Chris Pine In Negotiations To Be The Next Jack Ryan

Chris Pine, one of the next big things in Hollywood has been one of those actors among that special group seemingly considered for every big role out there (some other members being Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and Sam Worthington). Aside from being talked about for Green Lantern and a part in The A-Team, Pine is now being reported as a lead candidate to take over the character of Jack Ryan in the long-awaited return of the Tom Clancy franchise.

According to Variety, Paramount Pictures is in negotiations with the young Captain Kirk to play the CIA analyst for the next feature film based on the Tom Clancy novels.

If this comes to pass, Pine will likely have a long and bountiful relationship with Paramount as both Jack Ryan’s adventures and the rebirth of the Star Trek franchise have the potential for long and successful lives.

As fans of the series know, Ryan has been played in previous films by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. Previously rumored candidates sought to play the character next include Canadian actor Ryan Gosling, Mr. Handsome George Clooney and James Franco.

Believe it or not, it’s been seven years since the last outing of Jack Ryan with 2002’s The Sum of All Fears and it’ll be nice to see the franchise back on the silver screens.

The film is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld and will be based on a script with the latest draft currently being worked by Hossein Amini from an original concept.

George Clooney Doesn’t Know Jack – Ryan That Is!

A new Jack Ryan film has been kicking about the Paramount studio lot since the release of 2002’s The Sum of All Fears. Numerous names have been mentioned in conjunction with the Tom Clancy-created character, who has previously been portrayed on screen by Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck.

The last person who was in the frame for the next Ryan flick was George Clooney, but the producer of the forthcoming film, Lorenzeo Di Bonaventura says that the film isn’t suited to a man of Clooney’s age.

When speaking to MTV, the producer of Transformers and G.I. Joe gave an update on the project that rules out Clooney’s involvement.

Di Bonaventura said:

“We submitted a script to Paramount recently. It was well-received and it’s in the process. It’s for a young Jack Ryan. I love George, but it’s not written for a man of his age. It’s written for a guy in his early 30s.”

Now, this news isn’t a huge surprise because Paramount have been looking to reboot the political action thriller series with a younger actor for sometime. However, there was a possibility that Clooney’s interest in the project might sway the studio to tailor the film to suit the actor. The Ryan films have always been more successful at the domestic box office, though Clooney’s international appeal may have helped open the film up to new revenue streams abroad.

It’s interesting that the studio still wants to go with a lead in his “early thirties” as there are few actors in that age bracket who can open a film like this. I thought that Clooney was a great choice – he was very good as a Jack Ryan-esque character in 1997’s The Peacemaker and although he’s now in his late forties, he’d still be good in the role.

I can only imagine that Di Bonaventura might knock on the door of his G.I. Joe hero Channing Tatum or that Paramount might approach their Star Trek star Chris Pine.

It’ll be interesting to see who finally steps into Ryan’s shoes, but they shouldn’t get too comfortable as the character has so far been played by three actors in only four films.

BOX OFFICE

Harry Potter cast another spell over the box office this weekend. The boy wizard should conjure up an impressive $160 million since his debut last Wednesday. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince looks to be another impressive money-spinner for Warner Bros., who delayed the film from its original November 2008 release after The Dark Knight hit big last summer. What’s more impressive is the popularity and quality of this franchise. Few film series make it to number six without losing box office or creative standards, but the Harry Potter films are keeping audiences happy. And with only two more on the way, it looks like fans will miss Harry and Co. once the spell book is closed in 2011.

Ice Age 3-D: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs froze the number two spot with a weekend take of around $17 million. With $152 million in the bank, this appears to be another franchise that’s keeping the customer satisfied.

Transformers 2 was three with another $13.5 million. The Michael Bay action film has now grossed $363 million.

Bruno died on its second weekend. The Sacha Baron Cohen comedy plummted a massive 80% with a weekend take of only $8 million. With just under $50 in the bank, it looks like the film will be profitable enough in theaters but will have to wait for DVD to really earn. To put things into perspective, The Hangover and The Proposal both took about the same as Bruno this weekend – and they’ve been out seven and five weeks respectively.

Johnny Depp’s Public Enemies grossed $7.5 million, with $79 million in loot so far, it’ll be a nail-biting final stretch to $100 million.

Pixar’s UP moved down the chart but still banked just over $3 million for a $279 million total, while My Sister’s Keeper and I love You Beth Cooper rounded out the top ten. Sister’s Keeper, The Cameron Diaz tear-jearker, has made a so so $41 million, while Heroes star Hayden Panettiere’s Beth Cooper stands at $10 million. Somebody with profit participation is hoping right now they hit big on DVD.

Movie News

1. Former James Bond Pierce Brosnan continues to carve out an interesting career after signing on to The Hunter. The comedy-drama will be directed by actor Stanley Tucci, who also wrote the script.

“The Hunter, set amid the aristocracy of New York’s Upper Westchester County, is a coming-of-age story of a middle-aged man, played by Brosnan, who find himself desperately clinging to the vestiges of his once-charmed life and world.”

