After Magic Mike became one of the biggest surprise hits of 2012, there was seemingly instant talk of a Magic Mike 2. While the first film was charming, funny and sensitive, for many, its premise seemed more suited to a standalone story.

However, in a recent interview, director Steven Soderbergh talked about the sequel’s progress and noted that the filmmakers still have plenty of fresh material to work with.

While talking with Pride Source earlier this week, Soderbergh – who is still set to take a break from directing - said that he has been lending a helping hand in developing Magic Mike 2, which is fraught with story ideas based on Channing Tatum’s real-life experiences as an exotic dancer that Soderbergh couldn’t fit into the first film.

The year 2012 saw over 250 movies make their way into the cineplexes worldwide, and starring in those films were thousands of characters in all shapes, sizes, creeds and species.

Ninety-five percent of those characters turn out to be forgettable, remembered only in the credits as “Woman crossing the street” – and thus end up fading into obscurity. However, the other five percent are so impressive either because of the performance by the actor portraying them or their overall visual appearance that audiences can’t help but remember them for a long time.

With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of what we think are the Most Memorable Movie Characters of 2012.

We’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: you don’t have to like Channing Tatum as an actor, but through his charismatic performances in The Vow, 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike – not to mention, Tatum’s solid supporting role in Haywire – he’s already proven to be more than just a disposable pretty boy.

Tatum’s lined up an eclectic collection of roles for the foreseeable future, such as a reunion with Haywire and Magic Mike director Steven Soderbergh on The Bitter Pill, the part of Olympian Mark Schultz in Moneyball director Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher, and the lead in Roland Emmerich’s thriller White House Down. He’s also been discussing the possibility of a Magic Mike 2 with writer/co-producer Reid Carolin – and could even end up directing the sequel, should it happen.

The Dark Knight Rises looks set to retain its grip at the top of the US box office. The Christian Bale Batman film should bank $36.4 million over the weekend for a $354 million total haul.

The Christopher Nolan directed Bat-pic has now scored over $733 million globally – with more yet to come. At this stage it looks like it might top out at around $400 million domestic – a fantastic number, but short of The Dark Knight’s $533 million domestic take.

Director Len Wiseman’s remake of Paul Verhoeven’s Total Recall (read our review) has had a modest debut. The Colin Farrell actioner looks set to shoot-up around $26 million over the weekend. It won’t hit $100 million domestically unless a miracle happens (considering the mixed reviews).
The Dark Knight Rises retained its grip at the top of the box office over the weekend, grossing another $64 million for a $289 million total (soon it’ll be the third fastest film to $300 million). A 60% dip is a good hold for a sequel – especially one that opened so high. The film is running behind The Dark Knight, which at this stage had grossed $313 million. However, it is beginning to stabilize following the tragedy in Colorado (which saw a dip in box office takings), so it should reach a high gross, but it likely won’t best The Avengers’ mighty $615 million gross, or The Dark Knight’s $533 million domestic take.

It’s not a particularly pleasant time to be running through box office numbers, in light of what happened in Colorado, but it’s probably best to look on the positive side of these matters; as movie fans, we can’t let the act of one lunatic spoil enjoyment of our favorite art form. It’s now a shame that The Dark Knight Rises will always be associated with such a tragic event, but the film speaks for itself and it is a fitting end to Christopher Nolan’s trilogy (read our review).

Warner Bros. delayed releasing their weekend box office numbers as a mark of respect, however, it is fair to say that that the film probably didn’t reach the high grosses that it should have over the weekend. Having said that, the TDKR has taken ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: July 22, 2012

Ice Age: Continental Drift is set to top the box office over the weekend with an estimated $46 million take. That’s on a par with 2009’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs which scored $41 million, for a $196 million final total (the highest-grosser in the series). Time will tell if this franchise has life left, or if it is facing extinction – you get the drift?

The Amazing Spider-Man held-up well on its second weekend, dipping 44% . The $35 million weekend take means that the web-slinging adventure has now scored $200 million at the domestic box office. Globally the film has grossed more than $521 million. These are good numbers, but the film will fall short of the final grosses of the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire film at the domestic box ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: July 15, 2012

The Amazing Spider-Man topped the box office over the weekend grossing an estimated $65 million, for a powerful six day cume of $140 million. It’s a great number – but you must remember that Sam Raimi’s trilogy each debuted to $114 million, $88 million and $154 million respectively over their first weekends at the box office. However, a mid-week launch for this latest web-slinging adventure throws these numbers into a different realm. It’s still a good start for the reboot which has had mixed reviews (read ours). Globally the superhero film has grossed $341 million.

