“When I was a child I spoke as a child I understood as a child I thought as a child; but when I became a man I put away childish things.” I Corinthians 13:11 – Paul

I would like to think that Paul, the author from the Bible who many think wrote the above quote, would have modified the end of that sentence to read, “…unless it’s a comic book movie toy, especially from Iron Man 2, because those are awesome!” Readers and followers of movie news find some of the most interesting things about upcoming films through their toys and other marketing aimed at children.

Remember how the blog world was set ablaze when the first images of Cobra Commander from G.I. Joe circulated because of the toy images that were released? Well the toys we have today aren’t as disappointing; in fact they are downright cool. Coming Soon has produced a couple pictures of Iron Man 2 action figures – an early Mark II design but more importantly the latest, greatest, Mark VI armor. Click on each picture for a larger view.

.

I like figures like this; my son will immensely enjoy terrifying my daughter’s Barbies with War Machine’s missile launcher. One thing that does strike me as odd, though, is the chest piece for Iron Man’s Mark VI armor. In a picture that Editor-in-Chief Vic Holtreman took this past summer at Comic Con, you get a good look at the Mark IV version of the armor (which we can only assume is the version Iron Man 2 opens with). Look at the pictures side-by-side below and tell me what you see different.

So I’m guessing that Ol’ Shellhead gets several new sets of armor by the end of Iron Man 2 and this latest toy reflects the final thinner, sleeker, design (the Mark VI). Of course, it could just be the toy makers and studios are releasing the Mark VI design just to sell more toys. For the first movie, there were a bunch of Iron Man armor types released in toy form that never made it to the screen. In all likelihood, though, the Mark VI will be what we get; can’t wait to see the enhancements they add to it.

What do you think of the new look of the Iron Man Mark VI armor? My wife sometimes tells me the only reason I had kids was to eat their snacks and play with their toys but what does she know? Whatever, I’m off to finish eating my fruit snacks and pudding cups while building with my Lincoln Logs and Erector Set.

Now, I know you’re thinking that because this video is from France that it’ll be in another language and you’ll just have to watch it and pretend to understand what they’re saying. No need to worry as the language in this video and how I like my salads have a lot in common: Not very much French.

Inside you’ll not only see interviews with director Jon Favreau and Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., but you’ll also get a little tour of Tony Stark’s updated workshop and take a glimpse of the filming of several scenes -- including being able to see an awesome green screen rig they have set up at the racetrack.

So what are you doing still reading? You should have skipped down below already and started watching the video. (I just don’t know about you guys with all this reading. Pshh Reading is so 90’s. Much like the Urkel Dance.)

I don’t know about you, but this film keeps looking better and better. Tony Stark has his own particle accelerator! (and I thought the only way to get one of those was to become a Ghostbuster. Remember: It’s not a toy)

I would have had this video posted earlier, but I kept watching it over and over. (and I had do the Urkel Dance)

Thoughts? Concerns? Baguettes? They’re all welcome.

If you're a long time Iron Man comic book fan, there MAY be reason for you to geek out even further over 'Iron Man 2.'

The most anticipated movie of 2010 is, without a doubt, Iron Man 2. Come May of next year, James Cameron’s Avatar will be a distant memory and the only thing fans boys and girls want to see is Iron Man(Robert Downey Jr), Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

Last night Entertainment Tonight aired a six minute segment that included new behind the scenes footage from the set of Iron Man 2 which included some spectacular crash scenes, a little more information on the Tony Stark/Pepper Potts/Natasha Romanoff love triangle and a never before scene of Whiplash cutting a car in half.

Of course there are very little-to-no finished special effects in the footage but that is to be expected. The meat of the footage and interviews were shot during the Indy car race in Monaco, where Whiplash is introduced to the story, and where director Jon Favreau used one of the biggest green screens I’ve ever seen (and which Screen Rant reported on this past July). During the interview Rob Downey Jr. said this about the action so far:

“We have been blowing things up, and I have been trying to avoid [Whiplash's] laser whips. Come on, it doesn’t get any better than this.”

Enough banter – watch the video then read further for a cool piece of speculation:

What do you think? Cool, right? My geek factor exploded when Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) throws his whip towards Happy Hogan’s (Favreau) limo and cuts the side of it off. According to RDJ, “the car gets cut in half and then in half again. This is where he meets his nemesis, and this big kind of action sequence unfolds on the track…“ (I’ll explain in a moment why I emphasized “unfolds”). It would appear that the action in Iron Man 2 is going to be better than in the previous film and that can only be a good thing. I think Jon favreau has quickly become the most trusted comic book director (sorry Brett Ratner) in Hollywood among fanboys worldwide. Says Favreau during the interview:

“Every day we come to the set we try to discover new ways to make the story interesting and unexpected.”

I don’t think there is anyone that doesn’t believe he is sincere with that comment. I’m still waiting for the Comic-Con footage to be released online, but until then we still have the campy re-enactment footage to get a sense of what happened.

And now for some exclusive speculation…

Did you happen to notice what Pepper Potts (Paltrow) throws out the car window towards Tony Stark during the Whiplash attack scene at 04:29 into the clip? Yes, it’s a fancy looking briefcase – big deal, you say? Well if you’re not a long time Ferrophile (the Iron Man equivalent of a Trekkie) you may not be aware that in the comic book, for many years the armor was collapsible – and Tony Stark carried it with him everywhere in a briefcase.

