Bryan Singer's fairy tale flick, 'Jack the Giant Killer', has been pushed back from Summer 2012 to Spring 2013, affecting the release dates for both 'Rock of Ages' and 'Arthur & Lancelot'.

Yet another fairy tale-based project has vacated its 2012 release date, less than two weeks after Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters was pushed back to 2013. The latest fantastical adventure to abandon ship is the Bryan Singer-directed Jack the Giant Killer, which will now be released in spring of 2013, rather than Summer 2012.

The Warner Bros.-backed fantasy flick’s delay has partially affected two of the studio’s other upcoming films: the Jukebox musical, Rock of Ages, which has been bumped back slightly, to take Jack‘s previous spot – and the Medieval tale re-imagining, Arthur & Lancelot, a still-in-development project that has (unofficially) been shelved, for the time being.

Jack the Giant Killer was originally supposed to hit every kind of screen out there (re: 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D) on June 15th ...

Click to continue reading ‘Jack the Giant Killer’ Delayed Until Spring 2013

The year 2012 is a pivotal one – and not just because of that whole ‘world coming to an end’ business.

Sure, in one sense the movies of 2012 will be a smattering of the usual varieties, in the usual genres, encompassing the usual range of quality. However, within that spectrum of cinematic potential, there are some definite matters of interest amongst hardcore movie geeks that will be addressed or proven within the next calendar year.

We’d like to offer 5 questions we think movie geeks should be keeping in mind as they view their most anticipated films and watch the debates unfold – all while the box office profits get tallied, and the future of the movie biz is once again charted.

2011 had its share of disappointing movies, but among the good we had our favorites and it’s not dampening our spirits as we look forward to 2012 - where again, there are more major films releasing than there are weeks in the year.

From comic book, sci-fi and fantasy epics, to prequels, sequels and reboots, many of film’s iconic characters and actors make their way to the big screen again this year, and have earned their place among Screen Rant’s most anticipated movies of 2012.

Three titles due out in 2012 offer big-budgeted, action-driven re-interpretations (or spin-offs) of classic fairy tales: Paramount Pictures’ Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters, Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, and Warner Bros.’ Jack the Giant Killer – which reunites screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie and director Bryan Singer for a third time (following The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie).

An official teaser trailer has been released for Jack the Giant Killer; as is to be expected, the film looks to have re-imagined the relatively simple tale of a young farmer, some magic beans, and a dangerous giant, into a grand-scale, swords & steel fantasy epic.

Here is an official plot synopsis for the flick:

New Line/Warner Bros. has set release dates for the fairy tale retelling 'Jack the Giant Killer' and the Broadway musical adaptation 'Rock of Ages'.

Summer 2012 is already pretty jam-packed for the comic book crowd, what with The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Superman: Man of Steel and The Amazing Spider-Man already prepped to hit theaters. Now New Line/Warner Bros. have slated two more films – neither of which involves costumed vigilantes, sadly – for release during the season: Jack the Giant Killer and Rock of Ages.

The former is director Bryan Singer’s re-fashioning of the classic fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk”, while the latter is Hairspray filmmaker Adam Shankman’s cinematic adaptation of a hit Broadway musical.

Rock of Ages is now scheduled to arrive in theaters next summer on June 1st, where it will compete against Judd Apatow’s as-yet untitled Knocked Up spinoff.
Production has commenced on director Bryan Singer’s contribution to the ever-growing pile of upcoming Hollywood fairy tale “re-imaginings”, Jack the Giant Killer. This new take on Jack and the Beanstalk turns the story about a boy and his magic beans into a more epic yarn involving romance, conspiracy, multi-headed monsters, and the possibility of war between humankind and giants.

Ian McShane has now signed on for the film and will portray the regal King Brahmwell – a character bound to be kinder (and possess better hygiene) than McShane’s Blackbeard in this summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Actress Eleanor Tomlinson has signed on as the female lead in 'Jack the Giant Killer', director Bryan Singer's new version of the fairy tale 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.

Bryan Singer is joining the latest Hollywood craze with his own fairy tale “re-imagining,” Jack the Giant Killer. Like the trio of upcoming Snow White movies, as well as Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, the X-Men director’s new project refashions a classic bit of folklore (in this case “Jack and the Beanstalk”) as a more complex, action-heavy adventure tale.

Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) landed the titular role of Jack a few weeks ago, and now the film also has its female lead in the form of nineteen-year-old English actress, Eleanor Tomlinson.