Julianne Moore and Patricia Clarkson will costar in the film, which Brosnan will also produce.

The Irish actor has a raft of movies on the way including The Greatest, The Ghost, Percy Jackson and Remember Me with Twilight’s Robert Pattinson.

2. While not the usual Screen Rant story, we don’t want to disappoint any fans of romantic comedies, so with open hands and heavy hearts we bring you news that a third Bridget Jones film is in development. Renee Zellweger is believed to be returning to her heaviest role yet.

The film would be based on creator Helen Fielding’s newspaper columns, which tracks Bridget in her 40’s trying to conceive.

For those worried about this new installment in the Jones franchise, you have only yourselves to blame. You should have went to see Zellwegger’s New In Town! (Do you even know what that is?)

3. Former Thor contender Alexander Skarsgard will join Lois Lane and Cyclops… er I mean, Kate Bosworth and James Marsden in Rod Lurie’s redo of Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs.

According to Variety:

“Marsden plays a Hollywood screenwriter who relocates with his wife to her hometown in Mississippi. Bosworth plays the wife, who left the South for LA. to become an actress and returns home so her husband can finish his script in quiet. Skarsgard plays her high school boyfriend, an ex-football hero who sees the return of his former girlfriend as a way to reclaim glory.”

Dustin Hoffman and Susan George starred in the controversial original.

4. If you don’t know the name Clifton Collins Jr, then you’ll surely know the face. The actor has starred in Star Trek, Crank: High Voltage and Capote. With Boondock Saints 2, Paul Scheuring’s The Experiment and Mike Judge’s Extract on the way it looks like you’ll finally be able to put a name to the face.

5. Last year the internet went crazy when it was reported that Sam Raimi was interested in directing a Jack Ryan film. The Spider-Man director went on to direct… Spider-Man 4 but the Tom Clancy character remained on Hollywood’s radar.
News recently surfaced that George Clooney was interested in following Alec Baldwin’s, Harrison Ford’s and Ben Affleck’s shoes (which I presume are different sizes – shoes that is).

Raimi spoke to Moviehole about his interest in the character:

“I was chasing ([t] because I love that character so much. I really wanted to treat him seriously and deliver a grade-A Tom Clancy thriller. But then they wanted to make Spider-Man 4, so I couldn’t make it. But I love those movies, I still have [them] on video-tape actually. I loved Baldwin and Harrison Ford. Those films are so consistently well-made – I liked them better than some of the James Bond movies”

Raimi went on to say that he’s currently working with the writer of Spider-Man 4 in order to get the film before cameras in February.

It’s Sunday and therefore it’s Weekend Movie News Wrap Up time.

This week:

Baz Luhrmann gets Gatsby; Brian Helgeland adds Salt; Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise believe that four times is a charm and Parmount Pictures finally get to know Jack!

Box Office

It was the battle of the A-Listers at the box office and against all odds Jim Carrey captured the top spot with Yes Man. A weekend take of $19 million should ensue. Will Smith had to vacate his usual number one position and settle for the runner-up place with Seven Pounds. The drama should make around $15 million this weekend. The Day The Earth Stood Still crashed and burned this weekend dropping a mighty 75% and grossing just $10 million. It looks like the Keanu Reeves film will have to make its coin back on DVD. Not good. You hear that Fox?

Four Christmases grossed another $8 million helping the “comedy” cross the magic $100 million mark. Ho Ho Ho! Gran Torino grossed $115,000 from 19 locations and the Mickey Rourke drama The Wrestler might make $200, 000 only four theatres. What a body slam!

Movie News

1. The Great Gatsby will return to the big screen under the direction of Australia helmer Baz Luhrmann. The film, which is based on the legendary novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, tells the tale of Gatsby, a lonely millionaire and his long lost love Daisy Buchanan.

The book is a masterpiece and I’m quite fond of the 1970’s Robert Redford film, so I’m pretty interested to see how this turns out.

2. Oscar winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland has been hired to polish Kurt Wimmer’s script for the Angelina Jolie action film Salt (formerly Edwin A. Salt).

Phillip Noyce will direct the film which Sony hopes will become a major franchise for the studio.

3. Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise must have enjoyed working together on the forthcoming Valkyrie as the duo have three other projects on the boil. McQuarrie will co-write Flying Tigers which is:

” based on the volunteer fighter squadron formed to help the Chinese fight the Japanese before the U.S. entered World War II.”

According to Variety:

“McQuarrie also is writing and producing with Guillermo del Toro the previously announced United Artists project The Champions, penning the script with an eye toward hammering it into a Cruise vehicle. The British TV series transfer concerns a team of government agents rescued from a plane crash in the Himalayas by an advanced civilization and given superhuman abilities.”

McQuarrie is currently rewriting Jullian Fellows’ The Tourist, a spy thriller in which Cruise will star with Charlize Theron.

4. It looks like Paramount Pictures will soon have a script for their Jack Ryan reboot. Hossein Amini will write the script for the film which has no title, no star, no director and until now no story (that we know of). At he very least it should get some talent interested.

