As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films like ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

For 37 years, the People’s Choice Awards has been celebrating the fan favorites in film, television and music. In preparation for tonight’s awards ceremony, over 35 million votes were cast by the American public in hopes that their favorite film, television series, actor or musician will take home this coveted award.

For the second year in a row, the multifaceted Queen Latifah will be serving as host of this fanatical gala. With over 43 separate categories having to fit within the given timeslot, something tells me that Queen Latifah is going to be forced to move things along at a swift pace in order to fit each category within the 2-hour time-limit.

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

If you're a horror movie fan who's disappointed at the current state of affairs, here are five things YOU can do to encourage Hollywood to get things back on track.

It’s getting pretty scary out there for horror fans.

Horror hounds have suffered for years with weak remakes, torture porn-a-paloozas and other degrading attempts to make us jump. But 2010 represents a new low for the genre.

The Nightmare on Elm Street remake couldn’t scare a third grader. The biggest reaction to Devil came when audiences laughed over the story credit – “from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan.” And Survival of the Dead proved the zombie genre George A. Romero created has left him in the dust.

And let’s all agree that none of the Twilight films should be thrown in the horror category.

What’s worse is when a solid horror entry hits theaters it made precious little coin. Both Piranha 3D, the very definition of a B movie delight, and Let Me In underperformed ...

Click to continue reading Top 5 Ways To Save Horror Movies

'Let Me In' is fairly good vampire flick, but not quite as nuanced or powerful as the source material which spawned it.

Screen Rant’s Kofi Outlaw Reviews Let Me In

There are two types of people who are going to want to watch Let Me In: those who are all-too familiar with the Swedish novel-turned-movie which spawned this English-language remake, and those who have never heard the name Let The Right One In and are simply interested in a unique tale of adolescent romance and vampire drama.

Count me amongst those who know of Tomas Alfredson’s Swedish film adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s famous novel – and while that association certainly lends me a strong critical bias, I’ll try my best to be fair and judge Let Me In on its own merits.

The story is set in Los Alamos, New Mexico, in a small town circa 1983. Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is a boy living ...

Click to continue reading ‘Let Me In’ Review

For diehard genre film fans, there isn’t a better place to be each year than Austin, Texas, for Fantastic Fest. The annual event, which was founded by Tim League from Austin’s famous Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and Harry Knowles of Ain’t It Cool News, is the largest genre film festival in the United States and has become an important place for movie studios to show off their upcoming films.

Since the festival was founded in 2005, Fantastic Fest has hosted the world premieres of a number of major films, including There Will Be Blood, Apocalypto, and Zombieland. This year, Fantastic Fest promises another impressive round of world premieres, as well as a wide selection of original short films, documentaries, and special features.

Two new scenes from Matt Reeves' Let Me In have emerged online, and so has an image from the vampire tale, based off the Swedish novel Let the Right One In.

[Update: We've added two new Let Me In posters!]

Director Matt Reeves’ Let Me In – the English-language adaptation of the novel Let the Right One In by author John Ajvide Lindqvist – has struggled from the very beginning to gain favor with fans of the original Swedish cinematic version of the book.

The most recent trailer – as well as the Comic-Con footage – have begun to convince a number of naysayers that Let Me In may be a worthy remake. There are now two new clips and an image from the vampire/coming of age pic that should further encourage the skeptics to give Reeves’ take on the story a chance to prove itself.

Let Me In revolves around a troubled young boy named Owen (played by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who forms ...

Click to continue reading Somber New Clips & A Bloody Image From ‘Let Me In’ [Updated]

Fans of the Swedish vampire novel-turned-film, Let The Right One In, were initially worried that director Matt Reeves’ (Cloverfield) American remake, Let Me In, would do what most American remakes do to their foreign counterparts: strip away the aesthetic beauty of the work and replace it with the more utilitarian fast-paced action that American audiences traditionally enjoy.

And while some early reviews of Let Me In suggest that Reeves has done well with capturing the sort of sentiments and themes that made the Swedish film such a hit, the new Let Me In TV spot suggests that the marketing department has much less insight into what makes a movie resonate with audiences.

Watch this new clip from Matt Reeves' 'Let Me In' which shows off the quiet tension of a film that looks better with every new clip and trailer that's released.

The anticipation for Matt Reeves’ Let Me In continues to grow with a new clip from the film. The newly released scene from the remake of Swedish hit Let The Right One In (read our review) impressed wary crowds at the Comic-Con panel for the film.

There is plenty to get excited about for this upcoming remake. Let Me In brings one of America’s finest young actresses, Chloe Moretz, and budding actor Kodi Smit-McPhee together to explore one of the more complex relationships in movie history.

