[With all the heated discussion over our Green Lantern review (and pretty much any other superhero movie these days), we thought it might be an opportune time to resurrect this article from last year - Ed.]

“Opinions are like armpits – everyone has them and some of them stink,” so the old adage goes. This phrase rings doubly true when it comes to movie critics and their reviews of films.

The word “critic” is derived from the word “critique” which is defined by Dictionary.com as “a criticism or critical comment on some subject.” Film critics in general simply critique a movie based on their personal feelings and experiences. Why then do people get totally upset when a review for a film goes in the complete opposite direction of their personal experiences?

In other words: Why do people care if critics hate the movies they like?

The Last Airbender Leads 2011 Razzie Award ‘Winners’

It’s that time of year again, when the Oscars reward various filmmakers, films, and actors for their extraordinary cinematic work, and the Razzies punish various filmmakers, films, and actors for their especially horrendous cinematic work.

Last night, the 31st Annual Razzie Awards were held at Hollywood’s Barnsdall Gallery Theater. To no one’s surprise, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender was the big “winner” (or maybe “loser” is more appropriate here) of the night, taking home the most Razzies. Alas, it wasn’t a clean sweep, as Sex and the City 2 took home several awards that Airbender was nominated for.

Nominees for the 31st Annual Razzie Awards have been announced and M. Night Shyamalan’s much-derided TV show adaptation, The Last Airbender, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse are the leaders in the contest to be officially ordained the “best of the worst” in 2010.

2011 Razzies Shortlist: The Worst Films and Performances of 2010

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31^st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24^th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

The categories this year are pretty much the same as last year – Worst Screenplay, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actor/Actress, Worst ...

Did you regret spending money on an awful movie this year? Are you aching to share your thoughts on the head-shaking, face-slapping, run-for-the-door flops of 2010? This is your chance – but not until we give you our choices of the 10 worst movies of 2010.

The box office had its fair share of behemoths this year, but not all were well-received by fans and critics. Poor movies come in all different styles – some are filled with explosions and fancy CGI meant to distract you from the weak plot, while others beg for laughs with humorless jokes. Those two types of theatrical failures, and more, are accounted for in our list.

While next week has some of the most exciting home video releases of the year, this week is reasonably entertaining. Specific crowds will be pleased with some of the new DVD and Blu-ray releases, but the big picture is relatively weak.

There is only one release from this year that might make a few dollars on the shelves, but even that is questionable. Let’s face it, few people praised Jonah Hex. The other notable titles are mostly re-releases that deserve a spot in your collection.

Comic-Con 2010 Saturday Schedule: Our Film Panel Picks

It’s Sunday, which means that only one more Comic-Con-less weekend is left before the big-show. Much like Thursday and Friday’s schedules, there’s more than enough options to sate even the most avid movie fans.

Saturday may be the most impressive day of the entire Con with panels for Green Lantern, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Cowboys & Aliens – not to mention Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. Much like Friday’s events, make sure to think ahead as to what you’d like to check out – and get in line early.

Movie News Wrap Up: June 29, 2010

Toy Story 3 remained the box office king over the weekend after grossing $59 million on its second weekend. The Tom Hanks voiced film has now brought in a huge $226 million. A final gross of $400 million is all but certain.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: June 20, 2010

This week:

Toy Story shows Jonah Hex that making money at the box office isn’t child’s play; Miley Cyrus decides to Wake; Louis Leterrier loses Gravity; Robert Downey Jr. is the new Steve McQueen in Yucatan; Sam Worthington and McG Mean War and lots more.

Box Office

Toy Story 3 did the massive business that everybody anticipated. The second animated sequel in the fifteen year old franchise should score a massive $111 million over the weekend. The Disney/Pixar film has the added bonus of showing on 3D screens, but it should also enjoy strong legs and play quite well into the summer.

The Karate Kid is kicking serious butt at the box office. The Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan film should have a weekend take of just under $29 million. By the time alarm clocks go off on Monday ...

I didn’t set my hopes very high walking into the theater to watch Jonah Hex. I knew it was based on a DC comic book character and that was the extent of my knowledge on the subject. I was a clean slate, my mind a lump of unformed clay just waiting for director Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!) to wrap his hands around it like a scene from Ghost, molding it into something exciting and entertaining.

