Poster Friday: Youth in Revolt, Invictus, Heavy Metal & More!

Happy Friday everyone! For the last Friday of October before Halloween weekend, we’ve again gathered the latest posters to come out for this week’s poster round-up.

Screen Rant’s wall this week now includes new one-sheets for Nowhere Man, Séraphine, Cabin Fever 2, Invictus, Collapse, House of the Devil, Late Fee, Jennifer’s Body, Zombieland, Everybody’s Fine, The Fouth Kind, The Road, Kniga Masterov (Book of Masters), The Bleeding, Gentlemen Broncos and Youth in Revolt.

In addition to that, we have a little somethin’ somethin’ for Disney’s A Christmas Carol and Heavy Metal.

Let’s get to it.

To start, here’s a poster for the John Lennon biopic, titled Nowhere Boy which stars Aaron Johnson as legendary Beatle.

Nowhere Man opens in the UK on December 25 and is directed by Sam Taylor Wood.

Scream Awards 2009: A Report From Front Row Center

This past Saturday, October 17th, I attended my second year of Spike TV’s annual Scream Awards. Not only did I attend, but I had been hand-picked by the casting director to sit front row center for the show! As a fan-focused awards show, it’s much more enjoyable being seated amongst JJ Abrams, Karl Urban, Elijah Wood and Woody Harrelson. My favorite personal surprise of the evening came when the Best Science Fiction Actress nominees were being announced. I cheered (maybe a little too loudly for my girlfriend’s tastes) for Eliza Dushku when her name was announced, only to discover she was sitting right in front of me. She turned around and flashed me her lovely smile. Good thing my girlfriend isn’t the overly-jealous type.

As for the show itself, it seems as though the winners have already been leaked online, and the best surprises have been revealed, even on Spike’s own website. So keep in mind there be spoilers here.

Starting off the show was the “Most Anticipated Movie” award. I’m sure everyone there was utterly surprised by the winner. After a black and white checkerboard “red” carpet, and a Wonderland-esqe stage design, who would have guessed it would be Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland?

In all seriousness though, having Johnny Depp there was very cool. After his extremely brief appearance at the San Diego Comic Con panel this summer, I half-expected that to be his only appearance for this show. Thankfully I was wrong and he came back onstage one more time to present the Rock Immortal award to Keith Richards. Johnny was very gracious on his way up to the small center stage, shaking hands with many of us in the pit next to the stage. Keith Richards was very spry on stage, bounding up the steps to receive his award from his former on-screen “son.” Johnny reiterated the old axiom that after the End of the World, “all that will be left are cockroaches… and Keith Richards”. Take that, Nancy Reagan!

Megan Fox, as I’m sure you all have already heard around the net, was apparently trying to smooth things over with Michael Bay. Here’s her speech:

“I would like to take this moment to actually say something genuine. There have been a lot of false reports concerning how I feel about this movie and I just want to be very clear that I’ve always felt that I am a very ordinary part of an extraordinary film. These movies took me out of obscurity and they gave me a career and I am completely grateful to everyone involved with this franchise. I don’t know why you guys keep voting for me for these things. I don’t feel like I deserve them but thank you and I love you so much, thank you.”

At first, it seemed as though she was setting us up for a SNL-style gag. I thought we’d see her then jokingly refer to Jennifer’s Body, since she never once uttered the names Transformers or Michael Bay. But then, after the disappointing box-office on Jennifer’s Body, it’s no surprise she wants to be a part of Transformers 3. Her speech did sound genuine, it just sounded odd not hearing either name.

Vampires and Werewolves were very well represented this year, from stand-out series True Blood, to the new movie Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant. But judging by the cheers, it was Twilight that had the best reception. Representing the franchise was Taylor Lautner, star of the upcoming The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The footage shown to us was more behind-the-scenes than actual movie footage. After Depp and Lautner, my girlfriend had all but forgotten my earlier Dushku encounter.