Now put the aforementioned scene in the context of the above information, and take a look at the enhanced image below. It sure looks a lot like a case that could contain the foldable armor Tony Stark uses from the older comics. Look at these photos and tell us what you think? It would explain how Tony is able to run Whiplash off in Monaco while his armor is back in Malibu.

The mysterious briefcase in a scene from the film

A classic panel from the comic book, and Tony carrying another mysterious case

If that is truly the case (pun intended) then my heart may have just stopped from the sheer power of geekiness! You heard it here first people!

Iron Man 2 stars Robert Downey Jr.(Tony Stark/Iron Man), Gwyneth Paltrow(Pepper Potts), Mickey Rourke(Whiplash), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodey/War Machine), Sam Rockwell (Justin Hammer), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury)and Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan).

What did you think of the new behind the scenes footage? Does it get you even more excited for the real thing in a few more months?

In a move the reeks of opportunism and greed, Jack Kirby’s Estate (a.k.a. his family) have hired Intellectual Property Lawyer Marc Toberoff to sue Disney/Marvel, Sony, Universal, 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures in an attempt to reclaim copyright ownership of the characters their late father Jacob Kurtzberg created. You may know his name better as Jack Kirby and you are most familiar with his iconic and highly popular comic book creations, The Fantastic Four, Captain America, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk and The Silver Surfer.

Thanks to the guys over /Film for sharing this with us and to Rich Johnston at Bleeding Cool and Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywod who seem to have gotten the drop on this breaking news. This is not the first lawsuit we’ve seen involving a comic book creator’s estate vs. the current owner and publisher; Just recently we reported and discussed WB/DC’s fight with the heirs of Jerry Siegel and Jerry Schuster over the rights to Superman.

The Siegel/Shuster heirs have been successful in their legal pursuit to some degree; they now have full access to Superman’s origins with many thanks going to their superstar lawyer (you guessed it) Marc Toberoff. What they are going to do with the just the origins of Superman remains a mystery to me, because after the countless retellings of Superman’s beginnings, I’m pretty sure we weren’t going to see that story again anytime soon.

Back to Jack Kirby: His Estate is currently suing and sending termination of copyrights notifications to each of the big studios that have involvement with any of characters Kirby created. The rest of this article is background information on Jack Kirby and my own observations and opinions. I am not a copyright lawyer, nor do I claim to have extensive background knowledge on U.S. Copyright Laws; so if you see something I misinterpreted, please enlighten me.

This isn’t the first time Kirby and Marvel haven’t seen eye to eye on things. In a very detailed account over at The Comic Journal, Marvel was in a major dispute with Kirby during much of the 80s, regarding his work from the 60s and 70s. At the end of the day (and after Will Eisner got involved), Marvel reluctantly agreed to give Kirby back 1900 pages of his work. That seems like a lot, but it’s actually less than 25% of what Kirby had done.

Kirby was the first illustrator hired when Jerry Iger and Will Eisner formed Eisner & Iger Studios in the 1930s. Until 1978, when the copyright laws were changed, most if not all of the comic creators hired artists under a “work-for-hire arrangement”. In other words: artists didn’t own the rights to whatever they were paid to draw. The same thing is still done today in other business models – electronics and programming are two of the biggest examples.

When a programmer working for Microsoft writes a new program and it turns into the major code behind a new piece of Microsoft software, that programmer doesn’t own the rights to his code. He was paid by Microsoft to write it and has already been fairly compensated for his time and effort. He doesn’t have the right to sue once that program starts making millions of dollars, just because he is jealous.

I don’t claim to know the copyright laws inside and out, but to me it would seem pretty simple: If Jack Kirby was hired under those aforementioned circumstances, then any characters he created should not be his to own. Sure, he will always get “creative credit” for coming up with them in the first place, but it’s not like he thought them up in his garage and then Marvel came along and stole them in the night. From what I understand, Kirby was paid fairly to create those Marvel characters and without the company publishing his work, he would not have gotten them off the ground. Of course the reverse could be (and likely will be) argued – that Kirby created the most iconic characters in Marvel’s repertoire and without him they would have died a slow comic death.

Hollywood has a lot of new digital 3D projects on deck, most notably James Cameron’s highly-anticipated film, Avatar. While films like Avatar are being shot in digital 3D from the start, older films are also entering the third dimension – case in point being Disney’s upcoming Toy Story/Toy Story 2 double feature, which will be showing in limited engagement this Fall.

Well, AICN is exclusively reporting that Iron Man 2 has landed somewhere in the middle ground of old/new 3D: a new movie shot with regular film that is being considered for 3D conversion before its release.

Oh, and did I mention that Iron Man 1 might be getting the 3D treatment as well?

So before we get into the details of Iron Man 2 possibly being converted to 3D, we need to rewind the clocks a bit, back to almost exactly a year ago, when we first reported that Iron Man 2 might be filmed in 3D/Imax. Our own Vic Holtreman (a serious Iron Man fanboy) was pretty psyched about the notion…which unfortunately didn’t pan out by the time IM2 started its principal shoot.

Reasons for Favreau foregoing the 3D/IMAX approach reportedly included the fact that his cinematographer, Matthew Libatique, prefers to shoot on film (modern 3D uses digital filming techniques) and the fact that the process would add too much expense to the budget. Rather than try an force the issue, Favreau opted to look ahead, planning for Iron Man 3 to get the 3D/IMAX treatment.

