‘Iron Man 3′ Begins Production; Secures Increased Budget

Even as the massive critical and financial success of The Avengers has us looking back at the history of Marvel’s shared movie universe, the studio has its gaze fixed firmly on the future – beginning with Iron Man 3.

Principal photography on the Iron Man threequel has reportedly gotten underway at the sound stages in Wilmington, North Carolina. As many reading this article are already well-aware: seasoned action filmmaker Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is calling the shots.

This announcement comes courtesy of Latino Review, which is also the same site responsible for breaking the news about the storyline for Iron Man 3 being heavily influenced by Warren Ellis’ “Extremis” comic book mini-series. That scoop has since been all but officially confirmed.

The Avengers came. The Avengers saw. The Avengers conquered.

Joss Whedon’s big screen comic book mash-up broke records at the box office over the weekend and managed to score the biggest opening weekend EVER! That’s right – bigger than Harry Potter ($169 million) and bigger than The Dark Knight ($158 million). The Marvel movie should gross a mammoth $200 million by Monday morning! A fantastic number given the films $220 million production budget.

The film grossed $80.5 million on Friday, (second only to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’s $91.1 million) kicking-off the summer season in spectacular fashion. Next month not only marks the beginning of an action-packed summer of superhero movies, led by Marvel’s The Avengers, but it also hosts the beginning of production on Iron Man 3.

With principal photography creeping up soon, new casting additions have to be completed even sooner and so two weeks ago came a casting call sheet revealing important information about returning characters joining Robert Downey Jr. We know Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson are all back from Iron Man 2, and they may just be joined by newcomer Ben Kingsley for the threequel.

‘Iron Man 3′ Casting Call Confirms Returning Characters

Recent rumors narrowed down a potential plot for Iron Man 3 drawing from the ‘Extremis’ storyline in Warren Ellis’ comic book arc, hinting at a key villainous character finally having a proper introduction. With Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) taking over directorial duties for the third installment, and co-writing the screenplay with Drew Pierce, we now at least have details confirming other key characters returning.

Even as the public’s eye remains firmly fixed on The Avengers, Marvel is preparing to begin production on Iron Man 3 this summer. Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is co-scripting and directing the latter project, which is supposedly being fashioned as a (primarily) standalone feature – more in the vein of a gritty, globe-trotting Tom Clancy thriller than its predecessors.

Latino Review is claiming to have an inside scoop on the storyline for the third Iron Man flick, which the site says could be borrowing elements from Warren Ellis’ famous “Extremis” comic book mini-series. One fringe benefit to having Iron Man featured in a Marvel movie (aside from the obvious advantage of having Robert Downey Jr.’s all-encompassing charisma) is that we get to see yet another new Iron Man armor design on the big screen!

Each new upgrade – from the suitcase-compact Mark V to the triangle chest piece Mark VI – has been better than the last, so fans are going to have high expectations for the Iron Man armor(s?) that will be featured in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.

Creative Differences Are Knocking Directors Out of Marvel Movies

Marvel Studios now has five movies under its belt, with a sixth coming next summer in The Avengers, two confirmed for 2013 and another pair of unannounced films scheduled for 2014. All of these movies exist in a shared universe, taking part in an ongoing continuity with an overarching storyline running congruently in the background.

While seeing movies follow the comic books in this respect makes The Avengers possible, this strategy does also have its downside as we saw most evidently in Iron Man 2. Each movie by Marvel Studios must follow certain guidelines and must include certain characters portrayed in a very specific way, thus restricting the creative freedom of the filmmakers and talent involved.

While the Iron Man films gave rebirth to the career and stardom of Robert Downey Jr. thanks to the oddly perfect casting of him as Tony Stark, they carried supporting casts of big-name talent, one of whom many don’t even realize is in the film.

Paul Bettany (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) played a part in Iron Man and Iron Man 2 as the voice of Jarvis, Tony Stark’s Artificially Intelligent computer who helped in the creation of Stark’s Iron Man armored suits. According to Bettany, he’ll again provide the voice of Jarvis in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers next year.

New ‘Avengers’ Banners; Marvel Confirms Alan Silvestri as Composer

Marvel superhero comic book movie fans will have to wait until February 2012 to get their next fix, in the form of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. However, the next big Marvel cinematic events is (of course) writer/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, which should be getting a full-length trailer sometime sooner, rather than later.

New ‘Avengers’ Images: Explosions, Gunfire, & Costumed Heroes

While we’re still waiting for Marvel to unveil an official teaser trailer for The Avengers – and not just a “button,” like the clip that showed at the conclusion of Captain America‘s end credits - the comic book/movie studio has been busy releasing lots of images, character profiles, and more to help heighten anticipation for the (hopefully) game-changing superhero ensemble adventure.

Now we have more still frames from the film, which offer an early look at several big-name characters in action – including S.H.I.E.L.D. head Nick Fury and the catsuit-clad Natalie Rushman/Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.

It’s expected that a full-blown teaser for The Avengers will be released in the near future, providing a better look at the super-powered protagonists of the film as well as the villains, which include the devious Loki and an army of malevolent extraterrestrial invaders.

‘Iron Man 3′ to Start Filming in North Carolina in June 2012

Iron Man will join the ranks of the superhero team The Avengers next summer, but the Old Shellhead isn’t giving up his role as a solo star just yet. According to new reports, just a month after The Avengers hits theaters, filming is set to begin on Iron Man 3.

The movie, which will be helmed by Shane Black, is reportedly scheduled to begin filming in June of next year in Wilmington, North Carolina. North Carolina beat out Michigan to attract the multimillion dollar production to several sound stages at Wilmington’s Screen Gems Studios.
