For those of you looking forward to the upcoming Paul Bettany starrer, Legion, you’ll definitely be excited for his next partnership with Legion director Scott Stewart on a movie called Priest.

There’ve been quite a few announcements about Priest recently, starting with the announcement and first look at the Priest poster from the Legion panel at San Diego Comic-Con last month. This week, we also found out that Karl Urban has joined the cast as the evil vampire named Black Hat and earlier, Maggie Q signed on as a warrior priestess who joins Bettany’s character on his mission.

That’s not all though. This week, True Blood’s Stephen Moyer and 90210’s Lily Collins were also announced as part of the cast this week. Moyer will play Bettany’s brother in the film and Collins will play his niece.

The story is about a warrior priest (Paul Bettany) who goes against the wishes of the church to seek out a group of vampires who have kidnapped his niece in a world torn by a war between the humans and vampires. There’s no end in sight for television shows and movies featuring vampires these days.

I’m excited about the cast for this flick and it’s definitely something I look forward to.

Now for the good stuff! Here are the first images of Bettany and Cam Gigandet in costume on the set of Priest thanks to JFX Online as well as one of two of the vampires thanks to IESB. Gigandet plays a sheriff who joins Bettany on his quest.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Sony Pictures presented the attendees in Hall H with the very first look at their upcoming fantasy thriller, Legion. In the footage we got to see a ton of R-rated action combined with some creepy horror scenes, and a side of warrior angels.

What we saw looked interesting and its star, the talented Paul Bettany, looked amazing. Today, we finally have for you the full red band trailer for Legion which shows you some of what we saw in San Diego.

As funny as this may seem, the intro of this trailer shows us the most normal look at Doug Jones we’ve seen in a movie! He plays the character known only as the “Ice Cream Man.” I’m exaggerating about his on-screen appearances, but still, you may not recognize him from his real face (extended mouth or not), but he played Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies and The Silver Surfer in the Fantastic Four sequel. I met him down there and he’s a great guy.

Notable call-outs from me: Kevin Durand looks awesome as Gabriel and the crazy mouthy demonic grandma was very creepy – that scene had a fun reaction with the audience at the Comic-Con panel.

This movie has my attention and it looks like a fun thriller with a great cast.

Legion’s story and direction comes from Scott Stewart with a screenplay by Peter Schink. The film stars Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid, Kevin Durand, Doug Jones, Tyrese Gibson and Adrianne Palicki.

What do you think of the trailer?

If you dig this and/or like Paul Bettany, Scott Stewart and him are already at work on their next feature together which also happens to be religious-themed: Priest. Check out the Priest poster which was revealed for the first time at this panel as well.

Legion opens January 22, 2010.

At yesterday’s panel for Sony Pictures Entertainment, we got a look at very interesting and unique films: Legion and District 9.

From the moment I stepped into the convention center on Wednesday, Legion was something I really wanted to learn more about.

I hadn’t heard much about it up until this week but the following image of its leading actor in costume had me intrigued:

Paul Bettany is one of my favorite actors and this image of him was bad-ass.

At the panel for this film, we were introduced to first-time director Scott Stewart who came out and displayed his excitement about being on stage in the biggest room of the Convention Center by taking a picture of the audience. Up until that point he was accustomed to being on our side of things in the audience.

Legion is written and directed by Stewart who up until this point, mainly did visual effects. On stage he talked about the film still in progress but he did bring the first ever footage of the movie as tease for those in attendance.

The trailer started with a very creepy intro featuring Doug Jones (Abe Sapien from Hellboy and Silver Surfer from the Fantastic Four sequel) playing the Ice Cream Man. This character was talked about quite a lot and he’ll be some one to look out for come time for the film’s release.

The trailer featured Bettany’s character, the angel Michael, cutting off his wings and freeing himself. He then stocks up on weapons then heads to a restaurant in the middle of nowhere where a pregnant woman works. His self-ordered mission: to protect her from an army of the angels as the unborn boy is apparently the savior of the future.

There were some very intense and creepy scenes involving a not-so-nice demonic grandma in the restaurant but that’s something you’ll have to wait and see for yourself when footage is officially released online.

The biggest callout for me about the footage we saw was seeing Kevin Durand as the warrior angel, Gabriel. He looked awesome, spoke awesome and had a very cool weapon to fight Michael with. Durand could not attend the panel as he’s currently filming his major role in the upcoming Russell Crowe-starrer, Robin Hood.

