DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: March 1st, 2011

March kicks off with a healthy list of DVD and Blu-ray releases. A combination of memorable hits both old and new hit shelves in what should be a good week for retailers.

One of the greatest animated classics of all-time returns to home video on Blu-ray as Disney breaks Bambi out of the vault for another release. Meanwhile, one of Jim Carrey’s most underrated comedies finds itself on the Blu-ray format as well.

As for new releases, each genre is accounted for with everything from animated blockbusters like Megamind to the Oscar-nominated 127 Hours to Dwayne Johnson’s return to action in Faster. Every movie fan should find something to their liking this week.

2011 Golden Globe Award Winners

For 68 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been celebrating their favorites in film and television with the Golden Globe Awards.

Once again, the multifaceted and generally hilarious Ricky Gervais will be serving as host of tonight’s gala. While those in attendance will be filled with anticipation about whether or not they will take home the award in their chosen category, viewers at home will be anxiously waiting to see how far Gervais will push the comedic envelope with his monologue and numerous ad-libs throughout the night.

With 25 separate categories having to fit within tonight’s given time slot, something tells me that Gervais will be moving things along at a swift pace – all while sipping from his iconic glass a beer that always remains not-so-hidden beneath his podium.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: December 12th 2010

The Chronicles of Narnia gets that sinking feeling, but at least the crew aren’t feeling like a Tourist; apparently Guillermo del Toro just wasn’t busy enough; Sofia Vergara and Jessica Biel set a date for New Year’s Eve; Adam Sandler and Kevin James start the ignition for Valet Guys; Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy move to The Wettest County in the World; James Franco suffers from Maladies; we approach Serial Killer Days; Mark Wahlberg is a Teddy Bear; Chris Tucker is a Rabbit and did that book just move? No the Atlas Shrugged.

Box Office

The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader (read our review) was the leader at the box office over the weekend. The big budget fantasy film grossed a disappointing $24.5 million– much lower than Walden Media and 20th Century Fox would have liked.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: December 5th 2010

This week:

Harry Potter waves his magic wand – but he can’t get un-Tangled; Magnolia Films has Good Neighbours; Ben Stiller and James Franco talk about being Young; Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi have Contraband and Michael Douglas returns!

Box Office

Disney’s Tangled duked it out with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 for the top spot over the weekend. The boy wizard lost with Tangled taking $21.5 million to Potter‘s $16.7 million. The Potter film has now banked a mighty $244 million, while the animated fairy tale has scored $96.5 million.

Burlesque danced up another $6.1 million – upping its domestic total to $27 million. The film stars Cher and Christina Aguilera.

The latest Denzel Washington and Tony Scott team-up Unstoppable banked another $6 million for a grand total of $68.9 million.

James Franco & Anne Hathaway Hosting The 2011 Oscars

No over-40 comedian will get to monologue about Meryl Streep’s gazillion award nominations or George Clooney’s quest to win a naked golden man statuette for Best Acting at the 2011 Oscars ceremony. This year the hosting duties fall on two younger thespians whose standing with critics is on the rise.

Actor James Franco and actress Anne Hathaway have been officially confirmed to host the 83rd Annual Academy-Awards ceremony, which will take place on the evening of February 27th, 2011.

Comedians like Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, Chris Rock, Ellen DeGeneres, and Jon Stewart have hosted Oscar ceremonies in the past, and last year Martin teamed up with Alec Baldwin for the famed awards show, which has seen its ratings dwindle over the last decade or so. Movie News Wrap Up: May 8, 2009

This week:

Will Ferrell has a Hangover while the box office is UP; Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway do Drugs; Mary-Kate Olsen, Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens are Beastly; Sigourney Weaver returns to aliens; Lemony Snicket gets animated and Roberts and Bardem Eat.

Pixar’s UP stayed on top of the box office with a second weekend gross of $44 million. With great reviews and $137 million already in the bank, it looks like UP will be one of the biggest hits of the summer season.The R-rated comedy The Hangover opened strong in second place with a weekend take of $43 million. With a sequel already in development, it looks like a weekend that Warner Bros. doesn’t want to forget.
