Last year we reported on the fact that Dreamworks had acquired the rights to make a Martin Luther King Jr. biopic, which is set to be produced by Steven Spielberg, Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones and is said to be a dream project for the trio. The last we heard about the MLK biopic, there was some trouble behind-the-scenes with regards to King’s children, Dexter, Bernice and Martin Luther King III, who were fighting over rights.

However, today we get news by way of Variety (thanks to The Playlist) that a screenwriter in the form of Ronald Harwood has been brought on board to pen the script for the film. This probably means that the trouble with King’s children has been worked out as Dreamworks, Spielberg and Co. have full access ...

Click to continue reading Martin Luther King Jr. Biopic Snags Writer

A couple of days ago Screen Rant reported on the rights being acquired to make a biopic about the life of the late Martin Luther King Jr. It is set to be produced by Steven Spielberg, Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones, and is said to be, “a dream project,” for them. But it never seems to go smoothly with these sorts of things – as it turns out, there is some legal bickering going on between the three children of King which was only furthered by the acquiring of the rights to make the biopic about their father.

It appears that Dexter King was the one who negotiated the deal with Dreamworks, but did not think to include his brother Martin Luther King III or sister Bernice King. They apparently only heard about the deal ...

Click to continue reading Family Trouble Over Martin Luther King Jr. Biopic

Martin Luther King Jr. should, and does get talked about in the same way as people like Gandhi, Malcolm X and Nelson Mandela. He’s a legendary figure, still remembered with fondness and admiration 41 years after his shocking assassination back in 1968. Following in the footsteps of the upcoming Frank Sinatra biopic, Hollywood is making a biopic about Martin Luther King Jr., with none other than Steven Spielberg attached to produce.

This is the first time permission has been given by King’s estate to make a movie about him. Universal and producers Spielberg, Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones, obtained the rights to use the material, from King’s books to his famous “I Have A Dream“ speech. Apparently, this King biopic has been a long-time dream for Spielberg, along with Dreamworks CEO and co-chairman Stacey Snider, ...

Click to continue reading Steven Spielberg Producing Martin Luther King Jr. Biopic
