Robert Downey Jr. Talks Up Iron Man 2; Talks Down Dark Knight

The Chicago Sun-Times recently spoke with the Iron Man star and managed to pry some details about the sequel to the hit film out of him; Movie Hole also asked Downey about Iron Man 2 and got more than they bargained for when the actor went on a tirade, slamming DC Comics and the runaway success of The Dark Knight.

Avengers Cast “Confirmed,” Iron Man 2 to Intro New Avenger

Avengers Cast "Confirmed," Iron Man 2 to Intro New Avenger

According to Den of Geek, Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier has been letting all the beans spill from Marvel’s bag of tricks concerning the cast of the Avengers movie, as well as the current state of Iron Man 2. Is the Frenchman giving us fact, or just more fiction? I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Iron Man 2 Script By Tropic Thunder Writer??

Iron Man 2 Script By Tropic Thunder Writer??

Uh oh.

That’s my first reaction to news that Tropic Thunder co-writer Justin Theroux is in final negotiations to write the screenplay for Iron Man 2.

No slam against the guy personally, but why is he in the running to write the script for Iron Man 2? I suppose it could be because both Iron Man and Tropic Thunder are Paramount movies, but this news gives me the willies.

Shocking News: Favreau Will Direct Iron Man 2

Shocking News: Favreau Will Direct Iron Man 2

I’m really getting tired of saying this.

Ok, everyone can breathe easy now, including all those websites that were hyperventilating and saying that Jon Favreau might not return to direct Iron Man 2. According to Deadline Hollywood Daily Favreau has accepted an offer from the studio to helm the Iron Man sequel. It hasn’t been officially announced yet, but as far as I’m concerned this news is golden.

Robert Downey Jr. To Star In Cowboys & Aliens

Robert Downey Jr. To Star In Cowboys & Aliens

It looks like everybody’s favorite Iron Man is keeping his hand in the big budget Action-Adventure arena. Robert Downey Jr. is in negotiations to star in Cowboys and Aliens, a Sci-Fi / Western in which a battle between the Apache and Western settlers is interrupted by an alien spaceship crashing in the Old West.

Talk about high concept!

The film is based on a graphic novel idea by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley. DreamWorks and Universal hope that the Brian Grazer and Ron Howard produced film will be a summer tent-pole film for 2010.

But wait. Isn’t Iron Man 2 set for release that year? Isn’t Downey Jr. signed to play Tony Stark in the second film in the franchise?

What’s going on?

Title Logos For Upcoming Marvel Movies

Title Logos For Upcoming Marvel Movies

Courtesy of MTV come the logos for the next four superhero movies coming from Marvel Studios. On the left you can see the spiffy graphics for Iron Man 2 (or should I say Iron Man II?) and Thor in 2010, Captain America in 2011 and… The Avengers.

This is as high res a version of the poster as is out there at the moment.

Conspicuous by it’s absence is any mention of Hulk 2. I guess they weren’t feeling confident about how it would do at the box office… we’ll have to see what happens over the next couple of weeks. Also interesting is seeing Thor up there for a 2010 release (which is supposed to be a couple of months after the Iron Man sequel). I say interesting because Jon Favreau thinks there’s not enough time to get Shellhead out the door by early Summer 2010. I don’t know if the script is done for Thor, but with Matthew Vaughn having dropped out there’s still no director picked to helm the Norse god epic.

On the other hand, while Justice League has been tossed about like a rowboat in stormy seas, I have no doubt that The Avengers will make it to the big screen. Marvel has planting the seeds for it in both Iron Man AND The Incredible Hulk and I have no doubt we’ll see hints of it in Thor as well.

Yes, Jon Favreau Has Been Offered Iron Man 2

Yes, Jon Favreau Has Been Offered Iron Man 2

We can all rest easy now; Marvel Studios put out an offer to Jon Favreau to direct Iron Man 2, and it’s a higher salary than he received on Iron Man.

There were some strong indications that Favs might have been out on directing Iron Man 2, especially a story run by IESB.net (via Ain’t It Cool News). But Deadline Hollywood Daily has squashed the rumor and we’ll be seeing Iron Man 2 by 2010.

However, Favs himself has expressed concern about the April 30, 2010 release date. Especially since a script hasn’t been written. Spider-Man 2 came out two years and a couple of months after the first one, and it rocked the house. However, The Dark Knight is coming out three years after Batman Begins, and that seems to make a little more sense. Even X2 came out three years after X-Men.

And of course, Vic predicted this a month ago.

Iron Man 2 News

According to Military.com Iron Man 2 starts shooting less than a year from now, in March of 2009. The sequel to the awesome first film (PLEASE be good!) already has a release date set of April 30th, 2010.

ComingSoon.net did an interview with director Jon Favreau which revealed the following:

  • They’re currently working on the extra features for the DVD. They have “hours and hours of stuff” that will eventually be released.
  • Favreau still hasn’t been officially hired to direct the sequel.
  • The plot for the second film is still up in the air.
  • Due to the planned release schedules for Iron Man 2 and The Avengers, if he gets the Iron Man sequel, it’s likely that he won’t be directing Avengers due to them being released only one year apart.

More Details On Upcoming Marvel Superhero Movies

Over at CHUD.com there’s a report that details the upcoming slate of superhero movies coming from Marvel Studios on the heels of the spectacular performance of Iron Man so far.

They had a chance to sit down with Kevin Feige, the head of the fledgling studio and hounded him for answers about upcoming movies.

Included in the interview were details about the upcoming Captain America movie, the Avengers movie (which seems a heck of a lot more likely to happen than the stillborn Justice League film), Thor and Iron Man 2.

Of COURSE Favreau And Co. Will Return For Iron Man 2

Of COURSE Favreau And Co. Will Return For Iron Man 2

It’s being reported on movie sites all over the place that not only is there not a “lock” on director Jon Favreau returning to helm the inevitable Iron Man 2, but that even with contracts in place there’s no guarantee that Robert Downey Jr. other other castmembers will return for the next Iron Man sequel.

To which I say: Give me a break.

Of course they’ll all be returning for the next film.

As of the time I’m writing this Iron Man has grossed close to $400 MILLION worldwide in just THREE weeks. And of that doesn’t include one penny from all the movie tie-ins from deals with Burger King, toys, t-shirts, etc., etc.

Does anyone seriously think that Marvel and/or Paramount is going to mess with the formula that generated those numbers? I think not.