Jump back to the here and now, and AICN is reporting that Marvel and Paramount (and now Disney?) are going bananas over a one-minute demo clip of Iron Man 2 that has been converted into 3D. The clip was apparently so impressive that the studio has allegedly reached out to three different companies specializing in 3D conversion, to see if it isn’t worth their time and money to convert all of IM2 into a 3D format. AICN’s same source on this is also reporting that the studio is simultaneously mulling over whether or not to convert the original Iron Man into 3D as well, to serve as a 3D theatrical pre-release/promo for Iron Man 2 in 3D.

Personally, I think getting BOTH Iron Man films in 3D would be awesome, and I know that Vic would probably curse my name forever if I were to say anything less. But why would I? This WOULD be pretty awesome – especially if they offered moviegoers the one-two punch of heading back to the theater to enjoy Iron Man all over again, followed closely by the sublime experience of Iron Man 2 in 3D. I would happily shell-out (get it?) for that experience, and I’m pretty certain a lot of you would, too.

And if the returns are good (pretty bloody likely) and Iron Man 3 is shot from the get-go in 3D / IMAX, you Blu-ray fans would end up with an “Ultimate Collector’s Edition” Iron Man Trilogy that you could enjoy in HD 3D from start to finish. Imagine THAT movie marathon on a rainy weekend afternoon…

Wanna see Iron Man again in 3D?

As AICN also points out: if Marvel sees big returns from this venture, will we see forthcoming films like Captain America and Thor in 3D as well? Because seeing Cap jump from a plane over a hellish WWII battlefield or Thor raining down thunder in 3D would make for a pretty epic experience. Here’s hoping it all comes to pass.

What about you: would you like to see your Iron Man films get the 3D treatment?

Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7, 2010. We’ll keep you updated on when/if you can catch Iron Man re-released in digital 3D.

Matthew Vaughn, director and producer of the upcoming rated-R comic book adaptation, Kick-Ass, really wants to helm Marvel Studio’s The Avengers movie.

Vaughn, if you remember, was director of X-Men: The Last Stand… for a short while anyway. After he took over for Bryan Singer, he quickly left which opened to door for Brett Ratner to direct the project which in my mind, is the absolute worst of the four X-Men movies.

Looking forward instead of back though, Vaughn now has directed three feature films: Layer Cake, Stardust and now Kick-Ass (which quickly earned itself an American distributor after premiering footage at San Diego Comic-Con.) Now, he wants to do another superhero flick…

Vaughn was attached to direct the Thor solo movie before his contract expired and Branagh was hired to helm the project. The script he and partner Mark Protosevich had written was apparently loved by Marvel Studios but it demanded an insanely high budget that he needed to cut in half (apparently from $300 Million to $150 million).

As for Superman, the current rumor out there is that James McTeigue may direct with the Wachowski Bros. supporting as producers.

On that note, Vaughn also spoke about another Marvel project that he wanted to direct a few years back.

“I was desperate to do ‘Iron Man’ about 8 years ago, and everyone was like, ‘Iron Man, no one will go watch that,’… Cut to now, and it’s a huge hit.”

“I grew up watching superhero films, so I want to make superhero films,”

I admire his passion for the genre and I’m willing to give him control over one of the major Marvel feature films in development. At least that would give him his chance to finally direct the Thor character and hit on his dream of directing Iron Man.

Would you light Vaughn to direct the Superman reboot or The Avengers?

The Avengers is currently scheduled to open May 4, 2012.

“The mask is off… [Iron Man] is like, ‘It’s me,’ and now what does that really mean?”

In other Iron Man news, the French website, Fantasy.fr has a brand new photo of Sam Rockwell in Iron Man 2 as Tony Stark’s rival, Justin Hammer. It’s nothing special, but here it is:

Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2

In the footage we were treated to at the San Diego Comic-Con IM2 panel, Hammer works with Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes character to supply with him weapons for the War Machine suit.

As for the new villain of the franchise, Mickey Rourke, who’s playing Whiplash in Iron Man 2, spoke with reporters yesterday at the Sarajevo Film Festival and talked about how grateful he is for where is career and life is now, taking full blame for ruining it years earlier. He then touched on Iron Man 2 and talked about his age affecting him to the point where he’d not do a sequel to The Wrestler, a movie that he said was by far his most difficult due to the physicality of it.

“I’m not 20 years old any more and when they throw your ass down, something is gonna hurt… My back would go out, my knee would go out. I had three MRIs in the first two months. If they would say they want to make Part 2, I would say, ‘No, thank you.’”

And on Iron Man 2, he promises it will “be better than Iron Man 1, that I can guarantee you.”

If you missed it, take a look at what Rourke may look like in Whiplash armor and check out Scarlett Johansson talking about the future of her character, Black Widow.

With an amazing cast, a great director and the best studio for the job, I’m excited for this movie and I can’t wait till next summer for it.

What are you feelings on Iron Man 2 and its new cast members?

Jon Favreau loves to take chances when it comes to the Iron Man movies. First he cast a forty-something Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark (brilliant!) and now for Iron Man 2 he’s decided to highlight what even fans of the long-running comic book would call a cheesy, second-tier villain: Whiplash.

Basically Whiplash is an ex-con who figures out how to build a suit that uses electrically-charged whips as a weapon. And yes, at one point in the comics he did look like he was into bondage with a black leather costume replete with a zippered mouth.

