'Thor' director Kenneth Branagh is being brought aboard to helm the Jack Ryan franchise reboot, with Chris Pine starring as the famous Tom Clancy character.

Things were looking grim for Paramount’s reboot of the Jack Ryan series last week, when word got out that long-attached director Jack Bender (Lost, Alcatraz) had left the gestating project. When coupled with recent reports that suggest production will not begin until the film’s screenplay is reworked for a reduced budget, it was starting to sound like this particular franchise restarter might fall into development limbo.

However, the situation is looking less dire now that multiple Oscar-nominated actor/writer/filmmaker Kenneth Branagh (or, as you may know him, the director of Thor) is said to be working out a deal for him to hold the directorial reins on the currently-untitled Jack Ryan flick, which was previously known as Moscow.

Variety, which also broke the story about Bender leaving the new Jack Ryan movie ...

Click to continue reading Kenneth Branagh Up to Direct Jack Ryan Series Reboot

It’s been a while since we’ve had anything of substance to report on two impending action movie franchise titles: Salt 2, a sequel to the 2010 secret agent thriller starring Angelina Jolie, and Paramount’s reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise (which was originally titled Moscow).

“Caffeinated Clint” over at Moviehole has the latest word on both these projects – and that word is that both have hit a roadblock on their trips down the production pipeline. While there’s a different explanation for why each film has hit a snag, the pair are going to have to undergo some significant script rewriting (in order to move forward from here).

With regards to the currently-directorless Salt 2: Jolie has reportedly decided to not yet sign up for the project, citing issues with the current ...

Click to continue reading Angelina Jolie Not Set For ‘Salt 2′; Jack Ryan Reboot Update

Screenwriter David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man) will rework the script for Paramount's Jack Ryan reboot, with Chris Pine still attached to play the Tom Clancy character.

It seems like one of the unofficial rules in Hollywood over the past two decades has been “When in doubt, hire David Koepp.” The screenwriter has simply worked on too many franchise to recount in full here – including the Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, and Indiana Jones series, among others. Recently he was hired on to rework the script for Men in Black 3 – and now the Jack Ryan reboot as well.

Oscar-winner Steve Zaillian was previously brought on-board to rewrite the project – which is reportedly no longer being referred to as Moscow – but ended up passing on the job. Now Koepp has extra time to work on the screenplay, since the film won’t begin production until star Chris Pine completes ...

Click to continue reading David Koepp Recruited For Jack Ryan Reboot Rewrite

Paramount has indefinitely delayed its Jack Ryan franchise reboot, freeing up Chris Pine for 'Star Trek 2', which is tentatively expected to begin production this fall.

Chris Pine is already the new flavor of James Tiberius Kirk in the Star Trek universe, and remains set to become the next incarnation of CIA analyst Jack Ryan in a reboot movie tentatively titled Moscow. The latter might not happen for a while now, since Paramount has understandably decided that Star Trek 2 is more of a priority for the time being.

Continuing issues with the Moscow script have encouraged studio officials to scrap their plans of releasing the reboot next year. They will instead focus on getting the next voyage of the USS Enterprise underway in time to make its scheduled Summer 2012 release date.

Oscar-winner Steve Zaillian was recruited to rework the Moscow screenplay almost two months ago, but Deadline says he withdrew from the project sometime ...

Click to continue reading Jack Ryan Reboot Stalled; ‘Star Trek 2′ Moving Forward

Paramount's new Jack Ryan movie, 'Moscow' may be rewritten by Oscar-winner Steve Zaillian, who penned the script for David Fincher's 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo'.

If screenwriter Steve Zaillian is good enough for Steven Spielberg and David Fincher, he’s good enough for director Jack Bender – or so goes the logic for Paramount executives, with respect to the upcoming Jack Ryan franchise semi-reboot, Moscow.

Zaillian is negotiating to join the project and rewrite the Moscow script that was originally drafted by Hossein Amini – before Adam Cozen essentially restructured it as a more commercially friendly version of his blacklisted screenplay, Dubai.

Chris Pine’s first outing as Jack Ryan in his pre-intelligence agency days was originally scheduled to begin filming in Budapest this March, but has been delayed – presumably due to script issues that Zaillian is being recruited to resolve. Heat Vision says that the hold-up could potentially affect Pine’s availability for J.J.
Bonaventura spoke recently with Cinema Blend about Moscow, a prequel to Jack Ryan’s previous cinematic ventures that explores the character’s origins and will feature Chris Pine in the lead role. Lost director Jack Bender is attached to direct the flick, the script for which is currently being tweaked by Sherlock Holmes screenwriter Anthony Peckham.

Paramount is actively searching for a director to helm their new Chris Pine as Jack Ryan film, Moscow and are reportedly considering fellows like Sam Raimi, Gore Verbinski, Timur Bekmambetov, and Kevin Macdonald for the job.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers 3) announced last week that he expects the new Jack Ryan feature to begin shooting in early 2011, most likely before Pine reprises his turn as the new Captain Kirk in Star Trek 2.

All four of the rumored choices to direct Moscow are attached or connected to other projects at the time being, so the actual production start date will be a key element that determines whether or not any of them are viable options.

