[UPDATE: According to Charlize Theron, the official start-date is now June 2nd. Scroll down to the bottom of the article for details.]

There hasn’t been a Mad Max film since 1985, but George Miller has officially been trying to make one – Mad Max: Fury Road – since 2003. First with Mel Gibson, and then with Tom Hardy, the man who will be Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

Hardy has been sporting a massive beard for the role for the past few months in preparation for the impending start date. Unfortunately, the film has yet to begin shooting and Hardy has no idea when it will.

Pictures of gnarly vehicles from 'Mad Max: Fury Road' - which is supposed to begin shooting in April - have popped up online. Is this troubled sequel finally getting made?

Few films have had a history as troubled as Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth film in the beloved Mad Max series. Twice now, the film was supposed to go into production (once with Mel Gibson and again with Tom Hardy), but was delayed due to the Iraq War and torrential rains, respectively.

Whereas most filmmakers would’ve given up on Fury Road at this point, director George Miller seems determined to make it a reality with Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) on board as the titular Max. Today, we have pictures of some of the gnarly, post-apocalyptic vehicles we’ll be seeing if the film ever makes it to the big screen.

Mel Gibson recently gave a Q&A session after a screening of George Miller’s original Mad Max at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles. During the event, Gibson dropped some details on his upcoming projects, which include a Viking epic – now been titled Berserker - his upcoming film about Judah Maccabee and George Miller’s thoughts on the latest Mad Max film, Fury Road.

Gibson’s next film, Get The Gringo (formally titled How I Spent My Summer Vacation), is going straight to VOD but he appears to still be interested in big-budget filmmaking – much like his previous directorial efforts Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto.

With regards to the Viking film Berserker, Gibson said:

This week:

Stallone’s Bullet in the Head is absolutely rock hard; Charlize Theron talks Mad Max; Harry Potter director David Yates hears a Voice; Ben Affleck models the 70s look in Argo; someone opens the Nightmare Box and Scout Taylor Compton and Dee Wallace rule in King.

Sequels are definitely a mixed bag in terms of quality, but one of their advantages is an audience’s immediate connection and empathy towards a familiar and (hopefully) beloved character. No one really cares what’s inside the Temple of Doom or where the Holy Grail is hidden, they just want to go on another adventure with Indiana Jones.

Our interest and investment in these characters and their worlds often percolates in the years (or sometimes decades) between installments, and the opportunity to revisit them is often greeted with unmatched fervor – which makes it enormously disappointing as you watch a film unfold and realize that while the character on the big screen may look and sound the way you remember, something is… missing.

Characters originally depicted as being total badasses ...

Click to continue reading 10 Badass Characters Neutered by Their Sequels

After years of delays and false stars, George Miller's 'Mad Max: Fury Road' is given a new production start date. Will weather permit for Tom Hardy's take on Max?

Before Inception debuted to widespread success and before being cast as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, Tom Hardy was chosen to lead the return of the Mad Max franchise. That was back in 2009 and since then, despite filling out most of its cast, Mad Max: Fury Road has been unable to get its tires spinning.

George Miller, the man who directed Mel Gibson’s Mad Max trilogy, has been working on making Mad Max 4 for a very long time. When Hardy was announced as Gibson’s replacement, Miller had already been pushing the project for a decade and after waiting that long, what did we get? Two more years of delays! Finally, it appears that Mad Max: Fury Road is on its way, to begin shooting early ...

Click to continue reading Tom Hardy’s ‘Mad Max 4′ Begins Shooting in January 2012

[Update: George Miller is talking about the reason for the delay.]

Things are not looking good for Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller’s fourth Mad Max adventure has hit another road block – meaning that the film won’t start filming until 2012, at the earliest.

It’s the second delay for the film (which is scheduled for back-to-back shooting with a sequel, Furiosa) in recent months and there are reports that the reboot might even be scrapped – as the price of the Australian dollar rises. The action adventure film, which is currently set to star Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, was postponed in July because an unexpected amount of rain left proposed shooting locations too green for George Miller’s vision of a post apocalyptic world.
It’s been a quarter of a century since we last saw Mad Max on the big screen, and although it’s starting to feel like director George Miller is dangling Mad Max: Fury Road in front of us like a carrot on a stick, the project continues to crawl forward. Despite the latest set of delays, Miller is still making progress rounding out the film’s cast.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Riley Keough is in talks to star as one of the “Five Wives” – a group of women who need Max’s protection from “the bad guys.” While incredibly vague, it’s the only confirmed detail we have regarding the movie’s plot so far.

Every recent bit of news regarding Mad Max: Fury Road has been fantastic. Despite concerns that the next Mad Max installment would be retrofitted with 3D, we later discovered the film would actually be filmed using advanced 3D tech. Additionally, despite earlier concerns about casting, we’ve seen Miller actually put together a decent group of talent.

Unfortunately, the news today is less fantastic – production on Mad Max: Fury Road has stalled.

At the L.A. Inception premiere, Tom Hardy (the star of Fury Road) told MTV the production has hit a temporary red light.

