Check out a gallery of pictures featuring a highly-detailed statue collectible of Iron Man's Mark VII armor from 'The Avengers'!

One fringe benefit to having Iron Man featured in a Marvel movie (aside from the obvious advantage of having Robert Downey Jr.’s all-encompassing charisma) is that we get to see yet another new Iron Man armor design on the big screen!

Each new upgrade – from the suitcase-compact Mark V to the triangle chest piece Mark VI – has been better than the last, so fans are going to have high expectations for the Iron Man armor(s?) that will be featured in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.

Today we have a our first fully-detailed look at the new Mark VII armor that was already presumably featured in The Avengers trailer, courtesy of Marvel and Kotobukiya toy company of Japan, which has designed a gorgeous new statuette of Iron Man wearing the Mark VII.
First, Jon Favreau took himself out of Iron Man 3. Then, Kenneth Branagh and Patty Jenkins both passed on 'Thor 2.' Why is Marvel Studios having a tough time filling director chairs?

Marvel Studios now has five movies under its belt, with a sixth coming next summer in The Avengers, two confirmed for 2013 and another pair of unannounced films scheduled for 2014. All of these movies exist in a shared universe, taking part in an ongoing continuity with an overarching storyline running congruently in the background.

While seeing movies follow the comic books in this respect makes The Avengers possible, this strategy does also have its downside as we saw most evidently in Iron Man 2. Each movie by Marvel Studios must follow certain guidelines and must include certain characters portrayed in a very specific way, thus restricting the creative freedom of the filmmakers and talent involved.

Combine this lack of creative freedom with Marvel’s ...

Click to continue reading Creative Differences Are Knocking Directors Out of Marvel Movies

While the Iron Man films gave rebirth to the career and stardom of Robert Downey Jr. thanks to the oddly perfect casting of him as Tony Stark, they carried supporting casts of big-name talent, one of whom many don’t even realize is in the film.

Paul Bettany (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) played a part in Iron Man and Iron Man 2 as the voice of Jarvis, Tony Stark’s Artificially Intelligent computer who helped in the creation of Stark’s Iron Man armored suits. According to Bettany, he’ll again provide the voice of Jarvis in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers next year.

J.A.R.V.I.S., which stands for Just A Rather Very Intelligent System, can be considered one of Tony Stark’s special abilities since he’s one of Marvel’s biggest superheroes who actually doesn’t possess ...

Click to continue reading Paul Bettany’s Voice In For ‘The Avengers’

Iron Man 2 (while performing admirably at the box office) is widely considered to be the lesser of the two Iron Man films – in part because the most memorable thing about the villain was his fondness for birds.

The man who played that bird-loving bad guy, Mickey Rourke – who recently spoke to our very own Roth Cornet about his distaste for Iron Man 2 – went into further detail while promoting the forthcoming Greek mythology epic, Immortals.

On his attempt at complexity with Ivan Vanko – courtesy of Crave Online – Rourke said:

Mickey Rourke gives us a candid take on his participation in films such as 'Iron Man 2,' and 'Sin City 2,' as well as an overview of what it is to fall and rise again in Hollywood.

Mickey Rourke is not an actor who is known for his circumspect actions or speech. He has been enjoying Hollywood’s warm embrace over the past several years, however. So it was somewhat surprising (and wholly refreshing) to hear Rourke speak with an intriguing combination of humility and candor about his recent and past experiences as an actor at this weekends press event for director Tarsem Singh’s latest visual extravaganza, Immortals. Rourke provided some insight into his reservations about his potential participation in Sin City 2, as well as his frustrations while working on Iron Man 2.

The dialogue opened with congratulations to Rourke on his upcoming inclusion in the Hollywood walk of fame. The actor gave an immediate sense of how the discussion would evolve when he said that it probably meant more to us than ...

Click to continue reading Mickey Rourke Talks ‘Sin City 2′, ‘Iron Man 2′ & Hollywood

Marvel Studios is now ramping up to their big superhero movie crossover event The Avengers - an ambitious saga that has been in the making ever since Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk were released in 2008.

The last two years have brought us much deeper into The Avengers universe with the releases of Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger – however, despite some clear links between the respective films, there have been some gaps in the telling of how Marvel’s mightiest heroes ultimately come together.

We’ve known for some time that Marvel is planning live-action short films, which would presumably be used to test the appeal of their more obscure superhero properties (Black Panther, <a ...

Click to continue reading Marvel Short Film ‘The Consultant’ Fills Gaps in ‘Avengers’ Saga

In Marvel and DC comics, each character is part of larger universe. Batman fights alongside Superman and Wonder Woman in DC’s Justice League; some of the X-Men fight alongside Spider-Man and The Avengers in Marvel’s main universe. When it comes to the films however, only Marvel Studios had made the effort to realize that shared universe on the silver screen and after years of laying the foundation, the next feature from the Disney-owned studio represents the culmination of their efforts, and the ultimate comic geek fantasy: The Avengers.

Thor is finally about to debut to North America in just a few days and it’s not long after when Captain America: The First Avenger follows suit. These two films provide lead-ins to the ultimate comic book movie event, The Avengers, which has already begun production.

It started with a mysterious, yet questionable email I received two months ago which explained that Marvel Studios was prepping to announce an S.H.I.E.L.D. event in New York City for spring 2011. The event would bring film stars Samuel L. Jackson (Director Nick Fury), Clark Gregg (Agent Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Agent Maria Hill) and at least four other agents and have them “recruit” new SHIELD members.