But for Iron Man 2, Favreau has decided to change the character and make him Russian, combining Whiplash (who will be played by Mickey Rourke) with another armored villain known as the Crimson Dynamo. To help familiarize fans with this amalgam of a character, Marvel will be putting out a four part comic book miniseries that will introduce Ivan Vanko (Whiplash’s real name) and what leads up to his hatred and need for revenge against Tony Stark.

Iron Man vs. Whiplash will premiere in November of this year and will be written by Brannon Braga (long time Star Trek scribe and currently working on the hit Fox TV series 24) and Marc Guggenheim. Here’s the official description of the series:

Before he strikes in “Iron Man 2,” meet the all-new, all-different, all-deadly Whiplash in this special in-continuity adventure! Who is Anton Vanko and why does he blame Tony Stark for the murder of thousands? For that matter, why does the United Nations? Brannon Braga (TV’s “24″) and Marc Guggenheim (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and artist Phil Briones (SUB-MARINER: REVOLUTION) have the answers!

The cover of 'Iron Man vs Whiplash' #1

I know I’ll be picking up this series for a couple of reasons:

1. About the only comic books I buy are Iron Man related.

2. Much like the Star Trek prequel comic mini-series, I think this will add to my enjoyment of the movie.

And a shout out to intrepid Screen Rant writer Rob Keyes for bringing this to my attention 3 days ago – we could have scooped the other movie sites that have since picked this up if I hadn’t been so lazy.

Iron Man 2 opens on May 7, 2010.

As we detailed in our article about the Iron Man 2 footage, it opens with a Senate meeting led by a Senator (Gary Shandling) who requests that the Iron Man armor be turned over to the US government – Stark declines in a pure act of showmanship. Later in the footage, the Mark 2 armor (silver) appears to have been confiscated by the US military. Hammer then tells Rhodey and a soldier about how he can outfit the armor with weapons, which Rhodey wants. It’s pretty obvious that Rhodey/War Machine could be seen at odds with Iron Man/Tony Stark, as detailed by MTV Splash Page’s interview with Cheadle:

“We kept asking ourselves: How does that play out with Tony Stark being an independent contractor doing what he wants to do, and Rhodes actually being in the military, there’s a real chain of command he has to follow. What’s the conflict that creates?”

Sounds like a great dynamic between the two best friends. However, this Iron Man/War Machine battle seems to go against early speculation that Iron Man and War Machine would team up to fight Whiplash. In fact, many thought Hammer would upgrade Whiplash’s tech into the Crimson Dynamo armor by the end of the movie (this may happen of course, we’re speculating here).

But with the big reveal that Iron Man could in fact be facing War Machine as an adversary, we could see an epic battle between the two armored heroes that will probably blow the roof off movie theaters next May!

In the comics, Iron Man and War Machine have faced off several times, the first time was when Tony “died” in the comic and Rhodey took over as CEO of Stark Enterprises. When Rhodey found out that Tony was put on ice and “defrosted” after a cure to a cyber-virus that was ravaging his nervous system and had faked his death, Rhodey quit and his long-time friendship with Tony ended. They battled in a classic Len Kaminski/Tom Morgan tale when Rhodey needed the War Machine plans to fix the armor, and Tony wouldn’t let him have it. And don’t worry, but the end of the 1990s, Tony and Rhodey made amends. I recommend checking out Advanced Iron to learn more about these classic Iron Man stories!

Also, some photos of the Iron Man 2 toys were leaked online and a Crimson Dynamo figure showed up. But before everyone jumps to the conclusion that he’s in Iron Man 2, it’s been revealed that it’s part of an Iron Man comic book line. There is even a “Classic Armor” Iron Man figure, seen in the 1970s and part of the 1980s. This particular Dynamo armor was destroyed in the classic David Michelinie/Bob Layton Iron Man arc, Armor Wars, considered the best Iron Man story by many fans. But it recently re-appeared in issues of Invincible Iron Man: World’s Most Wanted.

So what do you all think? Are we in for the ultimate armored battle as Iron Man (potentially) faces off against War Machine? Two best friends duking it out in Los Angeles!

Iron Man 2 opens on May 7, 2010.

Not that it has a snowball's chance of happening, but Leterrier has a wicked cool idea for an "Avengers summer."

Louis Leterrier, the director behind last year’s The Incredible Hulk, made a lot of headlines in and around the time of its release by hinting at a Captain America cameo in the film as an “easter egg” that never really met our expectations. Now he’s at it again, this time talking about the major upcoming Marvel films, what he knows about them, what he’d like to work on, and what he’d like to do with The Avengers, given the chance.

In a Clash of the Titans set interview, LA Times journalist, Geoff Boucher, sat down with Letterier who wasn’t shy about revealing some of his ideas and thoughts on the upcoming slate of films in development at Marvel Studios. We’ve taken the best bits to discuss and share with you, and then we share what we think could be done with the eagerly anticipated Marvel team-up adventure.

Besides bringing the big Green man back to the silver screen, Leterrier also directed Transporter 2 and is currently working on the Clash of the Titans remake, which stars Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation, James Cameron’s Avatar). On set for the production of this movie, the cast and director conducted the usual interviews for the press where interview, Geoff Boucher extracted some great tidbits from the Paris-born director.

Only a part of the complete interview has been made available for the moment and luckily, it’s the segment that we’re most interested with: The superhero movie stuff! It begins with talk about the Hulk franchise where Leterrier was asked about his interest in working on the sequel to The Incredible Hulk that Marvel may be interested in developing in the future.

