The John Carter Super Bowl trailer took an odd approach to selling Disney’s pricey literary adaptation, which the Mouse House has poured some $250 million and several years worth of time and creative effort into. Considering just how massive in scale the special effects-driven adventure is, one might have expected a TV promo that played up the film more as a visually-majestic sci-fi epic treatment of Edgar Rice Burrough’s famous source material.

Andrew Stanton had a difficult task adapting Edgar Rice Burroughs “A Princess of Mars” into a live-action film, balancing the maintaining of source material with the need to make an accessible film for Disney that casual moviegoers can get behind. The special effects affair is led by MVP Taylor Kitsch (also featured prominent in the Battleship Super Bowl commercial) and Lynn Collins, both of whom starred in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

‘John Carter’ Featurette: More Comedy, Less Sci-Fi Action

The comparatively threatening Martian creatures and provocative elements in author Edgar Rice Burrough’s original John Carter novels have been made somewhat “friendlier” in Walt Disney Picture’s upcoming film adaptation – be they the 12-foot tall native inhabitants of Mars, Carter’s “Martian dog” Woola, or even the thunderous White Apes which the hero battles in a death match.

Previously-released John Carter promos has been primarily focused on footage featuring lots of CGI spectacle and grand-scale sci-fi action. Today, we have a new featurette that offers an early taste of the film’s approach to humor (among other things).

‘John Carter’: Conceptual Art & Super Bowl TV Spot Teaser

It’s a recurring tradition for the biggest blockbuster titles hitting the silver screen in any year to be promoted during the respective Super Bowl, and 2012 will be no exception. While a handful of anticipated titles are reportedly NOT going to be featured in TV spots during Super Bowl XLVI (like The Dark Knight Rises) other tentpole pics are definitely going to make an appearance – including, Walt Disney Pictures’ costly (re: $250 million) John Carter adaptation.

Today, we have some conceptual artwork from the Mouse House’s classic sci-fi literary flick, available for viewing – along with a teaser for the actual John Carter Super Bowl spot (and yes, we know that a teaser for a commercial is kind of a stretch).

Taylor Kitsch Talks ‘John Carter’ Storyline, Action, & Alien Creatures

There’s a big question mark looming over the head of Disney’s costly John Carter. It is, after all, an adaptation of a classic and highly-influential sci-fi literary series, with Andrew Stanton (of Finding Nemo and WALL·E fame) directing a pretty admirable cast. However, early trailers and TV spots for the film have been big on visual spectacle, but not-so-promising when it comes to dialogue and acting.

Perhaps the biggest potential hit-or-miss aspect of John Carter will be that of the titular character himself, as brought to life by Friday Night Lights hunk Taylor Kitsch. That’s why a new interview with the actor should be of great interest to die-hard John Carter fans (and casual sci-fi lovers alike).

While The Avengers remains Disney’s most ambitious tentpole film of 2012, the studio’s biggest gamble is undoubtedly John Carter, a big-budget CGI/Live-action adaptation of the John Carter of Mars novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

New ‘John Carter’ Banners; Andrew Stanton Talks Title Change

Walt Disney Pictures has been working harder to heighten awareness of John Carter, its upcoming adaptation of Edgar Rich Burrough’s famous sci-fi/fantasy literary series. The studio has released numerous images and a full-length trailer to promote the expensive, CGI-heavy project.

Today, we have a trio of new banners for John Carter to share with you, along with a straightforward explanation from Oscar-winning director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, WALL·E) as to how the project’s title evolved from A Princess of Mars (ie. the title of Burrough’s first John Carter novel) to John Carter of Mars - and then, just John Carter.

‘John Carter’ Trailer Offers More Martians

Disney is placing a lot of their 2012 movie hope$ on the big screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter, a film being brought to theaters (in 3D) by Andrew Stanton, the writer/director of acclaimed Pixar films like WALL•E and Finding Nemo.

The John Carter teaser trailer took an unusual approach to introducing the film, offering viewers a slow-paced, moody and atmospheric look at the world of Mars, rather than a kinetic action-heavy flurry of footage. Today’s John Carter trailer, by comparison, is pretty much all rapid shots of action and/or the visual effects that are being utilized to bring the world of Mars (and her many inhabitants) to life.

New ‘Underworld 4′ and ‘John Carter’ Images: Vampires & Aliens [Updated]

Today we have several images from two upcoming titles that (in different ways) straddle the often fine line between science fiction and fantasy: the sequel Underworld: Awakening and the literary adaptation, John Carter.

