When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

It’s getting pretty scary out there for horror fans.

Horror hounds have suffered for years with weak remakes, torture porn-a-paloozas and other degrading attempts to make us jump. But 2010 represents a new low for the genre.

The Nightmare on Elm Street remake couldn’t scare a third grader. The biggest reaction to Devil came when audiences laughed over the story credit – “from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan.” And Survival of the Dead proved the zombie genre George A. Romero created has left him in the dust.

And let’s all agree that none of the Twilight films should be thrown in the horror category.

There are two types of people who are going to want to watch Let Me In: those who are all-too familiar with the Swedish novel-turned-movie which spawned this English-language remake, and those who have never heard the name Let The Right One In and are simply interested in a unique tale of adolescent romance and vampire drama.

Count me amongst those who know of Tomas Alfredson’s Swedish film adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s famous novel – and while that association certainly lends me a strong critical bias, I’ll try my best to be fair and judge Let Me In on its own merits.

For diehard genre film fans, there isn’t a better place to be each year than Austin, Texas, for Fantastic Fest. The annual event, which was founded by Tim League from Austin’s famous Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and Harry Knowles of Ain’t It Cool News, is the largest genre film festival in the United States and has become an important place for movie studios to show off their upcoming films.

Director Matt Reeves’ Let Me In – the English-language adaptation of the novel Let the Right One In by author John Ajvide Lindqvist – has struggled from the very beginning to gain favor with fans of the original Swedish cinematic version of the book.

The most recent trailer – as well as the Comic-Con footage – have begun to convince a number of naysayers that Let Me In may be a worthy remake.  There are now two new clips and an image from the vampire/coming of age pic that should further encourage the skeptics to give Reeves’ take on the story a chance to prove itself.

Fans of the Swedish vampire novel-turned-film, Let The Right One In, were initially worried that director Matt Reeves’ (Cloverfield) American remake, Let Me In, would do what most American remakes do to their foreign counterparts: strip away the aesthetic beauty of the work and replace it with the more utilitarian fast-paced action that American audiences traditionally enjoy.

And while some early reviews of Let Me In suggest that Reeves has done well with capturing the sort of sentiments and themes that made the Swedish film such a hit, the new Let Me In TV spot suggests that the marketing department has much less insight into what makes a movie resonate with audiences.

Several new movie one-sheets from around the globe have emerged online, including a Japanese poster for Tron Legacy; the French poster for Let Me In; a Russian banner for Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole; and the U.S. poster for the thriller The Next Three Days.

The first item now available for viewing is a “Chirashi poster,” or essentially a Japanese flyer for this winter’s tenpole pic, Tron Legacy.  Disney is hoping for a nice box office turnout around the world when it unleashes the 3D behemoth in theaters during the 2010 holiday season so don’t expect this to be the last international poster to pop up over the next few months.

Summertime and all that easy living is now done, and unless you’re one of those people who lives where the sun is always shining then the onset of Fall means four things: colder weather, earlier sunsets, heavier clothing and movies galore.

Yes, the summer has all those big blockbusters we’ve been waiting all year to see, but Fall is the time when we actually want to be in the movie theater: when being outdoors is no longer an attractive alternative and the cinema offers many, many, award-worthy films. The American remake of hit Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In, inexplicably shortened to Let Me In, was perhaps treated a little unfairly when it was first announced. Most people, myself included, jumped on it as “just another pointless remake” without having seen any footage.

Most of the time, when it comes to remakes, we have reason to be suspicious – but Let Me In is an exception. The first trailer squashed a lot of worries and now Hammer Films has released the film’s second trailer – which is equally impressive.