His answer was surprisingly “no.” He explained that he’s contracted to do another film with Marvel and says that when he’s done with Clash of the Titans, he’ll go to Marvel and say “Guys you need me? Is there something I can do?”

From Marvel’s perspective, I’d imagine they’d want him to do the sequel since he already started the rebooted franchise and did a solid job of it. From Leterrier’s perspective though, the movie was surrounded by controversy about Norton’s creative differences with the studio as well as challenges during production. And while it performed decently at the box-office, it wasn’t what some expected and it barely beat out Ang Lee’s version in terms of financial results.

“Hulk was such a challenge. It was to reboot something and follow [the Ang Lee-directed 2003 “Hulk”] movie that was absolutely adored by part of the fan population and then absolutely hated by another part. It was complicated for me. I wasn’t sure what to do with that history. I did my Hulk but it was not easy. If I do another Hulk film it will always be compared to the Ang Lee thing, and my first one … if I come back I’d love to do another superhero, something different that I can really put my touch on.”

So, if Leterrier does direct another Marvel flick, and if it’s not a Hulk sequel… then what could it be?

Of course, The Avengers is brought up next. And of course Leterrier says he’d love to do it.

Here’s where it gets interesting. After explaining some of the films he would and would not like to do (he would have liked to do Iron Man, Captain America and a different Fantastic Four movie but didn’t want to do Thor, even though he’s a fan of the latest Thor comics), he went on to talk about the Captain America movie and his ultimate dream project…

It comes from Sideshow Collectibles, who we’ve highlighted here before due to the awesome products they carry and the quality of what they choose to select for their site. The actual creator of this piece is a little company called Legacy Effects. Never heard of them? You might recognize them by their former name: Stan Winston Studios.

This half-scale maquette was used to develop the original screen-used costume. Sideshow collaborated with Legacy Effects to create this for collectors, capturing the awesome detail of Iron Man’s armor. Each piece is individually painted and finished, each with its own unique quality and detail that is the trademark of a handcrafted Sideshow Collectibles product.

This bad boy stands about 40 inches tall and is crafted from polystone, fiberglass, metal and other materials to best recreate the Iron Man armor as authentically as possible. It includes LED light-up eyes and heart to add realism. The Iron Man Mark III Half-Scale Maquette is an awesome Iron Man collectible, if you can afford it.

Well, flash-forward a year later and we finally have a first look at two out of the four Marvel/Madhouse films on the way. The first characters to receive their animakeover?
.

Anime is an art form that has a tendency to split people right down the middle: you either love it or hate it. Personally, I used to be an anime fanatic back in high school (over a decade ago, yikes!) but have found it increasingly difficult to appreciate the genre in my older years. Too much ’style over substance’ too often for my liking.

However, I find myself facing a split decision in regards to these trailers: I like the Iron Man one but don’t like the Wolverine one. At least the Iron Man movie still retains the feel of the Iron Man we know and love (if not slightly altered) – that Wolverine flick is something I would never recognize if I didn’t already know what it was.

But then, Marvel International President Simon Phillips stated last year that these new anime films would “create a parallel universe for Marvel.” That anime Wolverine definitley looks like he’s from another universe.

The four Marvel/Madhouse anime films will each be written by Warren Ellis, writer of renowned comic book series Transmetropolitan and The Authority.

Both the Iron Man and Wolverine animes are due out in 2010. We’ll have a look at the final two Marvel anime films whenever the trailers drop.

What do you think: Is anime a good look for the Marvel Universe?

Comic-Con seems like old news (even though it only ended a week ago), but as a final note we thought we’d show you what you guys ended up picking as the hottest things to come out of the 4 day event. There was certainly a lot of competition for fan attention, but as usual there are always a few things that end up grabbing the limelight.

We ran a poll asking you to pick what you thought were the three hottest things to come out of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Now the total numbers add up to more than 100% because with so much to choose from we allowed people to pick their top 3 items.

Results after the jump.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Once again (as happened two years ago) the winner by far is Iron Man, with 60% of voters selecting that as one of their top 3 events at the Con. Avatar came in second with a very respectable 38%, especially considering how little info there has been about the film up until footage was shown in San Diego.

From there we have the upcoming Sci-Fi film District 9 and the Johnny Depp-starring Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland pretty much tied for 3rd. Tron 2 (now known as Tron Legacy) was very close to those films with 18%.

I guess we don’t have as many Twilight fans here on the site as I thought, since New Moon only garnered a 15% rating.

One thing that caught me off guard at first, but in hindsight makes sense, is the fact that Kick-Ass scored near the bottom of the pack. Based on the reaction to the footage from those present, I would put that in the top 3 for sure, perhaps even above Avatar. As of Comic-Con Kick-Ass did not yet have a distribution deal, but based on the reaction there I would think this should not remain the case for long. I think if they really wanted to get the word out on the film they should release at least some of the footage online. Of course it would have to be age-restricted as it was definitely R-rated footage, but I think people would eat it up big time.

I’d have to say the same about Where the Wild Things Are: The audience was wildly enthusiastic about what they saw, but at least here on Screen Rant, that hasn’t translated to much excitement. Then again our readers do skew more towards the superhero/sci-fi side of things – however that doesn’t explain why the Tim Burton-produced 9 came out at the bottom of our pile… Other than there just so many heavy hitters it was up against in the voting.

Anyway, there you have it – as a group, that’s what you folks are most interested in seeing in the upcoming months!