Kate Beckinsale’s icy blue-eyed vampire warrior gal, Selene, looks vivacious as ever while posing in black leather in the latest still frames released from the fourth Underworld flick. By comparison, the John Carter images offer some complimentary eye candy, in the form of the muscular (and often topless) Taylor Kitsch as the eponymous Civil War vet – along with some unusual creatures and alien airships from the film.

‘John Carter’ Image Reveals A Mighty White Ape

Disney has been fairly quiet when it comes to marketing its upcoming (expensive) sci-fi project John Carter, an adaptation of the first novel in Edgar Rice Burrough’s classic John Carter literary series. The studio previewed footage from the film at the 2011 D23 Expo and unveiled a teaser trailer this past summer, but casual moviegoers still seem by and large oblivious to the film’s existence or background.

However, longtime John Carter novel fans are definitely intrigued to see the movie – and the latest image from the film, depicting a Martian “White Ape” in battle, should only stoke their fires of anticipation.

Disney’s D23 Expo was held this past weekend, showcasing preview footage and panels for upcoming Disney movies like Marvel’s The Avengers, Pixar’s Brave and Jason Segel’s new Muppets movie.

Disney Schedules Marvel Movies for 2014; ‘John Carter’ in IMAX 3D

Walt Disney Pictures is officially taking over the business side of the Marvel movie universe in the future – beginning with next year’s The Avengers and then Iron Man 3 in 2013, which the Mouse House (not Paramount) will market and distribute in theaters.

The company has gone ahead and settled on release dates for two Marvel titles that… don’t actually have titles yet, while also setting up next year’s sci-fi flick, John Carter, for release in the IMAX format.

‘John Carter’ Trailer Teases An Imaginative Sci-Fi Adventure

Walt Disney Pictures has slowly begun to build anticipation for John Carter, an adaptation of Edgar Rich Burrough’s classic literary sci-fi series. Today marks the next big step in the film’s marketing campaign, as an official teaser trailer has been released online.

Andrew Stanton (Wall-E, Finding Nemo) is making his live-action directorial debut with John Carter, which seeks to both recreate the period aesthetic of Burrough’s original creation and offer moviegoers a visually unique other-worldly adventure. Based on the early footage from the film, it appears prepped to do just that.

‘John Carter’ Director On Set Design, Characters & Trilogy Plans

There’s been a very controlled stream of information that’s been released in regards to Disney’s John Carter, the adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ famous series of sci-fi novels about the planet Mars. Even the title of film (formerly John Carter of Mars) has been trimmed in order to seemingly downplay the sci-fi nature of the project (a curious decision, to say the least).

We’re approaching the point now where a teaser trailer for Disney’s John Carter adaptation is bound to hit theaters sooner rather than later. As proof of that, a teaser poster has now been released for Pixar director Andrew Stanton’s adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars sci-fi novel series.

The new one-sheet reveals little about the John Carter film – other than the fact that star Taylor Kitsch still has his customary long hair – but with extensive post-production work still being done to bring the film’s extraterrestrial settings and characters to life, that’s to be expected.

‘John Carter of Mars’ Update From Director Andrew Stanton

Things have been quiet on the news front for John Carter of Mars since filming began over a year ago. Disney played release date chicken with FOX before scheduling its sci-fi flick for a different date than Ridley Scott’s Alien-inspired flick, Prometheus, but otherwise no one has heard anything recently about Pixar director Andrew Stanton’s fantastical project.

Now Stanton has opened up a bit about his progress on John Carter of Mars, which is based primarily off the first novel in Tarzan author Edgar Rice Burrough’s other-wordly, 11-volume Barsoom series.

Two very different projects from the Mouse House – their adaptation of author Edgar Rice Burrough’s John Carter of Mars series and the feature-length treatment of Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie – will arrive in theaters during the first half of 2012.

Frankenweenie will be unleashed (heh) first on March 9th of that year. Hmmm… a Walt Disney Pictures 3D, family-friendly production that was directed by Tim Burton is being released just two weeks before the official start of spring. Is the company perhaps hoping to replicate the success of this year’s Alice in Wonderland?

The Disney adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of novels, John Carter of Mars, and hopeful trilogy of films said to be comparable in scale to Pirates of the Caribbean, has finally entered production. I say finally not because of scheduling issues but because this property has been close to development for several decades but no one could make it happen till now. Thank you, Disney.

If you think about it, John Carter first appeared in “A Princess of Mars” back in 1912 – nearly a full century ago.