While the news is disconcerting, it may give Hardy a little more time to get in peak physical form for the role.
The guys over at /Film had a reader point them towards an exclusive article in the Australian movie magazine Inside Film, which stated that Dr. George Miller’s upcoming sequel/reboot Mad Max: Fury Road is going to be going the 3D route.

For months now we’ve suspected that Mad Max 4 would be retrofitted with 3D – i.e., the type of post-production 3D conversion process that we’ve seen with Clash of the Titans, Alice In Wonderland and most recently in The Last Airbender.

Avid movie fans know all too well that the process of retrofitting a movie with 3D is a real issue in the movie industry right now.
George Miller has been working on a fourth installment of the Mad Max franchise for the better part of a decade. The film was originally set to star Mel Gibson in the role that made him famous, but age and personal troubles appear to have waylaid these plans. Now British actor Tom Hardy (Inception) is now set to slip into Mel’s old leathers for the next film in the 30-year-old franchise.

During an interview with Tom Hardy about his role in this Chris Nolan’s Inception, Collider managed to sneak in a few questions about the actor’s other upcoming gig- the lead role in Mad Max 4.

Recasting the iconic character portrayed by Mel Gibson has been a point of contention among fans, and if his comments are any indication – it’s not a responsibility that Hardy is taking lightly:

“There were many, many actors that would probably be right for Mad Max and there’s many out there who could probably do an exceptional job to portray him.
With the release of Iron Man 2, Screen Rant looks back at the 12 best movie sequels ever made.

Before I begin with this list of our favorite movie sequels, I want to stress this is strictly opinion and not fact. I hope the following will incite discussion and debate, but let it be known that no list is definitive. Having said that, let’s get it on!

In honor of Iron Man 2 releasing this weekend, it seemed right to come up with a list of cinema’s top sequels. Not to mention, there are endless movie sequels in the mix for the upcoming years.

While the top three picks on our list seemed obvious, setting even them in order was a tough task. More difficult was rounding out a top ten. So, instead of just going with the standard ten, we’ve extended our list to 12. Included are four costumed heroes, a ...

Click to continue reading The 12 Best Movie Sequels Ever Made

Mad Max 4 is reportedly getting a Clash of the Titans style 3D retrofit - according to actor Nicholas Hoult.

It’s been common knowledge that George Miller’s Mad Max 4 (or Fury Road ) would be a 3D feature for quite sometime. Considering that it’s a $100 million tent-pole film in the second decade of the 21st Century – that’s no big surprise.

However, what may come as surprise is that the movie, which stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, will be converted to 3D – after the film has been shot.
Warner Bros. has signed a deal with IMAX to release up to 20 films in that format over the next three years, with The Hobbit now slated for a 2012 release.

Well, here’s a pretty significant piece of news on more than one account:

An official statement has been released, revealing that Warner Bros. has signed a huge deal with IMAX to release up to 20 of their movies in that format from 2010 to 2013. And buried within this news is a detail that shakes things up a bit when it comes to the long-awaited adaptation of The Hobbit in that it’s now slated to come out a lot further down the road than we expected.

Along with the announcement of the WB/IMAX deal comes a bunch of release dates for each of the movies that are part of it. Amongst those is The Hobbit, which we thought was going to come out in December of 2011 ...

Click to continue reading The Hobbit Set For 2012 as WB & IMAX Sign 20 Film Deal

Update: MTV Claims that Patrick Stewart is NOT in Mad Max 4

He’s performed Shakespeare and boldly gone where no one has gone before; he’s even helped to sharpen Wolverine’s claws but is Patrick Stewart now about to visit the post-apocalyptic wastelands of Australia to film Mad Max: Fury Road?

Possibly.

A scooper emailed Harry Knowles at Ain’t It Cool News with the following:

“We met the one AND ONLY Patrick Stewart in Sydney today I’m still giddy… sa what u will about Chris Pine, but in my book, the sexiest captain title still belongs 2 Jean-Luc Picard! (And considering Stewart is 70… thats something!)”

“Anyway, he was so kind and so giving, and he made a point to say hello to most people in and out of the rooms… he signed my XMen DVD and I got to ask him whether ...

Click to continue reading Is Patrick Stewart In Mad Max 4?
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting the news that four more cast members have joined the upcoming fourth Mad Max film, entitled Fury Road. We already know that Tom Hardy (Bronson, RockNRolla) will be starring in the lead role with Charlize Theron co-starring, but joining them is Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Teresa Palmer and Adelaide Clemens.

Hoult is definitely starring in the movie, while Kravitz (Assassination of a High School President), Palmer (Wolf Creek) and Clemens (Love My Way) are in various stages of negotiations. Details are being kept under wraps about the Mad Max sequel, although we know Hoult’s character is called “Nux” and the character Kravitz’s is set to play is called “Five Wives.” If cast, Palmer and Clemens would be, “in a convoy being chased by bad guys.”

Hoult is probably the biggest addition to the cast, although ...

Click to continue reading Four More Joining Mad Max 4 Cast