Jon Favreau was also at Comic-Con, treating the 6,000-plus fans who were lucky enough to get into Hall H to the first ever footage from Iron Man 2. Screen Rant head honcho, Vic Holtreman, was one of those lucky folks and he (along with pretty much everyone else) has had nothing but amazing things to say about it.

However according to Favreau himself it could have been even better. He actually wanted to make the Iron Man sequel in 3D (he had hoped for this almost a year ago), and wants the third one done with the technology if possible. The director spoke to MTV about his liking for 3D and specifically praised James Cameron for what he’s doing with Avatar:

“I really love the 3D… I like all the new technologies, 3-D being one of them. James Cameron had brought me around a few months back to see what he was doing with ‘Avatar’; that’s what’s been seen now by many of the fans… It was exciting to go in there and see what he’s doing with cutting-edge technology. He’s just a great storyteller as well, and to see a great filmmaker working with the cutting-edge of this technology is amazing.”

Favreau went on to say that he loved the footage he saw of Avatar so much that he almost made Iron Man 2 in 3D, but cited certain problems like time and money constraints, as well as it meaning you have to shoot it digitally, as reasons why he didn’t:

“I talked to Marvel after I’d seen [Cameron's footage] about doing ‘Iron Man [2]‘ in 3-D… I was hoping to get a shot at doing it this time around, but it didn’t work out that way… There are a few drawbacks to it at this point – there’s more cost involved, and it also forces you to shoot digitally. My cinematographer [Matthew Libatique] really likes film, and ‘Iron Man’ had a certain look because it was film.”

But nonetheless Favreau remains optimistic about 3D being used for Iron Man 3:

“I think that, as the digital technology gets better, 3-D is going to be a lot easier… Certainly for ‘Iron Man,’ I think it would work out well.”

Favreau says that even though Iron Man 2 wasn’t shot with IMAX cameras, he’d like to see it “blown up” for IMAX nonetheless. The same thing was done for Star Trek this summer, and even The Dark Knight to some extent last summer (several scenes were shot with IMAX cameras).

Favreau goes on to remind us that he’s not signed on to direct Iron Man 3 nor The Avengers movie that Marvel has lined up for 2012 (which, in case you don’t know, will feature Iron Man along with Thor, Captain America, Hulk and Nick Fury). But he says he has talked to Marvel about the content of at least The Avengers, and he’ll be involved in at least some capacity. With the great job he did with Iron Man (and that looks to continue with Iron Man 2) I hope he stays on as director for Iron Man 3 as well as The Avengers.

With regards to 3D, I think having that red and gold suit on the biggest screen possible, as well as feeling like you can reach out and grab it, can only be a plus. I’m sure Favreau – with both his enthusiasm for 3D and him proving with the first Iron Man that he knows what he’s doing with the franchise – would utilize 3D in the right way.

What about you: Do you think the 3D and IMAX routes would be a good way to go for the Iron Man franchise? Or is it fine the way it is in 2D and on the standard screen?

Iron Man 2 is scheduled to be released on May 7th, 2010.

Marvel Studios had a big presence at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday by providing fans with one of the most entertaining panels of the event. That presentation was of course, for Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2, which he delivered to the loyal Hall H residents in full force.

Screen Rant master Vic and I attended the Iron Man 2 panel and were treated to something amazing. But we’ve already talked about that and while you wait for the trailer we saw to eventually come online, you may be wondering what updates there have been for the other more distant films in Marvel’s production queue.

Participating in the interviews were key cast members Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle and Scarlett Johansson, as well as director Jon Favreau and Marvel President of Production, Kevin Feige.

Feige had the most interesting things to say about the Iron Man sequel and the Avengers movie.

According to Feige, Iron Man 2 is not about cramming in too many characters, the cardinal sin of a sequel. He emphasizes that it’s totally Tony Stark’s story and that it’s going to weave into Thor’s story and Steve Rogers’ story and that it already is in Nick Fury’s and SHIELD. This is about Tony Stark glibly declaring “I am Iron Man” and what that means for him and those around him.

Any character franchise that launches must stand on its own two feet. They have to do the same thing with Thor and Captain America so that when the Avengers movie comes, it’s not just a team movie but has characters that you already care about, understand and empathize with.

If a sequel to The Incredible Hulk is ever made, Feige says it will be after the Avengers. I hope by then Marvel is able to increase their feature film financing capacity to be able to produce four big-budget blockbusters a year. Until that happens, I think Hulk is lower priority than other characters who are more worthy of sequels or origins movies.

On that note, later in the roundtable, Feige explained that after the writers strike, Marvel is back on schedule for two films a year (having none this year and only one next year in Iron Man 2). Feige re-iterated that the less the films cost, the more profit they make and the more films they can make.

As for Ed Norton playing Bruce Banner in Avengers, there’s a “chance” according to Feige, but he didn’t sound very positive. For continuity reasons and to really strengthen Marvel’s impact with this film, I personally find it important the Norton have a role in the movie. The Hulk along with Captain America, Iron Man and Thor are key to me and I think those four should comprise the core of the film and its title roster.

In planning Iron Man 2, Feige explained that they were interested in the villains that would enhance Tony’s character. Justin Hammer is who Stark was before he was ambushed in Afghanistan, the other side of his personality is the inventor/grease monkey side and that is represented by Whiplash. Feige says that it’s fun taking a character no one thinks much of and making him cool (Whiplash).

Feige reveals that at the start of the film, Stark is quite pleased with himself, but over the course of the film the stresses of being Iron Man will be demonstrated and become a crucial part of the story.

