Since the original Kick-Ass hit theaters in 2010, Mark Millar has been telling everyone who will listen that Kick-Ass 2 was on the verge of being greenlit. Now, it seems more likely than ever that that is actually the case – only without Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class) at the helm.

Mark Millar – who has a habit of exaggerating, especially when it comes to the cinematic adaptations of his comics – recently talked about Kick-Ass 2’s prospects, saying that all the controversial scenes from the comic book counterpart would be making it into the film.

Universal May Acquire ‘Kick-Ass 2′; Director & Production Start Date Set

Both original Kick-Ass comic book writer Mark Millar and illustrator John Romita Jr. have been saying that the sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s film adaptation could begin production this summer.

Reports are now in that Vaughn has begun negotiations for Universal to both produce and distribute Kick-Ass 2 in theaters; moreover, we now have information about the basis for the sequel’s screenplay, who’s writing it and who Vaughn has “handpicked” to handle directorial duties – since he’s going to be busy overseeing pre-production on the untitled X-Men: First Class sequel for the remainder of this year.

When Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar claimed that Kick-Ass 2 will begin production this summer, most people waved it off as an empty promise – especially since the writer has (rightly) earned himself a reputation for speaking too soon when it comes to his comic book projects.

However, Kick-Ass comic series illustrator John Romita Jr. is also promising a Summer 2012 start date for the Kick-Ass movie sequel, with a May 2013 release date in mind. More so, Romita claims that several deals have been signed and sealed, as far as the personnel for Kick-Ass 2 is concerned.

The more egregious examples of the Wanted and Kick-Ass comic book writer-turned-producer making bold claims that amounted to nothing include: his comments about A-listers like Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp being pursued for the (currently stalled) Nemesis adaptation, and virtually everything he’s said to date about the followup to Matthew Vaughn’s film adaptation of the Kick-Ass comic, titled Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall.

Matthew Vaughn in Talks With Potential ‘Kick-Ass 2′ Writer/Director

One of the surprise hits among critics last year was the adaption of Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.’s Kick-Ass comic book mini-series. The Rated R superhero comedy of sorts was directed by Matthew Vaughn without studio backing due to fears about the riskiness of its extreme and controversial content.

Vaughn raised the money himself and after debuting a few Kick-Ass clips at San Diego Comic-Con, there was immediate interest and it was picked up by Lionsgate shortly thereafter. It opened in theaters on April 16, 2010 and brought in just under $100 million at the worldwide box office. So, what’s up with Kick-Ass 2?

Matthew Vaughn Considering Multiple Mark Millar Comic Projects

It’s almost a certainty that a sequel to this past summer’s X-Men: First Class will actually happen, at some point. However, the film’s director (Matthew Vaughn) isn’t waiting around for that comic book project – instead, he’s eying a couple of other superhero-oriented titles concocted by original Kick-Ass comic writer, Mark Millar.

The bad news for some fans is that Kick-Ass 2 isn’t one of the Millar projects Vaughn has his eye on. However, adaptations of the (somewhat) controversial writer’s comic Superior and upcoming graphic novel release, The Secret Service, are both being considered as possibilities for Vaughn’s next directorial effort.

Comic book writer Mark Millar is riding high on the success of his darkly comic superhero series Kick-Ass. The second part of the trilogy, which follows wannabe superhero and high-school student Dave Lizewski in his awkward attempts to fight crime, is currently in its third issue (out of a seven issue miniseries) and has consistently been a top-seller.

Of course, much of Millar’s success comes in large part from the popularity of the Kick-Ass film, which was directed by Matthew Vaughn. In addition to strong performances from its leads, including a starring turn from Chloe Moretz as the vicious child assassin Hit-Girl, it was Vaughn’s stylish direction that helped Kick-Ass make such a successful leap from the page to the big screen.

Why Do You Care if Critics Hate the Movies You Like?

[With all the heated discussion over our Green Lantern review (and pretty much any other superhero movie these days), we thought it might be an opportune time to resurrect this article from last year - Ed.]

“Opinions are like armpits – everyone has them and some of them stink,” so the old adage goes. This phrase rings doubly true when it comes to movie critics and their reviews of films.

The word “critic” is derived from the word “critique” which is defined by Dictionary.com as “a criticism or critical comment on some subject.” Film critics in general simply critique a movie based on their personal feelings and experiences. Why then do people get totally upset when a review for a film goes in the complete opposite direction of their personal experiences?

In other words: Why do people care if critics hate the movies they like?

‘Avatar’ Tops List of Most Pirated Movies in 2010

There are plenty of threats to the entertainment industry every year, but movie piracy consistently comes up as the biggest. Authorities continue to seek avenues to shut down the illegal downloading of movies, but apparently it is not enough. In 2010, nearly 100 million downloads were recorded – and those were just the top ten most pirated movies of the year.

The misconception with pirated movies is that those who watch on their computer are not actually going to the theater. For the most part, we can assume this is true. But when a film like Avatar comes in at the top spot with 16.5 million illegal downloads, one must wonder how many of those people also contributed to the movie’s record-breaking $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Why ‘Kick Ass’ is Kicking Butt in DVD/Blu-ray Sales

Lionsgate announced yesterday that Kick Ass “proved dominant across all revenue channels this past week.” The film debuted in the number one position in DVD and Blu-ray sales – as well as the top movie download on iTunes since its release August 3rd.

The critical success of Kick-Ass hinted at the potential for excellent performance in home entertainment sales. While it wasn’t a huge surprise, for many of us, it offers a welcome sense of validation. Those of us who believed in the film’s potential for ‘cult’ success were rewarded with quantifiable proof this week.

Mark Millar Talks ‘Kick-Ass 2′

Even before the film adaptation of his comic book Kick-Ass was released, writer Mark Millar was already talking to the cast and director Matthew Vaughn about his plans for a sequel. Most of the information being shared was simply hearsay, but the consensus seemed to be that regardless of the specifics, Kick-Ass 2 would most definitely be a darker story than its predecessor.

Speaking with MovieWeb about the DVD and Blu-ray release of Kick-Ass, Millar confirms he’s in the middle of writing his follow-up to the comic and hopes to have it finished by Christmas. He expects cameras to start rolling on its celluloid counterpart in April, as soon as Vaughn is finished with directorial duties on X-Men: First Class.
