‘Jurassic Park 4′ Won’t Be Directed By Steven Spielberg

Blockbuster maestro Steven Spielberg has been making headlines around the clock as of late, while he promotes the worldwide release of his awards-contending wartime melodrama, War Horse, and the U.S. release of his animated comic book adaptation, The Adventures of Tintin. During the press circuit, Spielberg has also been providing answers to reporters’ questions about his upcoming slate of films, including this year’s Abraham Lincoln biopic, the sci-fi thriller Robopocalypse, and the long-rumored Jurassic Park 4.

Spielberg previously made it known that he’s involved with the development of a fourth Jurassic Park flick, but it was previously not clear whether he was planning to direct the movie as well. According to the man himself, the answer is… no.

Kathleen Kennedy Updates ‘Jurassic Park 4′ & ‘Tintin’ Sequel

It’s a busy time for both Steven Spielberg and his longtime production collaborator, Kathleen Kennedy. The two have been working together ever since Raiders of the Lost Ark back in 1981 (where the latter served as an “associate” to Spielberg) and will continue to do so in the future – including on next year’s Lincoln, the still-theoretical Jurassic Park 4, and the already-in-development sequel to Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin adaptation.

Kennedy and Spielberg were recently at a New York press junket for their other 2011 release, War Horse. The former has revealed some interesting tidbits of information, with regards to both a fourth Jurassic Park flick and the next 3D mo-cap Tintin movie.

Spielberg Talks ‘Jurassic Park 4,’ ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ & ‘Crystal Skull’

Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin doesn’t arrive stateside until Christmas, but it’s already out in Europe and enjoying rave reviews. Indeed, many are calling it a return to form for Spielberg after the disappointing (to say the least) Indiana Jones 4.

Recently, while promoting Tintin, Spielberg also discussed the upcoming Jurassic Park 4 and Indiana Jones 5 – as well as the widely-criticized Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

It’s been a decade since we last had the opportunity to see a group of hapless scientists and morally bereft venture capitalists go mano-a-dino in a Jurassic Park film. In that time there has been a steady stream of rumors and speculation amongst the public about the storyline for a fourth film, and a (seeming) series of fits-and-starts in the production.

Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston has been the name most consistently attached to the project (other than film franchise creator Steven Spielberg and writer Mark Protosevich).

A few weeks ago we wrote about Jurassic Park 4, a project that’s seemingly been off and on for many years. At the time, director Joe Johnston, currently focused on the upcoming release of Captain America: The First Avenger, was rather confident the project would be moving forward. Jurassic Park 4: Joe Johnston Confident, Sam Neill Not

Believe it or not, we’re fast approaching the 10-year anniversary since the last Jurassic Park movie hit theaters, making it 18 years since the original Jurassic Park brought dinosaurs to life and blew our minds away. The first sequel, The Lost World, saw weaker reviews and performance at the box office than its predecessor, with Jurassic Park III dropping even more, but that hasn’t stopped the interest in developing a fourth franchise installment.

Director Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III) showed enthusiasm and confidence in Jurassic Park 4 throughout the last two years, indicating that he’d be working on the next Dino adventure once finishing duties on Captain America: The First Avenger. Franchise star Sam Neill however, has less faith in another sequel becoming a reality.

We’ve been hearing Jurassic Park 4 speculation for nearly a decade. Now, finally, we have confirmation of a new entry in the Jurassic Park franchise – a five issue comic book miniseries entitled Jurassic Park: Redemption.

Redemption takes place 13 years after the events of the original Jurassic Park storyline and features Tim and Lex Murphy – John Hammond’s grandchildren – now grown up, as they attempt to prevent the opening of a new Jurassic Park.

“It’s been 13 years since little Tim and Lex Murphy escaped from the island of Isla Nublar, and recent public opinion has reversed,with the world clamoring for authorities to re-open Jurassic Park! Spielberg in Talks for Dinosaur Show ‘Terra Nova’

With Jurassic Park 4 in a perpetual state of pre-production, Steven Spielberg may be set to get his dinosaur fix elsewhere: a Fox TV series entitled Terra Nova.