Well Hayward is no Swayze, because I’m sad to say that Jonah Hex is NOT going to be the surprise hit of the summer. The film’s story and pacing clods along like a horse who’s thrown a shoe, unbeknownst to the rider.

New ‘Jonah Hex’ Image Gallery & Plot Synopsis

In anticipation of next week’s release of the supernatural comic book western Jonah Hex, Warner Bros. has released several new high-resolution images and an official synopsis for the film.

Jonah Hex features Josh Brolin (True Grit) as the titular character who – unlike in the original comic – develops strange, unnatural powers following the murder of his family and his own near-death experience at the hands of a dastardly villain played by John Malkovich (Transformers 3). Along for the ride are stars Megan Fox (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and Michael Fassbender (Centurion).

New Action Packed Jonah Hex Trailer

Last week, we shared some “explosive” new TV spots for Jonah Hex. Today, we’ve got the second official trailer for the movie and it delivers an even bigger action punch.

The new trailer, which comes our way via IGN, features much of the same content from the first Jonah Hex trailer, but with a few important additions.

For one thing, the second trailer doesn’t offer as much insight into Jonah Hex’s origins. In fact, there is hardly any footage featuring John Malkovich, who plays Hex’s nemesis, Quentin Turnbull.

However, the second trailer does flesh out some of the supernatural elements of the film, which, it should be noted, do not exist in the comic book version of the character. Also, a whole bunch of stuff gets blowed up real good! ...

New TV Spots For ‘The A-Team’ & ‘Jonah Hex’

20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. have each unleashed two new TV spots for their summer tentpole pics, The A-Team and Jonah Hex – all four of which were designed to make it clear to moviegoers that both films will have them up to their ears in explosive set pieces, over-the-top stunts, and occasional one-liners.

First, we have two new spots for The A-Team, which finds Liam Neeson (Clash of the Titans), Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), Sharlito Copley (District 9), and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (…) as a group of wrongly accused soldiers-turned-mercenaries on a quest to clear their names.

New ‘Buried’ & ‘Jonah Hex’ Movie Posters

If you like Ryan Reynolds or Megan Fox than we’ve got two new posters for two upcoming movies movies just for you.

The first is for Ryan Reynolds’ Buried, an indie flick directed by Rodrigo Cortés about a U.S. contractor working in Iraq who ends up buried alive in a coffin with only his mobile phone and a lighter. The second is for the comic book adaptation Jonah Hex, starring Josh Brolin as the title character alongside Megan Fox.

Buried premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it was met with great critical reception and later picked up by Lionsgate for distribution. First Showing nabbed an exclusive teaser poster for Buried which really emphasizes the predicament Ryan Reynolds finds himself in.

Today we have a nice assortment of movie clips and images from four upcoming films, all of which look pretty good – Predators, Shrek Forever After, The Losers and Jonah Hex. We could have put all these items in their own separate posts, but honestly, it’s just so much easier for you to find them all in one place.

First up is a couple of featurettes from the third installment of the Predators franchise. If you count AvP and AvP: Requiem then technically it’s the fifth installment, but I still say it’s the third. The Predators teaser trailer played at SXSW earlier this year and the full trailer pretty much blew everyone’s anticipation levels off the charts.

Jonah Hex Trailer & Release Date Confirmed

Despite having an incredibly awesome actor in Josh Brolin, and an incredibly famous actress in Megan Fox, the production and release date for the upcoming Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment adaptation of Jonah Hex has been both questionable and under the radar.

We’ve seen very little on the comic book movie about the scarred antihero in the old West, and with a release date currently set for this summer and very little to show for it, there’s obvious concern from fans and media about the status of Jonah Hex. Fret no longer Hex fans, as the movie appears to still be coming out as planned and first official trailer will be coming at us soon!

Warner Bros. Banking On DC Comics After Harry Potter

It looks like comic book fans have some stake in the Harry Potter franchise after all. Warner Bros. Entertainment President Alan Horn made a tiny little comment at ShoWest that’s got people in full Montgomery Burns mode (Excellent!). With four DC Comics films in the rear view mirror and at least five on the way, the snippet reported by /Film would seem obvious, but means a whole lot more coming from Horn.

“As we ease out of Harry Potter, we hope to bring you the excitement of the DC [Comics] Library.”

There you have it. Their little magician is all grown-up and it’s time to show him the door. Frankly, I’m surprised they don’t just come up with their own stories, considering WB is all out of books ...