Harrison Ford presented the Best Director award to JJ Abrams. It would be exceedingly cool to see these two Hollywood titans do a project together. I wonder if having Ford in the next Star Trek movie would cause some kind of mass nerd head-explosions? William Shatner was also present at the show. He practically begged JJ to be in the next movie. I would have given anything to have been a fly on the wall of that green room! Just imagining Shatner and Ford having drinks and talking shop, I’m reminded of a line from Free Enterprise. When the young character in that movie complains that a kid at school “said that Han Solo was cooler than Captain Kirk”, Shatner, playing himself, remarked “kick the little f&@ker’s @$$”. Seriously though, it would be pretty mind-blowing to see Ford play a Trek villain.

Critics Split By Gender On Jennifer’s Body

So the Megan “hot Transformers chick” Fox-starring, Diablo “I wrote Juno” Cody-written movie Jennifer’s Body opened this weekend to rather weak box office (the estimate at the moment is less than $7 million). As I write this article the film is scoring 41% positive rating on the Tomatometer over at RottenTomatoes.com with 99 reviews so far. While that is certainly not a good score, it’s far from that of some recent stinkers (Final Destination: 27%, All About Steve: 6%, Sorority Row: 26%).

What prompted this article however was what I was seeing on Twitter as far as comments about the film… women seemed to be praising it while guys (myself included) were slamming it. So I decided to do an informal (and very crude) statistical analysis – overall what did male movie critics think about the film as opposed to female reviewers?

There were many more reviews by men (77) than women (26). The majority of these were culled from the Rotten Tomatoes site, and I included a few (from both sides) from reviewers I know who are not part of the R/T scoring system.

Here’s the breakdown:

Male movie reviewers: 39% liked it, 61% disliked it.
Female movie reviewers: 54% liked it, 46% disliked it.

From the male side of the aisle, the negative comments about the film focus on the opinion that while Jennifer’s Body sets out to be both funny and scary, it succeeds at neither. However the film seems to speak more to female critics than to the man side of the aisle based on the focus upon girl/girl friendships, and particularly on showing just how cruel women can be to each other, never mind guys.

If you’re a guy, you’re probably thinking “huh?” right now, so here are a few statements from the women’s perspective expounding on just what the heck that means…

Genevieve Blaber (writer for LatinoReview.com and her own blog IWentThere) says:

“This movie deserves a lot of love… Unfortunately, with Jennifer’s Body I’m seeing (and hearing) many males write off the parts of the film they don’t understand and, as a consequence, the entire film. What they should be doing instead, is trying to understand it as a seldom given look at the inner workings of women and their relationships with each other.”

Annalee Newitz of io9.com had this to say about the movie:

“‘Jennifer’s Body’ is a movie about toxic friendships between women. By placing this story in the context of a monster movie, it also does something interesting. First, it acknowledges that women are horribly dangerous… More importantly, it acknowledges that women are dangerous to other women. Not just in a mean girls way, but in an ‘I will rip your lungs out’ way… This is a movie about female wrath. And it’s not the clean, sympathetic wrath we saw in ‘Thelma and Louise‘; it’s not the trampy blankness we wanked over in ‘Species.’ It’s ugly, wrong, powerful wrath. The kind that builds empires and destroys towns. And men are irrelevant to this wrath, in the same way Jennifer’s life was irrelevant to the guys in Low Shoulder who murdered her.”

And “EruditeChick” over at AllThingsFanGirl.com explains:

“Case in point, the necklace moment. A trinket that holds no power other than what it represents to the girls, the act of its removal shocks Jennifer out of her attack, and undoes her. A BFF necklace. They probably got them at Claire’s. When they were ten. But in the world of the film, it is a mystical amulet, as powerful as the knife used in Jennifer’s murder or the words spoken over her before the act. Most of the men I’ve heard talk about the film mention that moment in particular as being cringe-worthy and corny, and most of all bizarre. I have not yet spoken to a girl for whom that scene did not resonate, didn’t hit something deep in them. Even if you never had one of those necklaces, you know what it means, the way you know what BFF can mean.“

Now of course there were men who liked the film and women who disliked it, but there’s a definite overall slant depending on the chromosome make up of the reviewer. In retrospect, what the ladies above are saying makes sense – but I still think this could have been done far better and that a film could have been made which addresses these issues while appealing to both women AND men.