What other characters could we see in the future? Well, Kevin’s favorites are Dr Strange, Ant-Man, Black Panther and Iron Fist. All of which, without coincidence, have long been speculated as future Marvel movies in development. He also says that he’d like to break into the cosmic part of the Marvel Universe more (Thor will touch on this).

What kind of Thor can we expect? The Kirby/Stan Lee/Simonson Thor. In the Thor film, it’s based in the scientific, not fantasy – it’s simply science we just don’t yet understand or know about.

Head to the following page for more info and updates on the characters we’re likely to see in the Avengers.

A number of sites had the opportunity to visit the Iron Man 2 set a few weeks back (no, we didn’t, but we’ve worked all that out with Paramount who are great to deal with) and today they unleashed the details online. Following the Iron Man 2 presentation at Comic-Con, we thought it would be a good time to bring folks up to speed on the latest and greatest with the film.

Unfortunately I missed the Avatar panel at Comic-Con, where they debuted 20 minutes of 3D footage from the film, but based on the audience reaction to Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr (Scarlett Johansson and Don Cheadle were also present), I’d say the Iron Man 2 panel may have been the big hit of the event (Kick-Ass had a heck of a reception as well, though).

The following is based on reports from MTV, JoBlo and Latino Review.

First, you might be interested in meeting Tony Stark’s father, Howard Stark. For a while rumors circulated that Tim Robbins might play the character, but in the end they went with someone who looks more like Gerard Sanders, who appeared in still images in the first film as Tony’s father. Why they didn’t go with that actor I don’t know, but in any case the gentleman below on the right is John Slattery and visually he fits the bill. Check out the previous Howard Stark and the new one below:

The previous Howard Stark on the left and the new one on the right

And of course we have Scarlett Johansson as The Black Widow:

Mickey Rourke as Whiplash:

Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer:

Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes:

And of course Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man:

And here’s a brand new image from Iron Man 2 showing Tony Stark looking over a scale model of Stark Expo:

On to highlights from the set visit (which you may consider a bit spoilerish as they do reveal some overall plot elements)…

At what I believe is one of the most anticipated panels at Comic-Con, we had Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johannson on stage for the first sneak peek at Iron Man 2.

The crowed went nuts when Favreau came in. He said it started here, no one cared about Iron Man before they got here. He went right into a promotional reel that showed some behind the scenes shots. Robert Downey Jr. walked in and the crowd came to its feet.

He was ragging on Favreau on Feige for not showing some GOOD footage – and they all played it up.

It’s Favreau’s son’s 8th birthday and RDJ led the crowd in a rendition of Happy Birthday.

Cut to footage…

[Eyes wide open, jaw hanging down, cheering]

After footage… Oh… My.

They’re going to hit it out of the park again, folks. The Iron Man 2 footage included Tony Stark being questioned by a Senate committee. He was total snark – they wanted the armor but he said he’s one with the armor so they would have to take him as well and that would “be the equivalent of indentured servitude or prostitiution, depending on what state you’re in.” He also said they should be thanking him because he “privatized world peace.”

There was a flurry of different footage including:

Mickey Rourke building the Whiplash suit and power core.

Stark on the top of that donut shop in with the giant donut we’ve seen in the previous image – he meets with Sam Jackson as Fury in that same scene.

Rourke as Whiplash in that initial scene at the raceway with his electrified whips (with a really cool lightning effect).

Iron Man dodging incoming fire at night in an apparent attempt at flying towards either the Capital building or the White House (happened too fast, not sure which).

Scarlett as Black Widow kicking some bad guy butt in a hallway.

Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer working out a weapons deal with Jim Rhodes.

Introduction of Cheadle as Rhodey – I’m sorry but he instantly brought a sense of gravitas to the role with his very first word that I didn’t see at all with Howard.

Oh, and a final shot of Rhodey in the War Machine armor tearing it up, standing on the ground, firing weapons out the wazoo in a circular pattern.

Scarlett had dyed her hair red when she showed up to meet Favreau for the part. She worked super hard to be able to do as much of her own stunts/fighting as possible.

Mickey Rourke plays an Ivan Venko/Whiplash amalgam (two villains from the comics). Favreau said that the Whiplash outfit is Ivan’s first attempt at the technology (Crimson Dynamo by the end of the film?). He mentioned

Favreau said that this film shows how Tony is handling the dual role of being himself and Iron Man and the stresses associated with that (when asked about the Demon in a Bottle storyline).

A question was asked about showing some love to highly regarded Iron Man artist Bob Layton, and Favreau called him up to the stage as he was sitting in the front row. Layton said he was invited to the set a couple of weeks ago and was treated like royalty, and thinks this film will blow the first one away.

Straight from the floor of the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con Screen Rant gives you your first look at the new, redesigned armor from Iron Man 2. Above is a shot of the “Hall of Armors” display at the Marvel kiosk highlighting the Mark I, II and III armors – plus a fourth one. These were life sized and people were able to get within a few feet of them.

While the Mark III armor in the image above is battle damaged, being a hard core Iron Man fan I saw the differences between that armor and the new one on the far right immediately. Check out the image below for a comparison between the two (sorry about the fuzziness of the current armor on the left):

Click on the above image for a hi-res version

Changes include a more downward-angled abdominal area, more angular bicep pieces, redesigned thigh armor (including increased gold area), redesigned gauntlets, fuller epaulets (shoulder area) and slimmer boots. The changes are subtle but they definitely make the new suit look a bit sleeker and more advanced.

