Jason Richman is writing the script for New Line's MacGyver film adaptation - a contemporary revision of the 80s icon.

Now that the comedy caper MacGruber has opened (to mixed reviews) it would appear that New Line has decided to de-mothball the film’s 80s television show inspiration MacGyver - and bring it to the big screen (with a contemporary spin).

The studio has hired writer Jason Richman to pen a script for the MacGyver film – increasing the likelihood we’ll see a modern adaptation of the 80s icon.

For those who weren’t around in the 80s, MacGyver starred Stargate’s Richard Dean Anderson (to me he’ll always be MacGyver) as the titular secret agent who used his quick wits and anything within arms reach to get him out of danger. If he was locked in a room, surrounded by bad guys with nothing but a toothpick, a sausage, and a piece of string – he’d ...

Click to continue reading MacGyver Film Recruits a Writer

Latino Review has nabbed an exclusive that claims MacGyver is going to take MacGruber to court. Now, some of you might be having the obvious reaction of “Dude, they’ve been running MacGruber sketches on SNL for like…a hundred (unfunny) years. Why a lawsuit now?”

On the surface it might seem like a money-grab scheme now that MacGruber is going to the movies – however, according to Latino Review‘s source (and some legal research) there is a fine line of parody rights that MacGruber may have crossed by making the jump to the big screen. Here is the breakdown of the situation as per “Pinche Taco” Latino Review‘s inside informant:

You see, the laws of Parody are extremely strict. You can do a 5 page mockery of the Fantastic Four in MAD MAGAZINE ( I always loved their movie parodies!). You ...

Click to continue reading MacGyver Taking MacGruber to Court?

Hollywood is currently going through a remake frenzy of old films and television shows like we’ve never seen before. And the latest show from a bygone era to be given a cinematic make-over is MacGyver.

MacGyver starred Stargate‘s Richard Dean Anderson as an agent for the Phoenix Foundation who was able to get out of any scrape by using everyday objects as weapons.

The new feature is set up at Newline Cinema and it will be produced by Raffaella De Laurentiis, Martha De Laurentis and Lee Zlotoff who created the original series.

The show ran from 1985 to 1992 on ABC and it was sort of like Indiana Jones meets James Bond meets The A-Team. It was fun for its day but it will be difficult to balance the shows easy going charm and farfetched gadgetry with today’s Bourne style ferocity.

New Line’s ...

Click to continue reading Prepare For The Return Of… MacGyver?
