Even as the massive critical and financial success of The Avengers has us looking back at the history of Marvel’s shared movie universe, the studio has its gaze fixed firmly on the future – beginning with Iron Man 3.

Principal photography on the Iron Man threequel has reportedly gotten underway at the sound stages in Wilmington, North Carolina. As many reading this article are already well-aware: seasoned action filmmaker Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is calling the shots.

This announcement comes courtesy of Latino Review, which is also the same site responsible for breaking the news about the storyline for Iron Man 3 being heavily influenced by Warren Ellis’ “Extremis” comic book mini-series.
The Avengers is officially a record-shattering box office success - a film revered by millions of fans that even managed to impress a lot of those ‘snobby critics’ out there. Here at Screen Rant we gave the film a 4.5 out of 5 star review, and filled over an hour and a half of our Avengers Podcast Special with glowing praise for writer/director Joss Whedon’s blockbuster Marvel superhero team-up. No doubt about it: Avengers is a monumental success on many levels.

However, it’s important to remember the road that led to The Avengers as Marvel Studios enters the next phase of its shared movie universe, in the build up to The Avengers 2.
Here's our box office report for the weekend of May 4th – featuring the record-breaking new release of 'The Avengers' as well as returning films like 'The Hunger Games' and 'Think Like A Man'.

The Avengers came. The Avengers saw. The Avengers conquered.

Joss Whedon’s big screen comic book mash-up broke records at the box office over the weekend and managed to score the biggest opening weekend EVER! That’s right – bigger than Harry Potter ($169 million) and bigger than The Dark Knight ($158 million). The Marvel movie should gross a mammoth $200 million by Monday morning! A fantastic number given the films $220 million production budget.

The film grossed $80.5 million on Friday, (second only to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’s $91.1 million) kicking-off the summer season in spectacular fashion. The biggest Marvel hero opening was Spider-Man 3’s $151 million launch (it topped out at $336 million, a series domestic low) – but as he’s not part of The Avengers ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: May 6th 2012

With The Avengers nearly out the door, theatrically-speaking, the next major motion picture on Marvel’s slate is Iron Man 3, starring Robert Downey Jr. and co-written and directed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).

Recently, RDJ discussed the possibility of another actor replacing him as Tony Stark down the line. He also addressed the casting rumors regarding Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, and Andy Lau.

There’s only one surefire way to be prepared for Marvel’s The Avengers come May 4th – and that’s by reading as many top-notch Avengers comic books as is physically possible in less than two weeks’ time.

But where, pray tell, does one start? After all, The Avengers (created by Stan Lee and Jack “The King of Comics” Kirby) is one of the oldest Marvel team books in existence, having been published for nearly half a century. Furthermore, the book has gone through several title changes, hundreds of different creative teams, and even more fictional members. It has been, on occasion, both brilliant and horrifically bad. So where does an interested reader begin his/her journey with five decades’ worth of comics to sift through?

Lucky for you, dear readers, we’re here to narrow down just some ...

Click to continue reading 5 Avengers Comic Book Stories to Read Before Seeing ‘The Avengers’ Movie

It will be interesting to see how exactly the Marvel movie universe changes in the aftermath of The Avengers. The next film in line following Joss Whedon’s superhero extravaganza, Iron Man 3 already looks to set a precedent by tackling a famous comic book storyline that not only breaks away from the narrative format of previous Marvel Studio efforts – but would also force the Tony Stark character (Robert Downey Jr.) to literally evolve.

Marvel President Kevin Feige is already hyping the idea that the third Iron Man movie will shake things up, more than fans might expect (take that boast with a grain of salt). Similarly, when asked about the possibility of a SHIELD movie centered around his onscreen counterpart, Nick Fury, Samuel L. Jackson described a film that ...

Click to continue reading Kevin Feige Teases ‘Different’ ‘Iron Man 3′; Jackson Talks ‘SHIELD’ Movie

Next month not only marks the beginning of an action-packed summer of superhero movies, led by Marvel’s The Avengers, but it also hosts the beginning of production on Iron Man 3.

With principal photography creeping up soon, new casting additions have to be completed even sooner and so two weeks ago came a casting call sheet revealing important information about returning characters joining Robert Downey Jr. We know Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson are all back from Iron Man 2, and they may just be joined by newcomer Ben Kingsley for the threequel.

Recent rumors narrowed down a potential plot for Iron Man 3 drawing from the ‘Extremis’ storyline in Warren Ellis’ comic book arc, hinting at a key villainous character finally having a proper introduction. With Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) taking over directorial duties for the third installment, and co-writing the screenplay with Drew Pierce, we now at least have details confirming other key characters returning.

The character information revealed on the Iron Man 3 casting call listed below can be considered minor spoilers for the film and The Avengers.

The first Iron Man paved the way for what became the shared Marvel cinematic universe, with the defining crucial moment coming at the end of the credits when Samuel L. Jackson made a cameo appearance as Nick Fury, name-dropping The Avengers initiative. In Iron Man 2, Fury was given a more ...

Click to continue reading ‘Iron Man 3′ Casting Call Confirms Returning Characters

'Iron Man 3' is rumored to feature a storyline which involves nanotechnology, like that featured in Warren Ellis' 'Extremis' comic book mini-series. Could The Mandarin serve as the film's villain?

