‘Drive’ Director Talks ‘Drive 2,’ ‘Logan’s Run,’ & Not Directing ‘Doctor Who’

Despite being ~~criminally~~ snubbed this year with regard to Oscar nominations, Drive was easily one of the most critically-acclaimed and talked about films of 2011 (it was, in fact, Screen Rant’s favorite film).

Oscar nominations or no, there’s little doubt that director Nicolas Winding Refn will go onto bigger and better things as a result. In a recent interview, he talked about the success of Drive, the chances of him making Drive 2 (hint: they’re a whole lot better than zero), remaking Logan’s Run, and being passed over to direct an episode of Doctor Who.

‘Logan’s Run’ Lands A New Screenwriter

Nicolas Winding Refn’s critically-acclaimed Neo-Noir flick, Drive, has not been a huge hit at the box office – and is (bizarrely) at the center of a lawsuit over false advertising – but because of that movie, more people are now interested in hearing about whatever project Refn gets up to next, especially his new take on Logan’s Run.

Refn’s Drive leading man, Ryan Gosling, is also set to headline the Logan’s Run remake. While there’s no set production timetable for the project just yet, well-regarded scripters like Alex Garland and Will Beall have already been recruited to work on the screenplay.

With movies like Bronson and Valhalla Rising, Nicolas Winding Refn has proven himself to be one of the leading auteurs working in film today. In his latest film Drive, the Danish-born director continues to explore themes of masculinity and the nature of violence, pushing the limits of genre filmmaking and perhaps, finally launching him into mainstream recognition.

‘Castle’ Writer May Pen ‘Logan’s Run’ Remake

It’s a good time to be ex-cop turned screenwriter Will Beall. Besides his continued success working as an executive story editor/writer on Castle, Beall has been tapped by Warner Bros. to pen a Lethal Weapon reboot, the recently-greenlit Gangster Squad, an adaptation of his breakout novel “L.A. Rex” – and now, possibly the Logan’s Run remake as well.

Nicolas Winding Refn (Valhalla Rising, Bronson) will be at the helm of the new Logan’s Run, re-uniting him with his Drive star Ryan Gosling, who is also set to lead this dystopian futuristic sci-fi thriller (is there any other kind nowadays?).

Ryan Gosling to Star in ‘Logan’s Run’ Remake

A remake of the 1976 sci-fi hit Logan’s Run has languished in development hell for almost twenty years, but it looks like the project might finally be gaining some much needed traction.

Since the mid-90s, several notable filmmakers have been attached at various points including Bryan Singer, Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy), and Carl Erik Rinsch.

Rinsch departed the production earlier this year to focus on Universal’s upcoming adaptation of 47 Ronin, which unfortunately sent Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver back to square one with Logan’s Run. However, it looks like Nicolas Winding Refn (Valhalla Rising, Bronson) has been brought on board to help steer the project back on track – and Deadline is reporting that he’s already found his leading man.

Carl Rinsch Departs ‘Logan’s Run’ for ’47 Ronin’

Ridley Scott protege (and future son-in-law?) Carl Rinsch was set to direct the remake of Logan’s Run for Warner Bros., with 28 Days Later screenwriter Alex Garland already at work on a script.

Now, according to Heat Vision, Rinsch is no longer attached to the Logan’s Run remake, due to conflict with another project he has on his slate: Universal’s adaptation of the popular Japanese legend, 47 Ronin.

If you don’t know about Rinsch, he started out as a commercial director whose sci-fi-inspired ads lured him into the good graces of Ridley and Tony Scott (dating Ridley’s daughter helped too, I’m sure). ’28 Days Later’ Writer to Pen ‘Logan’s Run’ Remake

Last month we heard the news that Ridley Scott’s protégé, Carl Erik Rinsch will direct the Logan’s Run remake. And now we’re hearing that the project is continuing to gather steam, with a screenwriter already being eyed.