And then there is the star of today’s clip – the scene-stealing Richard Jenkins. From what we’ve seen, he is going to make some Oscar noise for his turn as The Father in Let Me In.
Several new movie one-sheets from around the globe have emerged online, including a Japanese poster for Tron Legacy; the French poster for Let Me In; a Russian banner for Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole; and the U.S. poster for the thriller The Next Three Days.

The first item now available for viewing is a “Chirashi poster,” or essentially a Japanese flyer for this winter’s tenpole pic, Tron Legacy. Disney is hoping for a nice box office turnout around the world when it unleashes the 3D behemoth in theaters during the 2010 holiday season so don’t expect this to be the last international poster to pop up over the next few months.

Summertime and all that easy living is now done, and unless you’re one of those people who lives where the sun is always shining then the onset of Fall means four things: colder weather, earlier sunsets, heavier clothing and movies galore.

Yes, the summer has all those big blockbusters we’ve been waiting all year to see, but Fall is the time when we actually want to be in the movie theater: when being outdoors is no longer an attractive alternative and the cinema offers many, many, award-worthy films. A few of them even stand the chance of being pretty good.

Of course the Fall movie landscape has been changing pretty radically in the last few years: September is now a “showcase for unique genre films” instead of just a studio dumping ground ...

Click to continue reading Screen Rant’s 2010 Fall Movie Preview

It’s been a somewhat lackluster summer movie season – with only a few highly anticipated films living up to their hype. While box office numbers are still strong there were plenty of high-profile films that failed to impress audiences.

The somewhat disappointing summer has left an empty void in a lot of moviegoers – a void that the Fall 2010 film season is prepped to fill.

Every so often the forces of fate and destiny combine to push a person to examine what is truly important in life. The universe has provided me with very clear signs that you, beloved Screen Rant readers, are in need of a reminder of one of the greatest character archetypes in our shared cinematic history…

Yes, I am of course referring to the “Creepy Little White Girl”.

Last week, one of my best friends decided to “lovingly” refer to me as the “creepy little white girl” from the George Lopez show (more on how I pick my friends later). In addition, one dark and stormy evening this week, another dear friend moanfully lamented that, “it seems like every year around fall some movie comes out with a creepy little girl.” Of course, upcoming films like The Last Exorcism, <a ...

Click to continue reading Creepy Little White Girls In Movies

As Let Me In continues to build buzz for its October release, a new viral campaign is up and running. Visitors are tasked with solving riddles to download images from the film.

The viral campaign for Matt Reeves’ Let Me In has kicked into gear. While these marketing strategies don’t necessarily help the box office, this should increase the buzz for a film that will need everybody in its corner.

Initial concerns were voiced when it was announced that Matt Reeves would direct an American remake of the Swedish sensation Let The Right One In. Everything we’ve heard and seen so far suggests he has done a pretty good job. As is customary these days with films for the younger crowd, a viral campaign has given the audience a chance to interact with the film they are anticipating.

The viral site, Help Me, now presents four complicated riddles. When you solve them all, a batch of images ...

Click to continue reading ‘Let Me In’ Viral Campaign Intrigues with Riddles & Images

A second trailer has been released for the Let the Right One In remake, entitled Let Me In by director Matt Reeves. The remake continues to prove its worth.

The American remake of hit Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In, inexplicably shortened to Let Me In, was perhaps treated a little unfairly when it was first announced. Most people, myself included, jumped on it as “just another pointless remake” without having seen any footage.

Most of the time, when it comes to remakes, we have reason to be suspicious – but Let Me In is an exception. The first trailer squashed a lot of worries and now Hammer Films has released the film’s second trailer – which is equally impressive.

The trailer premiered at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con but has, unsurprisingly, made its way online.

As director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) said during the Let Me In panel a couple of ...

Click to continue reading ‘Let Me In’ Trailer #2

Let Me In is the American remake of the highly-acclaimed Swedish novel-turned-movie, Let The Right One In. Although fans of the Swedish original were in arms about the thought of a remake, the recent Let Me In trailer has done a lot to change their minds.

Now director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and stars Kodie Smit-McPhee (The Road) and Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass) will attempt to seduce the many vampires walking the halls of Comic-Con 2010 – and even a few movie fans as well.

We examine the Day Three schedule for Comic-Con 2010. Check out our movie panel picks for Saturday, July 24th.

It’s Sunday, which means that only one more Comic-Con-less weekend is left before the big-show. Much like Thursday and Friday’s schedules, there’s more than enough options to sate even the most avid movie fans.

Saturday may be the most impressive day of the entire Con with panels for Green Lantern, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Cowboys & Aliens – not to mention Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. Much like Friday’s events, make sure to think ahead as to what you’d like to check out – and get in line early.

As with the previous Comic-Con schedules, we sorted through all of the offerings and selected the movie panels we’re most excited for.
