Dwayne Johnson is Officially in Talks for ‘Journey 3′

New Line’s recently-announced decision to greenlight a followup to its money-raking, family-friendly 3D flick Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (which should soon pass the $300 million mark at the global box office) came as no surprise.

Neither, for that matter, is there much surprise surrounding the confirmation that Journey 2 star Dwayne “(Still) The Rock” Johnson has entered talks to reprise his role as pec-poppin’ adventurer Hank in Journey 3. A new report from The Wrap also suggests that Johnson’s younger costar (and onscreen stepson) Josh Hutcherson is also expected to return for the third installment in the Journey franchise.

With a decent critical reception, $240 million box office take worldwide and tons more in the bank from from the back-end (home video and TV deals, etc.), it was clear that New Line would be pushing for a sequel to the family-friendly hit, Journey to the Center of the Earth. Unfortunately for fans and the studio, we found out back in May that star Brendan Fraser may not return for the sequel, now titled Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

At the time it was thought that Fraser may not be back due to the director change, having taken part in the first Journey to the Center of the Earth in large part due to the involvement of Eric Brevig who won’t be back for the sequel. ...

Upcoming Movie Release Dates Announced

Several studios have announced a number of official release dates for in-development films set to debut over the next couple years. Surprisingly, only four of the 16 are sequels. In a time when it seems every other “new” movie is a sequel or reboot, that number is quite pleasing.

There are a few comedies, a honey-loving bear, a deadly virus, and plenty more hitting theaters between now and 2013. The next three years are full of some epic comic book adaptations and summer blockbusters. But not every film is geared for the geeks and fanboys.

Dwayne Johnson’s Race To Witch Mountain captured the top spot with an estimated weekend gross of $25 million. There was once a time that people thought that “The Rock” was going to inherit Arnold Schwarzenegger’s action throne – not it appears that he’s the new family Eddie Murphy.

It looks like people aren’t watching the Watchmen – with a drop off of 67% showing that the film does not have legs. With a weekend of $18 million and a total take of $86 million far from a financial disaster, the film must be classed as an underachiever.
