[Update: We've added a new Underworld 4 pic of Kate Beckinsale!]

Today marks the beginning of a new weekly feature we are introducing here at Screen Rant – the movie image roundup! We’ve done image posts in the past, but they often only focus on two or three films at a time and usually only some of the bigger and more recognizable upcoming movies.

We’re changing that formula up by taking all the stills, concept art and behind-the-scenes photos we don’t single out during the week and consolidating them into one massive image post every Monday. These posts will have images from a multitude of genres including comedy, animation, romance, action, horror, sci-fi and drama – ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Fighters Turned Actors: Who Is To Blame?

The number of MMA fighters and Wrestlers crossing over into the film industry is growing every year. But not everybody thinks it's such a great idea.

A growing trend in Hollywood has set some movie lovers to DEFCON 2 and there is no sign of slowing. The blame can be spread in a number of directions, but this onslaught of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters getting lead gigs as actors in big-budget movies is a bit disconcerting.

So far, we have yet to see any truly worthy fighters-turned-actors in these career crossovers. I’m not asking for Oscar-winning performances, but can we at least pretend like we care about our audiences? There are plenty of people out there who simply won’t go to a movie because it is starring some MMA superstar – and who knows, maybe it was a film that deserved an experienced actor in the role.

I understand the appeal: There are fan bases already in place and putting fighters in films should guarantee a certain audience. ...

Click to continue reading Fighters Turned Actors: Who Is To Blame?

This week:

Mel Gibson returns from the Edge of Darkness but can’t oust Avatar from the top spot; The Little Fockers are now due at Christmas; Dennis Quaid is knocked out of Knockout but Bill Paxton shows the film some Big Love; Four words: George, Lucas, animated, musical – and is Sex and the City 3 already on the way?

Well – it did it! Avatar has now spent seven weeks at the top of the box office. The James Cameron epic grossed just under $29 million over the weekend. With $593 million in the bank so far it looks like the film will have out-grossed Titanic by the end of the week. It’s also closing in on $2 billion worldwide. These sorts of figures are really mind-boggling, and no matter what you say about the film, what it has managed to do financially is nothing ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: January 31st, 2010

Director Steven Soderbergh likes to straddle the fence between art and commerce. For every Ocean’s Eleven style film that the he makes, he likes to shoot at least one film that isn’t a shoe-in for a huge opening weekend.

When news came up last year that the Traffic director was going to direct an action film starring real-life mixed-martial artist Gina Carano called Knockout I didn’t really know what to expect. However, now the director has Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas and Dennis Quaid in negotiations to star in the film, it looks like this one is on the side of commerce. Although, having said that, these stars do like their Oscar bait.

Heat Vision Blog reports that the actors are circling the film for co-starring roles, and I’d assume that they’ll all sign on the dotted line ...

Click to continue reading Fassbender, McGregor, Douglas & Quaid Ready For A Knockout

This week:

Lionsgate goes in for the Knockout; Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes and Damon Wayans Jr are The Other Guys; Michael Sheen talks Tron and Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Emma Roberts and Amy Madigan find out What’s Wrong With Virginia.

1. When Steven Soderbergh’s Brad Pitt starring Moneyball fell apart earlier this year it left a hole in the director’s schedule.

The Oscar winning director obviously likes to keep busy so he signed on to helm the female spy thriller Knockout.

The independent production didn’t have a distributor attached, but now Lionsgate have picked up the film.

Knockout, which will star martial artist Gina Carano in her acting debut, starts shooting in Januray.

Soderbergh’s next release is the Matt Damon starrer The Informant` which opens this weekend.

After all the drama surrounding Moneyball earlier this year, Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s trilogy, The Informant!) has shrugged his shoulders of it and is moving onto another project, the bluntly titled Knockout. The film is a spy thriller that will see the true acting debut of female MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter, Gina Carano, and is described as being closer to La Femma Nakita and Kill Bill than Million Dollar Baby.

Knockout will be directed by Soderbergh, produced by Gregory Jacobs (Soderbergh’s long-time collaborator) written by Lem Dobbs (who’s written a couple of Soderbergh movies before) and financed/produced by Relativity Media.

Carano’s big-screen debut will see her playing, “a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is given a second chance to use her skills for constructive purposes.” Soderbergh considers it an action film ...

Click to continue reading Steven Soderbergh Prepares To ‘Knockout’ Audiences
