It’s an exciting time for movie buffs who also happen to be gamers. Yes, the vast majority of video game adaptations have not been great, but the tide is about to turn and what we know as a film genre full of disappointments will soon become the home to a plethora of blockbuster franchises based on high profile, story-driven video games that developers are aiming to protect.

Standing alongside highly anticipated in-development movies based on the likes of Assassin’s Creed, Uncharted and others is of course, Mass Effect. The story, characters and cinimatic style of the Mass Effect games themselves had us sold, but then came the Legendary Pictures panel at this summer’s Comic-Con which promised great things.

It’s day two of Comi-Con International 2011 and Screen Rant – on little to no sleep or food – is invading the panel scene on the film side of this year’s big event. Today marks the first ever time Legendary Pictures hosts a panel for their own upcoming projects and they’re kicking it off with a presentation covering Pacific Rim, Seventh Son, Paradise Lost and last but certainly not least, Mass Effect.

Confirmed panelists include Jeff Bridges, Bradley Cooper, Guillermo del Toro, Ben Barnes, Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Alicia Vikander, Alex Proyas, Sergei Bodrov, Travis Beacham, Mark Protosevich and Casey Hudson.

The 2011 San Diego Comic-Con International is just about here, which means that we (and a few of you readers) need to start plotting our itineraries and map routes that will help navigate the mad halls of the San Diego Convention Center in time to make all of those highly-anticipated panels.

This post will detail the movie-related panels that will held at Comic-Con ’11. You can find schedules for any of the TV-related panels over on our official Comic-Con ’11 Coverage Page.

The panels posted below are ones we’ll be scrambling to attend. Most of them are of course related to movies, but there is always room for some comic-related stuff too – after all, comics and movies are like close cousins these days .

We are less than two weeks away from that big event in San Diego, the one with the superhero costumes, endless lines of people and yes, major film and television news to go with all of the comic book goodness that is Comic-Con International.

While there was some back and forth about Marvel Studios’ presence at the convention, recent insider info confirms The Avengers showing up in some capacity. We can now also add Legendary Pictures to the guest list who are bring their first ever full film panel to the annual event. On tap for their presentation are four films: Pacific Rim, The Seventh Son, Paradise Lost and the big budget video game adaptation, Mass Effect.

Hollywood has a hard time making great video game movies & we know why: They're picking the wrong games. Here are our suggestions for some ridiculous game to movie prospects.

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. – Albert Einstein

Mr. Einstein could have very well been talking about Hollywood and all of the video game movies turds it has squeezed out in the past 27 years. Some people incorrectly think the wretched Super Mario Brothers kicked off the video game movie trend in 1993 but actually it started way back in 1984 with the thriller Cloak & Dagger, based off the Atari game, starring a young Henry Thomas (E.T.) and Dabney Coleman.

Regardless of which year we start from, there have been dozens of movies made from video games and, although some have come close (Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider), NONE have actually been good. There have been some financially successful video game films but a large box office draw ...

Click to continue reading 1001 Ridiculous (but Possible) Upcoming Video Game Movies

Legendary Pictures has optioned the film rights to Mass Effect, the hit sci-fi game by Electronic Arts and BioWare. Can this movie break the trend of poorly conceived videogame adaptations?

Way back in September of 2008, Avi Arad, ex-CEO of Marvel studios, optioned the movie rights to the 2007 hit game Mass Effect. Being one of my all-time favorite games, I was both happy and concerned.

Mass Effect told a wonderful story, in a brand new and original sci-fi universe with lovable and well thought-out characters. The way the game was presented, notably during conversations and cutscenes, was very cinematic with a clear emphasis on showcasing the beautifully rendered graphics and character animations as if it were a film.

This would definitely make for one amazing film franchise, except for the fact that all video game movies suck. Legendary Pictures looks to change that by optioning the rights to EA and BioWare’s Mass Effect, with Warner Bros. set to distribute the film. They’re already looking at a ...

Click to continue reading Legendary Pictures To Bring Us Mass Effect Movie

With one of this year’s biggest video game releases in Mass Effect 2 finally debuting today to amazing reviews and fan reception, there’s no doubt a burning interest for getting a feature film made from this property as soon as possible.

What’s the hitch? Well, video game movies suck and Hollywood tends not to respect the source material enough to bring it to the silver screen properly. We’ve seen this again and again but we know this trend is coming to an end sooner or later. As we enjoy the peak of the comic book movie era, the next genre to hit it big will be video game movies. With practically every single major video game having sold film rights to their properties, we will see every video game come to cinematic life eventually.

The good news ...

Click to continue reading Rising Interest for ‘Mass Effect’ Movie

Avi Arad, ex-CEO of Marvel studios, has optioned the movie rights to the 2007 hit game Mass Effect. Mass Effect was developed by Bioware, creators of the super-successful Knights of the Old Republic (the best Star Wars game ever on the consoles). It is published by video game powerhouse Electronic Arts (EA) and was released exclusively on the Xbox 360 console and later the PC in 2007.

Avi Arad made it big when Marvel Comics went bankrupt in the mid-nineties. Toy Biz, which he helmed at the time, acquired the company in a sloppy mess of a merger/acquisition. He was instrumental in pulling Marvel out of bankruptcy and expanding the company into the film industry.
