This week's DVD and Blu-ray releases feature a handful of cinema classics and some mediocre new releases that should please genre fans.

This week’s home video releases are impressive on all counts, but you won’t find yourself breaking the bank to enjoy it all. Most of the latest DVD and Blu-ray releases are worth a watch, but a cheap rental should suffice.

Most of the releases this week feature all-star casts in either parody or serious form and showcase Hollywood’s best. The only film that doesn’t seem to belong this week is Killers, which comes off as a lazy version of Knight and Day.

Either way, this week’s releases are a step up from the other batches in recent months. Next week bodes well for September’s home video schedule, but with some superb classics this week, it will be hard to top.

The following movies can be found on DVD and Blu-ray.

MacGruber is a silly action movie homage highlighted by twisted, gross and truly hilarious moments. With this movie you can consider the 'SNL curse' broken.

Screen Rant’s Kofi Outlaw reviews MacGruber

I went into MacGruber with low expectations. After all, movies adapted from SNL sketches have largely been agonizing experiences ever since the days of Wayne’s World passed us by. And at this point, The Blues Brothers seems like a gift from God, rather than a testament to the comedic potential of good SNL turned movie.

So it’s understandable why many people would turn their noses up at the notion that a Saturday Night Live sketch about a MacGyver knock-off, who constantly blows himself up, could be adapted into a feature-length action/comedy. Thankfully for us all, the filmmakers abandon the constrictive premise of the MacGruber SNL sketch and dive headfirst into some wonderfully demented comedic territory.

The “plot” of MacGruber is lifted straight out of ...

Click to continue reading MacGruber Review

We interview the stars, writers and director of MacGruber about '80s action flicks, embarrassing your mom, and the misuse of celery.

This week I attended the press junket for Universal’s movie adaptation of the SNL sketch MacGruber and had a chance to talk with stars Will Forte, Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe, along with SNL writers Jorma Taccone and John Solomon who directed and co-wrote the film, respectively.

The conversation was fast and funny, with topics ranging from the unlikely journey of MacGruber from sketch to feature film, the late 80s/early 90s action flicks which inspired the movie, and the soon-to-be-infamous “celery scene.”

To be specific, I had a chance to speak with stars Will Forte (who also co-wrote the film), Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe, and director Jorma Taccone; somehow we made it through the entire set of interviews without co-writer John Solomon saying a word. Maybe he said half a word, but if so, it was too soft ...

Click to continue reading ‘MacGruber’ Team Talks ’80s Action Flicks & Celery Abuse

Rogue Pictures has released a set of five MacGruber clips to whet your appetite for the Saturday Night Live inspired-comedy starring Will Forte. If you’re still skeptical, as many of us were, maybe the clips will help sate your worries.

The plot isn’t particularly robust (though early reviews credit the film’s stupidity as a well-excuted maneuver) following Ex-special operative MacGruber who is “called back into action to take down his archenemy, Dieter Von Cunth, who’s in possession of a nuclear warhead and bent on destroying Washington, D.C.”

In addition to Forte, MacGruber stars Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, and Val Kilmer.

A new trailer and poster for the SNL action-comedy spin-off MacGruber continues to impress. Is MacGruber the sleeper comedy hit of 2010?

The upcoming Saturday Night Live spin-off film, MacGruber, looks better every day – and now we’ve got a new trailer and poster to help fuel your excitement for the May 21st release. With every released image or clip, the anticipation continues to rise. What started as another eye-rolling SNL crossover film is looking like the potential comedy sleeper hit of the summer.

Will Forte’s recurring character from the live sketch comedy show was always one of the bright spots in what many considered a weak decade for SNL. Look a little closer and many of the skits are perfect for the transition into film.

But considering that the premise is a parody of an already established television hero, MacGyver, this movie has a chance to resonate with more than just SNL fans.
Adding to the red and green band trailers for the upcoming action-comedy MacGruber, we now have a second red band trailer for you to (maybe) enjoy.

MacGruber is the feature-length version of the popular Saturday Night Live character/sketch of the same name. Will Forte, who plays the titular bumbling ex-special operative, is starring in the film version. Along with Forte, the film sports an impressive supporting cast – some reprising their roles from the SNL sketch, whilst others are new to the fold.

The film co-stars Kristin Wiig as MacGruber’s assistant, Vicki St. Elmo; Ryan Phillippe as Lt.
Latino Review has nabbed an exclusive that claims MacGyver is going to take MacGruber to court. Now, some of you might be having the obvious reaction of “Dude, they’ve been running MacGruber sketches on SNL for like…a hundred (unfunny) years. Why a lawsuit now?”

On the surface it might seem like a money-grab scheme now that MacGruber is going to the movies – however, according to Latino Review‘s source (and some legal research) there is a fine line of parody rights that MacGruber may have crossed by making the jump to the big screen. Here is the breakdown of the situation as per “Pinche Taco” Latino Review‘s inside informant:

You see, the laws of Parody are extremely strict. You can do a 5 page mockery of the Fantastic Four in MAD MAGAZINE ( I always loved their movie parodies!). ...

Click to continue reading MacGyver Taking MacGruber to Court?

OK, I’ll admit it. MacGruber is one of my least favorite sketches in the SNL arsenal. I like Will Forte and Kristen Wiig, but I just can’t get into the mostly dumb situations the character finds himself in, and most of the jokes are tired or worn out. I understand the concept behind it – a bumbling counter-spy agent (that closely resembles MacGuyver) is always too busy explaining himself and working through his own life issues to actually finish the job and ends up being exploded at the end of the sketch.

When it was announced that longtime SNL producer Lorne Michaels was making a movie based on MacGruber, my first response was “What the…?” Then actors Ryan Phillipe (Antitrust), Val Kilmer (Heat), Powers Boothe (Deadwood) joined the cast along with former SNL’er Maya Rudolph (Away We Go), and my interest piqued just ...

Click to continue reading The World is Saved: MacGruber Red & Green Band Trailers [Updated]

A bunch of new images have recently appeared online for what are sure to be some anticipated movies simply as a result of the people involved, not necessarily how good the movies look themselves. They are the new Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) comic book adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. The World; the new comedy Cop Out directed by Kevin Smith (Clerks); MacGruber, the movie based on the Saturday Night Live sketch; and Your Highness, an historical comedy from the director of Pineapple Express and starring the likes of Danny McBride, James Franco and Zooey Deschanel.

The image above is actually the first of two official images released for Edgar Wright’s fantasy-comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which stars Michael Cera as the titular character who must defeat his new girlfriend’s seven evil ex-boyfriends in ...

Click to continue reading New Images: Scott Pilgrim, Cop Out, MacGruber & More

Universal Studios has posted synopses of some of their major 2010 films, and two are piquing our interest here at Screen Rant.

The first is “Untitled Robin Hood Adventure,” directed by Ridley Scott of Blade Runner, Alien, Black Hawk Down, and I could keep going, fame. Russell Crowe steps into the tights (well, more like armor this time around looking at the Crowe’s Robin Hood costume) of the mythic English folk hero who enacted his own economic stimulus package for the peasants of Nottingham village.

This story has come to the big screen countless times, twice in one year even, with 1991 seeing Patrick Bergin in Robin Hood matching barbs with Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Some would say neither film, which played up the bandit’s romantic soul and added period realism, hit the bull’s-eye, and ...

Click to continue reading New Universal Films to Watch Out For: Robin Hood, MacGruber