Short Version: Overall Jennifer’s Body is just a boring movie – punctuated by occasional humor and fewer scares.

Let’s just get this right out of the way: Megan Fox does not appear naked in Jennifer’s Body.

So if that’s the main reason you want to go see this film, you’re out of luck. If the other reason you want to see the film is for the girl/girl makeout scene – there is a very brief scene of a kiss between Megan and Amanda Seyfried, and it’s shot in such an extreme close-up that for all I know they might have had “stunt doubles” do it.

Now that we have that out of the way, on to the review.

Megan Fox plays Jennifer, the uber-hot, like, totally popular babe at high school that girls envy and boys want desperately. She’s a typical movie hot-chick high school cheerleader, caring more about parties, guys and what she looks like than things like schoolwork. Her long-time best friend is Needy Lesnicky (played by Amanda Seyfried, obvious pretty-girl-hiding-behind-glasses-bad-hair-and-bad-clothes). It’s obvious quite early on that their friendship is not exactly balanced, with Needy cowtowing to Jennifer in every way, but happy to do it due to a misplaced sense of loyalty and the fact that being so UNpopular she of course gets a thrill out of being the popular girl’s best friend.

Jennifer being Jennifer, she gets into groupie mode over the lead singer of a visiting band (played by Adam Brody). She persuades Needy to ditch her “good guy” boyfriend Chip (Johnny Simmons) and to go with her to the only bar in town to watch the band play. By the end of the evening, Jennifer ends up taking off with the boys in the band, who are obviously not exactly Boy Scouts. Later that evening Jennifer turns up bruised and bloody at Needy’s house, acting strange, creepy and threatening.

Soon thereafter a series of grisly murders invade the small, usually quiet town, and Needy starts putting two and two together. Of course her boyfriend won’t believe her when she tries to tell him what’s going on, our main characters end up in grave danger, etc., etc.

Jennifer’s Body was written by Diablo Cody, the woman who wrote the critically acclaimed Juno – so despite the fact that this film was starring Megan Fox, people were hoping for something worthwhile. However where the dialog in Juno flowed easily and naturally, and the wit came easy, here it all seems forced and you get the sense that they’re just trying too hard to be hip – and failing.

You want an example? How about “They’re agents of Satan… with cool haircuts.”

Oh, hang on a sec – I’ve got to step away from the keyboard due to the non-stop laughter that won’t let me type.

The movie actually starts to get interesting once the creature appears and the killing starts – actually that’s when it starts to get at least a bit funny. There were maybe two or three times that I laughed during the entire film. So OK, but is it scary, then? No, not really. Right at the start of the film there is the weakest “jump scare” I have ever seen in a film, and while there are maybe a couple of horror movie-worthy scenes, overall it doesn’t work on that level either. I will admit that the smile that Megan Fox gave when she first showed up covered in blood DID creep me the hell out.

There were a few laughs here and there, one early on when Jennifer heads off in the band van and one funny bit during an awkward teenage sex scene (no, it doesn’t involve Fox, sorry).

And then there’s Megan Fox. For the guys, this still from the film shows more of her than you’ll see in the entire movie, so you can just get your fill right here:

Frankly, based on what I’ve read about Fox and from her in the form of interviews, it seemed to me that the character she was playing was pretty close to just being herself – not much of a stretch. The Jennifer character seemed so close to reports of those who’ve worked with Fox, and based on the sort of statements she herself has made – I just couldn’t buy into the character. I just saw Megan being Megan (except of course for the whole fangs and eating entrails thing).

Highlights? J.K. Simmons appears here and once again plays a slightly off-center supporting character. Love the man’s delivery of even the most basic lines of dialog. Amanda Seyfried did a nice job as the nerdy protagonist, and Johnny Simmons was convincingly sincere. And Adam Brody did some scenery chewing in his brief scenes that made it look like he was having fun with the role.

As Annalee Newitz of io9.com pointed out, Jennifer’s Body is about the horror of abusive female friendships instead of the more common female sexuality angle – and it’s commendable that writer Diablo Cody and director Karyn Kusama wanted to try something different… it’s too bad that it just doesn’t work.