Even as the public’s eye remains firmly fixed on The Avengers, Marvel is preparing to begin production on Iron Man 3 this summer. Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is co-scripting and directing the latter project, which is supposedly being fashioned as a (primarily) standalone feature – more in the vein of a gritty, globe-trotting Tom Clancy thriller than its predecessors.

Latino Review is claiming to have an inside scoop on the storyline for the third Iron Man flick, which the site says could be borrowing elements from Warren Ellis’ famous “Extremis” comic book mini-series. More so, that could also set the stage for the appearance of iconic IM baddie Mandarin in the movie threequel (more on that later).

For movie and comic book fans it was The Avengers who really won last weekend’s Super Bowl, with Disney and Marvel Studios displaying dominance on the movie front with the best TV spot of the big game. That short teaser came alongside the online release of the extended Super Bowl trailer for The Avengers, giving fans the best look yet at Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, members of SHIELD and of course, some of the villains for one of this year’s biggest movies.

As epic as it was, this latest footage from The Avengers didn’t quite cut it as a new full-length movie trailer, running only a minute in length, so as fans simply wanting more, we’ve created a brand new trailer for you to correct that problem.

Marvel Studios now has five movies under its belt, with a sixth coming next summer in The Avengers, two confirmed for 2013 and another pair of unannounced films scheduled for 2014. All of these movies exist in a shared universe, taking part in an ongoing continuity with an overarching storyline running congruently in the background.

While seeing movies follow the comic books in this respect makes The Avengers possible, this strategy does also have its downside as we saw most evidently in Iron Man 2. Each movie by Marvel Studios must follow certain guidelines and must include certain characters portrayed in a very specific way, thus restricting the creative freedom of the filmmakers and talent involved.

While the Iron Man films gave rebirth to the career and stardom of Robert Downey Jr. thanks to the oddly perfect casting of him as Tony Stark, they carried supporting casts of big-name talent, one of whom many don’t even realize is in the film.

Paul Bettany (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) played a part in Iron Man and Iron Man 2 as the voice of Jarvis, Tony Stark’s Artificially Intelligent computer who helped in the creation of Stark’s Iron Man armored suits. According to Bettany, he’ll again provide the voice of Jarvis in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers next year.

Check out the brand-new posters for Marvel's 'The Avengers', which, as was previously reported, will be scored by Alan Silvestri (Captain America: The First Avenger).

Marvel superhero comic book movie fans will have to wait until February 2012 to get their next fix, in the form of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. However, the next big Marvel cinematic events is (of course) writer/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, which should be getting a full-length trailer sometime sooner, rather than later.

However, in the meantime, we have a pair of new Avengers characters banners for you to check out – along with some official confirmation from Marvel that (as was previously reported) composer Alan Silvestri is indeed scoring Whedon’s superhero extravaganza.

On the off-chance you’re new to this whole Avengers thing, here is the official plot synopsis:

When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink ...

Click to continue reading New ‘Avengers’ Banners; Marvel Confirms Alan Silvestri as Composer

While promoting 'Immortals,' Mickey Rourke continues to openly disparage Marvel and 'Iron Man 2' for not utilizing the complexities he brought to the role of Ivan Vanko.

Iron Man 2 (while performing admirably at the box office) is widely considered to be the lesser of the two Iron Man films – in part because the most memorable thing about the villain was his fondness for birds.

The man who played that bird-loving bad guy, Mickey Rourke – who recently spoke to our very own Roth Cornet about his distaste for Iron Man 2 – went into further detail while promoting the forthcoming Greek mythology epic, Immortals.

On his attempt at complexity with Ivan Vanko – courtesy of Crave Online – Rourke said:

Several high-defintion versions of still frames from Marvel's 'The Avengers' have been released online, showing Black Widow and Nick Fury (among others) in action.

While we’re still waiting for Marvel to unveil an official teaser trailer for The Avengers – and not just a “button,” like the clip that showed at the conclusion of Captain America‘s end credits - the comic book/movie studio has been busy releasing lots of images, character profiles, and more to help heighten anticipation for the (hopefully) game-changing superhero ensemble adventure.

Now we have more still frames from the film, which offer an early look at several big-name characters in action – including S.H.I.E.L.D. head Nick Fury and the catsuit-clad Natalie Rushman/Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.

It’s expected that a full-blown teaser for The Avengers will be released in the near future, providing a better look at the super-powered protagonists of the film as well as the villains, which include the devious Loki and an army of malevolent extraterrestrial invaders.

Here is a description of the Avengers movie ...

Click to continue reading New ‘Avengers’ Images: Explosions, Gunfire, & Costumed Heroes

Iron Man will join the ranks of the superhero team The Avengers next summer, but the Old Shellhead isn’t giving up his role as a solo star just yet. According to new reports, just a month after The Avengers hits theaters, filming is set to begin on Iron Man 3.

The movie, which will be helmed by Shane Black, is reportedly scheduled to begin filming in June of next year in Wilmington, North Carolina. North Carolina beat out Michigan to attract the multimillion dollar production to several sound stages at Wilmington’s Screen Gems Studios.

Latino Review originally shared the scoop on the filming location, with the Detroit Free Press confirming the news in its own report. ...

Click to continue reading ‘Iron Man 3′ to Start Filming in North Carolina in June 2012
