game-to-movie translation, I did not say it was a fantastic, earth shattering story captivating movie. I just enjoy it for what it is. I thought I’d say that before you started slamming me for calling something good. It is good for the moment. Kind a’ like candy or beer.

There’s a brand new (and probably final) trailer out for Max Payne starring Mark Wahlberg. It’s very cool looking and stylish, but neither of the trailers we’ve seen so far give us too much of what the actual movie will be like when it’s not in slo-mo with things flying through the air.

I’ll say again I have zero familiarity with the video game this movie is based on – and so far video game to movie transitions have not been very good (to put it mildly). Just based on the trailer, this big screen version of Max Payne looks interesting. Then again, Hitman looked pretty good in its trailers, didn’t it?

Also, a couple of days ago Wahlberg was talking to the folks over at MTV and had this to say:

“This is like my character from ‘The Departed,’ ‘Fear,’ ‘Four Brothers,’ all mixed into one, times ten… it’s one thing to play a quiet guy, one of few words. That’s not what Max Payne is. This guy raises his voice; he’s in your face. He’s screaming, crying, laughing. It’s the most fun I’ve had playing a part.”

I don’t know about you, but I get nervous when I hear an actor say how much fun he had playing a part. Too much fun on the set usually equals not too much fun for the audience… but based on other comments Mark seems to be very happy with the way this one turned out and is overjoyed to be back playing the “badass” after the wimpy role he had in the abysmal film The Happening.

One drawback to Max Payne is that it’s being released by Fox Studios, which is NOT a fan favorite at the moment due to its Watchmen lawsuit against Warner Bros. They also haven’t had a single hit all summer AND screwed up Babylon A.D. according to its director.

Way to go, Fox!

Anyway, have a look at the latest trailer for yourself:

You can see the trailer in higher res at Yahoo! Movies.

I don’t know… it looks good to me, but looks can be deceiving. What do you think?

Max Payne opens on October 17th.

For the Fox panel Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connolly and director Scott Derrickson are on hand to talk about The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Derrickson directed the most excellent Emily Rose. He touched on the concerns over remaking a classic film and how much he enjoys and respects the original. He thinks it’s a good idea to revisit the concept using modern day issues.

They will be showing a few clips.

The scene was an extended version of the interrogation shown in the trailer. This version of Klaatu is not docile and non-violent – in the scene he takes over the interrogator, delivering an electrical shock and controls his mind in order to get info so he can escape.

Keanu stated that his take on the role was to be an objective observer as the alien.

Derrickson says that the alien technology is biological and he didn’t want spacecraft shooting lasers.

Jennifer talked about the human elements of the story and how we treat each other and the planet.

Another clip shown which shows the boy, Bobby and Klaatu having a conversation in the back of a pickup truck.

Keanu talked about how his opinion of humanity evolves during the film to where he starts to think that maybe we’re not so bad.

(Side note: The only reason that I’m starting to think there might be a glimmer of hope for this film is that I like the director and his work on Emily Rose.)

Derrickson talked about the design of Gort and that they went through hundreds of different drawings in trying to figure out how to update the robot for the film and they ended up coming back to a design similar to the original. Weta Workshop is working on the design of the character.

The spaceship and the spacesuit have an organic / biological basis.

Biggest clip to follow, several minutes of footage.

Clip showed a lot of destruction by Klaatu’s ship(s) and I still don’t like that take on the film. The clip also showed the scene with the idiotic line where the survival of the planet is more important than humanity.

Next a scene from Max Payne that was pretty cool was shown highlight Payne getting his butt kicked before the shoots whoever is kicking his butt in an inventive way.

John Moore director, Mila Kunis, Mark Whalberg and Chris Bridges were in attendance.

The director said the challenge in making the film was “to not screw it up.” He said the game has a great story and the goal is to translate that story to a great movie.

Wahlberg saw the script before he saw the game. He was quite charming and said he was ready to do another film where he could “kick some ass again.”

Joked about how his arrest record made him a good fit for the role.

The character starts out happy with a wife and child that are taken away from him.

Another clip, highlighting the bad-assness of Wahlberg taking on a group of street punks. Forget what I said previously about concerns Wahlberg could pull this off after seeing him in The Happening. I got a modern Death Wish vibe from the clip.

They talked about a new slow motion camera system that they used, inspired by The Matrix and John Woo.

Finished up with a long clip that should a lot of action sequences from the film. Really, parts of reminded me of the first Die Hard movie – and that’s a good thing. Of course there was much more beyond that with gunfire out the wazoo, and lots of cool imagery.

Wolverine

Hugh Jackman came out and the crowd went insane. He was very gracious and said he’d be waiting a long time to bring Wolverine to Comic-Con since he didn’t have the opportunity with any of the X-Men movies. He thanked the crowd profusely saying he wouldn’t have a career if it wasn’t for us, and also came in to the audience to thank Len Wein, the creator of the character. Jackman had

He said the’ve finished filming, the film is big, action-packed and “bad-ass.”

There will be a lot of berserker rage in the film.

They showed an extended trailer for the film which I have to say was pretty damned awesome and the crowd went nuts. Gambit and Deadpool are in the film, shows Wolverine as a soldier with a bad attitude, Stryker recruiting him and Sabretooth to work for the government, we see Blob, lots of mutant action, big set pieces with explosions and all kinds of cool crazy stuff. The buzz on this has been that it’s not going to be good but you certainly couldn’t tell that from the trailer that was shown.

And that’s it for the Fox presentation!

As far as the Keanu-starring TDTESS remake, the panel for his film will be starting in an hour. At this point I’m still looking at it with a heavily skeptical eye and my gut reaction is that I think it’s going to be awful. But at least the posters are cool, with one giving us a definite look at the robot Gort.

The Max Payne posters are both extremely cool looking as well. You can click on the images to see bigger versions at Dark Horizons.

I’m not a video game guy (believe it or not) so when a movie is being produced based on a game I come to the table “clean,” with no preconceived notions. Well… other than assuming that the movie will be awful, as seems to be the case pretty much without exception when it comes to movies based on video games.

So to me, this trailer for the upcoming movie Max Payne, looks pretty cool. Now as I pointed out in my Wanted review, it takes more than “cool” to make a decent movie. Generally Wahlberg brings a lot of intensity to a role, so this one may be custom made for him. Let’s just hope this film isn’t all look and no substance.

Here’s the plot synopsis:

“Coming together to solve a series of murders in New York City are a DEA agent (Wahlberg) whose family was slain as part of a conspiracy and an assassin (Kunis) out to avenge her sister’s death. The duo will be hunted by the police, the mob, and a ruthless corporation.”

Anyway, check out the trailer right here:

So what do you think? Are you familiar with the video game the film is based on? If so, sound off and let us know what you think.

I wasn’t even aware this movie was coming out this year… the release date is set for October 17th.
