It is difficult to say this week is exciting on the home video front. However, there are some films worth a look. Between a pair of Oscar-noms and an tragically overlooked film, there is enough reason to at least peruse the shelves at your nearest store.

Next week will be a little better, but at least the summer slate of movies has kicked off to keep you occupied.

NEW RELEASES:

The Messenger – Woody Harrelson was deservedly nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting role in this film. It is difficult to explain how much better The Messenger is than every other movie on today’s Breakdown (even Carlito’s Way). Just know that it is.

Time to roll out the red carpet, put on your best outfit and practice sitting in an auditorium for four hours just to find out that someone else won as tonight is the night that filmmakers and movie goers have been waiting for all year. It’s time for the Oscars!

Whether it’s soldiers disarming bombs in The Hurt Locker, an all out seafood war with Prawns in District 9 or even a couple of $500 million blue cats in Avatar; audiences around the world have been treated to a veritable treasure trove of motion picture excellence. While many believe they already know who’s going to win, don’t be too surprised if you see a couple unexpected winners here and there… especially with Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin taking over as hosts.

2010 Golden Globe Award Winners

I’m sure if you’re at all interested in which movies win what at each of the big award ceremonies, you caught the 67 Annual Golden Globe Awards last night on NBC. It was a fun show (as the Globes usually are compared to the Oscars), with some predictable/expected winners and some pretty major shocks.

Rickey Gervais was an absolute hoot as the host, jabbing in and out with often controversial but almost always funny gags which ranged from a Mel Gibson drinking joke (“I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”) to one about Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler (“It’s Rachel from Friends and that bloke out of 300.”). Great stuff from a great host choice.

With the award season in full swing, we at Screen Rant figured that maybe we should be covering these prestigious events because who knows, Mariah Carey could get up and say something crazy at one of these things OR Mariah Carey could get up and say something crazy at two of these things.

In case of such events, the general consensus is that we need someone around to provide hilarious, informative and cute/endearing commentary as well as someone that you, the reader, can yell at when you don’t agree with something we say.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: December 13, 2009

Disney leap Frogs the competition to get to number one; Andy Daly moves to Jelly Stone Park; a Twilight star sees Hereafter; Polanski might not get a release but his Ghost Writer will; Diaz is a Bad Teacher; Frank Langella is an Unknown White Male and Frankenstein Lives in Death Race 2.

Box Office

Clint Eastwood’s Invictus scored just under $10 million over the weekend from 2,125 locations. Opening much like Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby, the film has had solid reviews from critics. With Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon head-lining, the film might have a chance of hitting the $100 million club if it gets some awards momentum.

His most recent disaster epic 2012 destroyed all competition and banked an impressive $65 million over the weekend to capture the number one position. Just recently a couple of trailers appeared online for two highly-anticipated films starring Matt Damon: Paul Greengrass’ Green Zone and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. They are very different types of movies – Green Zone being like Bourne set during the Iraq War and Invictus looking like one of those biopics that is clearly “Oscar-ish.” Check out both of the trailers below.

Happy Friday everyone! For the last Friday of October before Halloween weekend, we’ve again gathered the latest posters to come out for this week’s poster round-up.

Clint Eastwood’s ‘Invictus’ Snags Awards Season Opening

Coming on the heels of the widely-celebrated Gran Torino, Clint Eastwood is in preparations to release his next feature film Invictus, the story of Nelson Mandela’s efforts to reunite the people of South Africa during the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

The movie will feature Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar, the captain of the South African rugby team. The title, Invictus, refers to a short poem Mandela was often known to recite.

Slated to open on December 11th, Warner Bros. hopes premiering Invictus at the peak of awards season will make the film a heavy-hitter come Oscar time. Of course, Clint Eastwood is no stranger to awards: he has earned two Best Actor nominations, four Best Director nominations (with two wins for Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby), and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.
