Tom Hardy Uncertain About ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Start Date [UPDATED]

There hasn’t been a Mad Max film since 1985, but George Miller has officially been trying to make one – Mad Max: Fury Road – since 2003. First with Mel Gibson, and then with Tom Hardy, the man who will be Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

Hardy has been sporting a massive beard for the role for the past few months in preparation for the impending start date. Unfortunately, the film has yet to begin shooting and Hardy has no idea when it will.

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Vehicles Pop Up Online

Few films have had a history as troubled as Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth film in the beloved Mad Max series. Twice now, the film was supposed to go into production (once with Mel Gibson and again with Tom Hardy), but was delayed due to the Iraq War and torrential rains, respectively.

Whereas most filmmakers would’ve given up on Fury Road at this point, director George Miller seems determined to make it a reality with Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) on board as the titular Max. Today, we have pictures of some of the gnarly, post-apocalyptic vehicles we’ll be seeing if the film ever makes it to the big screen.

Mel Gibson Talks ‘Berserker’, ‘Maccabee’ & ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’

Mel Gibson recently gave a Q&A session after a screening of George Miller’s original Mad Max at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles. During the event, Gibson dropped some details on his upcoming projects, which include a Viking epic – now been titled Berserker - his upcoming film about Judah Maccabee and George Miller’s thoughts on the latest Mad Max film, Fury Road.

Gibson’s next film, Get The Gringo (formally titled How I Spent My Summer Vacation), is going straight to VOD but he appears to still be interested in big-budget filmmaking – much like his previous directorial efforts Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto.

10 Badass Characters Neutered by Their Sequels

Sequels are definitely a mixed bag in terms of quality, but one of their advantages is an audience’s immediate connection and empathy towards a familiar and (hopefully) beloved character. No one really cares what’s inside the Temple of Doom or where the Holy Grail is hidden, they just want to go on another adventure with Indiana Jones.

Our interest and investment in these characters and their worlds often percolates in the years (or sometimes decades) between installments, and the opportunity to revisit them is often greeted with unmatched fervor – which makes it enormously disappointing as you watch a film unfold and realize that while the character on the big screen may look and sound the way you remember, something is… missing.

Things are not looking good for Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller’s fourth Mad Max adventure has hit another road block – meaning that the film won’t start filming until 2012, at the earliest.

It’s the second delay for the film (which is scheduled for back-to-back shooting with a sequel, Furiosa) in recent months and there are reports that the reboot might even be scrapped – as the price of the Australian dollar rises.The action adventure film, which is currently set to star Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, was postponed in July because an unexpected amount of rain left proposed shooting locations too green for George Miller’s vision of a post apocalyptic world. It’s been a quarter of a century since we last saw Mad Max on the big screen, and although it’s starting to feel like director George Miller is dangling Mad Max: Fury Road in front of us like a carrot on a stick, the project continues to crawl forward. Despite the latest set of delays, Miller is still making progress rounding out the film’s cast.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Riley Keough is in talks to star as one of the “Five Wives” – a group of women who need Max’s protection from “the bad guys.” While incredibly vague, it’s the only confirmed detail we have regarding the movie’s plot so far.

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Production Delayed

Every recent bit of news regarding Mad Max: Fury Road has been fantastic. Despite concerns that the next Mad Max installment would be retrofitted with 3D, we later discovered the film would actually be filmed using advanced 3D tech. Additionally, despite earlier concerns about casting, we’ve seen Miller actually put together a decent group of talent.

Unfortunately, the news today is less fantastic – production on Mad Max: Fury Road has stalled.

At the L.A. Inception premiere, Tom Hardy (the star of Fury Road) told MTV the production has hit a temporary red light.

While the news is disconcerting, it may give Hardy a little more time to get in peak physical form for the role. It’s not like ...

George Miller has been working on a fourth installment of the Mad Max franchise for the better part of a decade. The film was originally set to star Mel Gibson in the role that made him famous, but age and personal troubles appear to have waylaid these plans. Now British actor Tom Hardy (Inception) is now set to slip into Mel’s old leathers for the next film in the 30-year-old franchise.

It’s been common knowledge that George Miller’s Mad Max 4 (or Fury Road ) would be a 3D feature for quite sometime. Considering that it’s a $100 million tent-pole film in the second decade of the 21st Century – that’s no big surprise.

However, what may come as surprise is that the movie, which stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, will be converted to 3D – after the film has been shot. The 3D retrofit would be similar to fellow Warner Bros stablemate Clash of The Titans – and you already know how we felt about that conversion.

The Hobbit Set For 2012 as WB & IMAX Sign 20 Film Deal

Well, here’s a pretty significant piece of news on more than one account:

An official statement has been released, revealing that Warner Bros. has signed a huge deal with IMAX to release up to 20 of their movies in that format from 2010 to 2013. And buried within this news is a detail that shakes things up a bit when it comes to the long-awaited adaptation of The Hobbit in that it’s now slated to come out a lot further down the road than we expected.

Four More Joining Mad Max 4 Cast

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting the news that four more cast members have joined the upcoming fourth Mad Max film, entitled Fury Road. We already know that Tom Hardy (Bronson, RockNRolla) will be starring in the lead role with Charlize Theron co-starring, but joining them is Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Teresa Palmer and Adelaide Clemens.

Hoult is definitely starring in the movie, while Kravitz (Assassination of a High School President), Palmer (Wolf Creek) and Clemens (Love My Way) are in various stages of negotiations. Details are being kept under wraps about the Mad Max sequel, although we know Hoult’s character is called “Nux” and the character Kravitz’s is set to play is called “Five Wives.” If cast, Palmer and Clemens would be, “in a convoy being chased by bad guys.”