But hey if you just can’t get enough of Megan Fox on the big screen and acting sexy, supposedly hip dialog, awkward teenage sex, a bit of gore and mild scares, then maybe this movie’s for you. Me? I was bored and for a 102 minute movie it felt WAY longer.

Oh, if you do go, stay through the credits for some “closure.”

The Scoop: Pretty little starlet Kate Beckinsale takes on this graphic novel turned killer-thriller. Beckinsale plays a U.S. Marshall investigating Antarctica’s first homicide as the sun sets for six entire months. Will she find the killer in the cold dark before he finds her?

SR Says: The trailer paints this movie as more X-Files than detective story, which could confuse some on the premise. However, cold weather and hot Beckinsale = worth the ticket price?

See it? Maybe.

The Informant!

The Scoop: Director Steven Soderbergh helms an all-star cast providing you “a mix of A Beautiful Mind and The Insider.” Damon plays the exec of a agri-business giant who goes overboard working as a snitch for the Feds. It’s bi-polar, whistle-blowing storytelling at it’s best!

SR Says: It’s going to be amazing to see what this cast can pull off under Soderbergh’s direction with such an involved script.

See it? Yes.

SR Says: Depends on how you feel about Megan Fox looking both sexy and grotesque in one film.

See it? If you like teen horror flicks, or are a devotee of Cody.

The Scoop: Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid star as two astronauts who wake up on an abandoned future spacecraft and have no idea what’s happened. As with all things in movies, time unveils the “truth” of what they face – a ship full of crazy space monsters.

SR Says: Dennis Quaid has had some woofers lately, but Ben Foster always offers something unique. MMA fans may recognize cast member Cung Le as the current Strikeforce Middleweight Champion, which guarantees at least two raucous fights in this thriller.

See it? Yes.

Surrogates

The Scoop: In a future where people live life through robotic surrogates, Bruce Willis plays a cop who must venture back into the real world to investigate a string of crimes involving people dying while connected to their Surrogates.

SR Says: Jonathan Mostow is an underrated director, and seeing Bruce “alive” again, with great f/x and a bit of gravitas sounds like a great combination.

See it? Absolutely.

With the media circus surrounding Megan Fox at every step, especially with that little movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen eating box office money for breakfast and her controversial remarks about that film and director Michael Bay, I expect this movie to do very well for its genre.

Bloody Good Red Band Trailer for ‘Jennifer’s Body’

From the mind of Diablo Cody (who wrote the indie-success Juno) comes the teen-horror film Jennifer’s Body, starring Transformers hottie Megan Fox. The film sees Fox swap running from giant robots to preying on horny high school boys as a demon-possessed cheerleader. It sounds like a neat horror premise that promises to have a good mix of horror, raunchiness and dark/tongue-in-cheek comedy.

Today we get the first ever trailer for the film – a red-band, NSFW trailer that makes it clear what kind of film Jennifer’s Body is turning out to be.

Before the inevitable “safe” trailer for Jennifer’s Body hits the web and movie theaters, the film’s writer (Cody), director (Karyn Kusama) and producer (Jason Reitman, director of Juno) sent Shock Till You Drop the exclusive red band trailer to show off the TRUE nature of the movie. Cody, Kusama and Reitman also sent the following little FYI note along with the exclusive:

“Fox is putting a trailer of Jennifer’s Body in front of Bruno this Friday. Great, right? Only problem is it’s not our trailer. It’s kind of a straight horror preview and while we’re sure it’ll appeal to many of you, we wanted to make sure you guys got to see our cut… Lets call it the “filmmaker’s cut”. We think it captures the comedy and scares of the horror films we grew up on – a kind of nostalgia for when horror films were fun. Can’t wait to show you the whole film… In the meantime, here’s the red band trailer we wanted our fans to see.”

The Jennifer’s Body trailer has pretty much all that was expected from the movie; blood, dark humor, strong language and raunchiness – all involving good-looking 20-somethings masquerading as teens. I wasn’t sold on the movie before, not even when the set pictures (above) were released recently – but I must admit this trailer has me interested in the film now; it really reminds me of the hilarious and shocking teen horror-comedy Teeth that was released last year.