This week:

1. One time “Jack Ryan” and former tabloid fodder Ben Affleck is getting behind the camera once more following the stellar Gone Baby Gone.

Affleck will helm Arizona, the film details the death of an investigative reporter who died whilst covering the mob.

I’m damn happy that Affleck is regaining some of “the cred” that he lost during the JLO years. I think that he’s one of the last great leading men (in the traditional sense) and a growing filmmaker!

2. Love Harry Potter? Well I don’t, but if you do then you should be interested to know that Warner Bros. is very keen to figure out how the hell to turn J.K Rowling’s Beetle The Bard into a movie, or a series of movies.

The problem is that the studio has no idea how to develop these fairy tales into a feature (or features).

3. If, like me you are looking forward to The Wolfman then prepare to be disappointed. The horror remake has been moved again on he Universal release schedule. The Benicio Del Torro film will now open on November 6 rather than in April 2009.

Probably to get the Halloween audience. Besides – who would open a horror movie in the spring. It’s kinda like opening Halloween in August. Do you here that Dimension?!

4. The Day The Earth Fell Asleep …erm I mean Stood Still star Keanu Reeves has signed on to 47 Ronin. According to Variety the film is:

“an epic period film for Universal Pictures based on the true tale of a band of samurai swordsmen who avenged the death of their master in 18th century Japan.”

Wanted co-writer Chris Morgan is penning the script. I’m sure that there’s going to be enough Matrix homage/rip-off to make this worthwhile. Maybe.

This week:

1. Rob Reiner will direct the action-adventure film Book of Shadows.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

“The story follows a young man who must embark on the perilous journey of first love and face many trials of maturity while on the dangerous quest to close a mythical tome called “Book of Shadows” in order to restore balance to the world.”

Sounds like it could bring the director back to his Princess Bride heyday.

2. The poster for Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino is now online. When the film was first announced earlier in the year the internet went crazy over the idea that the film could be a new Dirty Harry film. While the film does not feature Harry Callaghan, Clint sure does look bad ass!

3. It’s almost Halloween and that can only mean one thing – there’s a new Saw movie on the way! Saw V (how odd for a film to use Roman numerals these days) opens Friday and you can check a batch of clips, interviews and trailers on Terror Feed.

4. Riding high on the crest of The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke has signed on to star with Jason Statham in 13. The film is a remake of the Franch language film 13 Tzameti.

According to Variety:

“(The film) centers on a man who steals a mysterious package that promises to pay out a fortune.”

50 Cent will co-star.

5. Sam Raimi does not know Jack – Ryan that is. How many times can I make that joke?

Raimi is too busy with Spider-Man 4 to helm the reboot of Tom Clancy’s all American hero.

There was news a few moths ago was that Raimi was miffed that his Spider-Man star (you know what I mean) James Franco was turned down by Paramount.

Raimi said:

“I’m really excited about Spider-Man… Production [on more Spider-Man films] would start probably by March, I’m guessing of 2010. I loveTom Clancy, and I hope they’d keep me in mind… But because I’m committed to ‘Spider-Man and making that picture, I think it’s going to knock me out of the running for the Jack Ryan picture.”

Here’s a crazy idea Paramount – let Ben Affleck star and direct the new Jack Ryan. You never know…

Does James Franco Know Jack (Ryan)?

Rumor of the week. Nope, nothing to do with Bruce Willis or his family.

Word on the street (well, CHUD) is that Sam Raimi would like his Spider-Man star James Franco to play Jack Ryan in the film that he is shepherding through the stormy waters of production.

What’s that I heard you scream at your monitor? That’s a terrible idea! I agree with you.

So does Paramount Pictures. Allegedly.

Paramount wants to reboot the series (based on the novels by Tom Clancy) with a younger actor playing the CIA analyst in the spy thriller franchise. Hold on, didn’t they already do that with Ben Affleck back in 2002? Yes they did. However, they want to do it again. Their first choice was Ryan Gosling (rumor, again had it), but now Raimi would like to work with Franco once more.

I guess three movies just wasn’t enough.

Although Franco is on Raimi’s wish list, Paramount doesn’t think that the Pineapple Express star is a big enough name. I guess a $23 million opening really doesn’t mean Jack anymore.

According to CHUD’s source, Raimi is willing to walk away from the project if he doesn’t get his way. If those are his creative decisions then that might not be such a bad idea. What the hell was wrong with Affleck anyway? The Bourne Identity (which came out the same summer as The Sum of All Fears) only grossed three million more – and they made another two films in that series.

I think what this story highlights (regardless of whether it’s true or not) is that there are NO young leading men out there. I don’t mean actors – I mean stars. I believe that we may have seen the end of the movie star.

I worry that all we are going to get from this point onwards is a series of flavors of the month stuck in movies. How many times in the past few years have we heard the phrases “the next big thing” or “the next (insert older actors name here)? What has become of these people? Not a great deal.