This would supposedly occur during filming of The Avengers in April or May and would also continue through San Diego Comic-Con in July. We didn’t jump on it at the time, but things got interesting a while later when our own Roth Cornet attended WonderCon two weekends ago only to experience the beginning of Marvel’s SHIELD viral.

This weekend movie fans will bear witness to the 83rd Academy Awards, and like in years past, the 2011 Oscar race is shaping up to be more a confirmation of what everybody already suspects, rather than a thrilling race between neck-and-neck films, actors, and directors who are all hoping to walk away basking in Oscar’s glory.

With films like Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, True Grit, The Social Network, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, and even Iron Man 2 up for nominations in different categories, the 2011 Oscars ceremony will offer something for arthouse, mainstream, and fanboy cinephiles alike.

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films like ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

Hollywood studios always hope to attain one of the many tiny gold naked man statues handed out on Oscar night and even films that that are foremost exercises in style over substance stand a chance of doing just that. The 2011 Oscar nominations won’t be announced until January 25th, but the Academy has narrowed down its list of potential candidates to win the prize for eye-dazzling visual F/X.

Seven movies – Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Hereafter, Inception, Iron Man 2, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and TRON: Legacy - are still in the running to snag a nod for their effects work. Regardless of which ones are eventually nominated and/or win, it begs the question – which film released in 2010 actually boasted the best practical and digital effects?

For 37 years, the People’s Choice Awards has been celebrating the fan favorites in film, television and music. In preparation for tonight’s awards ceremony, over 35 million votes were cast by the American public in hopes that their favorite film, television series, actor or musician will take home this coveted award.

For the second year in a row, the multifaceted Queen Latifah will be serving as host of this fanatical gala. With over 43 separate categories having to fit within the given timeslot, something tells me that Queen Latifah is going to be forced to move things along at a swift pace in order to fit each category within the 2-hour time-limit.

Another year of movies has come and gone – and everyone is producing lists of their best and worst movies of the year. We have already unveiled what we thought were the 10 worst movies of 2010 and the top 10 movie moments of 2010 but we thought we would also do a list highlighting which movies we found to be the most disappointing.

While 2010 brought us its fair share of thrills, excitement, drama and laughs in such films as Inception, Kick-Ass, Black Swan and Toy Story 3 (to name but a few) the year inevitably brought us its fair share of disappointment, too.

There are plenty of threats to the entertainment industry every year, but movie piracy consistently comes up as the biggest. Authorities continue to seek avenues to shut down the illegal downloading of movies, but apparently it is not enough. In 2010, nearly 100 million downloads were recorded – and those were just the top ten most pirated movies of the year.

The misconception with pirated movies is that those who watch on their computer are not actually going to the theater. For the most part, we can assume this is true. But when a film like Avatar comes in at the top spot with 16.5 million illegal downloads, one must wonder how many of those people also contributed to the movie’s record-breaking $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

Yesterday afternoon, the surprise news broke that Jon Favreau would not be directing Iron Man 3. Speculation about financial and creative reasons causing the departure aside, it was a shock to fans and possibly a blow to Marvel Studios, who owe their accelerated success thanks to his work on Iron Man and establishing the Marvel cinematic universe.

As we know already, Favreau will still be working with Marvel parent company, Disney Studios, on Magic Kingdom and he’s still in a producer role on The Avengers. But what fans really want to know is why he’s not sticking around to close the Iron Man trilogy. Fortunately, Favs was quick to explain himself, continuing his tradition of openness to the fans and public.

Favreau revealed his reasons to <a ...

Click to continue reading Jon Favreau Talks ‘Iron Man 3′ Decision & ‘Magic Kingdom’

Jon Favreau informs Marvel Studios that he's dropping out of directorial duties on 'Iron Man 3.' Why? And who will replace him?

It what may be the most shocking Marvel Studios related news to date, Jon Favreau, the man responsible for bringing the young studio their first worldwide blockbuster and successful franchise, is stepping down from the directorial duties of the third Iron Man film. That’s right, Iron Man 3 will not be directed by Jon Favreau.

Why? There’s no clear cut answer or official word from Favreau himself just yet, but if you piece together some recent events and take into account Marvel’s tight budgeting, you can formulate some viable working theories.

New York Magazine reports that Favreau has informed Marvel Studios of his decision and that the studio began the search for a replacement director last night. This is not something we learned on Friday from ...

Click to continue reading Jon Favreau Not Directing ‘Iron Man 3′ [Updated]

This week's DVD and Blu-ray releases pair a few cinematic classics with some big name new releases to kick off a great month of home video options.

The next few weeks will comprise one of the best runs in home video release history. Some of the most long-awaited titles finally reach the Blu-ray format, while this year’s summer hits make their way to home video.

The Thin Red Line is this week’s long overdue classic making its way to Blu-ray, but some would argue that the 1933 King Kong is the more intriguing Blu-ray transfer.

The superhero genre has another recent hit to add to home collections with Iron Man 2, but Superman and Batman have teamed up to battle Tony Stark in a home video matchup. A straight comedy and a hardcore dramatic thriller follow the big names in a well-rounded week of releases.

The following can now be found on DVD and Blu-ray.

With Marvel Studios moving full steam ahead with two big budget 3D blockbusters debuting next summer in Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, followed by The Avengers in 2012, there is one organization that will tie together all of these heroes and their journeys: S.H.I.E.L.D.

We were introduced to the film version of the top secret organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) back in 2008 by two characters in Iron Man, the first self-financed Marvel Studios movie. Those key characters were of course Samuel J. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson, the two agents acting as the constants between each Marvel Studios project.