Overall, the trailer was interesting but I didn’t get the same feeling of excitement as I did from just seeing the poster before. It’s still something I’m very interesting in seeing though.

After the trailer, the panel filled up with the director Scott Stewart, Doug Jones, Adrianne Palicki, Tyrese Gibson, and Paul Bettany.

All of them were great on stage with Tyrese being the big crowd pleaser, loving every moment of being on stage. From his slow slow walk into his seat waving and getting the fans happy to forcing the MC to allow himself to introduce Paul Bettany. There was plenty of back-and-forth teasing about Bettany showing off his muscles in the film. He kept the atmosphere light and happy and the studio execs sitting behind me were loving every minute of it.

The idea of a post-apocalyptic, end-of-the-world story is what made the film an easy choice for Tyrese to be a part of. As soon as he heard that, he said “I’m in.”

When discussions began, Stewart revealed where the idea for this movie came from in a very basic and humorous way:

“Angels with machine guns, that’s what we need to do.”

They each took some time to briefly touch on the character they play with Gibson saying he’s got a complex backstory and while on his way somewhere he pullsed into this restaurant where all this crazy stuff happens. He then said he got involved in a “baby mamma drama” which had the crowd laughing.

There were only a few questions in the Q&A, most of which mainly focused on the religious themes and concept for the film. One of the two most interesting questions involved the tattoos in Bettany’s characters which the director says will be explained in the movie. The filmmakers apparently created their own language for the movie and tattoos are written in that language.

The other question of interest was about this strange collar that fell off Bettany in the first scenes of the footage when he cut off his wings. The director applauded the questioner for noticing that and explained how when making the film, they’d worry that people may not truly understand the deeper meaning behind that aspect. It also will be explained more deeply in the movie but the general idea is that it helps represent the Angel becoming free like humans are.

At the very end, Stewart announced another collaboration project with Bettany called Priest which is planned to open next year. Note the religious theme of both films.

Legion is something you may want to look out for. It opens January 22, 2010.

Another weekend, another Weekend Movie News Wrap Up.

This week:

Legion starring Dennis Quaid and Paul Bettany, Tom Hanks quits Fahrenheit 451, Nic Cage hunts for more National Treasure, Battlestar Galactica producer plans to make a television adaptation of Children of Men, Surrogates with Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell and news on when we can expect to see a trailer for Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

1. Dennis Quaid and Paul Bettany have joined the cast of Legion. According to Variety Paul Bettany stars as the archangel Michael:

“The only one standing between mankind and an apocalypse, after God loses faith in humanity. Man’s lone hope rests with a group of strangers who must deliver a baby they realize is Christ in his second coming.”

The film starts shooting soon and it will be directed by former FX guru Scott Stewart. Sounds like it should be good, and with Quaid on-board – I’m there.

2. Tom Hanks has pulled out of Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.

Darabont cites scheduling conflicts for Hanks’ departure. It’s another blow to the film that has been in development for about 15 years. Originally Mel Gibson planned to direct the project before passing it on to Darabont.

Fahrenheit 451 is one of my favorite books so I’d like to see this get made. Hanks probably wasn’t the best choice for the film, so it’s no great loss.

3. Nicolas Cage will get to hunt for more National Treasure.

Jon Turteltaub says that we should expect the third film in about three years:

“I’m guessing that we’re a few years away. By the time we come up with a decent idea and develop it into a complicated and intelligent puzzle it’s going to be at least 2009. Then to prep it and cast it… it should be three years away.”

I quite like these films, so National Treasure 3 shouldn’t be all bad.

4. Battlestar Galactica and Bionic Woman producer David Eick intends to make a television series based on Children of Men – the science fiction novel by P.D. James. The book also inspired the film directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Eick says that:

“It’s really taking root more in the origins of the novels in that it will focus on the cultural movement in which young people become the society’s utter focus.”

5. Radha Mitchell will join Bruce Willis in Jonathan Mostow’s Surrogates.

The film is based on a graphic novel which tells the story of a future where humans live their lives in isolation with surrogate robots interacting with others. Willis plays a cop who must leave the house for the first time in years in order to solve a crime. The film begins shooting on April 28th and it is due to open on November 20, 2009.

Sounds like it could be a pretty good film. Willis is always good value and Mostow knows how to put a good film together.

6. The trailer for Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be attached to Speed Racer when it is released on May 9th. The Warner Brothers release is the first Star Wars film not to have the famous Fox Fanfare before it.

The animated film will open on August 15.

That’s the Weekend Movie News Wrap Up for now, have a good week!
