Iron Man’s Mark VII Armor From ‘The Avengers’

One fringe benefit to having Iron Man featured in a Marvel movie (aside from the obvious advantage of having Robert Downey Jr.’s all-encompassing charisma) is that we get to see yet another new Iron Man armor design on the big screen!

Each new upgrade – from the suitcase-compact Mark V to the triangle chest piece Mark VI – has been better than the last, so fans are going to have high expectations for the Iron Man armor(s?) that will be featured in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.

Today we have a our first fully-detailed look at the new Mark VII armor that was already presumably featured in The Avengers trailer, courtesy of Marvel and Kotobukiya toy company of Japan, which has designed a gorgeous new statuette of Iron Man wearing the Mark VII. Creative Differences Are Knocking Directors Out of Marvel Movies

Marvel Studios now has five movies under its belt, with a sixth coming next summer in The Avengers, two confirmed for 2013 and another pair of unannounced films scheduled for 2014. All of these movies exist in a shared universe, taking part in an ongoing continuity with an overarching storyline running congruently in the background.

While seeing movies follow the comic books in this respect makes The Avengers possible, this strategy does also have its downside as we saw most evidently in Iron Man 2. Each movie by Marvel Studios must follow certain guidelines and must include certain characters portrayed in a very specific way, thus restricting the creative freedom of the filmmakers and talent involved.

Paul Bettany’s Voice In For ‘The Avengers’

While the Iron Man films gave rebirth to the career and stardom of Robert Downey Jr. thanks to the oddly perfect casting of him as Tony Stark, they carried supporting casts of big-name talent, one of whom many don’t even realize is in the film.

Paul Bettany (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) played a part in Iron Man and Iron Man 2 as the voice of Jarvis, Tony Stark’s Artificially Intelligent computer who helped in the creation of Stark’s Iron Man armored suits. According to Bettany, he’ll again provide the voice of Jarvis in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers next year.

Mickey Rourke Really Doesn’t Like ‘Iron Man 2′; Calls Marvel Movies ‘Mindless’

Iron Man 2 (while performing admirably at the box office) is widely considered to be the lesser of the two Iron Man films – in part because the most memorable thing about the villain was his fondness for birds.

The man who played that bird-loving bad guy, Mickey Rourke – who recently spoke to our very own Roth Cornet about his distaste for Iron Man 2 – went into further detail while promoting the forthcoming Greek mythology epic, Immortals.

Thor is finally about to debut to North America in just a few days and it’s not long after when Captain America: The First Avenger follows suit. These two films provide lead-ins to the ultimate comic book movie event, The Avengers, which has already begun production.

We’ve known about these films and their casts for quite some time, but what happens next? Outside of an official release date for Iron Man 3 and the hope that Ant-Man will someday come to fruition, we don’t yet know the official film slate for Marvel Studios going forward.

Marvel Studios Viral: Join SHIELD Now!

It started with a mysterious, yet questionable email I received two months ago which explained that Marvel Studios was prepping to announce an S.H.I.E.L.D. event in New York City for spring 2011. The event would bring film stars Samuel L. Jackson (Director Nick Fury), Clark Gregg (Agent Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Agent Maria Hill) and at least four other agents and have them “recruit” new SHIELD members.

This would supposedly occur during filming of The Avengers in April or May and would also continue through San Diego Comic-Con in July. We didn’t jump on it at the time, but things got interesting a while later when our own Roth Cornet attended WonderCon two weekends ago only to experience the beginning of Marvel’s SHIELD viral.

Seven movies – Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Hereafter, Inception, Iron Man 2, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and TRON: Legacy - are still in the running to snag a nod for their effects work. ‘Avatar’ Tops List of Most Pirated Movies in 2010

There are plenty of threats to the entertainment industry every year, but movie piracy consistently comes up as the biggest. Authorities continue to seek avenues to shut down the illegal downloading of movies, but apparently it is not enough. In 2010, nearly 100 million downloads were recorded – and those were just the top ten most pirated movies of the year.

The misconception with pirated movies is that those who watch on their computer are not actually going to the theater. For the most part, we can assume this is true. But when a film like Avatar comes in at the top spot with 16.5 million illegal downloads, one must wonder how many of those people also contributed to the movie’s record-breaking $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

Jon Favreau Talks ‘Iron Man 3′ Decision & ‘Magic Kingdom’

Yesterday afternoon, the surprise news broke that Jon Favreau would not be directing Iron Man 3. Speculation about financial and creative reasons causing the departure aside, it was a shock to fans and possibly a blow to Marvel Studios, who owe their accelerated success thanks to his work on Iron Man and establishing the Marvel cinematic universe.

As we know already, Favreau will still be working with Marvel parent company, Disney Studios, on Magic Kingdom and he’s still in a producer role on The Avengers. But what fans really want to know is why he’s not sticking around to close the Iron Man trilogy. Fortunately, Favs was quick to explain himself, continuing his tradition of openness to the fans and public.

Jon Favreau Not Directing ‘Iron Man 3′ [Updated]

It what may be the most shocking Marvel Studios related news to date, Jon Favreau, the man responsible for bringing the young studio their first worldwide blockbuster and successful franchise, is stepping down from the directorial duties of the third Iron Man film. That’s right, Iron Man 3 will not be directed by Jon Favreau.

Why? There’s no clear cut answer or official word from Favreau himself just yet, but if you piece together some recent events and take into account Marvel’s tight budgeting, you can formulate some viable working theories.

The next few weeks will comprise one of the best runs in home video release history. Some of the most long-awaited titles finally reach the Blu-ray format, while this year’s summer hits make their way to home video.

The Thin Red Line is this week’s long overdue classic making its way to Blu-ray, but some would argue that the 1933 King Kong is the more intriguing Blu-ray transfer.

The superhero genre has another recent hit to add to home collections with Iron Man 2, but Superman and Batman have teamed up to battle Tony Stark in a home video matchup. A straight comedy and a hardcore dramatic thriller follow the big names in a well-rounded week of releases.

Clark Gregg Says The Avengers is Just The Beginning

With Marvel Studios moving full steam ahead with two big budget 3D blockbusters debuting next summer in Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, followed by The Avengers in 2012, there is one organization that will tie together all of these heroes and their journeys: S.H.I.E.L.D.

We were introduced to the film version of the top secret organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) back in 2008 by two characters in Iron Man, the first self-financed Marvel Studios movie. Those key characters were of course Samuel J. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson, the two agents acting as the constants between each Marvel Studios project.
