Fans that sneak out to see the latest Harry Potter movie this weekend will get a glimpse at another dark, and far more risque, fantasy tale in the form of director Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood.

Warner Bros. has released the trailer and poster for the flick, which refashions the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood as more of a supernatural horror thriller than a mildly creepy tale about a young girl’s misbegotten trip to her grandmother’s house.

Amanda Seyfried stars in Red Riding Hood as Valerie, a lovely young lady who’s “torn” between two gentlemen – and by that we mean she’s in love with broody loner Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but is betrothed to rich boy Henry (Max Irons). Behind the Scenes Pics from Red Riding Hood

Last year Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke signed on to direct a new Gothic version of the classic children’s tale Little Red Riding Hood. The working title for the film is actually The Girl with the Red Riding Hood but working titles almost always change during production, so something a little more familiar and shorter may actually be used come release time.

Hardwicke will be directing from a David Johnson script (Clash of the Titans 2) who also penned the sort of creepy thriller Orphan last year. I won’t spoil Orphan for you but there is somewhat of a big surprise at the end so I’m betting Johnson will do something similar for this film and the wolf will take off his suit revealing that it’s grandma underneath.

Gary Oldman to Join Cast of Red Riding Hood?

According to Heat Vision, Warner Bros.’ gothic fairy tale Red Riding Hood is acquiring some heavy hitting talent. Gary Oldman and Julie Christie, both of whom have made appearances in the Harry Potter franchise, are in talks to portray the characters of the Witchfinder General, whose job it is to hunt down the monster antagonist, and Red’s Grandmother, who apparently like to knit with silver needles, a fact that I’m sure will end up being pointedly convenient.

The younger members of the cast are Amanda Seyfried, Shiloh Fernandez, and Max Irons (son of Jeremy). So far, all the key players of a fairytale are here: the young heroine, her betrothed, the handsome pauper she falls for, the wise crone figure, and Gary Oldman, who ...

Twilight Director To Helm ‘Gothic’ Little Red Riding Hood

Variety is reporting that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has signed on to helm Warner Bros./Appian Way’s new gothic take on the classic Little Red Riding Hood fairytale. The Girl With The Red Riding Hood already has Orphan scribe David Johnson on-board as the screenwriter, and the film is said to be a retelling of the classic children’s tale, with a teenage love triangle at its center.

I wonder what series of films that premise can be found in…

Not much is known about the project other than that it will be a gothic retelling of the classic fairytale. One of the studios bringing us Riding Hood is Appian Way, which is co-owned by Leonardo DiCaprio.