According to Variety, Terra Nova follows “a family from 100 years in the future who travel back in time 150 million years to the strange and inhospitable environs of prehistoric Earth.” Spielberg, along with FOX chairman Peter Chernin is in talks to executive -produce the upcoming sci-fi family-drama.

Though nothing is solid yet, 20th Century Fox is looking to make some quick moves in order to get Terra Nova into the program line-up, possibly foregoing a traditional pilot. Johnston Talks Captain America & New Jurassic Park Trilogy

Joe Johnston appears to be a very busy man – not only has he been working on The Wolfman for the last couple of years, but he also has The First Avenger: Captain America on the way for Marvel and he’s also been talking up, not one – but three new Jurassic Park films.

Johnston spoke with Box Office about his forthcoming Marvel superhero adaptation, and while he was vague in his answers, he did give away a few good nuggets of information.

Harry Knowles at Ain’t It Cool News put up an interview from a while back on the set of The Wolfman with director Joe Johnston. In the interview they discussed a bunch of his previous works and a bit about Jurassic Park 4 for which he is attached to helm.

This was before it was announced that Johnston would be directing The First Avenger: Captain America so unfortunately, that topic does not come up.

Producer Frank Marshall Talks Indy 5 & Other Projects

Oscar-nominated producer Frank Marshall has recently spoken with both Coming Soon and Empire about the projects he has on the horizon. The Indiana Jones, Bourne and Sixth Sense producer has been in the business for over 30 years and is still going strong today, continually adding to a (mostly) solid resume.

The biggest area of interest on Marshall’s to-do list is the next Indiana Jones installment (which Shia LaBeouf recently said Steven Spielberg had “cracked the story,” for); in speaking with Empire about Indiana Jones 5, Marshall didn’t go so far as to say the movie has officially been greenlit, but says that the project could get to the concept/script development stage soon:

Is Jurassic Park 4 Extinct?

Although it was never one of those blockbuster sequels for which people were literally counting the days until release, I figured audiences would nonetheless still flock to see Jurassic Park 4.

That is once Universal Pictures got around to making it.

While recently doing press for their upcoming release The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the husband-wife producing team of Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy revealed the project (which has been in development hell for years – going through multiple screenwriters in the process) is dead.

As Kennedy explained:

“No… I don’t know. You know, when Crichton passed away, I sorta felt maybe that’s it. Maybe that’s a sign that we don’t mess with it.”

I can’t really argue with that logic.

Then again, I also can’t help but think when Universal finds themselves without a tentpole, they might turn to Jurassic Park 4 to fill in ...

For years now there have been rumors of a fourth Jurassic Park film. The first three have made an absolute killing at the box office, so it’s quite surprising that there hasn’t been a great deal of movement on a new installment.

I watched the first (and best) Jurassic Park recently and I was surprised at how well it looks, almost fifteen years later. Fifteen years, man do I feel old. The Lost World was a terrible film, and the book is even worse. I hope that to this day, Steven Spielberg and Michael Crichton feel ashamed for being behind such terrible work. Jurassic Park III wasn’t bad, but the ending seemed to be missing. It’s almost as if Joe Johnston decided to drop a reel, Grindhouse style.

Absurd News Of The Day: Jurassic Park 4 = Armed Dinosaurs

Talk about beating a dead horse (or is that milking a dead cow?)… The rumor (one can only hope this is a rumor) is that Jurassic Park 4 is moving forward and that in this sequel the government will train the dinosaurs to use weapons.

(pause for awkward silence)

I kid you not, at least accoring to Bloody-Disgusting.com. They also said that Laura Dern will be back but that Sam Neill won’t (good call, Sam).

I guess that a velociraptor or a T-Rex just isn’t dangerous enough on it’s own.

Why doesn’t an idea like this sound as dumb to the person who approves it to move forward as it does to the rest of us?

Yeesh.