New information on Paramount’s upcoming Jack Ryan film, which will star Star Trek‘s Chris Pine, has emerged concerning both the plot and potential title of the new installment in the franchise based off the novels of writer Tom Clancy.

It seems that this new Jack Ryan adventure (which producer Mace Neufield describes as neither a reboot nor an origin story), will pick up with the man in his pre-CIA days, back when he was working on Wall Street as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch in Baltimore.

Events are set in motion, however, when Ryan leaves the U.S. and travels to Moscow to work for a mysterious billionaire employer who eventually frames Ryan as the mastermind behind a terrorist plot to ruin the U.S. economy (yeah, I know, ...

Click to continue reading New Details About Chris Pine’s Jack Ryan Film, ‘Moscow’

Chris Pine, one of the next big things in Hollywood has been one of those actors among that special group seemingly considered for every big role out there (some other members being Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and Sam Worthington). Aside from being talked about for Green Lantern and a part in The A-Team, Pine is now being reported as a lead candidate to take over the character of Jack Ryan in the long-awaited return of the Tom Clancy franchise.

According to Variety, Paramount Pictures is in negotiations with the young Captain Kirk to play the CIA analyst for the next feature film based on the Tom Clancy novels.

If this comes to pass, Pine will likely have a long and bountiful relationship with Paramount as both Jack Ryan’s adventures and the rebirth of the <a ...

Click to continue reading Chris Pine In Negotiations To Be The Next Jack Ryan

A new Jack Ryan film has been kicking about the Paramount studio lot since the release of 2002′s The Sum of All Fears. Numerous names have been mentioned in conjunction with the Tom Clancy-created character, who has previously been portrayed on screen by Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck.

The last person who was in the frame for the next Ryan flick was George Clooney, but the producer of the forthcoming film, Lorenzeo Di Bonaventura says that the film isn’t suited to a man of Clooney’s age.

When speaking to MTV, the producer of Transformers and G.I. Joe gave an update on the project that rules out Clooney’s involvement.

Di Bonaventura said:

“We submitted a script to Paramount recently. It was well-received and it’s in the process. It’s for a young Jack Ryan. I love George, but ...

Click to continue reading George Clooney Doesn’t Know Jack – Ryan That Is!

Harry Potter waves his wand and poof, grabs the No. 1 spot at the box office; Pierce Brosnan is The Hunter; get ready for Bridget Jones 3; Would-be Thor joins Lois Lane and Cyclops in Straw Dogs; Find out who Clifton Collins Jr is, and Sam Raimi talks Jack Ryan!

BOX OFFICE

Harry Potter cast another spell over the box office this weekend. The boy wizard should conjure up an impressive $160 million since his debut last Wednesday. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince looks to be another impressive money-spinner for Warner Bros., who delayed the film from its original November 2008 release after The Dark Knight hit big last summer. What’s more impressive is the popularity and quality of this franchise. Few film series make it to number six without losing box office or creative standards, but the ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: July 18, 2009

It’s Sunday and therefore it’s Weekend Movie News Wrap Up time.

This week:

Baz Luhrmann gets Gatsby; Brian Helgeland adds Salt; Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise believe that four times is a charm and Parmount Pictures finally get to know Jack!

Box Office

It was the battle of the A-Listers at the box office and against all odds Jim Carrey captured the top spot with Yes Man. A weekend take of $19 million should ensue. Will Smith had to vacate his usual number one position and settle for the runner-up place with Seven Pounds. The drama should make around $15 million this weekend. The Day The Earth Stood Still crashed and burned this weekend dropping a mighty 75% and grossing just $10 million. It looks like the Keanu Reeves film will have to make its coin back on DVD. Not good. You hear that Fox?

This week:

Affleck goes to Arizona, Warner Bros, figure out Beetle The Bard; The Wolfman howls at a different time; Keanu Reeves has 47 Ronin and own a piece of Hollywood – cheap!

1. One time “Jack Ryan” and former tabloid fodder Ben Affleck is getting behind the camera once more following the stellar Gone Baby Gone.

Affleck will helm Arizona, the film details the death of an investigative reporter who died whilst covering the mob.

I’m damn happy that Affleck is regaining some of “the cred” that he lost during the JLO years. I think that he’s one of the last great leading men (in the traditional sense) and a growing filmmaker!

This week:

Rob Reiner reads the Book of Shadows; 13 isn’t unlucky for Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham; we take a peek at Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino; will you see Saw V and Spider-Man makes sure that Sam Raimi doesn’t know Jack.

1. Rob Reiner will direct the action-adventure film Book of Shadows.

Nope, nothing to do with Bruce Willis or his family.

Word on the street (well, CHUD) is that Sam Raimi would like his Spider-Man star James Franco to play Jack Ryan in the film that he is shepherding through the stormy waters of production.

What’s that I heard you scream at your monitor? That’s a terrible idea! I agree with you.

So does Paramount Pictures. Allegedly.

Paramount wants to reboot the series (based on the novels by Tom Clancy) with a younger actor playing the CIA analyst in the spy thriller franchise. Hold on, didn’t they already do that with Ben Affleck back in 2002? Yes they did. However, they want to do it again. Their first choice was Ryan Gosling (rumor, again had it), but now Raimi would like to work with Franco once ...

Click to continue reading Does James Franco Know Jack (Ryan)?
