Kenneth Branagh Up to Direct Jack Ryan Series Reboot

Things were looking grim for Paramount’s reboot of the Jack Ryan series last week, when word got out that long-attached director Jack Bender (Lost, Alcatraz) had left the gestating project. When coupled with recent reports that suggest production will not begin until the film’s screenplay is reworked for a reduced budget, it was starting to sound like this particular franchise restarter might fall into development limbo.

However, the situation is looking less dire now that multiple Oscar-nominated actor/writer/filmmaker Kenneth Branagh (or, as you may know him, the director of Thor) is said to be working out a deal for him to hold the directorial reins on the currently-untitled Jack Ryan flick, which was previously known as Moscow.

Angelina Jolie Not Set For ‘Salt 2′; Jack Ryan Reboot Update

It’s been a while since we’ve had anything of substance to report on two impending action movie franchise titles: Salt 2, a sequel to the 2010 secret agent thriller starring Angelina Jolie, and Paramount’s reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise (which was originally titled Moscow).

“Caffeinated Clint” over at Moviehole has the latest word on both these projects – and that word is that both have hit a roadblock on their trips down the production pipeline. While there’s a different explanation for why each film has hit a snag, the pair are going to have to undergo some significant script rewriting (in order to move forward from here).

David Koepp Recruited For Jack Ryan Reboot Rewrite

It seems like one of the unofficial rules in Hollywood over the past two decades has been “When in doubt, hire David Koepp.” The screenwriter has simply worked on too many franchise to recount in full here – including the Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, and Indiana Jones series, among others. Recently he was hired on to rework the script for Men in Black 3 – and now the Jack Ryan reboot as well.

Oscar-winner Steve Zaillian was previously brought on-board to rewrite the project – which is reportedly no longer being referred to as Moscow – but ended up passing on the job. Jack Ryan Reboot Stalled; ‘Star Trek 2′ Moving Forward

Chris Pine is already the new flavor of James Tiberius Kirk in the Star Trek universe, and remains set to become the next incarnation of CIA analyst Jack Ryan in a reboot movie tentatively titled Moscow. The latter might not happen for a while now, since Paramount has understandably decided that Star Trek 2 is more of a priority for the time being.

Continuing issues with the Moscow script have encouraged studio officials to scrap their plans of releasing the reboot next year. They will instead focus on getting the next voyage of the USS Enterprise underway in time to make its scheduled Summer 2012 release date.

‘Dragon Tattoo’ Screenwriter May Revise Jack Ryan ‘Moscow’ Script

If screenwriter Steve Zaillian is good enough for Steven Spielberg and David Fincher, he’s good enough for director Jack Bender – or so goes the logic for Paramount executives, with respect to the upcoming Jack Ryan franchise semi-reboot, Moscow.

Zaillian is negotiating to join the project and rewrite the Moscow script that was originally drafted by Hossein Amini – before Adam Cozen essentially restructured it as a more commercially friendly version of his blacklisted screenplay, Dubai.

Chris Pine’s first outing as Jack Ryan in his pre-intelligence agency days was originally scheduled to begin filming in Budapest this March, but has been delayed – presumably due to script issues that Zaillian is being recruited to resolve. Lorenzo di Bonaventura Talks ‘Moscow’; ‘Salt’ & ‘Red’ Sequels

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has been making quite the name for himself over the past couple of years. In addition to his involvement with the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises, Bonaventura worked behind-the-scenes on this summer’s Angelina Jolie action vehicle, Salt, and next week’s comic book release, Red – not to mention he has the upcoming Jack Ryan franchise reboot, Moscow, on his plate as well.

Bonaventura spoke recently with Cinema Blend about Moscow, a prequel to Jack Ryan’s previous cinematic ventures that explores the character’s origins and will feature Chris Pine in the lead role. Lost director Jack Bender is attached to direct the flick, the script for which is currently being tweaked by Sherlock Holmes screenwriter Anthony Peckham.

Rumor Patrol: Possible ‘Moscow’ Directors

Paramount is actively searching for a director to helm their new Chris Pine as Jack Ryan film, Moscow and are reportedly considering fellows like Sam Raimi, Gore Verbinski, Timur Bekmambetov, and Kevin Macdonald for the job.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers 3) announced last week that he expects the new Jack Ryan feature to begin shooting in early 2011, most likely before Pine reprises his turn as the new Captain Kirk in Star Trek 2.

All four of the rumored choices to direct Moscow are attached or connected to other projects at the time being, so the actual production start date will be a key element that determines whether or not any of them are viable options.

New information on Paramount’s upcoming Jack Ryan film, which will star Star Trek‘s Chris Pine, has emerged concerning both the plot and potential title of the new installment in the franchise based off the novels of writer Tom Clancy.

It seems that this new Jack Ryan adventure (which producer Mace Neufield describes as neither a reboot nor an origin story), will pick up with the man in his pre-CIA days, back when he was working on Wall Street as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch in Baltimore.

Chris Pine In Negotiations To Be The Next Jack Ryan

Chris Pine, one of the next big things in Hollywood has been one of those actors among that special group seemingly considered for every big role out there (some other members being Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and Sam Worthington). Aside from being talked about for Green Lantern and a part in The A-Team, Pine is now being reported as a lead candidate to take over the character of Jack Ryan in the long-awaited return of the Tom Clancy franchise.

According to Variety, Paramount Pictures is in negotiations with the young Captain Kirk to play the CIA analyst for the next feature film based on the Tom Clancy novels.

George Clooney Doesn’t Know Jack – Ryan That Is!

A new Jack Ryan film has been kicking about the Paramount studio lot since the release of 2002′s The Sum of All Fears. Numerous names have been mentioned in conjunction with the Tom Clancy-created character, who has previously been portrayed on screen by Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck.

The last person who was in the frame for the next Ryan flick was George Clooney, but the producer of the forthcoming film, Lorenzeo Di Bonaventura says that the film isn’t suited to a man of Clooney’s age.

When speaking to MTV, the producer of Transformers and G.I. Joe gave an update on the project that rules out Clooney’s involvement.

Baz Luhrmann gets Gatsby; Brian Helgeland adds Salt; Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise believe that four times is a charm and Parmount Pictures finally get to know Jack!

Box Office

It was the battle of the A-Listers at the box office and against all odds Jim Carrey captured the top spot with Yes Man. A weekend take of $19 million should ensue. Will Smith had to vacate his usual number one position and settle for the runner-up place with Seven Pounds. The drama should make around $15 million this weekend. The Day The Earth Stood Still crashed and burned this weekend dropping a mighty 75% and grossing just $10 million. It looks like the Keanu Reeves film will have to make its coin back on DVD. 1. One time “Jack Ryan” and former tabloid fodder Ben Affleck is getting behind the camera once more following the stellar Gone Baby Gone.

Affleck will helm Arizona, the film details the death of an investigative reporter who died whilst covering the mob.

I’m damn happy that Affleck is regaining some of “the cred” that he lost during the JLO years. I think that he’s one of the last great leading men (in the traditional sense) and a growing filmmaker!

Rumor of the week. Nope, nothing to do with Bruce Willis or his family.

Word on the street (well, CHUD) is that Sam Raimi would like his Spider-Man star James Franco to play Jack Ryan in the film that he is shepherding through the stormy waters of production.

What’s that I heard you scream at your monitor? That’s a terrible idea! I agree with you.