Check out a close up look at the new (Mark IV?) armor:

One of the biggest films that will be highlighted at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con International is undoubtedly Iron Man 2, the sequel to to last year’s awesome big-screen adaptation of the Marvel comic book, which was directed by Jon Favreau and starred Robert Downey Jr.

Iron Man’s flight to $uccess undeniably began at the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con, where Favreau and Marvel unveiled footage from the film which blew the hats off pretty much everyone present. In preparation for the 2009 Comic-Con, Screen Rant takes a look at where Iron Man 2 is at, and what fans can expect to see at the convention.

.

IT’S A WRAP!

Yesterday we reported that Iron Man 2 has wrapped its principal shoot. Both Marvel Studios top-honcho Kevin Feige and IM2 director Jon Favreau have let the Internet know that the film is in the can, it was a fun shoot, all the actors did well with their roles, and the semi-finished product is looking good so far.

That’s all good news to hear as Favreau and Co. move into the post-production phase where they’ll incorporate all those slick f/x required to bring Ol’ Shellhead and his superhero friends/enemies to cinematic life. However, with Comic-Con happening this week and Iron Man 2 having just wrapped its principal shoot, how much can we expect to actually see at the convention?

.

THE FANS’ DIRECTOR

To answer my own question: I expect to see something pretty cool. Jon Favreau has been one of THE BEST directors about opening up his filmmaking process to the legions of fans who scower the ‘Net every day trying to uncover the latest bit of Iron Man 2 news. Favreau clearly understands why these eager fans are important to the ssuccess of his film (especially a sequel of this magnitude), and has gone to great (read: online-based) lengths to keep fans engaged with the film. If you haven’t been keeping up, just check out Jon Favreau’s twitter page for details.

I say all that to say: Favreau isn’t one for disappointing his fans. Iron Man 2 is going to be a HUGE panel at Comic-Con – expect much of the cast (which includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Jon Favreau, Clark Gregg, John Slattery, Leslie Bibb, Mickey Rourke, and Samuel L. Jackson) to be on hand for the event. And though it’s unknown just how much (if any) of the film has been incorporated with finished f/x, Favreau will undoubtedly have some kind of impressive and/or crowd-pleasing sequence to debut (maybe a quick montage of footage).

.

CAT FIGHT AT THE ‘CON?

If there is anything I learned from covering the 2009 New York Comic-Con earlier this year, it’s that some of the so called “journalists” who attend these conventions have no reservations about asking questions with the full-on intention of starting some Sugar Honey Ice Tea.

With much of the Iron Man 2 cast expected to appear in San Diego, I have no doubt that SOMEBODY in the crowd is going to bring up the rumored beef between cast members Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson, who play Tony Stark’s former assistant Pepper Potts and new assistant/super-spy Black Widow, respectively.

Even as recently as this week, some sites have been reporting that “unnamed sources close to the film” have been whispering that Paltrow is jealous of all the media attention that Johansson has been receiving. Scarlett has in fact been a focal point for both fans and reporters – it was pretty big news when photos of the actress in her Black Widow costume first hit the ‘net, and she was also included on the cover of a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly alongside co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Mickey Rourke (who plays the villain Whiplash). Did I also mention that in order to build hype for Scarlett’s character, Marvel is even releasing a new Black Widow comic book miniseries?

.

Now where have I seen that pic before...

...Oh yeah: when EW did it the first time.

.

Of course there’s no doubt that Gwyneth Paltrow was an important part of what made the first Iron Man so enjoyable – the chemistry between her character and Downey’s Tony Stark was pitch-perfect and really put the shine back onto Mrs. Paltrow’s star. So her feeling marginalized right now is somewhat understandable – however, I’m wondering: if both Paltrow AND Johansson are on the IM2 panel (rumors saying Paltrow might duck out of the event) will we see any sparks fly? Or will the two actresses “play” nice?

They’re both professionals, and will likely carry themselves that way no matter what, but if there is even a slight crack in their carefully-crafted demeanours, expect the cat-fight rumors to continue to spread like wildfire.

The Iron Man 2 panel takes place on Saturday July 25th from 4 pm – 5 pm in Hall H of the San Diego Convention center. The film is slated to hit theaters on May 7, 2010.

This was our first look at one of the new characters and faces added to the Iron Man franchise and Marvel Movie Universe. Today, we can add two more with our first looks at the new James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes played by Don Cheadle as well as Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer.

The images come from /Film and I edited the actual stills for you. They don’t show too much but both seem to take place in a courtroom scene, likely over the issue of the government’s ownership of the Iron Man technology. Take a look and see what you think:

Col. James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes & Justin Hammer (in background)

What fans really want to see is Rhodey in that other costume he wears. You know, the silver and black one littered in guns. I have a feeling we’ll get to see what the live-action War Machine armor looks like very soon.

I look forward to seeing Cheadle’s performance as Rhodes and although I don’t like actor changes during franchises, I think he’s much better for the role than Terrence Howard.

Expect some big updates and revelations very soon as the entire cast of Iron Man 2 will be on a panel next Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con and we’ll be there to give you all the coverage.

Similar to how we first got to see Scarlett in costume, it started with some low quality images that popped up online and were quickly followed by some higher resolution official images. Expect the same for these characters and more from next week!

Iron Man 2 is directed by Jon Favreau and kicks off the start of next summer, opening May 7, 2010.