That name probably doesn’t ring a bell, but Miss Tomlinson’s been in showbiz for several years now, having played the younger version of Jessica Biel’s character in The Illusionist and popped up as Fiona Chattaway in last year’s Alice in ...

Click to continue reading Eleanor Tomlinson To Romance ‘Jack the Giant Killer’

Despite having its share of development troubles – a director change, various screenplay rewrites, delays – pre-production for Jack the Giant Killer is officially underway. The film, a more “adult” take on the classic fairy tale, will be directed by Bryan Singer and written by frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie (The Wolverine).

Earlier this month, Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) was cast as Jack the peasant, the titular giant-killer, Bill Nighy and John Kassir were cast as the two-headed leader of the giants, and Stanley Tucci was cast as Roderick, the advisor to the king and the villain of the tale. Now, Ewan McGregor is in talks to join the film as well.

Fans of myths and fairytales will probably want to mark their movie going calendars for Jack the Giant Killer, director Bryan Singer’s forthcoming new take on the Jack and the Beanstalk tale.

After being given the official green light by the studio, the search was on to find a suitable actor play the titular Jack. Names such as Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) were mentioned as strong contenders. And while Jack has yet to be cast (Johnson still appears to be the frontrunner) we now know of two veteran actors who have joined the cast as a couple of very intriguing characters.

The last we reported on Bryan Singer’s next film, Jack the Giant Killer, the studio had given the project the official green light and the search was on for someone to star in the titular role of Jack.

After being rumored for the role of Cyclops in the Singer-produced X-Men: First Class, rising star Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) has been mentioned as the frontrunner for the lead role in Giant Killer. But now we’re hearing word that although Johnson might have caught the eye of Singer, the actor isn’t the only one in the running for the part.

Heat Vision is reporting that Johnson will test alongside Nicholas Hoult (Clash of the Titans) and the relatively unknown Aneurin Barnard (Ironclad) for the lead.
Bryan Singer had originally planned on getting Jack the Giant Killer before cameras this past summer, but concerns over the special effects and a script revamp prevented production from moving forward. Singer’s been biding his time with producer duties on X-Men: First Class, but now it looks like he’s all set for his trip up the beanstalk.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have officially given Jack the Giant Killer the green light and filming is expected to begin this spring.

The film is a darker version of the classic Jack & the Beanstalk fairytale that starts with a shaky truce between humans and giants being broken. The title character leads an expedition into the giants’ kingdom in the hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess.

Word just came down from Heat Vision that James McAvoy will play a young Charles Xavier in the Bryan Singer-produced X-Men: First Class, and now a few minutes later they bring another exclusive to the web: Bryan Singer’s next directorial project, Jack the Giant Killer, is putting filming on hold until February of 2011.

Production was supposed to get under way this summer, but has been delayed due to concerns about the visual effects. Singer has it in mind to pre-viz the entire film – a rare process, if I’m not mistaken – and plans on utilizing technology that allows him to view the CG giants in-camera while filming with the live-action actors.
Things are going according to plan for the future of the X-Men film universe… at least according to my thoughts on what we’d see from Fox Studios going forward. As expected, Bryan Singer is back in the fold and will be directing the prequel X-Men: First Class, and X-Men Origins: Magneto is seemingly even less likely to happen than before.

While some X-Men fans were hopeful of the second X-Men Origins film following the history of the master of magnetism, to me it was the least likely of the projects in development to happen. Not only would such a project require a re-cast of the title character, which would never please the full fanbase, but it would therefore be less bankable since the actors would be new to the franchise. Magneto was ...

Click to continue reading No Need For X-Men Origins: Magneto

The Hollywood Reporter has released the news that director Bryan Singer has been tapped to helm the upcoming film Jack the Giant Killer for New Line Cinema and Legendary Pictures. The film takes a more adult look at the classic childrens tales, “Jack and the Beanstalk” and its cousin “Jack The Giant Killer” (the latter was already made into a 1962 stop-motion film).

This news comes as a bit of surprise (though it’s not being reported that way, for some reason), as last word around the ‘Net was that Eagle Eye director D.J. Caruso would be directing the film. After a quick search and survey I haven’t turned up anything explaining why Caruso is off the project and Singer is on, but hey, it’s Hollyweird so who knows…

Caruso, director of such films as Disturbia and Eagle Eye, has been signed on to direct Jack the Giant Killer, a drama that takes a more adult look at the classic children’s story Jack and the Beanstalk.