Heat Vision Blog reports that Alex Garland is in negotiations to write the Logan’s Run remake. Garland has built a solid career for himself over the last decade, particularly when collaborating with director Danny Boyle on such films as The Beach in 2000, 28 Days Later in 2002 and Sunshine in 2007.

As Ridley Scott’s protege, Carl Erik Rinsch has made quite an impression in Hollywood over the past few months. He came close to directing the upcoming Alien prequel (before those duties were passed on to Scott himself), and more recently sparked a studio bidding war for a feature length version of his short film The Gift. Now Rinsch has signed on to direct another high profile sci-fi property: the long-gestating remake of Logan’s Run.

Bryan Singer was famously attached to direct this remake back in 2004, but he left the project to direct Superman Returns. Updates On Sherlock Holmes 2, ‘Hot Wheels’ & ‘Logan’s Run’

Producer Alex Heineman recently shared some information on three films he and Joel Silver are working on. In an interview with Collider, the Silver Pictures producer made mention of significant movement in the production of Hot Wheels and the Logan’s Run remake, while confirming Sherlock Holmes 2 is definitely something they want to get off the ground.

Not much was said about Sherlock Holmes 2, but if you enjoyed the Guy Ritchie adaptation, you’ll be pleased to hear the production company plans on the sequel coming together soon. Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: February 1st, 2009

It’s February and Sunday and that means it’s Wrap Up time.

This week:

We look at the box office and Mickey Rourke sees Broken Horses; a Watchmen star watches women; Puss in Boots shuffles forward and Bryan Singer says Logan’s Run is slow.Box Office

Liam Neeson’s Taken surpassed expectations and shot up an impressive $24 million over the weekend – despite the Super Bowl.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop arrested another $14 million bringing its total to $84 million. I’m guessing that at some point somebody will start talking sequel.

The Uninvited grabbed $10 million, while New In Town was pretty much ignored with a $6.5 million weekend. Looks like Rene Zellweger will be talking about Bridget Jones 3.

Gran Torino crossed the $100 million milestone and made another $8.5 million. Looks like Clint is going out on a career high.

I last mentioned the plan to remake Logan’s Run in August, and it looks like although there’s been no news on it since then it’s still “on.”

MTV Movies sat down with producer Joel Silver and they chatted about his vision for the remake.

Disclaimer: I have not read the orginal story that the movie was based on.

In the original film, the story was about a society consisting exclusively of young people. At age 30 they would go to “Carousel,” which they thought was a passage to some higher level of existence, and thus went willingly, but was in fact forced euthanasia and they were just killed instead. It was an interesting concept and for its time (pre-Star Wars) it was a really cool flick. Sure, it’s a bit dated looking now so I’m not totally opposed to the idea of a ...

Tron 2: A Tough Road Ahead

A few days ago news of a new Tron movie started popping up on the net and today we have more detail on what’s happening with the movie.

The original Tron came out 25 years ago (if you can believe it!), released by Disney and went on to become a cult hit. The story was about a videogame developer (Jeff Bridges) who was sucked into the virtual reality world of computers, where he discovered that the programs there were actually sentient and living under the dictatorship of the Master Control Program. At the time the effects and concept were both cutting edge. Keep in mind that at the time the movie was released, the big games in arcades were Pac-Man and the first version of Donkey Kong!

Logan’s Run To Be A Two Hour Long Commercial

Ok, so not really – but the guy who’s been handed the keys to the movie, Joseph Kosinski has only directed commercials up until this point. Logan’s Run will be his first feature film.

Peter over at /Film put together a number of videos highlighting Kosinski’s commercial work. My impression of them is that for the most part they are quite classy and visually interesting… but in the end, boring.

Most of them do have a futuristic and antiseptic sci-fi vibe to them that is probably one of the reasons he was tapped to helm this. I just hope he brings a lot more life to the movie than he has in the commercial material he’s created.