Seth MacFarlane’s Ted continues to impress.
Magic Mike is the new film by eclectic director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Contagion, Ocean’s 11, Haywire, Sex Lies and Videotape) which stars Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and collection of other fine male specimens as a group of ambitious strippers working in a Tampa, Florida nightclub. If you read our Magic Mike review, you’ll hear us break down why the movie (while not perfect) is certainly more than the implications of its initial premise – a premise which gives the impression that this film is strictly for the “girls night out” crowd.

In actuality, Magic Mike offers as much fun for guys as it does those who want to ogle some pretty boys. Of course, resistance amongst the “XY” chromosome camp has been quite pronounced and persistent, and after doing a quick survey of ...

Click to continue reading 3 Reasons Why Guys Don’t Want to See ‘Magic Mike’

Seth MacFarlane’s R-rated Ted (read our review) topped the box office over the weekend, grossing an impressive $54 million. The Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis film now has the second best debut for an R-rated comedy (lagging behind The Hangover 2’s $85 million), and it is also the second biggest opening of Walhberg’s career, trailing in the $68 million slipstream of 2001’s misjudged Planet of the Apes.

The film nudges 2000’s The Perfect Storm into third place on the list of Walhberg’s movie openings.

The $50 million film should turn out to be very profitable for Universal over the coming weeks as it has little to no competition on the comedy front. The talking teddy movie should then go on to earn even more cash once it hits DVD.

The film follows the story of Mike (Channing Tatum), who is hustling his way though several different jobs, projects and side ventures, in pursuit of his dream to open a custom furniture business. “But wait, I thought this was about male strippers” you say?

Ostensibly speaking it is, but this is a Soderbergh offering – so you’re going to discover that if you want to, you can find number of other themes, ideas and interesting elements in the film. Fear not, however, Mike’s central source of both income and distraction is, indeed, stripping.
Being that it’s a creation of Steven Soderbergh (Contagion, Haywire), it should be no surprise that (like its titular character) Magic Mike is more than the superficial flesh-fest it may initially seem to be. Aside from being a witty reversal of the usual cinematic gender roles (men, instead of girls, being showcased as sexual objects), the film is also a refreshingly original (and often hilarious) workplace ensemble comedy; a subtle social commentary on blue-collar struggle and the pitfalls of the American Dream; a nuanced character study anchored by breakout leading man Channing Tatum (The Vow); and even at its weakest, a cute (if not cliched) slow-burn love story.

On the off-chance you decided to read this opening paragraph before watching any of the clips featured in this article – bear in mind, these are NSFW promos for an R-Rated, male stripper dramedy titled Magic Mike. If you get busted by your boss for pulling up videos where both Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey (among others) shake their rear ends at the camera, wearing nothing but thongs: it’s your own fault.

Moving on…

Magic Mike is poised to become the latest in a string of successful Tatum vehicles, which began with the romantic drama The Vow and carried on through with the suprisingly popular (and acclaimed) 21 Jump Street reboot.
As much flashy fun as the domestic Magic Mike trailer is, it left many a viewer (the Screen Rant Underground podcast crew included) perplexed – with its emphasis on the romantic angle between the film’s namesake, as played by Channing Tatum and his would-be girlfriend (Cody Horn).

(One in the vein of a Robert Altman production, no less.)

The new international trailer for Magic Mike not only offers lots of new footage, but also paints a very different portrait of the film – by focusing on the experiences of “The Kid” (Alex Pettyfer), a newcomer to the exotic world of risque entertainment provided by his mentor/newfound bro Mike – and other veterans of the ...

Click to continue reading ‘Magic Mike’ International Trailer: More Bromance & Male Stripping

Channing Tatum is a successful male stripper looking for something more, in the trailer for 'Magic Mike', the new film from director Steven Soderbergh.

If you’re a frequent listener of the Screen Rant Underground Podcast, then you know that Steven Soderbergh’s male stripper dramedy Magic Mike is a project that first piqued our interest a while back (that joke writes itself).

No doubt, you have already watched the full-length trailer above – and, for our money, it does not disappoint, as far as teasing a male… uh, striptease comedy that looks as entertaining as those previously-released promo images (which include Matthew McConaughey as a “sexy” Uncle Sam, among other strange spectacles) suggested.

Magic Mike was largely inspired by star Channing Tatum’s own experiences as a professional stripper, during his pre-Hollywood days. The film revolves around the title character (Tatum) as he mentors a newcomer dubbed “The Kid” (Alex Pettyfer) in the art of “partying, picking up women, ...

Click to continue reading ‘Magic Mike’ Trailer: Channing Tatum’s Got Mad Stripping Skills