Since earning near unanimous praise for her quirky teen pregnancy tale, Juno, screenwriter Diablo Cody has been a hot commodity in Hollywood. So naturally, when Cody teamed with Megan Fox (who is coming hot off the heels of the immensely successful but critically panned Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen) for the teen-horror comedy Jennifer’s Body, people were quick to pay attention.

The film, which revolves around high school cheerleader Jennifer (Fox) becoming possessed by a demon and devouring the men at her school, sounds like the perfect mix of dark comedy, raunchiness, and gore. Now, thanks to the guys at Film School Rejects, we get a better look at Fox (as well as co-star Amanda Seyfried from Mean Girls and Mamma Mia) in all their gory glory.

1. The Hollywood outsider who always manages to get in David O. Russell – is readying a new romantic comedy entitled Aaron and Sarah.The plot of the John Hughesesque comedy is as follows:

“Story centers on a nerdy guy and a popular girl who meet as freshmen and, over four years of high school, four proms and one funeral, become friends and eventually fall in love.”

It sounds like typical Hollywood fare, but I think that there just might be a little bit of bite to it – after all this is from the man who directed Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees Spanking the Monkey as well as the forthcoming Nailed with Jessica Biel and Jake Gyllenhaal.”

I wonder who is crazy enough to work with the man that got into a shoving match with George Clooney?

2. Kyle Gallner fresh off the horror success of The Haunting in Connecticut is a dead man. The young actor has signed on to star in the reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Jackie Earle Haley will play the iconic Freddy Krueger in the fresh take/ rehash of the horror franchise.

Gallner must love horror as he also stars in the yet to be released Jennifer’s Body which was written by Diablo Cody and stars Megan Fox..

3. Mark Bomback is adapting The Umbrella Academy for Universal Pictures. The film will be based on the Dark Horse comic book created by My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way.

This is the plot:

“The Umbrella Academy is a group of disbanded superheroes who reunite after the death of their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, an alien disguised as a wealthy entrepreneur. Hargreeves collected the members of the group shortly after their birth and trained them to save the world, and after his death, they carry on his plan.”

I wonder if Rhianna will be on the soundtrack?

It never rains but it pours with Superhero movies.

4. Kent Alterman director of Semi-Pro will direct Treehouse Gang for Warner Bros.
According to The Hollywood Reporter:

“The project is based on Timothy Dowling’s spec, which centers on a group of six childhood friends who get together in their late twenties for a treasure hunt that echoes the hunts of their youth, in the process exploring longtime friendships and grudges.”

It’s pitched as a grown-up version of The Goonies, which is what The Goonies 2 was supposed to be – which was also set up at Warner Bros.

Anybody else think that they’re just re-using an old spec script for that film?

5. Maria Bello is in final negotiations to join Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Salma Hayek and Maya Rudolph in an untitled film which was written and will be produced by Sandler.

The film which will start shooting in May “revolves around high school friends who reunite 30 years later.”

Sandler chum Dennis Dugan will direct.

With Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen getting ready for release, the Diablo Cody penned Jennifer’s Body already in the can and Jonah Hex and Fathom on the way, it looks like Megan Fox is getting ready to take over cinema screens across the globe.

The actress has now signed on to star opposite Mickey Rourke in Passion Plays, a 1940’s set dramatic thriller. The Transformers star’s character is described as “a slender beauty with wings who is part of a carnival.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

“Rourke will play a down-on-his-heels trumpet player, and Fox will play an angel in 1950s Los Angeles, with Rourke finding redemption in Fox after he attempts to save her from a gangster. Those familiar with the project describe it as a dramatic but heartwarming tale.”

Heartwarming and redemption? Period setting? Does anybody else think that this will get Mickey Rourke another Oscar nomination?

Passion Plays sounds like an interesting film with a period setting that can only add to the intriguing premise . Rourke does redemption with aplomb – one only has to watch The Wrestler and even Sin City to see this but will Fox be able to match the Iron Man 2 star’s intensity?

It’s doubtful – Fox is hardly known for her acting talent, but I’m sure her attachment wont harm the film getting funding or getting bums on seats for that matter.

Passion Plays will be directed by screenwriter Mitch Glazer.
